England: All Creatures Are My Family.

Anyone who is a regular to this site will be aware of the beautiful photos that Pauline sends me regarding wildlife around London and the River Thames. Pauline also visits my home to do a bit of Badger watching if they decide to show up early enough to enjoy all the food that is put out for them; and importantly for us, to be seen ! – they are being rascals lately and arriving well late !

You can visit all of the past Pauline photos by clicking on the following section of the site:

Well P told me recently that she was having a tattoo on her arm relating to both veganism (she is Vegan) and animal welfare. Last week she contacted me again and said that it had been done, but was still covered in a protective plaster. Now the plaster has ben removed but it will probably take about 6 weeks to look its best. So here is the current version, and I am promised another photo in a few weeks time.

‘All creatures are my family’ + Vegan symbol.

Thanks Pauline; great reminder of all your work for the animals.

Regards Mark and Pauline

Italy: Mass pig culling continues in Italy amid African swine fever crisis.

Mass pig culling continues in Italy amid African swine fever crisis

14 September 2023

Essere Animali

Essere Animali documented serious biosecurity and animal welfare shortcomings in the management of pig culling.

First detected in Italy in January 2022, African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects domestic and wild pigs. Whilst posing no threat to humans, mass culls have been taking place in an attempt to limit the spread of the disease amongst farmed pigs to reduce losses for farmers.

New footage obtained by Essere Animali in the province of Pavia shows inadequately culled animals subjected to slow and painful deaths, and serious deficiencies in hygiene and biosecurity that may lead to further spread of the virus on farms.

The footage shows:

Serious deficiencies in the facility and in the biosecurity procedures

Inadequate management of culling with severe additional suffering for the animals

The lack of animal welfare training of the workers involved

At least 5 pigs abandoned on the ground in the pen leading to the killing containers in an acute distressed condition with symptoms potentially attributable to ASF

The organisation also claims that improper implementation of biosecurity measures by the nation’s health authorities have resulted in the inability to control the spread of the disease, resulting in emergency mass culls that are a disaster for animal welfare.

We think it is essential to show images that show that, in the face of all the failings of the health authorities and our institutions, in a period of time in which public money has been spent on inadequate measures and biosecurity has not been sufficiently stringent, it is the tens of thousands of pigs that will be slaughtered in these days, amidst atrocious suffering and in the absence of adequate stunning, who will pay the highest price.

UK:

Animal cruelty content targeted in Online Safety Bill amendment

Social media platforms will be required to proactively remove animal torture content on their sites under an amendment to the Online Safety Bill tabled by the Government.

The update to the proposed online safety laws – which are currently moving through Parliament – would require platforms to put systems and processes in place to tackle content that encourages or facilitates animal torture.

The amendment would see such content classified as a priority offence in the Bill – alongside content like child sexual abuse, threats to kill and revenge pornography – which firms are required to remove or face fines of up to £18 million or 10% of their global annual revenue.

Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan said: “This kind of activity is deeply disturbing and not something an animal-friendly nation like the UK should ever tolerate.

Inside Arabia’s camel contests: ‘Preparing my animals for a beauty pageant takes lots of time’

In shaded compounds across the Arabian Peninsula, comely camels doze contentedly despite the 45°C heat while their doting handlers dream of the multimillion-pound prizes to be won at beauty pageants their camels will compete in in the coming cooler months.

Abdullah Said Al-Malki’s sprawling farm near the coastal city of Barka in Oman, 40 miles from the capital Muscat, is renowned for producing a series of pageant winners. His current stable of leggy supermodels are tall and blonde, with attitudes to match, that can earn hundreds of thousands of rials strutting the parade grounds of the Gulf states.

Animal rights advocates mourn passing of Lolita, decry orca’s ‘miserable’ living conditions at Miami Seaquarium

VIRGINIA KEY, FLA. (WSVN) – A devastated community came together to hold a moving memorial for Lolita, the beloved killer whale who called Miami Seaquarium home for over half a century.

After more than half a century of living in captivity, the orca, also known as Toki, died on Friday, Miami Seaquarium officials said.

Animal rights advocates who spoke with 7News did not hold back when reacting to the marine mammal’s passing.

She was stolen as a baby from her family when she was meant to be living in the wild,” said one advocate.

Wales (UK): Victory – Snares Are Banned In Wales Despite Intensive Lobbying By The Hunters / Shooters.

For those of you who are non UK residents, the United Kingdon comprises of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.  Each has its own Parliament.

Great news – on June 27th, members of the Senedd in Wales voted through a total ban on snares as part of the Agriculture (Wales) Bill.

The next step is to make sure that this historic achievement is replicated by English, Scottish and Northern Ireland governments.

Snares are often used in areas to ‘protect’ the millions of purpose bred gamebirds (until the start of the shooting season) which are then shot and killed for fun by hunters each year – the sick ‘sport’ as they call it.  In the UK, lots of wildlife conservation organisations do not allow the use of snares on their land; which proves that despite the arguments put forward by the hunting fraternity, the use of snares is not necessary in modern conservation.

Snares are not selective as they often catch non targeted animals such as dogs, cats, and even our loved and protected badgers.

The ban on snares in Wales has been a difficult and long campaign; especially with pressure from pro-shooting lobbyists who wanted to allow the continued use of snares under a new name of ‘humane cable restraints’.  There is nothing humane about snares, they are simple killers, and yes, animals are restrained until their deaths which can be long and cause great suffering.

The Minister for Rural Affairs in Wales, Lesley Griffiths, stood firm and rejected the allowance of ‘humane cable restraints’ by the hunters; citing animal welfare concerns and the indiscriminate nature of snares, which can cause long term suffering to many species.

The victory in Wales is a wonderful result for the movement and one which will save countless animals from appalling suffering.  We thank the Welsh government (Senedd) for their decisive action to protect all animals from suffering.  The next step is to make sure that this historic achievement in Wales is replicated in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Scottish government already has the issue under review, and there is an opportunity ton ban snares under the Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Bill which is currently in its early stages.

England and NI; a parliamentary petition on nares obtained more than the 100,000 signatures required, resulting last year in a Westminster (London) debate in Parliament at the tart of this year.  Sadly, as we all know the regard current animal welfare s, the government is again dragging its feet in taking any action.  I wrote about this recently – https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2023/08/11/england-here-we-go-again-government-bullshit-promises-on-actions-already-making-their-way-through-parliament-which-would-have-given-animals-more-protection/

It is now vital that pressure on snares is kept on MP’s and the government; and that they know that action to ban nars throughout the UK is taken.  As a General Election is not far away now, there is never a better time to let the government know that in your opinion, THEY are failing animal in every sense.
