The New Jersey Assembly approved “Nosey’s Law” by a landslide 71-3 vote this week. If the bill is approved by Governor Phil Murphy, New Jersey will become the first state in the US to ban the use of all exotic animals in traveling acts.

Sponsored by Assemblymen Raj Mukerji, Andrew Zwicker and Jamel Holley, “Nosey’s Law” was named in honor of an elephant named Nosey who spent decades chained up, abused, sick and suffering as she traveled around the US in the name of entertainment.

Thanks to a 14-year battle by animal activists, Nosey is now enjoying life in a sanctuary, after undeniable evidence was produced showing her abuse and neglect at the hands of her “guardian” — including a number of painful, chronic infections, crippling arthritis, skin problems and more.

While Nosey’s heartbreaking story was the inspiration for this bill, the sponsors want to ensure that all exotic animals — not just elephants — are protected from lives of suffering in captivity.

“These are wild, endangered animals, and they should be cared for according to the highest ethical standards to ensure the survival of their species,” said Mukerji. “We cannot allow ill-equipped handlers of traveling animal acts to mistreat and exploit endangered species.”

The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) praised the Assembly’s decision, describing the horrific conditions that circus animals are forced to endure.

“The elephants, tigers, monkeys and other wild animals used in performances are deprived of nearly everything that is important to them,” said Cathy Liss, president of AWI. “They are confined to small cages, denied the opportunity to meet their physical and social needs, and subjected to endless hours in transit. Unlike human entertainers, exotic animals do not choose to join the circus, and should not be forced to endure these abusive conditions.”

The use of elephants in traveling shows is banned in certain areas of the US such as New York and Illinois, and there is a variety of different legislation throughout municipalities addressing the abuse of circus animals. However, very little action has been taken on a wider scale, until now.

“Increasingly, the tide of public opinion is turning against the archaic and outdated practice of using exotic animals in circuses,” said Liss. “New Jersey has the opportunity to establish itself as a leader on this issue, and set a strong example for other states to follow. We urge Governor Murphy to take the last step needed to put New Jersey in the forefront of efforts to end the abuse of exotic animals in traveling shows.”

And On The Theme of Animals Rescuing Others – Pigs Return Stranded Fish To The Water.

When this family of pigs noticed a fish stranded on the shoreline, they sprung into action and worked together to return the animal back to the water.

Although it seems surprising that the pigs somehow knew exactly what to do to help the fish, it probably comes as no shock to the animals’ biggest fans. Pigs are highly intelligent and social beings and have reportedly saved countless humans and other animals from danger, including fires, drowning, and intruders. They’re also known for their compassion – when a pig notices another creature suffering, it tends to start exhibiting signs of distress. It’s no wonder, then, that they’re also quick to step in and help any way they can!

This video is just one example of these amazing animals engaging in a heroic act.

Release Winter 2018:
https://issuu.com/freedomforanimals/docs/release_winter_2018

Dear Mark,

I love writing your Release newsletter. It always delights me when I see the fantastic progress you are making for animals.

From the Welsh Government announcing it will ban wild animal circuses; to SEA LIFE finally bowing to pressure and retiring the beluga whales to a sanctuary… you have made all of this possible!

Read Release here: www.freedomforanimals.org.uk/release-newsletter

It has been over six months since we changed the name and look of our organisation from ‘Captive Animals’ Protection Society’ to ‘Freedom for Animals’. And I hope you can see that we are still fighting for animals and still making a difference in the same way.

Making a difference for animals like Little White and Little Grey, the beluga whales who now, thanks to you, will no longer be exploited in cruel shows and will instead make it back to the ocean where they belong.

Wow! A huge, multinational company has bowed to pressure from YOU and other animal advocates. This doesn’t happen every day!

With your help, we launched our Shine a Light campaign this year. To be able to tell the complex and always sad stories of the animals we are all fighting to free.

And I am delighted to say that it is starting to make a difference. We have been out at events with the campaign cards and have found that people are really touched by the stories as they start to see the suffering behind these industries.

Finally I am excited to share a brand new way that you can help animals: by becoming a Freedom Champion! By setting up a monthly gift to animals, you can ensure we can plan ahead and always be there for animals in the future.

So, check out your copy of Release. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Thank you again.

Best wishes,

Nicola O’Brien

Campaigns Director

P.S. Thank you so much for another fantastic few months of action for animals.

Your actions are seeing results that the animals so desperately need.

Hunt enemies destroy high seats and hang up brand letters

In the district of Schwandorf (Bavarian), radical hunting opponents hang out threatening letters against hunters for weeks. Six high seats have now been destroyed in the area.

Hochsitz zerstört jpg

Torn up high seats, damage in four-figure height, leaflets on the trees – in the district of Schwandorf (Bavaria) again radical hunting opponents are up to mischief. Six pulpits have destroyed unknown persons in one night in the area of Maximilian Freiherr von Wiedersperg at the end of October. Presumably with a vehicle as a tractor, the seats were torn from their anchorages and overturned.

Brand letters: “Animal Killer”

Several weeks earlier, more than 20 leaflets were stacked on tree-lined footpaths in the area where hunters were labeled as “murderers” and “brutal animal abusers.” The destroyed high seats are not the first property damage to Revier facilities in the area. As early as 2014 unknown people sawed tall ladders and posts. In May last year even a residence was blown up. The baron (!!!), however, does not start from targeted actions against him. Damages were also reported from other areas, the injured party told the editors.

The police secured traces, but the evaluation would take some time, so a spokesman told the editors. The police asks for information from the population.

Aha… First of all, one thing must be clear:
For 80 years, the nobility in Germany has officially been abolished. Since then, aristocratic associations have worked to ensure that nobody notices it.
But the activists have already noticed it!
And reminded the hunter (without “baron”) that wrong titles and wrong seats have to be taken out of circulation.

My best regards, Venus

USA: Fashion Label ‘Coach’ Is To Go Fur Free During 2019.

Coach Has Finally Gone Fur-Free!

Posted by Carly Day | October 31, 2018

New York-based fashion label Coach is joining the avalanche of brands who are taking a stand against fur, with a plan to phase it out in the short term before a complete ban by fall 2019.

The label, under the direction of chief executive Joshua Schulman, said that they made this humane decision based upon feedback from employees and shoppers who oppose the use of fur.

“We understood from our employee population and from our consumers that it was important to them that we take a stand on this issue,” said Schulman. “We’re doing it because we believe it’s the right thing to do.”

Although the ban will see Coach stop using furs such as mink, coyote, fox and rabbit, they will continue to use other animal products like mohair and angora — as well as leather.

Coach teamed up with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to discuss the move before the announcement, and the organization helped educate key senior executives about the cruel fur industry.

“The announcement from a brand as iconic as Coach is the latest indication that fur is just not fashionable,” said Kitty Block, CEO and president of The Humane Society. “Consumers worldwide are saying no and fashion leaders are following.”

The anti-fur movement has had some big wins this year. Notably, Los Angeles voted in favor of a ban on the manufacture and sale of fur last month, which will see it become the largest city in the world to go fur-free. Prior to that victory, in March this year, San Francisco joined West Hollywood and Berkeley in voting to enact legislation banning the sale of fur.

A slew of fashion labels over the last few years have made similar pledges, including Burberry, Gucci, Armani, Stella McCartney, and Vivienne Westwood, along with many more.

Even iconic fashion magazine InStyle has banned the promotion of any products that use fur — both within its photo spreads and advertising materials.

“The fur trade kills more than 100 million animals each year, with animals used for fur either trapped in the wild, where they remain in cruel leghold traps for days without food or water, or raised in cramped cages for their entire lives and then killed by electrocution or gassing,” said Block.

The tide is well and truly turning for the barbaric fur industry, and before long, those who continue to use it will be in the minority. We hope that continued decisions like this spell the end for the practice, consigning it to the history books forever.

Indonesia: save humanity’s new cousin!

This is wild! Scientists just announced there’s a new species of orangutan that we never knew existed before… and they need our help.

They’re called Tapanuli orangutans and they have their own distinct genes and features. But there’s only 800 of them left — and a new dam project is about to rip through their forest in Indonesia.

But there’s still hope: the scientific announcement has made headlines, and investors are backing away from the project. Let’s end it once and for all by getting the Indonesian government to stop all industrial projects in the Tapanuli’s home land!

UK: A third of Britons have stopped or reduced eating meat in the last five years, new survey reveals. ‘Animal Welfare Concerns’ Cited As The Main Reason.

UNKG0001

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/world-vegan-day-vegetarian-diet-plant-based-meat-health-waitrose-survey-a8611981.html

A third of Britons have stopped or reduced eating meat in the last five years, a new survey has found.

The research, conducted by Waitrose, reveals a huge shift in the UK’s eating habits and also revealed that one in eight people now follow either a vegan or vegetarian diet.

Released on World Vegan Day, the supermarket’s report comes just one day after the former editor of Waitrose Food magazine, William Sitwell, resigned after he joked about publishing a series of articles on “killing vegans”.

The annual food and drink survey is based on OnePoll consumer research of 2,000 people across Britain, not just those who shop in Waitrose, and is supported by data from focus groups and purchases made in Waitrose shops and online.

In addition to the increasing prevalence of vegan and vegetarianism, the report also reveals a surge in flexitarianism, also known as semi-vegetarianism, whereby someone eats meat or fish only occasionally; according to the findings, 21 per cent of Brits now follow this diet.

“Being mindful of how we live and eat has become a priority in today’s world,” comments Rob Collins, managing director at Waitrose.

“As we become increasingly mindful of our own health, the wellbeing of our family and that of the planet, we’re reshaping how we shop, cook and eat. Welcome to the era of the mindful consumer.”

The Vegan Society claims that the number of vegans quadrupled between 2014 and 2018.

According to Waitrose’s report, the most common reason for the surge is concerns over animal welfare, with 55 per cent of respondents citing this at their motivation.

Meanwhile, 45 per cent said they became vegan or vegetarian because they thought it was healthier while 38 per cent made the change out of “environmental concerns” – participants could choose more than one option.

The rising number of people shunning meat and dairy products from their diets was also evident in the items listen in the report’s most popular foods, which include miso, kefir and jackfruit – a popular meat substitute.

According to Collins, the findings reflect a “consumer revolution”.

WAV Comment – 55% citing ‘animal welfare’ as their motivation for dropping meat – maybe our posts are getting the message through to folk.

Brilliant news on what is a sad day otherwise.
