Dear Mark,

Our most recent video includes a beautiful reunion of a puppy, almost blinded by maggots, with his whole family–several tail-waggers and a human neighbour who, you’ll see, all love the sweetheart we named Tinker

Sometimes people wish all our patients could live forever in Animal Aid. But not only are the number of street animals in India so vast that it’s only possible for us to keep a very select few in our sanctuary, but street animals in India often have caring friends. Many people leave food and clean water out for the dogs and passing cows, and many animals we rescue are–apart from their wounds or their illness–healthy. And they’re often psychologically healthy too–mentally agile in contrast to the dogs whose whole world is inside a house, whose only time outdoors is on a leash. Tinker’s problem was just awful, but with our rescue team ready to help in his time of need, he is back with his loving family. Your help made you part of his family too, in the gift of your understanding that we’re all in this world together. You relieve their pain, you share their burdens, and when they’re happy, you’re happy too.

Puppy nearly blinded rescued–watch til the end

Tinker wasn’t even a month old when he emerged for the first time from his nest in the bushes and neighbors saw that his eyes were stuck together oozing pus and blood. To our horror we saw the signs of maggots. In the hot season, maggots can cause irreparable damage in even just one day. Watch the amazing rescue of this brave boy, and see his life light up again. Kindness can open up a world: Please donate today.

Whisper survived a terrible brain injury, but meet her now!

Seeing this girl collapsed in a pool of blood, it was hard to believe she was even alive. Fluid bubbling out of her nose, her rescuers scooped her up and rushed her back to our hospital where we immediately began treating her for brain trauma. Her whimpering was heartbreaking, and it took days for her to begin eating on her own. Walking again took even longer. But patiently helping this sweetheart was easy because in her quiet way, her efforts were courageous. Meet Whisper today.

On the road to recovery, every step is precious. Please donate.

Lottie’s skin was red and raw; watch dying dog’s happiness after healing

Hiding in terror, her hairless body bright red and raw from tearing at the inescapable itching that covered every inch of her, this brave spirit was close to death. As soon as she saw her rescuers, she darted away, and we chased her with full heart for an hour, because we knew if we didn’t manage to catch her, she would surely die. But we got her! and so began her 3 month long journey to health and the most

playful new chapter in her life.

Your gift can save someone lovely. Please donate.

Celebrate the care-givers: Shankar

shankar

Our surgical team includes a surgeon of course, an anaesthesia nurse–and Shankar Rana who prepares dogs for surgery and monitors their vital signs post-op. He’s been with us for 8 years and can recognize if a dog scheduled for sterilization might be suddenly less energetic than normal and surgery should be postponed, or if a dog is slow to recover from anaesthesia. He sees animals’ whole auras. It’s easy to spot a wound that is healed or not; but is an animal feeling good? Is she feeling low? We know many animals who are alive today because Shankar spotted a problem early. That takes real talent, and we’re grateful to Shankar for using his talent with so much love.

South Korea is not an exception from the growing global trend of vegetarian diets with a newly imported plant-based meat product becoming an instant hit in the country.

According to multiple sources from the industry on Sunday, about 10,000 packages of meat-free patty product of Los Angeles, CA-based Beyond Meat were sold in just one month after being introduced to Korean consumers last month. Several online malls including Dongwon Mall and Gmarket started offering Beyond Meat’s plant-based meat products, as well as four vegan restaurants.

An official from Dongwon F&B Co., the exclusive supplier of Beyond Meat products in Korea, said that the brand has been well received in the marketplace given that it offers specially targeted products and are sold online.

USA: New Mexico Bans Destructive Coyote-killing Contests.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 2, 2019

New Mexico Bans Destructive Coyote-killing Contests

Governor Lujan Grisham Signs Bill Abolishing Organized Competition Killing of Coyotes for Prizes, Entertainment

SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham today signed bipartisan legislation that prohibits organizing, sponsoring or participating in coyote-killing contests in the state. Several conservation organizations praised the governor for signing the progressive, science-based legislation into law.

During these contests, participants compete to kill the greatest number, the largest or even the smallest coyotes for entertainment and prizes. At least 30 such contests are known to take place annually in New Mexico.

The bill, SB 76, was spearheaded by state senators Mark Moores (R-Albuquerque) and Jeff Steinborn (D-Las Cruces). The bill was carried on the House floor by Rep. Matthew McQueen (D-Galisteo).

“Killing contests are just blood sports. All they are about is killing as many animals as you can, and not about protecting livestock or property,” said Sen Moores. “No one is trying to restrict landowners’ ability to kill offending coyotes, but celebrating mass killing is just not good wildlife management.”

“With the signing of this bill, New Mexico is sending a powerful message that we value our wildlife and humane treatment of them,” said Sen. Steinborn.

“This victory has been nearly two decades in the making, the culmination of a homegrown campaign waged by thousands of dedicated New Mexicans appalled that these gruesome blood sports are hosted in our state,” said Jessica Johnson, chief legislative officer for Animal Protection Voters. “Today, we as a state are taking a giant step toward thoughtful, humane wildlife management and basic human decency.”

“This law makes New Mexico a leader in following sound science in its treatment of wild carnivores,” said Michael Robinson, senior conservation advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity. “We celebrate for coyotes, for endangered wolves that might have been mistakenly killed and for our children learning that humane values are New Mexico values.”

“There is no documented scientific evidence that coyote killing contests serve any legitimate wildlife management purpose,” said Albuquerque-based Project Coyote Science Advisory Board member Dave Parsons, a retired career wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “We applaud Gov. Lujan Grisham for taking a strong stance against these ethically and ecologically indefensible events.”

“Coyotes as a species don’t deserve to be vilified. They are important ecosystem managers that regulate populations of rodents and rabbits which are significant competitors for forage with other native herbivores and even livestock,” said Mary Katherine Ray, wildlife chair of the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter and long-time resident of rural Socorro county. “The random mass killing of coyotes that occurs with killing competitions is like targeting every cocker spaniel, a similarly sized canine, for death because one may have behaved problematically. The governor was right to sign the bill to stop this.”

“This is a huge victory for New Mexico’s wildlife and New Mexicans,” said Amanda Munro, communications director for the Southwest Environmental Center. “Our wildlife deserves management that reflects broad public opinion, respects all wildlife, and is informed by modern ecological understanding about the value of all species. This bill takes New Mexico a giant step in that direction.”

“These contests are abhorrent and unjustifiable — they are neither hunting nor wildlife management,” said Christopher Smith, southern Rockies wildlife advocate for WildEarth Guardians. “Banning this activity is a step towards science-based and ethical wildlife management and we are grateful to the bill’s sponsors and supporters and the governor.”

In January, New Mexico State Land Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard signed an executive order prohibiting wildlife killing contests for unprotected species on State Trust Lands. California banned the awarding of prizes for killing furbearer and nongame species in 2014, and Vermont banned coyote killing contests in 2018. Cities and counties in Arizona, New Mexico, and Wisconsin have passed resolutions condemning wildlife killing contests.

Background

Wildlife-killing contests occur throughout the United States. The best available science indicates that indiscriminately killing coyotes disrupts pack social structures, which can lead to increased depredation and compensatory breeding.

USA: You Did It ! – YOU Helped Save Wild Horses from Slaughter.

USA-Flagge

you did it 1

In a big win for animals, the U.S. government has reinstated rules to stop large purchases of wild horses and burros, protecting them from money-hungry “kill buyers” who want to ship them off to slaughter by the hundreds to turn a profit.

Under these protections, nobody may purchase more than four animals every 6 months, blocking the mass killing of horses at foreign slaughterhouses.

Victory! U.S. Reinstates Laws to Protect Wild Horses from Slaughter

Hundreds of thousands of readers have signed LFT petitions or sent comments to the Bureau of Land Management to stop the slaughter of America’s wild horses, and other activists and organizations across the country are working hard to stop the killing. This new decision shows that our voices are being heard, and takes us one major step closer to stopping the slaughter for good.

However, the fight for wild horses and burros is not over, and we will not rest until the slaughter of these majestic animals is banned completely.

There is hope: a bipartisan bill recently reintroduced to Congress, called the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, H.R. 961, would completely halt the transport of wild and domestic American horses and burros overseas for slaughter. Speak out to help this ban pass!

Dear Mark,

We are deeply honoured that Animal Aid Unlimited was featured in Psychology Today, when world-renowned scientist Dr Marc Bekoff used our recent rescue video Anguished mother dog wails for wounded baby. Sweetest Reunion! to highlight the profundity of animals’ emotions. Marc Bekoff is famous for his contributions to the science of animal behavior, animal psychology and to deepening our awareness of the complexity of animals’ emotions and has collaborated extensively with Jane Goodall. Bekoff said our video “could form the foundation for an entire course on the emotional lives of dogs and other animals. They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, and my impression after watching this video more than 15 times is that it’s worth countless words, and also could form the basis for an entire book.”

Friends of Animal Aid know how deeply animals feel, how clearly they can think, how intensely they can worry and love. It’s so wonderful to know that Marc Bekoff’s work helps the general public realize that much more keenly the truth about animals’ emotions. You can read the whole story here.

Cuddles: Rescuing a cutie pie in pain

The saddest little sweetheart sat frozen in the road, her pain so intense she couldn’t even drag herself to her mother. We brought her to our hospital expecting a fracture, but were delighted to discover that although her wound was really painful, her hip was sprained, not broken. A few days of rest, tasty food and lots of affection were just what the doctor ordered, and this love bug couldn’t wait to be back on her feet so that she could start playing again. Meet Cuddles now. Please donate today for happy new beginnings.

Surgery saved Maxine when her
lung was perforated and exposed

Air billowed out of the wound with every breath she took, and she cowered in a thicket, hiding and confused by pain. With a de-gloving wound over her ribs and a punctured lung, we didn’t know if this old girl could survive such a trauma. We rushed her into emergency surgery, inserting a tube to re-establish negative pressure, thoroughly flushed the wound and began the several layers of sutures that we hoped would save her. We would wait for several days before we knew if she would make it. But her extraordinary will to live was even bigger than her wound. Watch beautiful Maxine today.

And to help the sweetest older dogs who are out there now, please donate today.

Rescue of adorable puppy with crushed leg

Cherry’s leg amputation isn’t what this story is really about. It’s about how astoundingly sweet and almost you can say “gracious” this little one was through a shattering experience. We got the call that a puppy had been hit by a car and her leg was injured. But we’d never seen anything like this–her leg completely crushed and her face–so bewildered, so utterly vulnerable, engulfed by pain and yet trying it seemed to be just the best little patient she could possibly be. She had lost so much blood that we needed to give her 24 hours of IV fluid to build her strength enough to–we hoped–survive surgery and save her life. Cherry’s loving nature inspired everyone around her–to love.

Please donate. Because you can save a beautiful little life today.

Shocking rescue of dog impaled by steel rod (with happiest ending!)

You have to see this to believe the horror for a dog who got impaled by a steel rod at the base of an electrical pole, upside down, dangling and pinned by the rod which pushed right through her abdomen, almost out her back. She must have jumped from a ledge in the dark and landed on the rod, where she trembled in unthinkable pain until our rescue team, horrified at this ghastly sight, literally slid her backwards and up off the foot long rod to free her, in fear that she would die any moment.

You will believe in miracles when you see this astounding rescue and within a month of medical care, Queen’s complete recovery.  Help us get there for those who have no time to lose. Please donate.

At first we couldn’t see how massive his wound was

From a distance, this sweetheart’s wound looked like caked mud covering his backside. But when we examined him in the hospital we found to our horror that maggots had bored tunnels around his tail in a massive wound the size of a frying pan–and the pain this boy had endured was beyond imagining. Even cleaning the wound took hours but from the moment we started flushing with saline, the healing had begun. Meet Chipper now!

Sometimes love begins with “I can help.” Please donate.

Some amazing rescues and recoveries;

Please donate if you can;

Regards Mark.
