(UK – Somerset) Investigation after dead cat found in bin bag

BBC News, West of England

An owner reportedly left a heavily-pregnant cat to die in a bin bag, an animal rescue centre has said.

Bosses at Little Paws Rescue, based in Clevedon, North Somerset, said an investigation has been launched after one of the “most horrific” incidents they have had to deal with.

They were called on Sunday after a member of the public found the dead cat on a popular walking route, called the 100 steps, in Hanham, South Gloucestershire.

Imogen Scofield, from Little Paws Rescue, said “heartbreakingly” the calico cat tried to claw her way out of the bag and went into labour after being dumped.

But due to the circumstances, none of the kittens survived, the animal charity said.

Ms Scofield continued: “It is the most upsetting thing we’ve had to witness, this poor cat didn’t deserve to suffer like she did.

“There is help out there and they could have contacted a rescue [centre] like ourselves who would have helped.”

Ms Scofield also confirmed the charity is asking people who live near the 100 steps to bring forward any CCTV from Sunday.

“The authorities are involved too, but we will do all we can to find out who did this,” she added.

They Abandoned a Pregnant Cat in a Trash Bag. Then, She Went Into Labour.

https://www.thepetitionsite.com/913/260/083/

A heart-wrenching and unimaginable act of cruelty has recently come to light in Hanham, South Gloucestershire. A heavily pregnant calico cat was abandoned in a plastic bin bag, left to die alone and in agony. Tragically, the cat went into labor before she passed, but none of her kittens survived. This poor animal suffered a horrific and unnecessary death – one that could have been easily avoided if the owner had sought the help and support that is readily available.

Sign this petition to urge local authorities to investigate this heartless act and to begin a public education campaign to inform the community about the options available to those with unwanted pets.

According to the organisation called to the scene, the cat attempted to claw her way out of the bag, desperate for life and a chance for her kittens. Sadly, her cries went unheard, and the kittens, who could have been saved, perished along with her.

This tragedy underscores the need for better public awareness. There are shelters and organizations that provide assistance to those in need, and no animal should ever suffer because of a lack of knowledge about these resources.

We need to ensure that people understand that they have options. No one should feel so desperate that they resort to abandoning a pet in this inhumane way. Sign this petition today to make sure that no more animals have to suffer like this again!

(Korea) Urgent help needed : Help Us Relocate ARK Shelter (Dog meat farm survivors)

posted by KoreanDogs.org team February 15,2025

For years, our shelter has been a safe haven for rescued dogs, giving them love, care, and a second chance. But now, Incheon has ordered us to leave, and time is running out. Click HERE to learn more.

ARK dogs have suffered so much. Many were trapped in tiny floating cages, starving and abused, waiting for a cruel fate – death. They never knew kindness—only fear and pain. We saved them, gave them warmth and care, and helped them start new lives. Now, they need a safe place to heal.

Our current facility is unsafe—overcrowded and falling apart. We found the perfect new location with more space and better conditions, but it comes at a high cost.

We need your help. Your donation will secure the new shelter, improve kennels, cover veterinary care, and transport our dogs safely. Every dollar counts.

By supporting us, you become a hero for these dogs. Whether donating or sharing our story, your help changes lives. These dogs deserve a future filled with love. Could you help us make this dream a reality? Please donate today and give them the home they’ve been waiting for.

(KOSOVO) STRAY DOG CRISIS IN KOSOVO: LET’S SUPPORT OUR MEMBER LEAGUE “Stray Angels Kosova Foundation”

https://www.oipa.org/international/stray-dog-crisis-kosovo/

Posted by oipainternational | Mar 11, 2025

Despite government programs, in Kosovo, in cities like Prishtina, stray populations have remained unchanged. Our member league Stray Angels Kosova Foundation reported to us cases of disappearing sterilized dogs and suspected underground culling. They need sustainable and humane solutions to manage stray dogs. With our support they can provide for vaccinations, sterilizations and adoption initiatives.

For years, independent rescuers and local groups have provided free services to their community, often lacking in funds themselves. Their initiatives include:

  1. Providing temporary shelter and medical care to vulnerable or injured animals.
  2. Facilitating adoptions and fostering: Coordinating with local fosters and adopters, completing vaccination and EU-required Titer tests, and organizing animal travel.
  3. Sterilizing and vaccinating dogs to prevent overpopulation and disease.
  4. Raising awareness: Educating communities about animal welfare, responsible pet ownership, and how to support stray dogs.
  5. De-escalating neighborhood complaints: Handling conflicts like threats to poison, relocate, or kill dogs.
  6. Supporting CNVR operations: Identifying pockets of unsterilized dogs and collaborating with veterinarians to address the issue.
  7. Establishing feeding points for sterilized strays as well as monitoring the health and situation of stray dogs, as well as their movements.

Stray Angels Kosova’s mission is to empower animal welfare organizations, rescuers, and volunteers to care for and protect stray animals across Kosovo. Especially, they provide:

  • Medical treatment and rehabilitation for injured or ill dogs;
  • Sterilization and vaccination programs;
  • Fostering and adoption initiatives;
  • Education and advocacy campaigns for communities.

To make a lasting impact, Stray Angels Kosova aims to:

  • Establish stable funding for rescuers and Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release (CNVR) programs;
  • Launch a nationwide education program to teach all age groups about responsible pet ownership and purchasing, sterilization, how to safely interact with stray animals, and ways to mitigate animal abandonment.

 (Sth. Korea) Rescued from Abandoned Pet Shop in Suwon: Animals Starved for 2 Weeks!

In a harrowing incident in Suwon, South Korea, on December 23rd, CARE received an urgent tip about over 50 dogs and cats that had been abandoned in a closed pet shop for more than six months. These animals had been left to starve for two weeks, with no intervention from local authorities despite numerous complaints from residents. Upon arriving at the scene, CARE found 32 cats and 10 dogs, severely malnourished and covered in feces, barely clinging to life. The heartbreaking sight of the animals, some of them so emaciated their bones protruded, underscored the urgent need for action. The shop owner, currently imprisoned for fraud, had abandoned the animals, and the local government failed to take immediate steps to rescue them.

After a tense standoff and following public pressure, all 42 animals were finally rescued by CARE. However, the journey doesn’t end there. Many of the animals are still receiving medical treatment, and the costs for their recovery are significant. Despite the rescue’s success, the failure of local authorities to act sooner serves as a stark reminder of the gaps in animal welfare enforcement.

This tragic event calls for immediate action to hold those responsible accountable. We demand that the City of Suwon launch a comprehensive investigation into the mishandling of this case, enforce stronger animal welfare regulations, and ensure such neglect never happens again. Join us in supporting these rescued animals by donating for their medical treatment and helping raise awareness. Your contribution can make a difference in giving these animals the chance they deserve at a healthy, safe life. Together, we can push for stricter oversight and work to prevent such cruelty from happening again in the future.

(CANADA) Couple arrested after horrific Torture and Killing of 10 cats

2 people arrested after 10 cats tortured, killed in ‘horrible’ animal cruelty case: Winnipeg police

Police believe some of the cats were bought through social media for torture videos posted to dark web

CBC News · Posted: Oct 11, 2024 12:43 PM EDT | Last Updated: October 12

WARNING: This story contains disturbing details.

A 40-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman have been arrested and charged with torturing and killing 10 cats, Winnipeg police say.

They allege the two posted videos and photos of animal torture content on the dark web, after some of the cats were bought through social media.

The content was viewed by a citizen and turned in to the provincial veterinarian, who sent the content to police in August 2024, police said at a news conference Friday. The animal torture content was posted online between May and August.

That led to an investigation during which a search warrant was executed in the Lord Roberts area of south Winnipeg. The two people were arrested and evidence was seized, police said at a Friday news conference.

Police said they found evidence of animal cruelty in the home, and located 10 cats and a rabbit during their investigation, but no animals found were alive.

“Investigators told me that this is the worst case that they’ve dealt with — a very, very horrible case involving animal cruelty,” Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Const. Stephen Spencer said.

He said that when people are involved in crimes against animals, that violent behaviour can escalate and involve humans, but there is currently no evidence to suggest intent to harm people in this case.

Spencer also said while police have received reports of cats being found dead in the Point Douglas area, it’s not believed at this point the two cases are related. The police service’s major crimes unit is still investigating the Point Douglas reports, as well as the Lord Roberts case, he said.

The two Winnipeggers who were arrested were known to police. They are in police custody and charged with:

  • Killing or injuring animals.
  • Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
  • Failing to provide adequate medical attention for an animal when it is wounded or ill.
  • Inflicting acute suffering, serious injury or harm upon an animal, or extreme anxiety or distress that significantly impairs its health or well-being.

Don’t support social media sellers: Humane Society

Andrew Clarke, director of investigation and emergency response for the Winnipeg Humane Society and a former police officer, says about two-thirds of the thousands of calls his department gets are related to some form of animal mistreatment or abuse, but that a case like this is very rare.

“It is disturbing,” Clarke said during an interview on CBC Radio’s Up to Speed. “These are serious charges that [police have] laid, and they obviously feel confident they got, unfortunately, the evidence to back them up.”

Clarke said that while the number of calls has remained consistent over the last couple years, animal removals in the city have gone up in 2024, adding that it might be in part due to people no longer being able to take care of their pets because of economic headwinds.

This case highlights why people should not support sellers advertising pets on social media, he said, urging prospective pet owners to instead visit reputable rescues in the city.

Winnipeg police said anyone with concerns about the welfare of animals can contact the provincial animal care line at 204-945-8000.

People can also contact the Winnipeg Police Service regarding criminal incidents involving animals, or make a report anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

Unfortunately what we see here is all too familiar – we’ve seen it before in China, and the “Cat Torture Ring” here discussed also (please search for “Cat Torture Ring” on this site). And it is as we feared – “inspiration” has clearly been taken from that example, and is spreading globally.

With the only difference in this case, that people have been arrested on charges, and will be taken to court and sentenced. With China, we are a long way away from that.
