England / USA: Results of Top Universities Research – Plant-Based Foods are Good for Both Health and the Environment.

Plant-based foods are good for both health and the environment

RESEARCHHEALTHENVIRONMENT

New analysis by researchers from the University of Oxford and the University of Minnesota has identified a range of ‘win-win’ foods that both improve human health and have a low impact on the environment.

Plant-based foods are good for both health and the environment | University of Oxford

Foods associated with improved health (whole grain cereals, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and some vegetable oils high in unsaturated fats, such as olive oil) have among the lowest environmental impacts, they found. Foods with the largest negative environmental impacts—unprocessed and processed red meat—were consistently associated with the largest increases in disease risk.

The exceptions were fish, which is a healthy food but has moderate environmental impacts, and processed foods high in sugars, which can be harmful to health but have a relatively low environmental impact. Red meat (pork, beef, mutton, and goat) and processed meat had the highest environmental impacts of all foods and were also associated with the largest increases in disease risk. Other animal-source foods, such as dairy and poultry meat, had moderate environmental impacts and a small impact on disease risk compared to other foods.

Lead author Dr Michael Clark, of the Livestock, Environment and People (LEAP) project at the Oxford Martin School, and the Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford, says the findings could help consumers make better choices by equipping them with an understanding of the health and environmental impacts of different foods, and enable policymakers to issue more effective dietary guidelines.

‘Diets are a leading source of poor health and environmental harm,’ said Dr Clark. ‘Continuing to eat the way we do threatens societies, through chronic ill health and degradation of Earth’s climate, ecosystems, and water resources.

‘Choosing better, more sustainable diets is one of the main ways people can improve their health and help protect the environment. How and where a food is produced also affects its environmental impact, but to a much smaller extent than food choice.’

Using a comparison of an additional serving per day of 15 different foods, the researchers analysed collections of large epidemiological cohort studies—which follow populations of individuals through time— and life cycle assessments—which are used to estimate the environmental impacts per unit of food produced. The health and environmental analyses each incorporated five outcomes (total mortality, heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, and colorectal cancer for health; and greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water use, water pollution, and acidification potential for environment), and the results were consistent when applied across nearly all combinations of health and environmental outcomes.

‘The study adds to the growing body of evidence that stresses that replacing meat and dairy with a variety of plant-based foods can improve both your health and the health of the planet,’ said co-author Dr Marco Springmann, of the LEAP project and Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Population Health.

The full paper, ‘Multiple health and environmental impacts of foods,’ is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

USA: POTUS Joe Biden Urged To Shift To Plant-Centered Food System To Combat Climate Change.

POTUS Joe Biden Urged To Shift To Plant-Centered Food System To Combat Climate Change

The politician is under pressure to transform the US food system leading up to his first ever climate summit as President on Earth Day

POTUS Joe Biden Urged To Shift To Plant-Centered Food System | Plant Based News

POTUS Joe Biden is being urged to shift to a plant-centered food system to ‘combat climate change‘.

To mark Earth Day (April 22) the politician is hosting his first climate summit as President. There, he will discuss the ‘urgency of stringer climate action’ with 40 world leaders.

POTUS Joe Biden

Biden has also announced a $2 trillion proposal to ‘strengthen infrastructure while also tackling climate change’.

However, the plan does not include the promotion of animal-free food or support farmers in transitioning from traditional animal agriculture to plant-based production.

As a result, non-governmental organization ProVeg International has created a petition, calling on the politician to shift to a plant-centered food system.

At the time of writing, the petition has garnered more than 1,500 signatures already.

‘A terrifying prospect in climate change’

Moreover, Michael Webermann is the US Executive Director of ProVeg International. In a statement sent to PBN, he said: “To discuss environmental crises without centering food production is to wilfully avoid the facts.

“What we eat affects not just climate change, but the biggest issues facing the planet, including pandemic risks, deforestation, antibiotic resistance, and food insecurity.

“For instance, the FAO tells us that if 40 percent of all crops produced for feeding animals were used directly for human consumption, we could feed nine billion people by 2050. One has to ask when policy will reflect the urgency of this situation?”

Webermann then concluded: “We’re facing a terrifying prospect in climate change, but in diet change lies a real solution.

“Plant-centered diets, if adopted by many, could be the key to this crisis. We have scientific consensus. Biden’s plans must reflect it.”

England: Vegan Butcher Faux ‘Blown Away’ By Demand As Huge Queues Gather – Sells Out of Stock On 3 Consecutive Days !

Vegan Butcher Faux ‘Blown Away’ By Demand As Huge Queues Gather

For three consecutive days, Faux Butcher has witnessedd ‘overwhelming’ support and completely sold out of stock…

by Liam Giliver

vegan butcher says it is ‘blown away’ by the demand for its plant-based meats.

Last week, Faux Butcher became the first of its kind to open in the UK city of Nottingham.

‘Overwhelming’ support

For three consecutive days, Faux has witnessed ‘overwhelming’ support and has sold out of stock – which includes plant-based alternatives to meats such as ribs, chicken thighs, salami, brisket, and more.

“We’re absolutely blown away by the response today,” the business wrote on Instagram.

“We are officially clean out of everything. If you’re in the queue already then we have already accounted for your custom…

“Thank you to everyone who has stuck by the queues, we’re doing our absolute best to speed up the service, naturally COVID restrictions and our brand new premises mean we’re still finding our feet…

Faux Vegan Butcher

Owners Ritchie Stainsby and Lauren Nally told Nottingham Live its plant-based meat tastes, looks, and smells like the real thing.

The idea behind their vegan butcher’s is to sell plant-based alternatives by size and weight, which will provide an ‘authentic’ experience.

Lauren said: “Die-hard vegans, vegetarians, or anyone without specific dietary requirements can eat and enjoy our products. Maybe people want to go meat-free on Mondays or reduce their red meat consumption.

“This will be a nice way of not completely changing the food you like to cook and enjoy, with the added health benefits.”

UK: Over Half Of Brits To Buy Vegan Easter Treats This Year, Says Survey.

Over Half Of Brits To Buy Vegan Easter Treats This Year, Says Survey

Over Half Of Brits To Buy Vegan Easter Treats This Year, Says Survey

The top plant-based alternatives that people will be seeking out to replace are dairy chocolate, meat, and cheese

More than half of Brits will buy vegan Easter treats this year, according to a new survey.

The 1,000-person poll was conducted by Mexicana Vegan, the plant-based alternative to the UK’s number once spicy cheese.

It found that 54.8 percent of respondents are ‘likely to buy vegan alternative products to traditional Easter food this year’.

The top plant-based alternatives that people will be seeking out to replace are dairy chocolate (48.4 percent), meat (36.4 percent), and cheese (32.3 percent). Moreover, 22.6 percent of people polled are planning to cook vegan alternatives to the usual Easter Sunday dishes this year. A whopping 47.2 percent cited the desire to be ‘healthier’ as the main reason for going vegan this Easter.

‘We’ve seen demand soar’

Lisa Harrison is the Senior Brand Manager for Mexicana Vegan. In a statement sent to PBN, she said: “So much of our Easter traditions focus on food, whether it’s gifting Easter eggs to friends or family, or indulging ourselves over the long Easter weekend; the highlight being Easter Sunday lunch.

“And with lockdown measures being lifted from 29 March to allow outdoor gatherings of either six people or 2 households, people will be planning their Easter food experiences and what they will be giving to friends and family this Easter.

“It’s great to see that people are strongly considering going vegan this Easter. We’ve seen the demand for our plant-based cheezes soar over lockdown as people seek out healthier alternatives and the need to pursue a healthy diet and lifestyle has never been so paramount as it has been over the last year.”

EU: STOP PLANT-BASED DAIRY CENSORSHIP – Petition, Please Support.

WAV Comment – we feel this a very important petition to support as it has huge implications throughout the EU regarding plant based dairy censorship.  Please give your support, thank you – petition link below.

STOP PLANT-BASED DAIRY CENSORSHIP

Dear European Commission and EU Member States,

We want you to put a halt to plant-based dairy censorship

Please reject amendment 171. If adopted, it would totally counteract the consumer shift to more sustainable eating habits that’s urgently needed to fight climate change.

Dairy terms are already protected by law. Amendment 171 would go further and censor all use of dairy-related language, packaging, or imagery for plant-based foods.

Words and phrases like “contains no dairy” or “creamy texture” might be banned. The same goes for a tweet or an advert mentioning scientific data showing that a product causes, for example, “half the carbon emissions of dairy butter”. Bizarrely, the amendment could even prohibit plant-based foods from using photos of their own products on packaging.

In this way, amendment 171 would not only hide information from consumers, but also hinder innovation and the emerging sustainable food sector. Altogether, it would be a huge reversal of the work done so far to meet the EU’s own goals on public health and sustainability, as agreed under the terms of the Paris Agreement. Given the urgency of the climate crisis, it’s a highly irresponsible move.

Please add your name and tell the European Union to stop plant-based censorship.

England: Introducing Benjamin Zaphaniah – Poet, Animal Rights Advocate, Lifelong Vegan.

I have ‘loved’ (in a ‘blokey’ sort of way) ! Benjamin since I first saw him at a London animal rights demo decades ago.  So seeing him again the BBC this morning; I thought it was time to introduce him to you.  Here are a few shorts of his life and actions; a passionate animal rights advocate, he wrote the foreword to Keith Mann‘s book From Dusk ’til Dawn: An insider’s view of the growth of the Animal Liberation Movement

Dedicated – Yes;

do we want him – for sure.

Regards Mark

Benjamin Obadiah Iqbal Zephaniah (born 15 April 1958)[1] is a British writer and dub poet. He was included in The Times list of Britain’s top 50 post-war writers in 2008

Turning vegan at 13 Benjamin is pretty much a lifelong vegan. He is now 58 and as a busy performer, writer and with a passion for martial arts, he just naturally shows people what it is like being vegan and doesn’t “ram veganism down peoples throats”.

Zephaniah is an honorary patron of The Vegan Society,[12]

Viva! (Vegetarians’ International Voice for Animals),[13]

EVOLVE! Campaigns,[14] the anti-racism organisation Newham Monitoring Project with whom he made a video[15] in 2012 about the impact of Olympic policing on black communities, Tower Hamlets Summer University and is an animal rights advocate.

In 2004, he wrote the foreword to Keith Mann‘s book From Dusk ’til Dawn: An insider’s view of the growth of the Animal Liberation Movement, a book about the Animal Liberation Front.

In August 2007, he announced that he would be launching the Animal Liberation Project, alongside People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.]

He became a vegan when he read poems about “shimmering fish floating in an underwater paradise, and birds flying free in the clear blue sky”.
