A million mink culled in Netherlands and Spain amid Covid-19 fur farming havoc

Agriculture minister says origins of outbreak unclear after seven farm workers – and 87% of the mink – test positive

Spain has ordered the culling of nearly 100,000 mink on a farm and an estimated one million mink have already been culled on Dutch fur farms, as coronavirus wreaks havoc in the European fur farming industry.

Joaquin Olona, agriculture minister for the north-eastern Aragon region, said the cull would involve the slaughter of 92,700 mink which are prized for their pelts.

Officials suspect the virus first reached the farm through a worker who passed it on to the animals. But Olona said it was not completely clear if “transmission was possible from animals to humans and vice versa”.

Covid-19 infections are now reported to have spread to 24 Dutch fur farms, a fur industry source confirmed. A further outbreak reported on Friday, bringing the number to 25, appears related to a planned movement of mink pups to another location. Scientists believe the initial Covid-19 infections passed from two farm workers to the mink in April. Culling began shortly afterwards.

The Netherlands is the world’s fourth biggest fur farmer after China, Denmark and Poland. Spain is the seventh largest European producer.

In Denmark, Covid-19 has been confirmed on three mink farms.

The Spanish mink farm – in Puebla de Valverde, about 100km (60 miles) north-west of the coastal resort of Valencia – has been carefully monitored since 22 May after seven workers tested positive for Covid-19, Olona said.

Since then no animals have left the property, which is the only mink farm in Aragon.

Officials had carried out a string of tests which on 13 July showed that 87% of the mink were infected, prompting the decision to carry out a cull “to avoid the risk of human transmission”, Olona said.

Dutch mink farming is due to be phased out by 2024 but there are calls for closures to speed up. The Dutch parliament adopted a motion last month from the Dutch Party for the Animals calling for faster shutdowns.

On Thursday, Humane Society International (HSI), the animal welfare NGO that collected the Dutch cull data, said Covid-19 infection risks, and the conditions in which mink are bred, meant more immediate action to end fur farming was needed.

Fur farms can potentially act as “reservoirs for coronaviruses, incubating pathogens transmissible to humans” and are “inherently cruel”, HSI Europe’s public affairs director, Joanna Swabe, said.

Mink are culled in the same way they are killed for fur, using carbon monoxide and dioxide gas. Culled fur does not enter the retail chain.  Swabe said gassing is a particularly cruel way to kill mink because they are semi-aquatic animals able to hold their breath for long periods. Recent Dutch video footage appears to show a mink that survived gassing being fished out of a container to be gassed again, she said.

Prior to the pandemic, HSI said its data showed fur farming was in decline globally, mainly due to falling demand and bans on the practice.

Data from leading Finnish fur auctioneer, Saga Furs, shows that at this year’s latest auction, which started on 29 June and ended last week, 4.9 million mink pelts were offered along with 900,000 long hair pelts from foxes and finnraccoons, but only about a fifth sold. Magnus Ljung, Saga Furs CEO, estimates the auction raised about £33m, and would have been worth £200m if all the skins had sold.

Ljung told the Guardian on Friday, however, that sales were picking up again as international borders reopen, particularly to China, and orders for next week now stand at about £5m.

press release this month from Saga Furs said “changes in consumer demand caused by the global coronavirus pandemic had [had] a significant impact on the company’s business during the current period”. Ljung stated that auctioneers “firmly believe” in future demand for responsibly produced fur and that “organisational changes” being made now “will help us to operate more efficiently … [and] take us beyond this crisis phase.”

A number of countries have already banned fur farming including the UK (in 2000), Austria and Croatia. Slovakia, Norway and Belgium are phasing it out, like the Netherlands, and bans are under consideration in Ireland, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Ukraine and Estonia.

Major fashion brands, meanwhile, are going fur free. The most recent announcement came from the Prada Group in 2019. Jean Paul Gaultier went fur free in 2018, but said more recently that he might return if traceability improved. Other fur-free fashion houses include Michael Kors, Gucci, Armani and Hugo Boss.

Mette Lykke Nielsen, CEO of Fur Europe, hopes the issues can be resolved. “We know that it was people infected with Covid-19 that brought the virus into the farms in the Netherlands, Denmark and Spain [so] we believe that good biosecurity is the answer to prevent virus from entering farms again.”

Nielsen hopes that because fur is long-lasting and fully biodegradable, unlike many fast fashion items that risk ending up in landfill, the pandemic might boost fur demand. She pointed out that 100,000 people across Europe work in the fur sector, which supports farmers, dressing and dyeing companies, furriers and retail outlets.

Laura Moreno Ruiz, a WWF biodiversity officer, said Spain now has only 38 fur farms in the country, mostly in the northern region of Galicia, down from more than 300 in the 1980s. “The species is listed as an invasive alien species since 2011,” she said.

China risking new pandemic even more deadly than COVID as hotbed for new viruses exposed

CHINESE factory farming is creating the perfect environment for “the mutation and amplification of new viruses” and unless conditions improve “this pandemic will not be the last one”, a leading scientist has warned.

Global Head of Research and Animal Welfare for Animals in Farming Kate Blaszak described the growth of intensive farming units not just in China but across the world and pointed to them as having the potential to both increase antibiotic resistance and create a deadlier pathogen than COVID-19. Speaking to Express.co.uk Ms Blaszak said: “China is incubating two new strains of bird flu. It is also dealing with an outbreak of swine flu, which is a mixture of human, pig, and avian influenza viruses.

“These different viruses mixed together to form a very potent pathogen.

“The current swine flu virus that has broken out in China has the potential to bind very successfully in the human throat and respiratory system.”

The veterinary scientist said in the last ten to 15 years China has seen a vast and rapid shift away from traditional farming practices and is now emulating the US model of high-intensity farming were animals are kept in dark, confined environments.

Ms Blaszak described the new factory farming system in China as lacking regulations and operating with very poor animal welfare principles.

A duck farm in China

A duck farm in China (Image: GETTY)

The hundreds of millions of animals contained within the new factory systems are under so much stress that is lowering their immune systems making them need constant feeds of antibiotics to stay healthy and alive.

Ms Blaszak said: “These kinds of low welfare environments lower animals immunities and allows viruses to propagate.

“They create the perfect scenario for the mixing of viruses and the mutation and amplification of viruses.”

She added waste from farms, the movement of large amounts of animals and the processing of animals are also a risk to humans.

The scientist warned of the high risk of animal to human infections from having live animals at wet markets.

A chicken farm in China

A chicken farm in China (Image: GETTY)

The cause for concern in China is the fact that it is moving towards a US model of intensified meat production, where the majority of animals are factory farmed.

China is the biggest pig producer in the world and the second-biggest chicken producer in the world.

Ms Blaszak describes how the high numbers of high density, genetically uniform animals are the perfect conditions for another virus to propagate that could potentially jump to humans.

The animals that are genetically uniform and crammed side by side need yearly inoculations to protect them against the ravages of quickly mutating viruses.

It takes a long time and considerable expense to develop vaccines for the new viruses being formed, and when a vaccine comes out it is not long before it must be changed because of the rapid mutation of these influenza viruses.

Furthermore, because 75 percent of antibiotics are used in the rearing of farm animals there is the added risk of creating extremely resistant bacteria.

Much of these antibiotics are used to promote growth rather than cure illness.

Ms Blaszak said: “Without huge amounts of anti-biotics a lot of animals would be unwell and die and these intensified farming systems would not work.

A pig factory in China

A pig ‘factory’ in China

“So, antibiotics just prop up the system for the next pandemic.”

However, Ms Blaszak said: “To be fair China is banning the use of antibiotics in animal food and water at the end of 2020.”

Since 2018 African swine flu, which originated in factory farms in Mexico, has wiped out the vast majority of smallholder pig farmers in China.

This then accelerated the intensity of farming practices in china.

Ms Blaszak stated the need to improve the welfare standard of animals and move away from a factory farming system, “so we can take the pressure off meat production by reducing the consumption of meat”.

She added: “We need to do this otherwise this pandemic will not be the last one.”

Since 2016 China has made some significant polices in moving away from overt meat consumption and improving food sustainability in the country.

Ms Blaszak added that the whole world should rethink their consumption of meat.

She said: “The world should move away from intensive farming systems and improve the welfare standards of animals.

“There should be a reduction in the consumption of meat.”

Kate Blaszak works for World Animal Protection and is World Animal Protection’s Global Head of Research and Animal Welfare for Farmed Animals.

Dear Mark,

Two of the happiest dogs alive, Rocky and Ranis video below is a heart-warming look at the lives of two orphaned puppies whose mama died in childbirth. Nurtured and adored by foster parents, they survived dangerous viruses, which orphans like these are especially vulnerable to because they’re too young to vaccinate and don’t have the natural protective immunity that comes only with their mother’s milk (cow’s milk does not provide this, and can be harmful for puppies and species other than cows.)

When they were old enough to eat on their own, they were adopted by a tremendous village family with children, elderly neighbors and a steady stream of friends.

Wherever you are in the world, when it’s time to bring a new best friend into your home, adopt a rescued dog from a shelter. Or better yet, two!

Joy’s extraordinary recovery after her lower lip was terribly injured

When we got the call that a puppy was covered in blood we had no idea how bad it could be. Her entire lip was missing. As soon as we examined her we realized that she would need urgent surgery but we didn’t know if she could fully recover from such a horrible injury.

We’ve called this little hero Joy.

And Joy is alive and well and–extraordinary. Please donate

Tiggy’s ravaging wounds and astoundingly FAST recovery

Multiple wounds tore open Tiggy’s neck, shoulders and ear. We rescued him as he sat trembling and woozy with pain. We hurriedly gave the beautiful little victim pain medicine, hydration, bandaging and food, but the best part of his rescue was holding him close. Within days, Tiggy’s incredibly playfulness and boundless affection took over.

There’s nothing better than a happy ending. Please donate

Puppy love! There’s simply nothin’ like it!

Rocky and Rani were orphaned when their poor mama died in childbirth. The sweethearts were immediately fostered by two devoted Animal Aid staff who cheerfully went through the midnight feedings stage, the “is this poop looking normal to you?” stage, and then to the fantastic open-road of their great health and multiple growth spurts.

With glossy coats, bright white smiles and absolute trust of humans, this pair was lovingly adopted by Animal Aid care-giver Mangi bai and her family, and their growing up has continued with play, love, and then more play.

Life should be, at times, hilarious.

Wherever you live, adopt a shelter dog. And if you live in India, click here to meet the beautiful dogs ready for adoption at Animal Aid.

As Barbara and 80 other sheep were being herded across a highway by an old shepherd in 2017, a truck rounded a blind corner and slammed into them, killing all but 8 souls. Barbara was one of the survivors. Badly injured with an open fracture, the shepherd could no longer care for her and brought her to Animal Aid. Shy and frightened at first, Barbara has blossomed into one of the world’s biggest sweethearts and if you sponsor Barbara, we think you’ll feel her magic. She’s way too big to curl up in your lap, but she tries to!

Dr. Medicine Slavica Mazak Bešlić – A Dear Animal Campaigner Friend Lost Today.

Today, 17/7/20 I have been sent a very sad message from friends and welfare people, Branka and Pavel, who operate ARKA in Serbia.  The message reads:

Dear Mark,

We are so sorry to inform you that Slavica (EPAR) died Yesterday morning at 3h30’.

Recently, apart of her main illness, she fell and broke thigh bone. She had to go to the hospital for the surgery, unfortunately she didn’t recover.

She really loved animals and did so much for them, we’ll miss her very much.

Regards, Branka and Pavel

Slavica first made contact with me back in 2004; and after deciding on a campaign route; ‘Serbian Animals Voice’ was formed.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-us/

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-serbian-animals/

Slavica and I were in almost daily contact re the situation for animals in Serbia.  She was in Serbia; and I was in England; so communication (language) to get the correct message out on SAV was not an easy thing in those early days.  It was very much a case of info coming in check – draft and send to Slavica for the ok.  Only once that we were both happy with the content did we publish our data.

Two very large campaigns we worked on was to try and prevent the construction of a ski lift facility at Stara Planina – here are some links:

This was not about stray animals, but an environmental issue we fought:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2009/08/15/serbia-campaign-to-save-flora-and-fauna-at-stara-planina/

We battled with the EU about environmental issues at Stara; again, they did not want to take action regarding the endangered species (wildlife) lists we had provided.

In the end it was not good news – corruption won; but we did help with some other victories:

serb sheep 3

Another issue we very much got involved with was regarding the export of live sheep to Israel.  The Serbian government denied that there was any involvement with Serbia and the exported sheep; so much so that attempted to make threats against all who were involved and exposing the business.  With help and advice and input from Salavica, I chased up the issue at the EU – see more here:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2015/09/21/england-sav-now-write-to-eu-commissioner-hahn-regarding-serbia-israeli-live-animal-transport/

You have to remember that the Serbian government made many threats to animal activists; and that included closing down Slavica’s stray dog shelter.  But all was not lost, in the end the Serbian government were forced (under activists pressure) to come clean and tell the EU that the exported sheep DID originate and get exported from Serbia.  This was confirmed in a letter from the EU to Mark, which you can read below:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2015/10/20/serbia-it-now-appears-the-sheep-exported-live-to-israel-were-from-serbia-despite-the-threats/

So you see, if you know you are right with what you say, you have to take chances and fight the fight; all the way.  This issue of sheep exports was a big win for us; especially Slavica, who was so very involved, despite the government threats to close down her shelter.

We also worked together re the animals at Palic Zoo in Serbia; and especially relating to a brown bear which was kept in a very confined environment.  Here we worked with the Born Free group in London who had set up reports on animal zoos across the EU.  See it here:

Slavica was a fantastic person to know; and an even better campaigner.  I am proud to have been able to call her a good friend and to have been involved with her fighting to improve the welfare of animals in Serbia..  As well as her dedication to animals rights, Slavica was also a medical doctor.  Slavica worked as the senior / manager of the department for tumours at the city hospital in Subotica (Serbia) for over 15 years.

She undertook numerous operations associated with tumours in gynecology, such as the Wertheim – Meigs technique.

She operated her own private gynecology facility known as “Ginekos”, within Subotica city, Serbia.

Slavica has always supported animal welfare / rights and allocated the vast majority of the finances from her gynecology speciality into funding the construction and operations of stray dog and cat shelters, and she often had to endure personal attack, criticism and negative experiences from many of the local authorities around the Subotica area.

Slavica endured personal criticism of her work for the animals by others working within administration departments of Belgrade City authority.

With massive input from Slavica; and using SAV as an information tool; we also managed to get the illegal hell hole (VUK) zoo at Novi Pazar closed down.  You can see the conditions in which the animals were illegally kept in the following:

Slavica is the President of the organisation EPAR, which is based in Subotica, Serbia.  In 2010, Slavica stopped running the animal shelter part of EPAR, which was called Friend – EPAR.  The animal shelter section of EPAR has now been taken over by a lady named Adriana.  Friend – EPAR shelter was the biggest No Kill shelter in Serbia; and this policy is now continuing through Adriana.

Adriana has now given a new name to the shelter that she works with; the old Friend – EPAR shelter.  This shelter is now called (shelter) ALEX.

Slavica continues to run EPAR as an organisation, but this is now specifically dedicated to more legal matters such as campaigning for the implementation of existing national legislation; bringing charges against those who are illegally doing cruelty to animals, and charges against hunters, environmental destruction work etc.

Important – the links below show many photographs of the old Friend – EPAR shelter.

Here below are some old photograph links to what was originally Friend – EPAR shelter, and which is now called ALEX:

Slavica is a medical doctor with specialist practice in gynecology and obstetrics, and a superspecialist for untrasound techniques in gynecology.

Slavica worked as the senior / manager of the department for tumors at the city hospital in Subotica (Serbia) for over 15 years.

She has undertaken numerous operations associated with tumors in gynecology, such as the Wertheim – Meigs technique.

She now operates her own private gynecology facility known as “Ginekos”, still within Subotica city.

Slavica has always supported animal welfare / rights. She allocates the vast majority of the finances from her gynecology speciality into funding the construction and operations of stray dog and cat shelters, and has often had to endure personal attack, criticism and negative experiences from many of the local authorities around the Subotica area.

Slavica has endured personal criticism of her work for the animals by others working within administration departments of Belgrade City authority.

Slavica shares her home with animals that she has rescued from the local streets as strays.

Slavica was a great personal friend and an even better campaigner friend for all the animals.  She lived her life to the full in so many ways and tried to make Serbia a better place for animals.

I close by saying if there were a lot more ‘Slavica’s’ in the world, then it would be a much better place.

Chicken barracks: suffering, dirt, and death

July 15, 2020

In Germany, up to 50 million male chicks are killed each year on the first day of their lives because they are not profitable for the egg industry. They cannot lay eggs and they put on meat much more slowly and less than chickens that are specially bred for meat production.

kücken am fließband
These so-called ones– day-old chicks are mostly suffocated by gas or shredded alive.
Germany and France aim to phase out this practice by the end of 2021.

Until then, new technologies for sex determination in the egg should be available (in-ovo sex determination).

In order to increase the pressure on international politics and to end the cruel chick killing as widely as possible, our colleagues from Animal Equality in Italy, Spain, and Brazil have now started a campaign.
The aim is to convince the respective governments of the countries to set a good example, to find alternatives, and to subsidize them financially.

kücken default

There are already different approaches for alternatives to chick killing. A basic distinction is made between three alternatives:

the above-mentioned gender determination in the egg,
the rearing of male chicks for meat production (broiler fattening mast) and
the breeding of so-called dual-use breeds.
Both the fattening of the rooster cocks and the “dual-use chicken” are already practiced to a certain extent, especially by organic farms.

However, only every tenth egg in Germany comes from organic farming and not all of these farms do without killing the male chicks. The percentage of eggs for which no male chick was killed is therefore negligible.

Kücken 3 default

Buying eggs support not only financially the cruel killing of male chicks. The female chicks also suffer almost unimaginable torments.

Huhn an blutiger Wandjpg
As so-called laying hens, they are used for the production of eggs. With a laying performance of around 300 eggs per year, they have to achieve completely unnatural high performance.

Therefore, the most effective way to reduce the suffering of all chicks is by eating a plant.

We can all make a conscious decision against animal agony and remove eggs from our menu. Try it!

the petition from Germany: https://animalequality.de/kampagnen/horror-ei

And I mean…The walls have long been made of glass. An enormous number of undercover investigations have created this transparency, which is even broadcast by the public media.
But meat consumption is increasing.
Worldwide meat consumption has quintupled in the past 50 years.

Germany is not only one of the largest meat producers, but also one of the largest milk producers worldwide. Subsidized with tax money!

Germany produces 8 million tons of meat every year!
While in the Third World and according to UN statistics, 43,000 children die of hunger every day. Per day!
Why?
Because the West feeds its “useful” animals with the grain.

All of this is already known, and at some level, we know the truth.
But as soon as we recognize this reality and recognize our meat consumption as the main cause of animal suffering and the climate catastrophe, we have to take responsibility and radically change our actions.
But that’s exactly what we don’t want to do.

In this sense, this fascist system of the meat and milk mafia has done an excellent indoctrination work and made 7 billion human specimens its collaborators.

A breaking PETA undercover investigation into a typical American egg farm that supplies eggs to Walmart—which sells them under its “Great Value” brand—reveals that more than 100,000 hens were yanked out of their cages and crudely gassed.

Workers tried but failed to break other hens’ necks—causing them a prolonged, agonizing death.

Hundreds more hens suffered and died in their cages. PETA’s investigator found that many of them were simply left to decay. The surviving hens were crowded together with these rotting corpses for days on end.

Hens had no place to stand, sit, or lie down except on the wire flooring of their cages, which dug into their feet.

You can make a tremendous difference today for the millions of intelligent, gentle hens who are suffering so severely right now at this Walmart supplier’s farm.

We can bring these and billions of other hens closer to a day free of unrelenting stress, fear, misery, and agony. Please, take a minute to lend your powerful voice in defense of these animals.

Thank you for all that you do for animals.

England: Investigator Friend Richard Helps Viva ! With Expose of Animal Cruelty; and a New Book.

England

Mark (WAV) and Richard (Rich) worked together on live animal transport issues a long time ago; and they were good friends for years – Richard is one smashing bloke and a true friend of the animals !.  You can see a photo here taken by Mark of Richard (on the right) at the EU HQ in Brussels during a protest against live transport organised, what 20-25 years ago.

Mark remembers; the last time Rich and I met up was at Dover docks here in Kent, England.  Of all times and places;  it was about 0300 hrs and I was at the harbour myself doing live calf and sheep export work; as many UK calves were heading to the Netherlands for crating; which is a terr8ible process. .   He had arrived at the port to catch a ferry across the (English) Channel to do some work in Belgium I think it was.  We came across each other and had a quick chat about export issues and other things before we shook hands and he departed into the darkness to catch the ferry.  I remained at the docks for loaded transporters to arrive; again to catch the ferry.  Sad work, but when you meet people like him; it kind of gets better – Mark.

As you can see below – there are a lot of trucks to keep an eye on.  Fortunately; Dover is not used now for animal exports – it was a major victory for us to stop it.

Here you can see a crated calf ; that’s why we fight for them:

Relying on a hidden camera, a bluff and a little bit of luck, award-winning investigative journalist Rich Hardy finds imaginative ways to meet the people and industries responsible for the lives and deaths of billions of animals used to feed, clothe and entertain us.

RICH HARDY

Undercover investigator has exposed some of the most heinous examples of animal abuse around the world for nearly 20 years.

Rich’s pictures and video footage from inside places such as abattoirs, factories, circuses and livestock markets have been used worldwide by more than 20 international animal protection charities, helping to launch campaigns, change laws and inspire people to take action for animals.

He has documented animal suffering in 28 countries, providing organisations with key evidence to push for new welfare laws, pursue animal cruelty prosecutions or raise public awareness about the need to treat animals with kindness and respect.

His many assignments have included infiltrating fur trappers in the USA and monkey breeding farms in Asia, as well as undercover investigations into the meat industry, live exports, ritual slaughter of sheep in Singapore, and the horrific battery farming of rabbits for use in pet food sold in Britain.

The former leader of Surfers Against Sewage has worked with charities including Compassion in World Farming, Born Free, Humane Society International, Eurogroup for Animals, Cruelty Free International, Four Paws and World Animal Protection.

Although his work has been widely featured in campaigns and news outlets, he has always remained anonymous to allow him to continue working undercover. His identity can now be revealed as he is giving up undercover work to focus on activism and campaigning.

Now working with the Veganuary campaign, he also runs a micro-sanctuary for dogs, cats, chickens and ducks he and his partner have rescued from shelters and factory farms.

There is no human right to profit through torturing and murdering others.

“New footage was taken by Glass Walls operatives last weekend, but we bet you have seen this all before.  It’s because the same breeding practices are used everywhere in the world and all nations are equally responsible”.

And I mean…No animal in this world deserves to live like this. Factory farming is nothing more than organized crime, a legalized crime.
They are simply the criminals, the meat industry and their clients, the meat-eaters.

Most people are shocked when they see pictures from animal barracks and reject factory farming.
Nevertheless, the conditions are tolerated.
The media participate; that covers corrupt politicians and the meat industry because that’s an unpopular issue that shames so many people who consume animal meat.

Even so, most people eat meat and other animal products who made in exactly these facilities with this suffering.
Law philosopher Gary Francione called this moral schizophrenia.

What is meant is that our beliefs and our behavior contradict each other.

But after all, everyone serves this system with his consumption.
It is the system of maximum financial gain through the maximal legalized exploitation of defenseless.
No more and no less.

My best regards to all, Venus
