Dear Mark,

Great news on our Judicial Review of British calf exports. The Scottish Government’s outrageous request for an indefinite delay has been REJECTED!

The Court of Session has, instead, chosen to double the court time available for our case – and the hearing is now expected to take place in October.

The battle against cruelty isn’t over yet, but we’ve secured a first, big victory. A huge thank you to everyone who has backed this campaign so far. If you haven’t already done so, please:

Take action – Call on the Scottish Government to drop their defence of the appalling live export trade.
Donate – 100% of your gift will support Compassion’s work in the UK.
Spread the word to fight live exports, using ciwf.org.uk/JusticeForCalves

Thank you! Together, we will keep up the fight for #JusticeForCalves.

With best wishes,
Nick

STUCK ON A TRUCK

Every year, thousands of unweaned calves are sent from Scotland to fattening farms in Spain. These vulnerable, young ‘by products’ of the dairy industry suffer journeys that are both horrific and, we believe, illegal.

Animal transport law states that unweaned calves cannot travel for more than 8 hours – unless, after a maximum of 9 hours’ transport, they are rested, given water and, “if necessary”, fed.

In reality, the ‘rest’ usually just means the lorry stops moving for an hour. And, because milk substitute can’t in practice be provided on the trucks, calves may go as long as 23 hours without food. They must be stressed, exhausted, and desperately hungry.

Whilst they’re on British farms, these young animals must legally be fed twice a day. Yet the transporters think it’s not ‘necessary’ to feed them until they’re first unloaded in Northern France!

We have always known that live calf transport does not adhere to the EU rules which allegedly ‘protects’ animals in transport.

You can read and see a lot more in relation to this by visiting, and scrolling down at:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-us/

Or,  If you care to click on the following link below you will see a written summary of just 1 of the 5 trails which was undertaken and clearly proved that Irish calves were not being given adequate food and rest at an approved Staging Post facility after they had made the crossing from Ireland to France.

Remember, this (link below) is just 1 of the 5 investigation reports that we produced in our ‘overall’ document of 2010;

and it also lists all the non compliances with the EU Regulation 1/2005 for this specific trail / investigation are given at the end of this specific investigation report.  Remember also that these investigations and reports do not just appear by magic.  Many people, their time, money and several vehicles are often involved – they all take effort and time to record all the exact details which you can see detailed in the report.

Thus, it can be annoying in the least when all this work is undertaken, compiled and presented to the EU, and then they do nothing about it ! – something is wrong somewhere; hence our gripes as detailed in many current posts re live animal transport and the EU ignorance.  This is typical of the work involved to ‘do the trail / investigation job’ properly; and when you do and then get completely ignored at EU level you begin to ask questions about those same people and the EU ‘organisation’ who are supposed to be ‘enforcing’ the ‘animal welfare’ regulations.

What is the basic evil of the meat industry?

Hundreds of new corona cases were registered this week in a slaughterhouse of the Tönnies company in Germany.

toennies7-

At the Tönnies headquarters in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, around 5,300 employees will have to be tested in the next few days.
As a result, all schools and daycare centers in the Gütersloh district were closed again. Around 7,000 people are now in quarantine around the company.

Federal Labor Minister of Germany Hubertus Heil called the situation “shocking”.

For him, one of the main problems in the industry is that work in slaughterhouses is increasingly done with employment contracts and subcontractors, so that workers, most of whom are from Eastern Europe, are “not treated fairly”.

He now wants to end this “basic evil”, said Heil in the state television channel ARD.
But is that it?
The meat industry has other problem areas:

1. Too much manure

Gülle 2pg

More animals also mean more animal excretions.

But where to put the manure? A large part of it ends up in the meadows and fields of farmers – and thus contaminates soil and groundwater with nitrogen.
Agriculture is responsible for around 57 percent of the nitrogen that is released into the environment in Germany, according to the Federal Environment Agency.

Breaking News – Animals Asia – 29/6/20

Vietnam – Bear ‘Cotton Blossom’ Will be rescued tomorrow from her terrible suffering life of bile farming.

Rescue team are finally on their way after earlier preventions due to Covid.

We are hoping to set up a live link to the rescue very soon – and will give details when we can.

Dear Mark,

We’ve finally received the go-ahead to rescue a lonely moon bear in desperate need of love and care. Our emergency response team are on their way right now.

We were first alerted to her plight back in March. But due to the Covid-19 outbreak causing widespread travel restrictions in Vietnam, and this poor bear being held in the border region of Gia Lai province, over 700 miles away from our sanctuary, we couldn’t reach her.

But we didn’t forget. And we’ve been preparing for her arrival ever since. Her house has been cleaned, her bed made and a delicious feast is being prepared for arrival. But that’s not all…

Back in March, the spring sunshine was warming the air, and the magnificent red cotton blossoms were blooming. Though we couldn’t rush to her aid there and then, we remained hopeful that her many years of darkness were coming to an end and she would soon blossom at our life-saving sanctuary. To mark her eventual arrival we planted a Cotton Blossom tree. And in honour of the bear you’ll help us rescue, we’ve named her Cotton Blossom.

Currently, we know precious little about her. What we do know is that she’s been forced to endure painful bile extraction and we can almost be sure that she’ll have serious health issues as a consequence.

She’ll need special ongoing care and treatment for the rest of her life. Which we hope could be another 15 years or more. Hopefully, with enough love and time, all of the pain, anger and fear she feels will fade into distant memories.

In these dark times, will you be the ray of sunshine she’s been waiting for? You can help this sweet girl on the road to recovery and beyond by making a donation today.

Our rescue team plans to arrive tomorrow morning. In the meantime, we’ll do our very best to keep you updated, and I hope to bring you more information soon. For live updates, and to see your kindness in action, please be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

As always, thank you from the bottom of my heart for being there for Asia’s animals when they need you most.

With bear hugs of gratitude and of hope,

Please will you help Cotton Blossom begin her long road to recovery with a healing gift today?

Thank you so much for caring.

Romania is still one of the beautiful, wild places in Europe.  It has a lot of citizens who support the policy of keeping the wild for the wild and letting nature and the animals that live within exist as they should, without persecution from man.

But like all nations; Romania also has a dark side when it comes to animals; especially issues relating to stray dogs, and also live exports of sheep.

As some of you will be aware, we at WAV last year tracked and reported on a consignment of live sheep throughout the journey between Romania and Iran.

It was not only this shipment that has caused us concern. We were also informed at the time that Romania was planning on exporting around 200,000 live sheep to the middle east every month for the next 6 months or so.

“It is clear that sheep have suffered terribly throughout this entire journey, and that’s before we even mention the routine abuse and fully conscious slaughter they are subjected to when they arrive at their destinations,” said Gabriel Paun. “These sheep come from the green meadows and high mountains of the Romanian countryside, and the contrast in how they are treated in the live export trade is unimaginable.”

The Netherlands (Dutch) MEP Anja Hazekamp called on the European Commission to launch an infringement procedure against Romania, after the country authorised the mass transport of 70.000 sheep from the Port of Midia to the Persian Gulf while temperatures rose above 45 °C.

A live export vessel loaded with live sheep for export overturned within hours of leaving the Romanian port of Midia   The Romanian government called off the rescue efforts to save over 14,600 sheep trapped inside a capsized live export ship — despite claims that sounds can be heard indicating that animals are still alive.

In the end, despite many thousands of sheep drowning in the capsize; some (very few) of the survivors which were rescued were eventually provided with sanctuary.

Welcome tour Romanian visitors today – we have noticed a lot of attendance to the site from Romania over the last few days; and we very much welcome you coming to pay us a visit..

So here following we are giving most of our past Romanian links with the hope they will be of use to our visitors if they are working on campaign issues.  We ask them to especially work on the issues of stray dogs and cats; and also on the live export business which involves so many tens of thousands of live sheep.

In memory of all the suffering animals in Romania – past and present.

Netherlands: Dutch MPs have voted to close all mink farms by the end of the year and pay compensation to fur farmers.

niederländischen-flagge

Dutch MPs have voted to close all mink farms by the end of the year and pay compensation to fur farmers

Politicians in the Netherlands have voted in favour of closing the country’s mink farms by the end of the year after several outbreaks of coronavirus led to thousands of the animals being culled.

At least two workers at mink farms in the Netherlands are believed to have been infected with coronavirus in what the World Health Organization said could be the first known cases of animal-to-human transmission of the virus.

Health authorities slaughtered more than 1,500 mink as a precaution this month after coronavirus surfaced in a handful of farms in the southern Netherlands.

The Labour Party and Party for Animals subsequently tabled a vote on banning mink farming, which passed this morning. The motion now has to be approved by the upper house of the Dutch government.

If it passes the new law will hasten the closure of the country’s estimated 128 mink farms, which were due to be phased out by the end of 2023.

The animal rights charity, PETA, described the proposed ban as “common sense” and called on other mink farming nations such as China and Denmark to ban the trade.

“PETA hopes the Netherlands will be the first of many countries to see the writing on the wall and shut down cruel fur farms or risk being the source of the next pandemic,” said the charity’s director, Elisa Allen.

In a statement, Humane Society International urged the Dutch government to pass the motion to ban the country’s mink fur trade: “HSI urges the government to listen to parliament, act now to end cruel and dangerous fur farming for good.”

The Netherlands is not the only country making moves to reduce the trade in animals in the wake of coronavirus. China, where the outbreak began, has since banned the consumption of all wildlife and removed pangolin scales from a list of approved traditional medicines.

Pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world and scientists are investigating whether they may have played a role in the virus moving from animals to humans.

USA: Good riddance Steve King, you won’t be missed!

american-flag-120402148

We are thrilled to share the news that Representative Steve King of Iowa, known in the animal protection world as the “King” of cruelty, has finally been ousted after two decades of toxic leadership!

Since his time in office as Iowa state’s U.S. representative, King took anti-animal positions on virtually every issue.

  • King opposed a federal policy that came in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to help animals in disasters.
  • King opposed federal measures to crack down on horse slaughter.
  • King consistently voted against endangered species protections.
  • King opposed federal measures against dog fighting.

Perhaps King’s most egregious act of all was his proposal of the federal Protect Interstate Commerce Act, which sought to destroy practically every piece of legislation that protects animals on the state level.

In one fell swoop, this disastrous bill threatened hard-won legislation to protect animals suffering in puppy mills, on fur farms, in dog fighting rings, and on factory farms. King repeatedly introduced this bill during multiple congressional sessions and it was defeated only due to the efforts of countless animal protection, environmental, and worker safety groups.

To top it off, King also made statements in support of white supremacy which earned him condemnation from the leaders of his own Republican party. It is unsurprising that a depraved mind that supports animal abuse would be attracted to racist ideas.

Good riddance Steve King, you won’t be missed!

Hunger is not fate, it is man-made.

bild mit hungernden Kindern o

795 million people are starving – but we feed 56 billion farm animals

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) says that in today’s phase of developing its production forces, world agriculture could easily feed twelve billion people normally. So almost twice the world population.
At the same time, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), one billion people are overnourished, that is, massively overweight.

THE REALITY: for the production of only 1 kg of beef are used up to 16 kilos of grain or soybeans and 15,400 liters of water – valuable livelihoods that could feed hungry people.
For comparison: 1,300 liters of water are needed to produce 1 kg of wheat, 255 liters for 1 kg of potatoes, and only 131 liters for 1 kg of carrots.

In industrial livestock farming, food is fed in large quantities – corn, soybeans, and cereals – which the hungry people lack in developing countries.

Large areas are felled or cleared because animals need multiple amounts of feed to “produce” meat or milk. Over 50 percent of the world’s crops are used as animal feed for the livestock of rich countries.

Ernte-Soja-pg

Almost half of the world’s grain harvest and 80 to 90 percent of the soybean harvest go to factory farming.

Due to over-indebtedness, the poor countries are forced to sell high-quality plant food that is necessary for human nutrition as animal feed – even though some of their own population does not have enough to eat.

hunger_Kinder am Hunger jpg

As many as 60 percent of the feed that is fed to industrialized livestock farming in rich countries are imported from developing countries.

In South America, especially Brazil, huge areas of tropical forests are being cleared to grow soy. By the way, the world’s largest buyer of Brazilian soy is Germany – almost exclusively feed for factory farming.

kühen beim essen
Over 80 percent of the soy imported to Germany comes from South America.
This is despite the fact that the poorer population in Latin America does not have enough to eat.

The clearing of the rainforest is not only problematic for the climate. As a result, numerous previously undiscovered plant and animal species lose their habitat and become irretrievably extinct

»If we maintain current nutritional trends, there will not be enough water to produce the food for the nine billion population expected in 2050. Meat consumption must be significantly reduced so that food for the growing world population can be cultivated with the available water and arable land», according to the study by the Stockholm International Water Institute.

https://www.freiheit-fuer-tiere.de/artikel/welthunger-klimakatastrophe-eine-fleischfrage.html

And the UN is silent. For fear of upsetting the almighty transcontinental private companies. According to the World Bank, the largest transcontinental private groups (all sectors combined, industry, finance, services, etc.) controlled 52.8 percent of the world’s gross domestic product last year.

They have a power that no emperor, king or pope has ever had in history.
They influence the foreign policy of even the most powerful countries. The UN rightly fears its anger.

Do we have hope?

In years of argumentation, demonstrations, actions, and undercover investigations, we have been unable to ensure that people decide against these crimes (for people and animals) and that they no longer cooperate with the meat mafia.

It probably took a long time for the animal rights movement to understand that we have to conduct our struggle politically, that means, that the changes we seek should not be left in the hands of a disinterested, indifferent, irresponsible society, but our goal must be the politicians.

We need sharper and more massive practices to crack the wall.
We have to work on it.

My best regards to all, Venus

Do you think that’s bad? Don’t eat it! “

GERMANY-MEAT Kuh abgeköpft

A very good article from ntv

The corona outbreak in a Tönnies slaughter factory in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany,  brought up the pictures that nobody really wants to see.
Animals that just stumbled anxiously over the truck ramp now hang on hooks and bleed from their cutthroats.

The bodies are cut, sorted, and packed on the assembly line. Just as disturbing are the images of people who kill animals for their wages, cut them up, sort innards, and ultimately turn living organisms into cheap food.

_Schlachthof betrieb_65291592
It is literally a  job that hits the bones – psychologically and physically – that takes place in halls where there is hardly any daylight, where animal cries can be heard and which smells of blood and guts.
And it is an open secret in the industry that many workers numb their pain with a lot of alcohol after work.

No, nobody wants to see these pictures.

Blutendes Ferkel_n

And if they do appear, the guilty parties are quickly found: it is either the slaughtering companies – in the current case, Tönnies, because after all the pictures come from there – or politics, after all, the legislature allows something like that.

Neither is completely wrong. By far the most influential factor is YOU, the consumer.
