WAV Comment –  Lucy has successfully had her facial tumour (shown above) removed, and is well on the road to recovery.

PETITION TARGET: Prosecuting Attorney

When police in Willoughby, Ohio responded to a call of a dog running loose, they found a cold, terrified pit bull mix who had been heartlessly abandoned for days in freezing weather. Her so-called “guardians” had left her to fend for herself with just a cage and an old, soiled pillow.

In addition to being lonely and cold, the dog — now named Lucy — needed urgent medical attention for a large tumor on her face. Subsequent surgery to remove the tumor was successful, but she has a long road of recovery ahead of her, and the seriousness of her condition is unknown because the biopsy results haven’t come in yet.

Lake County Dog Warden Rodney Shelton confirmed that based on the condition Lucy was found in, she was a victim of neglect.

Lucy’s owners have been identified as Alvaro Torres and Heather Pica Torres. The couple was arrested for fifth-degree felony cruelty to a companion animal and a misdemeanor charge for an unlicensed animal.

It’s now imperative that both individuals involved in this cruel act of animal abuse are held to the highest degree of accountability possible. Sign this petition urging the prosecuting attorney for this case to treat the crime with the severity it deserves, and to call for a lifetime ban on the defendants ever having another animal again.

Serbia: Victory ! – Fur Farms All Now Banned From 1st January 2019.

Fur Farms Are Now BANNED In Serbia!

Fur Farms Are Now BANNED In Serbia!

Above – Chinchilla -the only animal farmed for fur in Serbia.

The new ban now saves about 12,000 / 13,000 animals each year.

After ten years of lobbying, Serbia’s long-awaited ban on fur farms finally went into effect on January 1st, 2019, and will save the lives of an estimated 12,000 chinchillas every year.

When it passed, the 2009 Animal Welfare Act included a decade-long transitional period, allowing fur farmers time to phase out their business and find a more sustainable income. But the wait is now finally over for these suffering animals.

Anti-fur organizations such as the Fur Free Alliance have been hard at work during that period, as pro-fur advocates fought to get the ban reversed.

In 2018, with the deadline drawing closer, fur trade groups stepped up their efforts, pressuring the Serbian government to extend the transition period or abandon the ban completely.

Thanks to the relentless work of the Fur Free Alliance and Serbian organization Freedom for Animals, the law stayed in place.

“For 15 years now, Freedom for Animals has advocated for a fur-free Serbia by advancing and supporting legislation to abolish this brutal exploitation of animals,” said Snezana Milovanovic, director of Freedom for Animals. “With the enforcement of the 2009 Animal Welfare Act, that makes it illegal to keep, reproduce, import, export and kill animals only for the production of fur, a great victory is finally achieved. Not only is this ban important for animals kept for fur production in Serbia, but also for the whole South East European region, and it signifies a major step forward for animal rights worldwide.”

The only species farmed for their fur in Serbia, chinchillas are endangered and protected in their natural habitats within South America. These adorable rodents are highly social, often living in colonies of up to 100 individuals. They are monogamous, mobile, shy and nocturnal.

These natural behaviors lie in stark contrast to their tortured lives in fur farms. Crammed into tiny cages barely big enough to move around in, they are forced to be active in the daytime.

Research has shown that chinchillas are prone to serious health and behavioral issues when kept in these horrific conditions. From stereotypic behaviors to self-mutilation, the intense stress of their enforced imprisonment is clear.

Serbia’s ban now puts them on a par with around a dozen other countries that have put an end to fur farming, including Norway, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

Canada: Stop Cruelty to Dogs at the Deadly Yukon Sled Race – Canadian Petition.

PETITION TARGET: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

A sled dog named Boppy tragically died choking on his own vomit during the the grueling Yukon Quest race last year. A necropsy revealed that the battered dog suffered stomach ulcers, whipworm infestation, muscle wasting and more.

While Boppy’s “guardian” — a 2-time Yukon champion — is barred from racing in 2019, the torturous event will still go on, with the help of funding from the Canadian government. It’s time to stop the cruelty.

Boppy is just one of nine dogs who have died in the past decade at the grueling Yukon, a 1,000-mile race from Fairbanks, Alaska to the Yukon in Northern Canada. Some died from medical problems like sudden intestinal issues and internal bleeding. Others died choking on food, vomit, and pieces of their harness.

As with other sled dogs, the cruelty probably began long before the race even started.

Last October, disturbing photos surfaced online of the appalling conditions at a kennel owned by Dallas Seavey, a regular participant in the annual Iditarod race in Alaska. The startling images showed starving puppies, shivering in the freezing cold and with infected neck wounds.

Similar conditions were exposed in the 2016 documentary Sled Dogs, during which camera crews visited kennels where sled dogs were tethered to plastic barrels and surrounded by filth.

Sled dogs deemed too old or unfit to perform are often ‘culled,’ or killed. In 2011, a mass grave of 50 dogs was discovered on the property of a former sled dog musher in British Columbia.

This year’s Yukon Quest race is set to begin on February 2. Sign this petition urging Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to pave the way for the rights of sled dogs by ending government funding for this cruel and inhumane event.

Lion Shot 8 Times After Gruesome Mauling – Sign to Stop the Bloodshed

PETITION TARGET: Governors of North Carolina, Alabama, Nevada, Wisconsin.

Tragically, a young woman and 14-year-old lion were killed in a gruesome incident at The Conservators Center — a private, unlicensed wild animal menagerie — in North Carolina last week.

After only ten days of interning at the center, 22-year-old Alexandra Black was cleaning the lion enclosure when a lioness, Matthai, escaped from a locked area and attacked her.

After three tranquilizers failed to immobilize the animal for staff to retrieve the body, police officers repeatedly shot her. It took six bullets to fell the stricken lion, with two more fired into her head and chest to ensure she was dead.

It’s time to end the violence and ban private “ownership” of wild animals.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the urgent need for law changes in the four remaining US states where unaccredited and under-qualified organizations and private individuals are permitted to hold exotic animals captive.

North Carolina — along with Alabama, Nevada, and Wisconsin — are the only states left that have not yet banned private ownership of exotic species.

Sign this petition to urge these states to join the rest of the nation in outlawing private ownership of exotic wild animals, to prevent the needless loss of life of both people and animals.

USA: Milk from A Nut, Or A Cow. The FDA Does Not Think You Are Intelligent EnoughTo Distinguish The Difference !

WAV Comment – I must be one of those consumers that the FDA thinks ‘does not understand’ the difference between milk from a cow and milk from a nut.  What’s more; the following video makes it all the more difficult to understand – this man seems to be milking Almond nuts ! – and I thought you only milked cows; unlike many humans though; I do know that a cow has to be in calf in order to produce milk; that she is constantly artificially impregnated to achieve this; and any males she produces are either shot at birth or sent off at a very young age to be housed in crate type systems – causing immense distress for the (mother) cow and also for the calf.

Milking Almond nuts for Almond milk must be very specialized; but as the video shows, there are some who are prepared to do it.  As the FDA says; people really must be informed more about this whole system.  Enjoy the video; and try hard not to laugh too much !

Court Dismisses Lawsuit That Would Have Outlawed Labelling Almond Milk as ‘Milk”

The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has dismissed a court case claiming that Blue Diamond’s almond milk is deceptively mislabeled and confusing for consumers.

This decision backs up a ruling by the United States District Court for the Central District of California, which dismissed the case made by Cynthia Painter in May 2017.

The plaintiff insisted that Blue Diamond’s almond milk should be labeled as “imitation milk,” in a weak argument that alleges consumers are not smart enough to distinguish between dairy-based and plant-based milk.

The complainant alleged that the company  “deceptively markets its almond beverages as nutritionally equivalent or superior to dairy milk when, in fact, almond beverages are nutritionally inferior to dairy milk.”

Thankfully, the courts did not buy into this argument, acknowledging that consumers are aware of the products they purchase and putting a quick end to this ridiculous case.

This case is seen as a desperate attempt by the dairy industry to stifle the growing demand for plant-based alternatives. The court docket itself states that while sales of almond milk increased by around 40% between 2013-2014, dairy milk sales declined.

Rather than attribute this demand to a growing ethical and moral consumer drive, they claim that it’s because consumers think almond milk is the same thing as cow’s milk.

The memorandum released by the court of appeals concisely debunks the argument, stating:

“Painter’s complaint does not plausibly allege that a reasonable consumer would be deceived into believing that Blue Diamond’s almond milk products are nutritionally equivalent to dairy milk based on their package labels and advertising. The district court correctly concluded that “[n]o reasonable consumer could be misled by [Blue Diamond’s] unambiguous labeling or factually accurate nutritional statements.”

Although it’s reassuring to see the courts take a stand against such claims, plant-based dairy alternatives are still under the spotlight of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In September 2018, the FDA issued a notice inviting public comment on “Use of the Names of Dairy Foods in the Labeling of Plant-Based Products,” targeting things like vegan cheese, milk, and yogurt. The agency state that they are concerned that consumers may not understand the nutritional differences between dairy and non-dairy milks.

Canada: Milk out from the food pyramid

kanada flagge

Canada wants to work for a healthier diet for its citizens. The country takes milk and dairy products from its food pyramid.

Milk is unhealthy! That’s what Canada’s government claims. The country is currently working on its dietary guidelines. In the future, citizens should therefore largely refrain from using products such as milk, butter and cream. And the new food pyramid looks pretty vegan. So many vegetables, fruits, whole grains and vegetable protein, instead of animal protein in the most important place. Also unsaturated rather than saturated fatty acids should preferably be on the daily nutritional plan.

milch kannejpg

In Germany, milk and dairy products rank fourth.
According to German standards, cereals, cereal products and potatoes are the most important factors for a healthy diet, followed by vegetables and fruits.

The milk lie
Milk is healthy, important for the bones. Dairy products such as quark are good sources of protein. It’s been infused since childhood. But this claim is now more and more doubted.

As early as 2014, a Swedish study questioned the supposedly positive effects of milk on bone formation. So far, only the benefits of milk consumption have been given priority. Thus, milk contains 18 out of 22 essential nutrients that are important for bone formation. Therefore, for example, for the prevention of osteoporosis, it is recommended to drink plenty of milk.

milch

For the study, data from a total of 61,433 women aged 39 to 74 years and 45,339 men aged 45 to 79 years were interviewed regarding their dietary habits. In addition, long-term observations took place over 22 and 13 years, respectively.

Result of the study
The result showed that men with increased milk consumption had no fewer fractures. Fractures were even more frequently found in women. Terrifying: For women who consumed at least three glasses of milk daily, the mortality rate during the observation period was 93 percent higher than for women who consumed less than a glass of milk a day.
In men who drank a lot of milk, an increased mortality rate was also confirmed, but to a lesser extent.

käsejpg

Milk consumption not provided by evolution
Eating milk and dairy products is a matter of course for most people these days. However, this milk culture has developed only in the last millennia. Consumption is not evolutionary intended for humans namely. Most of the world’s population was lactose intolerant from the start. Just as it is today in many parts of the world, such as Asia and Africa. Therefore, the milk was later processed by dairy farmers into cheese and cottage cheese, as this barely has more traces of incompatible lactose. Only a random gene mutation, which prevails in part, made it ultimately possible for humans to drink milk carefree. Thus, lactose intolerance is not a disease, a defect or a blemish, but actually more natural than the ability to digest lactose.

“Milk is poison”, one reads often on the Internet. “Why is a whole country like Canada spilling milk? Canada no longer wants their populations ill, Canada wants to have healthy people in their country in the future and not sick people who are pumped full of hormones and antibiotics. ”

My comment: It’s a very good step forward, this decision from Canada.
But it still has to be accompanied by education.
It is not just the harmful effects of milk that forces us to give up.
Morality requires us to abstain from milk (and meat). Because both are associated with killing, suffering and mass animal husbandry.
The positive decision of Canada will prevail as society (and every society) learns to understand animals as valuable and equal beings in everyday life.

Stop Trump’s Assault on Whales And Dolphins!

Protect Whales and Dolphins from Seismic Blasting

The Trump administration just gave fossil fuel companies the green light to explore for oil and gas off our Atlantic coast using deafening seismic airguns.

Meanwhile, Congress is considering bad legislation that would slash critical protections for ocean wildlife. While NRDC continues to fight the administration in court, you can help protect whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals by keeping the pressure on Congress to stand strong against Trump’s giveaway to Big Oil.

The Trump administration just gave fossil fuel companies the green light to explore for oil and gas off our Atlantic coast using deafening seismic airguns — which will cause senseless harm to thousands of whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals, including endangered species like the North Atlantic right whale.

At the same time, Congress is considering bad legislation that would slash critical protections for majestic ocean wildlife when we need them more than ever. But, there’s also major bipartisan support for strong legislation that would help keep the Atlantic coast off-limits to destructive seismic exploration.

Tell your senators and representative to stand strong against Trump’s giveaway to Big Oil by opposing any attempts to expand seismic oil and gas exploration in the Atlantic — and push for strong legislation to protect our cherished coastline and save whales!

Turkey: Police Diver Smashes Through Ice to Save Puppy from Frozen Lake.

turk0001

It was a race against time and the elements to rescue a dog trapped on a frozen lake, but one brave officer was willing to tough it out to save the animal. It happened in the Van province of Turkey.

A police diver swam out to the dog and then had to use his arm to break through the ice. The dog was suffering from hypothermia and needed medical attention right away.

Give that man a medal !
