About Us.

In the following we are providing a little insight about ourselves; what drives us; and some of our past animal experiences / campaign work.

This section of the site has been compiled partly due to the request and support of our Patron Mr Philip Wollen:  14/6/21 – Mr Philip Wollen Becomes The First WAV Patron; We Are (More Than) Delighted, and Welcome Him To The Group. – World Animals Voice

MARK – England.

I despise the suffering of any animal at all levels. As such, from my early teenage years I entered into the maelstrom of events which is known as the animal rights movement, doing what I could, when I could, to act and speak in the defence of the suffering voiceless, and you know what, to this day I have never left or had the slightest feeling of ever wanting to.

I have campaigned over many years about endless animal issues – you can see several of them on this site.  The transport of live animals is now, and has really always been my ‘top thing’ on the campaign front; and I personally have spent (to date; now 2022) over 33 years obtaining information and presenting reports and formal complaints to the EU and other ‘political beings’ on this very subject.  Over all these years, I took part in endless campaigns at South East England ports in attempts to try and stop the live trade.  I have acted as the EU Correspondent for anti live transport organisations here in SE England in the past; have been an investigator for a couple of English animal welfare organisations into live farm animal exports (particularly concentrating on horses as special ‘projects’) and have also worked with (Kent) – my home county Trading Standards, to bring successful prosecutions against live animal transporters who have broken the regulations associated with live animal transport; namely Regulation 1/2005 on the supposed ‘protection’ of animals during transport – please see more on it at  EUR-Lex – 32005R0001 – EN – EUR-Lex (europa.eu) .  Also, I have worked with welfare group campaigner friends based in the Netherlands when investigating.

England: Another Terrible Loss – John Callaghan. – World Animals Voice

After witnessing the endless suffering of live animals undergoing transportation, and also spending some time gathering info on ‘what happens’ to dairy industry animals at dairy farms in North Eastern USA during the 90’s, I turned my back on meat and dairy at an early age; although I was never really much of meat eater at all, even as a young kid anyway.  My beliefs were then, as they still are now – babies (of any species) belong with their mothers, and after witnessing the suffering of young (baby) calves being shipped to foreign lands from the UK and Ireland; without ever seeing or being fed by their mothers again; I decided all those years ago that it was time for action; time to try and change the ‘way’.

Here in England, during 2021 and after the UK getting away from the pathetic shackles of what is the EU  (and I say that wearing my ex EU animal correspondent hat); which (as an EU members state) makes live animal exports mandatory as part of membership, we (UK – as a nation) were finally given the opportunity by the British government to take back national control and stop the live trade in farm animals going for slaughter and further fattening.  (as of January 2022) – this legislation is currently working its way through both chambers of UK Parliament which will see live exports from the UK being stopped officially by law; something we have worked so hard to achieve over so many, many years.  Hopefully this legislation will drop into place in UK law in early 2022.

A Netted Seal Pup – Russia.

Another very major campaign that I became involved in was the slaughter of baby seal pups within the Russian federation.  Working with Robert who was a great friend; finally, after a long and often difficult campaign, and taking our fight to both Downing St in London; and the EU in Brussels, we eventually stopped the massacre of Russian seal pups for their white coats.  Campaigning against the fur trade has always been an important issue as it involves so much cruelty, which is undertaken primarily for sad humans and their vanity reasons.

Top man Robert campaigning.

Campaigning at EU Brussels with ‘political (supportive) men in suits’ – I am back right in baseball cap.

Catching Strays – Serbia.

Stray animals get a bad time wherever they exist.  There are around 500 million of them trying to survive worldwide.  In 2005 I started an organisation (SAV) specifically concentrating on stray dogs and cats within Serbia. I had no funding and it was difficult; especially regarding communication aka languages; but you battle on if you feel that your views are right no matter what others say; and I wanted to at least be a voice for strays.  You can read more about it here – About Serbian Animals. | Serbian Animals Voice (SAV)  – we (Some Serbian campaigners and I) battled with the Serbian government for years; and despite the threats made by the authorities to Serbian animal shelter campaigners, especially when we exposed live animals being exported – Serbia: It Now Appears The Sheep Exported Live To Israel WERE From Serbia; Despite The Threats. | Serbian Animals Voice (SAV)  – we continued to be a powerful voice; much to their annoyance  and attempts to close us down.  The Serbian site continues to this day, Serbian Animals Voice (SAV) | a voice for the voiceless  has now moved away from specific Serbian issues (campaigners there continue) to just repeating many of the posts which feature on this (WAV) site, which is now the primary, but SAV is still regularly visited by many.

Sheep Being Exported from Serbia – Despite Dismissal by the Government.
Does anything need to be said ?

I detest bear bile farming, it is big obscene; and have more than the greatest respect and admiration for Jill Robinson who founded ‘Animals Asia’ after her experiences of visiting and witnessing the suffering at a bear bile farm.  They are one of the great welfare organisations today; aiming to rescue all the bile bears from Viet Nam in the next year or so.

Brilliant Jill – Animals Asia.

Personally and professionally I have always worked in military aerospace; am qualified in electronic engineering and aerospace technology; and after 25 years going down this road I decided to stop walking and divert; to put even more time into my role as an advocate for animals and animal rights.  “It is never too late to change the road you are on” – as said by Led Zepp; ‘Stairway to Heaven’.

When I have spare time (is there any ?); I enjoy looking after a number of bonsai trees that I have in my own collection.  I do not really do television, but instead devote time to listening to music, which I find very inspirational and also something which can be used as an escape valve if the need arises.  I dabble in wildlife photography and have always been passionate about photographing foxes

I am a passionate vegan but never try to force my views on people – if they ask why; then I tell them.  I think that I have seen, heard, witnessed; read and watched enough animal cruelty ‘things’ over my lifetime that is probably enough to last several lifetimes.  But animal rights and animal welfare gets in your blood as many of you will know; and having the pleasure of getting to know and communicate different experiences and campaigns with fellow campaigners all over the world makes it something that you can never wish, or want, to get away from.

The brilliant crew at AAU India.

For example, over the last few years I have been in very regular contact with animal friends / founders at ‘Animal Aid Unlimited’ who operate in India cut to the stray animals thing.  They undertake some fantastic rescues and often bring animals back to good from very ‘near death’ experiences.  As a group they have my full respect for everything they undertake; you can see a lot of their super videos of rescues and recovery by visiting Search Results for “animal aid unlimited” – World Animals Voice – please check them out !

You can see a bit more about me and investigate my campaign stories more by visiting About Us. | Serbian Animals Voice (SAV)  – sorry there is some military aircraft stuff also; but that’s what 25 of military jets does to you !

Well; this hopefully is a little about me.  To all you animal campaigners out there being a voice; you are very much doing the right thing; you always will; be yourself no matter what ‘they’ say; and keep on fighting the fight.

If you feel you are acting in the defence of animals, then go on doing it ! – be the voice for the voiceless.

Lidl GB gets the label “cruelty free”

Cruelty Free International

Today we are delighted to announce that Lidl GB has become the latest addition to our Leaping Bunny approved family! 🎉
All Lidl GB own brand household and cosmetic products now have our gold standard stamp of approval 🐰

Our CEO, Michelle Thew, said:
“Lidl is a much-loved high street brand, known for its affordable products which don’t compromise on quality.
So, we’re thrilled to be able to grant the Lidl GB ’s household and cosmetics ranges Leaping Bunny approval, making cruelty free Veganuary swaps this January both affordable and accessible across the country.

“Leaping Bunny approval is rigorous and take many months, and it’s no mean feat to do this for both cosmetics and household products at the same time!
Congratulations to Lidl GB and welcome to the growing Leaping Bunny family.”
Find your next “cruelty free” favourite via our quick and easy Leaping Bunny Search tool. https://bit.ly/3ngxJH7

https://crueltyfreeinternational.org/leapingbunny

And I mean…While the news is encouraging, it must be treated with caution.

They’re two separate things: The term “cruelty-free” has long been associated with ending animal testing. So the Leaping Bunny logo and approval means that these are products which are not tested on animals.

However, that does not mean that the products are vegan, meaning that they do not contain any animal ingredients.

Of course, for some it is incomprehensible how a product can be presented as cruelty free if it contains parts of an animal or its products (like milk, honey…)

Furthermore, Cruelty Free International hasn’t enjoyed the same level of trust it once did for a long time, and with good reason:

For example, they have Garnier listed on their website as one of their trusted brands even though they are owned by L’Oreal. They also declare Body Shop as one of their Trusted Brands, which was one of the first vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics companies, but on March 17, 2006 was sold on L’Oreal, a deal that many animal rights activists saw as a betrayal by the company to customers and animals and a breach of trust.

Because L’Oreal certainly conducts animal testing.

For several years, Cruelty Free International has dropped the standards. This is wrong not only for animal welfare, but for all the amazing companies that have been “cruelty free” for years and have done the right thing.

Conclusion: A vegan product is not automatically cruelty-free and vice versa. If you’re vegan then your best bet is to find products that are certified cruelty-free and vegan.

My best regards to all, Venus

Germany: the city of Rodgau bans all animals in the circus – thank you!

As the first municipality in Germany, Rodgau will no longer allocate urban areas to circuses or organizers who display animals of any kind.
In December, the city council had approved a motion by the parliamentary group of the Animal Welfare Party by a majority.

In a letter to Mayor Jürgen Hoffmann and the factions of the local council, PETA thanked them for this forward-looking and animal-friendly decision.
Because even domesticated animals such as horses, alpacas or goats suffer from the much too small cages and enclosures, the constant transport and the unnatural tricks that they are forced to do in the presence of bright headlights and loud music.

The animal rights organization hopes more cities and towns will follow suit, and is also campaigning at the federal level with a petition for a regulation that includes all animal species.

“With this groundbreaking decision, Rodgau paves the way for a society in which the needs of animals are respected and they are no longer locked up to entertain paying visitors and involuntarily have to serve as circus clowns,” says biologist Dr. Yvonne Würz, PETA’s specialist for animals in the entertainment industry.

“A nationwide ban, at least on wild animals, is long overdue. Ultimately, all animal training must be banned in order to end animal suffering in the manege and circus wagons.”

Poor animal husbandry in the circus

A species-appropriate accommodation of animals in circuses is not possible due to the system.

In 2016, the Federal Council called for wild animals such as elephants, giraffes and hippos to be banned from circuses.
In his motion for a resolution, he reasoned that these animal species are subject to considerable suffering, regardless of the circus company.
Animal welfare violations are also common in farms that do not keep wild animals.

Again and again, PETA has to ask the veterinary authorities to enforce the applicable guidelines there as well.
The animal rights organization calls for a general ban on animals in circuses.
The accommodation in small enclosures and an often inadequate supply, the constant transport and the training characterized by violence and coercion also lead to behavioral disorders, illnesses and often to an early death in animals such as camels, horses or ponies.

Germany should follow the example of other countries in this regard: Greece, Malta and Cyprus have already completely banned the keeping of animals in circuses.
According to a representative opinion poll, the majority of Germans (62 percent) are of the opinion that animals should not be kept and presented in mobile circuses at all.

Future without animal training

Successful circus greats prove that animal-free shows inspire spectators: Circus Roncalli, for example, said goodbye to wild animal training in the 1990s, took horses out of the program in 2018 and is now completely animal-free.
The company’s concept and future-oriented hologram technology are popular around the world.

PETA’s motto, in part, is: Animals aren’t there to entertain us.

TEXT: PETA

And I mean…The circus association wants to sue!!
The chairman of the Association of German Circus Companies, Ralf Huppertz, considers this ban to be unjustified and announces legal action.
According to Huppertz, daily training is healthy for the animals, body and mind are challenged. This also increases the general well-being of the animals.
According to Huppertz, lawsuits have already been successfully filed against many municipal bans on wild animals. This ban has no chance of enduring, he said.

Shall we bet, Mr. Hupertz?
That this time at least one German town, that of Rodgau does not give in to the pressure of the circus jugglers and circus animal tormentors?

In memory of Jill Phipps

15th January 1964 -1st February 1995

January 15th would have been Jill’s birthday, and February 1st will be the 27th anniversary of her murder while trying to save animals. She died fighting for the rights of the oppressed. If you’ve not watched the film about her life do take a look-

A brief history

On that day there were only 33 protestors, yet there were 100 police officers.
Jill had no intention of deliberately putting herself in danger, she and the others had assumed that the police and the lorry driver would have a little more respect for human life than they had for animals lives.
This was not the case, the police were determined to keep the vehicles moving.
They had instructed the driver Stephen Yates only minutes before to keep going and not to stop, he only did so after Jill had been fatally injured beneath the wheels.

The cattle truck belonged a company called Phoenix Aviation and had already begun flying calves from Coventry Airport to Amsterdam in November 1994.
The owner, Christopher Barrett-Jolley, was a known gunrunner who had flown arms to vulnerable developing countries including South Yemen and Sierra Leone, and was later jailed for smuggling 270 kg of cocaine into Southend.
He was a man completely without scruples who would seize any opportunity to make money regardless of the suffering and loss of life it caused.

After Jills’ death, the veal flights continued for just 3 more months.
In the following weeks the tragedy became a huge focus of media attention.
Furthermore it acted as a catalyst throughout the country to further motivate and unite people to end this brutal trade wherever it was happening.

27 years after her tragic death, the struggle to end live animal exports continues and we are determined that she will never be forgotten.

regards, Venus

The time of the “good fascists”

Hong Kong: About 2000 small animals, including hamsters, will be killed after several tested positive for the coronavirus at a Hong Kong pet store where an employee was also infected.

Hong Kong will also stop the sale of hamsters and the import of small mammals, according to officials from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. The pet shop employee tested positive for the Delta variant on Monday, and several hamsters imported from the Netherlands at the store tested positive as well.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, animals do not appear to play a significant role in spreading the coronavirus. But Hong Kong authorities said they were not ruling out transmission between animals and humans.

“We cannot exclude the possibility that the shopkeeper was in fact actually infected from the hamsters,” said Edwin Tsui, a controller at the Centre for Health Protection.

“If you own a hamster, you should keep your hamsters at home, do not take them out,” department director Leung Siu-fai said at a news conference. “All pet owners should observe good personal hygiene, and after you have been in contact with animals and their food, you should wash your hands.

“Do not kiss your pets,” he added.

As a precautionary measure, customers who bought hamsters from the store after January 7 would be traced and be subject to mandatory quarantine and must hand over their hamsters to authorities to be put down, officials said.

They said all pet stores in Hong Kong must stop selling hamsters and that about 2000 small mammals, including hamsters and chinchillas, would be killed in a “humane manner” (!!)

humane disposal” of the Minks in Denmark because of Corona

Customers who bought hamsters in Hong Kong from December 22 would be subject to mandatory testing and were urged not contact others until they recorded negatives tests. If their hamsters test positive, they will be subject to quarantine.

Hong Kong has been grappling with a local omicron outbreak traced to several Cathay Pacific crew members who dined at bars and restaurants across the city before testing positive for the Omicron variant.

https://www.smh.com.au/world/asia/hong-kong-to-kill-2000-animals-after-hamsters-get-covid-19-20220118-p59pbs.html

And I mean…We suffer from mass hysteria and from a dictatorship.

We don’t need to look to Hong Kong, it’s a global dictatorship.
It’s no longer about the Corona virus, it’s about total control, about supremacy.

The dream of a few is to accumulate enough power to rule and exploit the rest of humanity.
An Omicron wave is very welcome there.

Because according to the will of leading billionaires and heads of government, this Corona dictatorship can be extended for years under the guise of pandemics.
Once people are conditioned like mice and rats, they’re just manipulative toys in the hands of those in power, whether it’s business or politics.
But the fact that defenseless animals are innocently dragged into this spiral of violence raises the suspicion of psychopathy.

By now, our entire “Banana Republic” has also become accustomed to the idea of a second, third, fifth or nth wave of the COVID-19 mutations.
The thing can only work if scaremongering is created from above to keep the subjects in line, and then there is no way out of fascism or totalitarianism.

“When fascism returns it will not tell us: “Good morning, I am the Fascism”. He will tell us: “I am the new pandemic”, said a friend of mine.
I think he is right.

My best regards to all, Venus

‘World’s First’ Vegan Violin Crafted By Musician Using Wild Berries And Spring Water.

The violin sidesteps traditional materials and contains plant-based products instead. Credit: Vegan Violins / PBN

Traditional violin making can include products derived from the skin and bones of animals

For the first time ever, a violin has received certification from The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark. The creator of the musical instrument – traditionally crafted with animal products – maintains that the item is more ethical and acoustically speaking, an improvement.

Irish musician Padraig O’Dubhlaoidh is behind the creation, which took years of research to complete. The violin maker’s instruments have been played at high-profile venues, including Buckingham Palace, the White House, Carnegie Hall, and the Royal Albert Hall.

Violin makers have historically used non-vegan materials in their designs, such as animal hide glue, derived from the skin, bones, and tendons of animals. It is typically sourced from horses but rabbits, fish, and other species can be used too.

Further, violin strings and bows can contain ivory, horse tail hair, and animal intestines, among other animal-derived products.

But O’Dubhlaoidh is insistent that animal body parts are not needed to create the instrument. The musician stayed true to the traditional tools and methods used in violin production, but with some modern twists of his own.

For instance, to develop the purfling decoration that wraps around the instrument’s edges, he used wild berries and spring water sourced from beneath the granite of the Malvern Hills in the UK, where O’Dubhlaoidh lives.

Although animal-free strings and bows do exist, they are not currently registered with the Vegan Trademark.

For ‘ethical musicians’

O’Dubhlaoidh explained the process in a statement sent to PBN.

“I learned a lot about my craft during years of research and ultimately, it was the science of conservation that brought about a series of breakthroughs leading to success. During my experiments, I also discovered that there are unforeseen advantages to a vegan violin.

“Apart from the benefit to animals, society, and our environment, it has become very clear that animal-based glues have harmful effects on violins, inducing powerful tensions on wooden components. The adhesive used in my vegan violins however, has no such effect. Irrespective of ethics, this is an acoustic improvement.

“With our planet facing crises on almost every front, the collective voice of people wanting a fairer future grows stronger every day. Ethical musicians are part of this movement and have long wished for a violin that is fully vegan yet retains all the qualities of the classic instrument.”

The Vegan Society’s marketing manager, Ericka Durgahee, applauded the launch.

“It’s incredibly exciting to have the world’s first vegan violin registered with the Vegan Trademark. This will be music to the ears of so many violinists who have longed for a high-quality instrument that is free from animal products,” they said in a statement.

“Every violin is also completely bespoke with the sound and feel tailored to the player’s individual style and preference. Padraig has done a fantastic job and we’re extremely proud of what he has produced.”

Joaquin Phoenix, Stephen Fry, And More Celebs Battle To Save Moon Bears From Extinction.

Celebrities like Ricky Gervais, Paul McCartney, and Alicia Silverstone are pushing for the end of the bear bile trade

Ahost of high-profile names are joining forces in an effort to protect the endangered Asiatic black bear (aka moon bear). The species is being pushed to the brink of extinction in Vietnam due to bear bile farming – a trade purportedly rife with animal cruelty.

Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Judi Dench, Stephen Fry, Slash, Russell Crowe, Ricky Gervais, Alicia Silverstone, Mayim Bialik, William Shatner, Alan Cumming, Kesha and Joaquin Phoenix are among those pushing to rescue the remaining bears trapped in Vietnamese bile farms.

What is bear bile farming?

Bear bile farming keeps moon bears captive in order to extract bile from their gallbladders. It began in Asia in the 1980s with the view of using it for medicinal purposes, according to animal protection charity Animals Asia.

And it does come with benefits, the non-profit clarifies. The bile contains high levels of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), which can be used to treat liver and gallbladder afflictions in humans.

But obtaining the substance comes at a brutal cost. The trade involves keeping bears in cramped cages and often unhygienic conditions. The extraction process is invasive and results in “unimaginable physical and psychological suffering,” Animals Asia adds.

Some bears must endure the “free drip” method, whereby a hole is created in the animal’s gallbladder and repeatedly reopened. Others undergo extraction of the bile through a four-inch needle.

Bear bile farming was outlawed in Vietnam in 1992. But legal loopholes have allowed producers to continue their operations. Animals are frequently poached from the wild to be used for their bile, which has shaken wild moon bear populations. They are now on the endangered species list.

In 2017, after years of rallying, the Vietnamese government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Animals Asia. The agreement assigned Animals Asia as its partner in shutting down the trade for good.

The charity is working to rescue the remaining moon bears in Vietnam – it predicts there are around 400 left on Vietnamese farms. However, around 12,000 bears are still living on bile farms across Asia, the organization states.

The rescue mission

Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre in Tam Dao is almost at full capacity, following the recent rescue of its 651st bear. Many of the rescues were young adults (five years or younger) or cubs, who were just a few months’ old.

Now, the organization is building a second facility to accommodate the next group of rescued animals. This 12-hectare sanctuary will be located in the Bach Ma National Park in central Vietnam. The charity hopes to save all of Vietnam’s captive moon bears from bile farms by 2026.

Celebrity support

Animals Asia launched a petition to raise awareness of the issue, which includes a pledge to “raise your paw for the moon bear.”

Broadcaster and actor, Fry, has placed his support behind the campaign. “The beautiful moon bear is at risk of becoming extinct in Vietnam if we don’t do something to save them. They have been cruelly farmed for their bile, often ripped from their mothers in the wild when they were just baby cubs,” he said in a statement sent to PBN

Actor Dench, also a signatory of the pledge, said she is “proud” to be a part of the effort, which is a “crucial step” in saving the species and “giving back the life stolen from hundreds of bears left in bile farms.”

She commented: “Animals Asia has pledged to rescue every last bear from every last bile farm across Vietnam. So I’m pledging my support, and I’m hoping thousands more will pledge their support as well.  Join me. Raise your paw for the moon bear, to finally end bear bile farming in Vietnam, and ensure that no bear is left behind.”

Those interested can find the petition and pledge here.

Spanish company wants to breed octopuses in aquaculture

From 2023, 3000 tons of octopus meat could be produced annually on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria.
Science and animal welfare protest. Because octopuses are highly intelligent and sensitive

Octopuses are amazing creatures.
With their eight arms and sac-like body, they appear alien – and yet they are more similar to us humans than most vertebrates: they have an excellent memory, they plan, deceive, play.
They manage to open child-resistant screw caps.
They even have distinct personalities, being shy, curious, or reckless.
They have likes or dislikes of their own kind as well as people.

And something else makes octopuses special: they are difficult to reproduce in captivity. But that’s exactly what a Spanish company has managed to do.

According to the Nueva Pescanova Group, octopuses could be bred for several generations in their own aquaculture for the first time.
In the summer of 2022, the first animals should come onto the market.

President of the Las Palmas Port Authority port Luis Ibarra said “it was the biggest private Investment in the history of the port which will create 450 jobs and make the Las Palmas Harbour-La Luz- the world`s biggest exporter of octopus”

From 2023, 3,000 tons of octopus meat (!!) are to be produced annually on the Spanish Canary Island of Gran Canaria, for example for popular dishes such as “Pulpo a la Gallega”.
The company is investing around 65 million euros in the project. The targeted main customer countries are Spain, Italy, Greece and Japan.

Does aquaculture relieve the marine ecosystems?

It is estimated that around 350,000 tons of octopus are caught and processed worldwide every year – about ten times as much as in 1950.
The Nueva Pescanova Group argues that the number of wild catches can be reduced by around ten percent with production in aquaculture.
Whether the pressure on wild populations caused by factory farming will actually decrease is anything but clear.

Biologists and animal rights activists warn – on the contrary – that aquaculture is increasing the pressure on marine ecosystems. Because many edible fish are – like octopuses – carnivores.
Already today, around a third of the global catches are fed to animals, around half of them in aquaculture.

According to critics, it is also certain that octopuses cannot be kept anywhere near species-appropriate in aquaculture.
Unlike fish, the intelligent octopuses in their water tanks would be aware of their hopeless situation.
And they are loners.

It seems unlikely that this elementary need of the animals is taken into account in mass aquaculture.
Especially since there are hardly any legal regulations for keeping them: Most national and EU keeping requirements relate to vertebrates.

Housing conditions and method of killing: unknown

It is also to be feared that speed is more important than avoiding stress and pain when slaughtering on assembly lines.
When asked by the British BBC, the company declined to comment on the husbandry of the octopuses, the origin of the food or the killing method.

As early as 2019, scientists had declared that breeding octopuses in captivity for food purposes was a “terrible idea”.
And not only from an environmental point of view, but also from a moral point of view.

The company is yet to reveal exactly what the octopus tanks look like, what “toys” they claim to use for stimulation and what source of food they will rely on
On paper, however, the claims are noble.
According to the authors, keeping octopuses in aquaculture with high animal welfare standards is “impossible”.

The clever cephalopods already enjoy better legal protection in the United Kingdom than in Spain.
Experts there had viewed more than 300 scientific studies – and had come to the conclusion that octopuses were “sentient beings”.
There is “strong scientific evidence” that animals can feel joy, but also pain, stress and despair.
The scientific assessment led to the inclusion of the animals in the Animal Welfare Bill.

https://www.geo.de/natur/tierwelt/unternehmen-will-kraken-in-aquakulturen-zuechten-31494072.html

And I mean…In a year when many countries have passed laws protecting species they believe are sentient beings, the news that the world’s first octopus farm has opened in the Canary Islands have understandably been met with shock, disgust and outrage around the world for every compassionate and civilized human being.

For the thousands of these animals will be bred and imprisoned in cruel, prison-like conditions.
Just like any animal in factory farming.

Known as the “Einsteins of the sea”, octopuses have large, complex brains.
In fact, they have nine: one central brain between the eyes and separate mini-brains at the base of each tentacle – meaning that each arm, quite literally, has a mind of its own.
They can navigate their way through mazes and remember the solutions.

They are solitary, territorial animals, as curious as humans, and cramming them into barren communal tanks or netted pools, with little or no stimulation – as is common of all factory farm systems – would condemn them to a miserable existence.
All agree that octopuses would suffer dreadfully in such conditions.

To make matters worse, there is currently no legislation in Spain, or elsewhere, to protect octopus welfare on farms or during their slaughter.

In reality, the farm – close to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria – means countless animals will spend their lives vulnerable to pain and suffering, and endure agonising deaths.

The solution, of course, is to stop eating octopuses – and, indeed, all animals.
Even if they’re not farmed, octopuses captured for food still suffer: they are often speared or burned with caustic chemicals to force them out of specialised traps.
Many are snared in massive, indiscriminate trawl nets.
On deck, if they’re not left to suffocate in agony, they’re clubbed, stabbed, or butchered alive.

To allow the world’s very first octopus factory farm to open, when we know and understand the impact it would have on these intelligent, feeling beings, would be a monstrous act and a shame on the Canary Islands government.

We must act quickly to prevent this farm from being built.
As soon as we have a petition about this, we will inform you further.
