This year 2026, Iditarod begins on March 7th. Here is the link to all the post we have covered on this particular topic; pleas browse at your leisure. The record time to complete the race is in excess of 8 days; but it has been known to take up to 15.

Many of the dogs suffer terribly in the harsh, severe Alaskan environment. They are forced to pull the mushers sled in temperatures which can reach (minus) -100 degrees F when the sub zero temperatures and windchill combine.
This is without any doubt, the harshest and toughest race for any dog to withstand. In 2022, approximately 250 dogs were withdrawn during the race as a result of exhaustion, illness and injury = see https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2022/03/22/usa-iditarod-2022-is-now-over-almost-250-dogs-pulled-off-the-event-this-year-because-of-exhaustion-illness-and-injury-take-action/
We at WAV consider that no dogs should be forced to endure these conditions just for the prize of winning a race!

Many of us in welfare have known about, and campaigned against Iditarod for many years. A great deal of good folk may have never even heard of the Alaskan Iditarod Race. So hopefully now, you are aware and will join with us and millions of other folk in fighting to get this stopped.
Unfortunately, Iditarod is sponsored by many big companies – see the graphic below.
Peta, the worldwide animal welfare organisation always cover this race every year on their site. You can read a lot more about it at https://www.bing.com/search?q=Peta+iditarod&cvid=c69aebed4ac7436fbe66253e350f6960&gs_lcrp=EgRlZGdlKgYIABBFGDkyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQRRg80gEJMTc2NDlqMGo0qAIIsAIB&FORM=ANAB01&PC=DCTS
I hope you have found this interesting, and informative. Welcome to Iditarod, where dogs are literally raced to death.
