Nightmare comes true for Romanian sheep exported to the Gulf.

WAV Comment – as some of you will be aware, we at WAV were tracking and reporting on this consignment throughout its time between Romania and Iran.

Here are just 3 of our links from the time:

https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2019/08/01/romanian-sheep-ship-update-1-8-19-1020hrsgmt-vessel-now-entering-kuwait-city-expected-to-dock-0300hrs-local/

Well it seems that all of our concerns at the time regarding how the sheep would be treated, as well as the extreme temperatures which we reported on throughout the trip, have now surfaced. Please read the article below.

It was not only this shipment that has caused us concern. We were informed that Romania was planning on exporting around 200,000 live sheep to the middle east every month for the next 6 months or so. This is backed up in the report below which talks of 1 million sheep planned for export to the Gulf. We repeat what is said in the article:

“It is clear that sheep have suffered terribly throughout this entire journey, and that’s before we even mention the routine abuse and fully conscious slaughter they are subjected to when they arrive at their destinations,” said Gabriel Paun. “These sheep come from the green meadows and high mountains of the Romanian countryside, and the contrast in how they are treated in the live export trade is unimaginable.”

Now that sun kissed MEP’s have finally returned from their Summer holidays; probably mostly oblivious to what has been going on, we call on them to take action to stop the export trade from Romania. As we said recently we will be writing to our MEPs on this issue and also that of the ‘box’ trailers (see picture below of sheep transporter) which are used to carry live animals all over Europe.

article 2

Yes it is full of live sheep – a ‘box’ trailer as used in the EU.

Also, as we published, there have been major problems regarding cattle being shipped from Brazil to Turkey. What a terrible journey that must be for the animals; only to be religiously slaughtered once they arrive in Turkey, not even considering the carbon footprint which is left by a ship hauling cattle half way round the world. The massive fires in Amazonia just show that cattle ranchers there are burning the land to make yet more space for cattle to be raised; for export half way round the world !

These are all issues we will be raising with the EU in the next few weeks. We will publish our letters and concerns; and reproduce any correspondence we get back from the EU.

Regards Mark

From the Eurogroup for Animals Website:

https://www.eurogroupforanimals.org/nightmare-comes-true-for-romanian-sheep-exported-to-persian-gulf

Animal protection organisations are calling for infringement proceedings against Romania, which allowed 66,000 sheep to be exported to the Persian Gulf in the middle of summer, despite the EU Commission urging authorities not to allow the vessel to leave.

In a recent letter to Animals International, Romanian authorities claim they required a 20% reduction in stocking density to mitigate heat stress. But the organization’s evidence, presented last week to the EU Commission, reveals that hundreds of sheep died by the time they reached their destinations, with an investigator describing the “piles of dead sheep” that were filmed at the unloading point in the Gulf.

They also saw surviving sheep being “beaten” as they disembarked in temperatures of over 40°C. While the initial destination was Kuwait, the vessel made 5 stops in the Gulf, increasing the risks of suffering and death from heat stress. Animals were unloaded in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Dubai, Qatar and Oman.

Romania’s daily reports were requested by the Commission after Commissioner Andriukaitis’s call on 10th July to Petre Daea, the Romanian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, to stop the cruel shipment was ignored. “These reports cannot be true. The vessel is a shipwreck that will not be allowed in Australia after the end of this year for being unable to have enough ventilation and access to animals. Even a single sheep on an empty deck will suffer severe heat stress once the temperature and humidity rises on the ship. The ship’s ventilation system is not able to reduce the heat and humidity below the ambient temperature, and in fact the temperature and humidity in the sheep pens will regularly be between 2 and 6 degrees higher than outside the ship. Even if stocking density was halved, the remaining sheep would still be subjected to unbearably high temperatures and would suffer heat stress during these months in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf,” said Gabriel Paun, EU Director of Animals International.

According to the Romanian authorities, this was just the first shipment. Over one million sheep are planned to be exported this year alone to the Gulf, in addition to a further one million animals to be sent to Jordan and Libya from Romania. Such journeys see heat and humidity combinations reach levels that cause heat stroke, resulting in sheep literally cooking alive in the holds of vessels.

There is one light at the end of the tunnel: a proposed law by the Romanian Parliament aims to follow the positive example of Australia and prohibit the sea transport of livestock during the summer months, which would make it the first EU Member State to have such regulations. But Animals International says that even if the law is rushed through in September, it won’t necessarily mean that no more sheep undergo such journeys in the future, as exporters have their eye on at least three other European countries as sources of animals.

Eurogroup for Animals and Animals International had a meeting with the EU Commission last week, during which they presented some of the distressing footage from the Middle East. Both organisations are calling on the Commission to start infringement proceedings against Romania.

EXCLUSIVE: Cowardly and cruel trophy hunters start young – while Geneva convention sees calls for complete ban to barbaric, outdated hunting holidays.

Cruel trophy hunting kills, like the ones organised by Umilio Safaris , are legal as long as it complies with a country’s existing hunting legislation.

Some safari hunting firms even encourage trophy hunters to bow hunt monkeys and baboons.

This increases the likelihood of painful, life-altering injuries or a long, painful death if the animal, sometimes shot by amateur hunters, manages to escape.

Shockingly African Hunt Lodge, which operators a “no kill, no fee” policy, also arranges hunts for children.

A photo on its site taken in June shows a small child named Nolan holding a rifle just seconds after a vervet monkey was shot.

It is not known what nationality he is.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes, (above) – British explorer and adventurer, backed the Mirror campaign to end trophy hunting.

He said: “Trophy hunting of any species is utterly objectionable. But it is completely inhuman to shoot creatures who are so like us. What on earth were these people thinking when they bought a ‘monkey hunting holiday’?

“They should be utterly ashamed of themselves and are a disgrace to our country. This is as cowardly and as cruel as trophy hunting gets.

“The people who do this should be in jail. This is a crime against nature.

“We should hang our heads in shame that people from Britain do this and that our government allows hunters to bring these sick trophies home with them.

“We need to ban all trophy hunting. We should start by outlawing the import of hunting trophies into Britain”.

Peter Egan, actor and animal activist, added: “These are perhaps the most horrifying and revolting images I have ever seen. There is nothing brave or sporting about trophy hunting.

“But to kill small monkeys who are used to living alongside humans just beggars belief.

“What kind of world do we live in when some people dare to call this ‘sport’? It completely exposes the ludicrous claim made by industry lobbyists that trophy hunting is just ‘conservation’.

Above – Peter Egan – British Actor and animal welfare campaigner.

“Nobody believes their lies. It is just sadism pure and simple.

“The sooner Britain bans the import of hunting trophies the better. It’s what British people want, and I hope the government delivers it as soon as possible. We need a compete global ban on this sick industry”.

Fake-meat and fries: The rise of vegan fast food

From meat-free burgers to sausage rolls, vegan foods are growing in popularity.

One in six food products launched in the UK in 2018 claimed to be vegan or free of animal ingredients – more than in any other country, according to market research company Mintel.

A range of new offerings, and the involvement of big brands, has meant more options for consumers and the emergence of vegan fast food.

What’s behind the trend, and is there such a thing as vegan ‘junk food’?

PETITION TARGET: Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Anatoly Antonov

A Russian restaurant in the region of Kabardino-Balkarian Republic is holding a lion and bear captive in miserable conditions. The neglected animals are suffering day in and out in cramped metal enclosures with a hard concrete floor and no space to move, roam, or act naturally.

An eyewitness informed LFT of the sad plight of these helpless animals after visiting Cafe Karavan. The animals are caged directly next to the restaurant for people to look at. They have zero interactions with other animals and live a lonely, dejected life.

In these exclusive eyewitness photos, a skinny lion and bear live side by side in barren cages. A small vat of murky water is visible along with an open crate that is too small to provide adequate shelter from the elements.

Lady Freethinker has uncovered a TripAdvisor review from 2017 confirming that the bear and lion were caged at Cafe Karavan at that time. There are also pictures of the bear and lion on the TripAdvisor page dedicated to the restaurant.

It is time to save these poor animals from this life of misery.

Sign this petition urging Russian Ambassador to the US Antonov to take action by demanding that these beautiful animals be freed from imprisonment and rehomed to a sanctuary to live in peace and freedom.

UK Prime Minister Adopts Little Puppy Thrown Out By Sick (Welsh Puppy Farm) Traders.

UNKG0001

UK Prime Minister and girlfriend adopt a Jack Russell puppy saved from sick dog traders, it was revealed last night.

The Prime Minister and his girlfriend Carrie will own the dog themselves - meaning it will go with them if they leave Downing Street

Boris and Carrie

The 15-week-old pup – which faced near-certain death after being abandoned by a Welsh farmer, has moved into No. 10 today, 2/9.

He was cast away by his ruthless breeder for having an undershot and misaligned jaw – meaning he couldn’t be sold, the Mail On Sunday reports.

The Jack Russell puppy believed to have been adopted by Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds

Lucky Pup

The as-yet-unnamed pup was then rescued by Eileen Jones of the volunteer group Friends of Animals Wales – which rehabilitates sick and discarded animals.

Unlike Larry the No10 cat, the dog will belong to Boris and Ms Symonds rather than whoever occupies Downing Street.

Children visiting Downing Street pet Larry the No10 Cat

Larry the No 10 Cat is a favourite with children; the Press crews, everyone !

And he will be trained to get along with chief mouser Larry – who is famously territorial.

VOTED FOR PUP

Staff have offered to take the pup on walks after voting overwhelmingly in favour of getting a dog when polled by the PM.

Staff have even offered to take the new pup on walks

It comes as Boris and Ms Symonds hope to raise awareness for strict new anti-puppy farming legislation.

Known as Lucy’s Law, the clampdown will come into force next April and targets third- party puppy sellers who breed dogs often in brutal conditions.

Lucy’s Law is named after tragic pet Lucy – a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who died of her injuries just three years after being rescued from a terrible puppy farm.

The new legislation – backed by celebs Ricky Gervais, Rachel Riley and Brian May – will make it illegal for a puppy or kitten to be sold without seeing it interacting with its mother in the place where it was born.

PupAid founder Marc Abraham, who helped spearhead the legislation, said last night: “I’m absolutely delighted that the Prime Minister and Carrie have chosen to rescue a puppy, which will hugely help to highlight Lucy’s Law.’

He added: “Eileen is an absolute hero who has racked up massive vets’ bills picking up these poorly puppies and breeding dogs.

“I hope this encourages others to adopt and donate to her work.”

Boris and Carrie are both animal welfare supporters – we hope that this sees a bright future for animals during his time in Downing Street.

Taiji cove hunt: Japan starts controversial dolphin hunt

2 September 2019

Dolphins are rounded up in Taiji, Japan (Jan 2014)

Japan has started its controversial annual dolphin hunt in the coastal town of Taiji.

The hunt sees the animals driven into a cove where most are slaughtered for their meat with knives in shallow waters.

Other dolphins are sold to aquariums and marine parks.

The Taiji hunt has been carried out for decades and gained global attention when it was the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary The Cove in 2009.

Japan this year also resumed catching whales for profit, in defiance of international criticism.

This year’s Taiji hunt kicked off on Sunday, but according to Japanese media the boats returned without any dolphins.

According to environmentalist group The Dolphin Project, five Risso’s dolphins were killed on Monday.

The overall quota for the season allows for more than 1,700 animals to be killed or captured.

Environmentalists say the drive hunt is extremely cruel and the dolphins can take up to 30 minutes to die by suffocation or drowning.

Yet the fisherman from Taiji say the community’s livelihood is dependent on the trade.

The dolphin hunting season is expected to last for about six month.

Demand for dolphin and whale meat has been on the decline over the past years and both have been found to have unhealthy levels of mercury.

Animals caught alive and sold to marine parks fetch a far higher price than the meat yet there is growing pressure on the parks not to buy dolphins captured in Taiji.

Japan has already come under criticism this year for resuming commercial whaling after it left the International Whaling Commission (IWC).

Commercial whaling ships left port on 1 July this year and the first whales have already been killed and sold.

Under an IWC moratorium, whaling had effectively been banned since 1986.

Japan though had never fully stopped whaling – it has been conducting what it said were research missions killing hundreds of animals each year.

Australia: The gruesome history of the Bader III live export ship.

Australia

I just came across this article today when looking around. As you know live animal exports is our biggest ‘hate’. With the recent issues we have covered re the 70,000 Romanian sheep to Iran, and the very recent troubles with the livestock ship carrying cattle from Brazil to Turkey not being allowed to dock in Spain, it seemed appropriate to get more facts. Here they are; with thanks to the RSPCA (Australia):

The gruesome history of the Bader III live export ship – which docks at Port Adelaide this week

https://www.rspcasa.org.au/live-export-bader-ship/

April 19, 2018

As Australians reel at sickening images taken by a whistleblower onboard several routine live export shipments, another vessel is due to dock in Port Adelaide this week to begin loading more sheep for the Middle East market.

Like most live export carriers, the Bader III has an appalling record of extreme animal suffering and mass deaths. The phase-out of this cruel trade must start now.

bad1

The Bader III’s latest victims of this trade are also headed to the Middle East. Livestock Shipping Services knows and presumably accepts that a percentage of its cargo will not survive.

Questions are now being raised about the role of insurance in the live export trade. Just how much live exporters like Livestock Shipping Services receive per dead sheep from their insurers is unknown.

But if mortality rates are any indication, there appears to be little commercial incentive to achieve what is surely the main aim of this trade, to deliver sheep that – by journey’s end – are still alive.

bad2

RSPCA South Australia believes it’s high time our state’s reputation-damaging involvement in this inhumane and unnecessary trade ends. Please join us in demanding a phase-out of long-haul sheep shipments from SA. Add your voice here.

Sobering reading: official reports of mass sheep deaths

When large numbers of Australian animals die on live export ships, Australia’s Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) is required to investigate and produce a report. These reports make for sobering reading.

Ships belonging to one of the largest live export companies operating from Australia, the Perth-based Livestock Shipping Services, frequently feature in AQIS reports. The Livestock Shipping Services ship Bader III, due to dock in Port Adelaide on Thursday April 19, is no exception.

bad4

The Bader III is one of just three live export vessels that are two-tiered. This means animals are packed into two levels of pens on each deck, making welfare checks during the long sea crossings difficult if not impossible. This design also restricts the crucial ventilation needed to prevent heat stress.

AQIS’ Mortality Report Number 46 tells us that on August 17, 2013, nearly 45,000 sheep walked up the ramps on to the Bader III at Port Adelaide, along with an unknown number of camels.

The ship travelled on to Fremantle, where a further 30,795 sheep and some cattle were packed into pens onboard. The stocking density was in accordance with the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock.

Bader III ship holds awful record for highest sheep deaths

The hottest time in the Middle East are the middle months of the year. Data shows that sheep deaths spike on board live export carriers entering the region at this time. The mercury climbed as the Bader III crossed the equator bound for its first Middle Eastern destination, Qatar.

Something went terribly wrong on Day 21 of this shipment, when the Bader III finally arrived in Qatar’s port city of Doha. The temperature in Doha on this day – 7 September 2013 – hovered around 38C. As the crew began offloading sheep, a staggering 4050 died – one of the largest numbers of exported Australian sheep to die onboard a ship in a single day.

Almost 80% of the sheep that died were from the Adelaide consignment. Unsurprisingly, the live export vet reported that most died from heat stress.

Thousands of sheep deaths legally sanctioned every live export journey

Under Australian regulations, live exporters must report to the Federal Agriculture Department if the mortality rate of sheep onboard ships exceeds 2%. The official end of journey death toll of 4,179 sheep on this 2013 shipment of 75,508 sheep represents a mortality rate of 5.53%. For the sheep loaded in Port Adelaide, the mortality rate was 7.28%.

Under our Federal Government’s 2% rule, more than 1,500 sheep had to die onboard this particular shipment before Livestock Shipping Services were required to make a report that would trigger an investigation by the regulator, Australia’s Federal Department of Agriculture.

That is a lot of dead sheep.

If less than 2% of sheep had died – say, 1400 on this 2013 shipment – that would have been considered an ordinary part of the live export business.

Even sheep that don’t die suffer terribly on live export ships

However, the number of dead animals on its own is not a good indicator of animal welfare. The ones that don’t die equally suffer.

The latest images aired on 60 Minutes give a shocking insight of what mass death and extreme animal suffering on board a routine live export shipment during the Middle East’s summer looks like.

Sheep unable to reach food and water. Sheep unable to lie down for the entire three to four week journey. Sheep panting and frothing at the mouth from heat stress and collapsing on decks belly-deep in excrement.

Yet still our Federal Government keeps issuing export permits to companies that routinely breach regulations, and the animals keep being loaded in full knowledge of the suffering that inevitably awaits them.

bad5

China: Zoo’s Visitor Sees (Obviously Bored Stiff) Monkey Sharpening A Rock, Later It Uses It To Shatter Its Glass Enclosure -Wants the Right Thing; to Get Away From the Terribly Sparse Conditions.

China

WAV Comment – Looking at the desolation of this facility; no wonder the primate is trying to escape ! – anyone would in his position – where are the trees and climbing facilities to allow it to keep sane ? – obviously the primate has a bigger brain than the zoo management.

Zoo’s Visitor Sees Monkey Sharpening A Rock, Later It Uses It To Shatter Its Glass Enclosure

They said that Planet of the Apes was fiction. They were wrong! Some of us have always had an inkling that monkeys are far smarter than they let on. And now they’ve figured out what they have to do to escape zoos! Well, at least one monkey has that information. But I’m pretty sure others will soon follow suit.

Visitors at Zhengzhou Zoo in Central China were witnesses to an amazing sight: a cute monkey used a stone to break the glass wall of its enclosure. However, zoo visitors weren’t the only ones surprised — the Columbian white-faced Capuchin scarpered once it realized what it had done.

The Daily Mail writes that one tourist, Mr. Wang, said that “the monkey was sharpening the stone, then it started hitting it on the glass. The monkey scared itself away, but it came back to take another look and even touched it.” Was what the monkey did simply an accident? Or was the Capuchin only pretending to be scared at first, so we wouldn’t suspect it had other nefarious plans?

Meanwhile, one of the zoo’s staff Tian Shuliao told the media that “this monkey is unlike other monkeys. This one knows how to use tools to break walnuts. When we feed walnuts to other monkeys, they only know to bite it. But it had never hit the glass before though. This is the first time. It’s toughened glass, so it would never have got out. After it happened, we picked up all the rocks and took away all its ‘weapons’.”

As surprising as it sounds, quite a few members of the animal kingdom know how to use tools, and not all of them are monkeys. According to Live Science, chimpanzees use stone tools and even make spears for hunting other primates. While crows use a wide range of tools, from twigs to their own feathers.

Sea animals are crafty as well. Everyone’s beloved sea otters (the incredibly fuzzy ones) use rocks to hit abalone shells off of stones and crack them open. Octopuses, on the other hand, go for a more defensive application of tools: they use coconut shells as portable armour.

Just in case there’s a monkey uprising in the near future, I’m going to rewatch all the Planet of the Apes films. There might be some good tips on what to do there. What do you think of animals who can use tools proficiently? Do you think tool-wielding monkeys will build their own empire and take over the planet?

A whale calf, not yet fully formed, lies beside its mum's organs

This is the eleventh hunt this year – with over 600 pilot whales slaughtered in so far in 2019.

The brutal tradition attracts spectators who stand at the edge of the crimson water and watch the mass slaughter

Sea Shepherd, a non-profit sea conservation charity, were there to document the slaughter in the islands in between Iceland and Norway.

The hunt, also known as ‘the grind’ lasted for more than 5 hours with the Faroese boats harassing and chasing the pod of whales.

The killing of the creatures, who are not yet identified as endangered due to the lack of documentation, took 12 minutes.

OVER 600 KILLED THIS YEAR

Other pictures captured by the charity show the dumping of the remains of the whales back into the sea with some people questioning why it happens in the first place.

One Instagrammer said: “Such a waste, they literally died for nothing.”

The whales are allegedly slaughtered for their meat and blubber and often tourists will watch as the sea turns red with blood.

This centuries-old tradition helps feed the population of the remote Atlantic island over winter with the Faroese locals claiming it is sustainable and regulated by law.

But campaign groups say it is inhumane and want the hunts banned.

The whales' meat and blubber is harvested

THE grind, or grindadrap, is a yearly whale hunt that takes place on the Faroe Islands.

During a grind, a flotilla of small boats drives whales or dolphins into a shallow bay where they can be easily killed with knives.

Grinds are the longest continuously practiced and relatively unchanged whaling tradition in the world, says Russell Fielding, a geographer from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.

He has studied the Faroe Island grinds since 2005.

“They do feel a real cultural attachment to [the grinds],” notes Fielding. “However, the Faroese are quick to point out that it is for food primarily.”

The meat can be boiled, broiled as a steak, or air-dried, says Bjarki Dalsgarŏ, a 28-year-old Faroese who has participated in grinds.

“Air-dried whale meat is quite common and is considered a bit of a delicacy,” he notes.

It is usually eaten raw in thin slices. In his family, the blubber is eaten as a side, along with potatoes.

Speaking earlier this year, a spokesperson for the campaign group said:  “Over the course of the lengthy drive more and more members of the public and tourists could be seen stopping along the coastline to watch the family of pilot whales struggle and resist.

“As is often the case, the grind was swiftly becoming a social event with parents laughing and chatting as children played on the killing beach.

“The level of excitement was clearly growing as anticipation of the brutality came closer, epitomising the social aspect of the grind was the sight of a youth group – possibly a guides or scout group – sat eagerly watching and waiting.”

“Grind participants ran cheering into the pod to start attaching ropes and pulling individuals out to begin slaughtering.

They added:  “Though, as usual, the ‘humane’ process of killing the pilot whales was far from it, with multiple unsuccessful attempts to paralyse the with the lance were observed on a number of the pod.

“Having previously observed other pilot whale drives our crew noted that this pod had clearly been worn out or resigned to their fate as little to no cries were heard from the pod.

“As the family were laid out on the docks the all too familiar and disturbing images of children jumping on and playing with the dead could be seen.

In September 2018, the charity offered the Faroe Islands 1 million Euros for 10 consecutive years with no whale hunts but were rejected.

WAV Comment – Back around 1991 Jo, I and Trev were out on the streets campaigning about this slaughter – trying to get supermarkets to boycott fish from the Faroe Islands.  You can see us in the picture below.  Today, what some 30 years later, this blood lust is still going on.  As usual, the EU SAY NOTHING AT ALL about this – which just proves how crap they are.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-us/

Below – Myself, Joanne and Trev on the streets in 1991 campaigning about this.

Well to date there is no victory, but in the end the Danes will be ashamed about they are being portrayed the world over – then they will do something about it.  I just wish our actions in 91 had done something – a lot of beautiful, innocent whales have died ever since.
