Brazil: Deforestation is organized crime!

brasilien

In Brazil, thousands of square kilometers of rainforest are destroyed each year, and this year’s depletion of nature reaches its highest level since 2008: According to the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment, a total of 7900 square kilometers of forest were cut between August 2017 and July 2018.

This corresponds to an area of more than one million soccer fields!!

Deforestation has risen by more than 13 percent since last year. Environment Minister Edson Duarte cited illegal logging as the reason and blamed “increased organized crime”. Brazil must expand the fight against environmental violations and protect the sustainable development of the biome.

Most trees were cleared in the states of Pará and Mato Grosso. Mato Grosso grows much of Brazil’s grain.

According to critics, the forest has to give way above all to expanding agriculture.

The rainforest in the Amazon region is the largest on Earth. Much of the forest lies on Brazilian territory. Newly elected President Jair Bolsonaro had announced in the election campaign to have a road paved through the rainforest. He is also considering merging the environment with the Ministry of Agriculture. Minister Duarte warned against the merger. Critics fear that environmental protection, with the merger behind the interests of the powerful agricultural lobbies must stand behind.

In the past year, the deforestation of the rainforest had fallen by 16 percent compared to the previous year and amounted to almost 7,000 square kilometers. The lowest level was reached in 2012, when only 4500 square kilometers of forest were cleared.

In 2004, the then government adopted measures to combat deforestation. In the year, an area the size of Haiti – over 27,000 square kilometers was cut down.

My comment: nature does not need us, we need nature.

If we destroy its last resources, who won?

UK: ‘Natural England’ (?) Issue Licences To Kill Multiple Red-listed Bird Species – Is This ‘Natural’ ??

England

Full article:

Licences granted to kill multiple Red-listed species

Natural England and Natural Resources Wales have given the go-ahead for Red-listed species such as Eurasian Curlew, Eurasian Skylark and House Sparrow to be shot.

The full list of birds for which killing permits have been issued includes several other scarcely believable species, including Blackbird, Eurasian Bullfinch, European Robin, Great Tit, Northern Lapwing and Red Kite.

Officials from both organisations have said the permits were handed out for air safety, public health and safety and to prevent serious damage to livestock, and it’s likely thousands of birds have so far been killed under the licenses.

Please click on the above link to read the full article.

WAV Comment – So suddenly birds are a public health and livestock concern ! –  The Brits are not going to take this easy and accept it.  We think quite rightly there are going to be serious responses to this action.  Can we suggest that ‘Natural England’ change their name to ‘Farmers Friend Natural Killers’ – going against nature !

England: Chris Packham; Wildlife Campaigner and Broadcaster; Becomes CIWF Patron.

England

From Compassion In World Farming (CIWF), London:

We are delighted to announce that naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham has joined us as a Patron. The popular TV presenter, conservationist and photographer has been a wildlife enthusiast since he was a small boy. Chris has become a well-known champion for wildlife, fronting TV shows including, The Really Wild Show, BBC Springwatch and Autumnwatch.

A compassionate campaigner

Chris is also a very active campaigner spearheading The People’s Manifesto for Wildlife and leading the way with his new London rally #ThePeoplesWalkForWildlife – on which our CEO, Philip Lymbery, attended in September, along with thousands of others.

Passionate about finding a better way for us all to take action to protect our wildlife and the wider environment, Chris is a wonderful advocate to have on board and encourage others to help make a difference.

“There’s an old expression ‘you are what you eat’. I think we need to change it to ‘what you eat says who you are’ because now each and every one of our diets needs a critical rethink,”  said Chris, on becoming our Patron.

“From our health perspective, from the point of animal welfare, to the impact farming has on wildlife and to the way that our food choices shape the environment of the entire planet. Thinking about eating no, less or better quality meat or dairy needs to be on our agenda. As does a better understanding of the way modern farming practices are shaping our world and how we can work together with farmers to improve these for everything and everyone’s benefit. Young people in particular need to re-connect to the nature of food and learn the true cost of its production and food labelling, so we can make informed choices must be significantly improved. All this is why I am pleased to be a Patron for CIWF, a body calling for reforms based on science, best practice and compassion.”

Joining the fight to end factory farming

It is fantastic to have such a respected and dedicated Patron supporting us in the fight to end factory farming.

Chris spoke in depth about his concerns regarding industrial scale farming and its impact on the natural world when interviewed for Philip’s blog and Big Table podcast recently.

Philip said: “Chris is a wonderful advocate to have on board. We look forward to him supporting our fight to end factory farming.”

USA: Stop Trump’s Assault on Whales And Dolphins!

Support the NRDC with their campaign to:

Stop Trump’s Assault on Whales And Dolphins!

Protect Whales and Dolphins from Seismic Blasting

The Trump administration just gave fossil fuel companies the green light to explore for oil and gas off our Atlantic coast using deafening seismic airguns.

Meanwhile, Congress is considering bad legislation that would slash critical protections for ocean wildlife. While NRDC continues to fight the administration in court, you can help protect whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals by keeping the pressure on Congress to stand strong against Trump’s giveaway to Big Oil.

The Trump administration just gave fossil fuel companies the green light to explore for oil and gas off our Atlantic coast using deafening seismic airguns — which will cause senseless harm to thousands of whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals, including endangered species like the North Atlantic right whale.

At the same time, Congress is considering bad legislation that would slash critical protections for majestic ocean wildlife when we need them more than ever. But, there’s also major bipartisan support for strong legislation that would help keep the Atlantic coast off-limits to destructive seismic exploration.

Tell your senators and representative to stand strong against Trump’s giveaway to Big Oil by opposing any attempts to expand seismic oil and gas exploration in the Atlantic — and push for strong legislation to protect our cherished coastline and save whales!

EU: May 2019 – The Biggest ‘Fear’ For Those In Brussels Who Do NOT Listen.

zerissene EU-Flagge am Stock

We have been personally saying on both SAV and WAV sites for many years that the ‘average / normal’ citizen of the EU is basically being ignored by the ‘maters’ (Junker, Tusk etc) when it comes to issues that they have strong feelings about, such as the live transport of animals and the 8 hour rule.

8 hours logo

8 hours was a major campaign across the EU to limit the journey times for animals in transport to a maximum of 8 hours; thereby cutting down on the suffering which is forever being presented to the EU ‘masters’; which is then completely ignored by them.  The Status Quo rules you could say.

Well now, Professor Cedomir Nestorovic of the ESSEC Business School; has said that the EU elections in May 2019 are the biggest ‘fear’ for the EU; as well as Brexit; as there will be a rise in populistic parties all over Europe.  In other words; the normal EU citizen is getting ‘bummed off’ with the dictatorship of Brussels and will this time vote for parties that reflect their views a lot more comer the May elections for Members of the European Parliament (MEP).

bull july 4Affe in MPIc

“I am not really confident that we will have some kind of Europe building capacity in the future as we have in the past.” said the Professor.

He added: “I think the higher fear is the elections in May because for the major part of the European countries, the UK is over, the UK has left the European Union.

The European elections to elect new MEP’s throughout Europe to represent ‘the normal EU citizen’ will take place between May 23 and 26, less than two months after Britain’s exit from the Brussels bloc.

The situations in Italy and France for example represent such problems.  French President Emmanuel Macron and Italy’s deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini are expected to become the symbols of the two sides at the upcoming vote.  Neither of the two leading politicians will actually stand for a seat in the European Parliament elections; but the two political forces have made it clear they will fight for their respective political sides to determine the future of the continent.

The French President (Mr Macron) has been battling in France f9or weeks now to control the so-called “yellow vest” protests which have paralysed parts of France since erupting last month with demonstrators clashing with police, torching cars, erecting roadblocks and burning barricades.  Signals that the ‘normal’ EU citizen is not happy with what is coming from EU governments as well as from Brussels (EU).

The Italian eurosceptics will likely team up with MEPs from (French) Marine Le Pen’s National Rally and (Hungary) Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party, who are also expected to gain votes.

eu uk 4

The UK should not be presenting any MEP’s for election in the May votes; as the UK should have left the EU by this time – the process of ‘Brexit’; which again was introduced in 2016 by British citizens being given the option of remaining or leaving the EU.  Again here; the majority of citizens in the UK voted for Britain to leave the EU; as they felt they were not being listened to; represented or actions taken to support their wishes at the EU in Brussels.

So; the elections in May 2019 will be very interesting throughout Europe.  We at WAV do expect that the ‘common man / woman’ of Europe will have their say at the election booth and that post May; there will be major changes in the make up of the European Parliament.
Junker Tusk.jpg

Junker, Tusk and others have been presented with real evidence for change over the years.  They have decided to ignore it; putting themselves on a higher pillar than the people of the EU.  In May, we envisage that the ‘worm will turn’ and the pillars will come crumbling down.

Who knows; in the post 2019 elections; we may even witness animals being transported throughout the EU for a maximum of 8 hours ! – They were warned that they needed to change the rules; they ignored it; maybe in May they will pay the price !

Russia: Petition – Shut Down Cruel ‘Whale Prison’ off Russian Coast.

Russian federation

SIGN: Shut Down Cruel ‘Whale Prison’ off Russian Coast

Posted by Katie Valentine

Whale prison Russia

PETITION TARGET: Sergey Kislyak, Russian Ambassador to the U.S.

Over 100 whales are illegally confined in appalling conditions in the waters off Russia’s Pacific Coast, in what the local media has appropriately nicknamed a “whale prison.”

Kept in cramped, tiny cages, some of the whales have been unscrupulously sold to Chinese aquariums, in direct violation of an international ban on commercial whale hunting that restricts the sale of these intelligent marine mammals.

In early November, a disturbing video appeared online, showing one of these whales being torturously hoisted by a crane in preparation for transport to an unspecified destination.

Between 2013 and 2016, 13 Orcas were reportedly exported to China by unnamed companies, who sold their helpless victims for as much as $6 million each — quite possibly profiting from China’s booming marine park industry.

Even more disturbingly, evidence shows that some of these cruel cages contain infants, which is illegal under all circumstances.

Petition Link – https://ladyfreethinker.org/sign-shut-cruel-whale-prison-off-russian-coast/

Russia is believed to be the only country in the world that exports wild Orcas, and if nothing is done to stop this, the rate at which they’re being caught and killed will ultimately lead to the species’ demise.

Until recently, the cruel imprisonment of these endangered whales was shrouded in mystery and deceit. It is imperative to race against the clock to ensure the survival of what’s left of these already-threatened species.

Sign this petition urging the Russian Ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak, to do everything in his power to shut down the whale prison and halt all whale trading out of Russia’s waters.
