Donkeys are being wiped out in Africa by insatiable demand for their skins. African people use donkeys as transport in tasks such as water carrying. Uneducated rural people are easily persuaded to sell their animals by Chinese buyers who offer hard cash. They don’t realize that in Africa, donkeys are worth more alive than dead because in places of poor roads and poverty, donkeys offer tremendous support to local communities.
If people won’t sell their donkeys, the Chinese arrange for them to be stolen. Then the poor creatures are led into the bush where men, often drunk, wait to slaughter them. First, they are clubbed and when they fall to the ground, they are skinned alive. Yes, that’s the level of barbarism we are dealing with here.
The DOOMSDAY CLOCK is still ticking… …for 22 gentle donkeys who could have ended up skinned alive without our help!

Dear Mark,
“As we enter the Year of the Pig, could we resolve to get to know this intelligent animal a little better?” – Eline Helena Schellekens
Today is Chinese New Year and 2019 is the Year of the Pig – a powerful opportunity for us to give pigs a voice. You can speak up for all pigs suffering in intensive conditions right now: just watch and share this compelling, award-winning short film about the life of a factory-farmed piglet, premiering online today.
Every year, across the UK and EU, around 10 million sows and their piglets are locked up for weeks at a time in farrowing crates. Trapped in these cages, the mothers can barely take care of their young. The cramped conditions prevent them from turning round, restrict their natural behaviours and cause intense suffering.
‘M6NTHS’ is a short film showing life through the eyes of piglets growing up on an industrial farm, having never experienced the joy of being outside. Filmed on farms in the UK, France and Belgium, it gives a unique perspective into how factory farming treats life as a commodity and fails to recognise that animals are smart, sensitive beings.
For two weeks only, Compassion in World Farming is screening ‘M6NTHS’ on our website, in support of the campaign to End the Cage Age. Catch it while you can – it’s available from 5-18 Feb only!
Produced and directed by the award-winning, Bristol-based filmmaker Eline Helena Schellekens, this powerful film has already won the Panda Award for Best Short – the most prestigious wildlife film award.
All over Europe, people are joining together to free more than 300 million farm animals from a life in a cage. You too can take action to support one of the biggest ever animal welfare campaigns. Watch and share ‘M6NTHS’ today!

A slaughterhouse in Poland is said to have secretly killed sick animals. Tons of meat came into circulation – even in other EU countries. Warsaw authorities rule out health risks though. Nevertheless, the EU Commission determines.

The EU Commission has opened an investigation into a meat scandal at a slaughterhouse in Poland.
Inspectors are scheduled to travel to Poland on Monday to analyze the situation, a spokeswoman for the Brussels authorities said.
The factory in Masovian Voivodeship, against which Polish authorities are now investigating, (amongst other things) for illegal slaughter, was closed. About 9.5 tonnes of meat were put into circulation, one third of it to other EU countries.

At least 14 countries affected
According to the authorities, a health risk does not exist. The meat is traced back and taken off the market. At least 14 countries are affected, including Germany.
The background is a report by the Polish news channel TVN24 on scandalous practices in a slaughterhouse in Masovian Voivodeship. There, sick animals were secretly slaughtered and the meat was circulated. A reporter had joined the company as a worker.

“That was an illegal procedure”
Pawel Niemczuk, head of the Polish Veterinary Office, confirmed the illegal practices: “This was an illegal procedure at night when there was no veterinary supervision.”
According to the EU Commission, apart from Poland, Germany, France, Spain, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Portugal are affected as well. The extent is not yet completely clear, as it was called.
Polish authorities have removed meat and products from the market for illegal slaughter, but they have put their health and lives at risk.
The meat and products made from it could be consumed, informed veterinary and sanitary office after investigations.
Criticism from the Czech Republic
However, Poland’s Minister of Agriculture, Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski, spoke of an isolated case. This fraud was a pity for the reputation of Polish food, he criticized. Warsaw announced in response to tightened controls of slaughterhouses.
The Czech Minister of Agriculture Miroslav Toman criticized on television the information policy of Warsaw. “We have been assured several times that the meat was not shipped to the Czech Republic,” he said.

My comment: Cheer!! The EU has certainly found something to justify its existence: the protection of consumer health!! Although it is too late, the 9.5 tons of “sick” meat are a long time ago eaten.
The EU Commissioners are not interested in animals that are used illegally in slaughterhouses even though they are ill, and although the law (the EU law !!) requires emergency slaughter.
For sick animals, pregnant cows and newborn calves that are illegally transported in Europe, the EU is not interested.
And all these sacrifices produce more than 9.5 tons of meat per year!
Because they are “only” animals and the EU knows very well that its voters are not the animals but the meat consumers. So it has to pretend to protect them.
Nobody seriously believes that of all the EU countries only Poland in factory farming is the “sinner”. But the EU (more precisely: Germany) has divided its partners into the first and second category, Poland belongs to the second. For political reasons, which are not relevant here to mention.
For example, there are still 800 fur farms in Poland where animals suffer cruelly, but that has never been a problem for the EU. Despite the thousand petition signatures.
No MEP has ever been interested in it.
Actually, the “sick” meat does not interest the EU either.
It is only a welcome tool of manipulation for EU citizens, so we all forget what the real problem with factory farming in the EU is.
My best regards, Venus

Rare snowfall in China sanctuary creates a moon bear wonderland
As the new year dawns, and snow coats our China sanctuary, hope builds for nearly 800 bears holding on for rescue in Vietnam.
Happy New Year!
Over the New Year period, our sanctuary in Chengdu, China enjoyed a rare dusting of snow which transformed the sanctuary into a glorious winter wonderland.
For the bears it was their first proper snowfall in many years and they absolutely loved it. They rushed out of their dens to explore the snow-dusted enclosures and took great delight in stomping, eating and digging around in the most wonderful natural enrichment mother nature can provide.

While much of the world was enjoying chocolates under the tree and hearty family feasts, sanctuary staff spent the festive season with the bears. They continued to work round the clock throughout the holiday, keeping the bears’ tummies full and their hearts happy.
The China team had a sick bear on their hands, who is slowly improving thanks to their relentless care throughout both the days and nights of his ongoing recovery.
With 366 bears presently in our care, we can’t afford to switch off for a single day, and that is a commitment only possible thanks to our fabulous friends and supporters around the world.
It is you who kept that sick bear safe over the holidays. You kept Kevin smiling and hungry beauty Nicole satiated with all her favourite treats.
Your compassion gives hope too to all the bears holding on for rescue. Together with the Vietnamese government, we will rescue up to 800 bears by 2022. This is far and away the greatest challenge we’ve ever taken on – perhaps the greatest challenge any animal welfare charity has ever faced – but I know we can do it because we have you on our side.
You give me hope, because every year I am amazed at what you can do. The time you devote, the funds you ingeniously raise, and the attention you command when you tell the world what we’re doing.
Work continues on plans for how such an enormous number of rescues can be carried out and the long-term future care of every bear assured, and we hope to have exciting progress to share with you later in 2019.

I wish the greatest health and happiness to everyone in our Animals Asia family across the world – staff, volunteers, friends and supporters – because together we have shown how effective we can be for the animals of this vast and magnificent continent, and they need us so very much in 2019.
With endless thanks to you for keeping the magic of the dream we share alive and wishing you the happiest and healthiest 2019, with love and never ending bear hugs from us all, your family, Animals Asia.

The European Commission’s formal reaction to the petition “End Pig Pain”, which asks to phase out tail docking, tooth clipping and castration, is a blow for pigs all over Europe, where these painful and unnecessary practices are still taking place as a matter of course in many countries.

Commissioner Andriukaitis’ response to the petition of more than 1 million citizens’ signatures, which was delivered in November 2018, recognises the severity of the situation but gives no concrete answer to supporters’ pleas (!!!)
Eurogroup for Animals’ 2017 flagship campaign End Pig Pain called on the European Commission and national agricultural ministers to enforce the ban on routine tail docking and tooth clipping of pigs, to put an end to painful piglet castration, and provide better rearing conditions for pigs.

Every year millions of male piglets are castrated in the EU to avoid the risk of boar taint, and unnecessary routine tail docking and tooth clipping of piglets continues to happen in many EU member states in violation of existing EU laws.
The campaign’s goal to collect 1 million signatures from EU citizens was reached in autumn 2018, but the EC’s response, received this week, says only that it believes that actions such as the establishment of the EU Platform on Animal Welfare – which brings together Member States and stakeholders from different backgrounds to enhance dialogue on animal welfare issues – will ‘enable the pig sector to gradually reduce the number of tail-docked pigs over time’(!!!)

The petition also asked for a specific date for phasing out piglet castration, but this issue isn’t even mentioned in the response.
“For now it seems that the Commission still doesn’t envisage decisive action against Member States that are blatantly ignoring EU legislation,” says Reineke Hameleers, Director of Eurogroup for Animals.
“The battle to obtain enforcement of an animal welfare provision that has supposedly been in force for 25 years goes on.”
My comment: the basic qualification to do the job of a MEP is corruption.
And brain impotence.
To become EU Commissioner for Animal Welfare, one only needs to hate animals and animal rights activists, that’s all.
Lobbying, exploitation, mendacity, fraud … these are the basic characteristics of an EU commissioner, who is responsible for the welfare of the animals.
Who has any responsibility in this shit store?
Who does his job conscientiously, transparently, consistently? who steps forward and makes decisions?
None!
Sponsored by the agricultural industry, the meat industry, with the taxpayers’ money and with the connivance of the unsuspecting citizens, they vote for the preservation of every unimaginable torture of the animals.
Andriukaitis deserves all contempt, and the whole EU gang to it.
EU has no existence authorization.
It’s a parasitic garbage pile!
My best regards, Venus

A farmer who became too upset when taking his lambs to the abattoir gave his flock to an animal sanctuary.

Sivalingam Vasanthakumar, from Totnes, Devon, took the 20 male lambs nearly 200 miles (321km) to Goodheart Animal Sanctuaries, near Kidderminster.
Mr Vasanthakumar, a farmer for 47 years, said: “I just couldn’t cope any more and I had to say no.”
The sanctuary, which looks after 220 animals, said it had never received lambs from a farmer before.

The lambs will live on a 91 acre site at the sanctuary
Mr Vasanthakumar said he had previously worked as a dairy farmer with his parents in Sri Lanka but had also been a farmer in the UK for “many years”.
“It was taking them to the slaughterhouse and that was stressing me out a lot,” he said.
Mr Vasanthakumar said he also hated to see the “animals going through that stress”.
Mr Vasanthakumar decided to change his career several months ago when he would normally take the lambs to market.
“I realised this year, I couldn’t do it. The emotional toll had become too much,” he said.
He said he cooks Indian dishes and planned to sell these and his home-grown vegetables at a Totnes street market instead.
“I will still be in the farming world, but not livestock farming anymore,” he said.
Sanctuary manager Dave Bourne said there were only a “handful” of sanctuaries the UK that rehomed rescued farm animals.

From Mark:
Today, 1/2/19 is a day of great sadness for all of us who have been involved with live animal exports in the UK. Today marks the day when in 1995 our beloved Jill was crushed to death under the wheels of a livestock transporter carrying live calves into Coventry Airport for them to be flown to Europe and the crate systems that existed at the time – 1995.

Read a lot more about Jill and her history here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jill_Phipps
On 1 February 1995, Phipps was one of 35 protesters at Coventry Airport in Baginton, protesting at the export of live calves to Amsterdam for distribution across Europe. Ten protesters broke through police lines and were trying to bring the lorry to a halt by sitting in the road or chaining themselves to it when Phipps was crushed beneath the lorry’s wheels; her fatal injuries included a broken spine.
She died on the way to the hospital accompanied by her brother Zab.[2] Phipps’ death received a large amount of publicity, being brought up at Prime Minister’s question time in the House of Commons.[1]
Jill was killed at the Coventry protests; Veal calf exports from Coventry Airport ended months later, when the aviation firm belonging to the pilot responsible for the veal flights, Christopher Barrett-Jolly, went bankrupt following accusations of running guns from Slovakia to Sudan in breach of EU rules.
In 2002 he was charged with smuggling 271 kg of cocaine worth £22 Million from Jamaica into Southend airport in Essex, England. He was given a 20 year prison sentence. Read more:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-150358/Cocaine-smuggling-businessman-jailed.html

All these years (24 to be exact) on after Jill’s death fighting for animals; ceremonies and tributes are still held at this time to remember the ‘warrior of the rainbow’ who simply wanted the world to be a better place, and for animals to be respected in parallel to the human race.
Give a minute please to remember Jill today and what she died fighting for.
Even today; I still personally get upset a the loss of this beautiful person – there is no justice ! – I have seen, heard and smelt the calf export transporters – they bring shame to us all.
1/2/19 – Still Scottish farmers try to export live calves through England to Europe !
Even today (1/2/19) , this very morning; Scottish farmers intended to send their male calves; and unwanted ‘by product’ of the dairy industry, from Ramsgate port in England, to their deaths in Europe for meat eaters. Fortunately, todays sailing has been cancelled due to snow and bad weather conditions between Scotland and Ramsgate here in Kent on the SE coast of England, my home county. As Rab says in the fil, the common link throughout is one of mothers being separated from their children – dairy cows crying for their baby calves; and Nancy Phipps being separated from her daughter Jill who was killed at the protests.
Thank You
Mark.

The proposed sailing of the Joline today has been cancelled due to the weather conditions for loading in Scotland. Thank you to all the efforts of our supporters who have made this happen.
WE ARE STILL HOLDING THE MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR JILL PHIPPS AT RAMSGATE TODAY 12 TILL 2PM AND KEITH TAYLOR MEP IS STILL COMING SO YOU CAN QUESTION THE GREENS POLICY;
We are still holding the service at Dover tomorrow (2/2/19) 12 till 3pm.
THE SHIP IS STILL COMING ACROSS, IT SET OFF 30 MINUTES AGO AND IT IS TO STAND IN RAMSGATE UNTIL EITHER SUNDAY, WHEN THE EXPORTERS WANT TO SAIL OR MONDAY WHICH THE POLICE WOULD PREFER
WE WILL LET YOU KNOW AS WE NEED TO SEE THESE CALVES WHO HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SEVERAL DAYS NOW
Please try to come to the memorial
