Over the last few days we have been working Christa at Animals Angels providing data on a variety of issues. All this work relates to our campaign about how the EU is failing animals in transport, and how EU Regulation 1/2005 on the ‘Protection’ of animals during transport is simply not worth the paper it is written on.

We are providing a series of links and data about Animals Angels and we would encourage you to review some of the reports that we have provided links for.

In addition, here are a few links to some of our recent posts relating to live animal transport within, and from, the EU. We hope that the information provided by both ourselves and Animals Angels will give you ‘conversation room’ should you get anyone at your door asking for political party votes at the European Elections.

The Conference of Agriculture Ministers met in Landau from 10 to 12 April.

However, the desired outcome was not achieved: Long distance animal transports from Germany to non-EU countries will be continued.

All of the following relates to Animals Angels:

Our Organisation

Animals’ Angels is an animal welfare organisation based in Frankfurt, Germany. Our commitment is to the so-called ‘farm’ animals, focusing on the protection of animals during transport. Among other things, we demand the abolition of long-distance animal transports. Until then, we want to achieve that animal transports at least comply with existing legislation.

EU Live Exports: Conference of Agriculture Ministers Yields Frustrating Result: Long Distance Animal Transports Will Continue

15-04-2019 Animal Transports EU Live Exports Created by Animals’ Angels e. V.

The Conference of Agriculture Ministers met in Landau from 10 to 12 April. However, the desired outcome was not achieved: Long distance animal transports from Germany to non-EU countries will be continued. There will not be a nationwide export stop  – despite overwhelming proof that these transports to countries such as Morocco or Uzbekistan are contrary to animal welfare. Sadly, this was not to be expected otherwise. The business with ‘breeding’ animals is simply too big.

Instead of banning the export of live animals, the federal government wants to support the states with a central database and thus improve animal protection. A digital platform will be used in future to check for infringements of animal welfare and the plausibility of journey logs. What this means for the animals remains questionable, however. After all, there is already enough evidence that it is not possible to transport animals to non-EU countries in conformity with the law.

Animals’ Angels continues to put pressure on politicians and authorities to ensure that the current debate will not just fall silent after the conference. And we will continue to be there with the animals and continue to confront those who are responsible with the results of our investigations.

Animal Transports in the EU

In the EU alone, around 3.8 million animals are transported every day.

That is 1.4 billion animals a year. In the transport business, as in all branches of industry, money is at stake. Animals are transported where the highest profits are expected. All too often these transports take place under cruel conditions. The longer the transport lasts, the more the animals suffer.

Are farmers victims?

“Murderers”, “animal torturers”, “exploiters”, “criminals”, “you should be slaughtered” – farmers who keep livestock are confronted with hate mailings on Facebook. This is shown by a study by the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.

österreichische Flagge

This is problematic because of the growing pressure on farmers to increasingly engage with consumers in direct dialogue, the university said in a release.

According to study author Christian Dürnberger from the Ethics of Human-Animal Relations Department of the Messerli Research Institute of Vetmeduni, farmers who present their work in social networks are accused of “forcing and rape cows”.

künstliche besammungjpg

Again and again there are Holocaust comparisons and personal criticisms, insults or threats, even to their children. Literal citations are, for example, “Your children should also be fried” or “Your children should die of cancer”!

kuh im Stall angekettet

The study, published in the journal “International Journal of Livestock Production”, sees this as problematic because farmers are increasingly being challenged to find new ways of communicating, especially in the sense of a more direct dialogue with consumers and citizens.

He has therefore raised the motives of farmers for their presence on Facebook. Not only economic interests were at the center, but the farmers are also concerned with basic information and dialogue on agriculture and livestock farming in order to increase their knowledge of agricultural practice!!

kuh im Dreck, gestorbenjpg

However, Dürnberger sees the understanding of dialogue that emerges as “not unproblematic”: because this usually means less an exchange at eye level between different actors, but rather an instruction of laymenthe citizensby experts – the farmers. “It is questionable to what extent such an understanding of dialogue is sufficient to deal adequately with critical inquiries in social networks,” says Dürnberger.

https://diepresse.com/home/panorama/oesterreich/5623405/Moerder-Tierquaeler_Bauern-als-Opfer-von-Hasspostings

My comment:  So I propose a rescue operation for the farmers: they take over the role of the animals:

which they rape
which they hold in dark stables for life
which they separate from their children when they are born,
which they do not treat when they get sick and old,
which they send as little babies in the transports ….

On this way, the farmers will not be the victims anymore!

Farmers Liberation!

If farmers feel that the “Shitstorm” is based on false facts, then they would not mind a role reversal.

My best regards to all, Venus

END CRUEL AND ILLEGAL EU LIVE ANIMAL EXPORTS
Posted by Libby Kann

Petition 2

Petition Link – https://ladyfreethinker.org/sign-end-cruel-and-illegal-eu-live-animal-exports/?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email

PETITION TARGET: European Parliament President Antonio Tajani

Each year, more than three million animals from the EU are forced to endure the horrific journey of live animal export, matted and suffocating in their own faeces for weeks, to then be gruesomely slaughtered in countries with little to no animal welfare laws including the Middle East, North Africa, and Singapore.

The EU must end this cruel practice; and shockingly, they’ve already banned it — they just blatantly ignore the law.

SIGN: End Cruel and Illegal EU Live Animal Exports

In an appalling display of complete disregard for animal protection and public trust, the EU has consistently violated this law for nearly 15 years.

In fact, the EU banned live animal exports in 2005 to countries that do not meet European animal welfare standards for handling, transport, and slaughter. But the law is largely brushed aside. The European Parliament has discussed finally enforcing it, first in 2012 and again in 2019. However, some members are still voting against the enforcement of laws protecting animals from the gruesome live export trade.

The situation is so dire, “Not one of the importing countries currently taking animals from Europe meets the EU’s standards for animal welfare,” according to Animals Australia.

Photographer Roee Shprenick stated, “Calves for meat from Portugal arrived at Ashdod port in Israel after being stuck at sea for 26 days, covered in feces and some blinded by the ammonia fumes.”

This inhumane and illegal suffering must end.
Sign this petition to urge the European Parliament to finally enforce their own laws and end cruel live animal exports.

Mexico: Female Bullfighter Gored in the Face – Karma and all that.

mexico

A female bullfighter was gored in the face while staring down the massive animal on her knees, leaving her with gaping wounds as she was carried out of the ring.

Bullfighter Hilda Tenorio suffered serious facial injuries and was rushed to hospital covered in blood after being severely gored for the second time in her career.

The 32-year-old Mexican matador received emergency medical attention at the scene before being taken to hospital for an hours-long operation to mend a broken jaw.

Footage of the dramatic moment she was knocked to the ground shows the half-ton bull, called ‘Querido Viejo’, which in English would translate as ‘My Dear Old Friend’, charging her before onlookers rush to help her.

Ms Tenorio was facing down the bull on her knees when it trampled over her in the city of Puebla on Sunday.

Graphic photos show her face covered in blood as she is carried out of the ring.

She is later seen sat upright on a gurney in the back of an ambulance.

After the operation, she wrote to her fans on social media: “I want to thank you all for your messages of support.

“My injuries are very serious and I have not been able to sleep all night, sat up in bed because there was no other option.

“The doctors have said my upper jaw is broken and my cheeks are fractured from my eye socket.”

Mexican media have said she is expected to have to take a six-month rest from bullfighting as they condemned the sport.

Bullfighting opponents and animal rights activists showed no sympathy for her.

EU: MEP’s Have Their Say In the Hundreds, But In The End; If Commissioner Says NO, Then No It is.

GREECE/

The following is produced in relation to the EU elections which will take place on 23-26 May 2019. They are for Members of the European Parliament (MEP), not for the Commissioners, who are not elected by the democratic system. The government of each member state of the EU nominates a member for the Commission, but cannot later give them any orders or remove them from their post. The members of the Commission are supposedly positioned to act in the interest of the European Union as a whole, and not their home country.

Thus, electing MEP’s with your vote in May really does not change anything. MEP’s have NO power to remove a Commissioner – and the Commissioner is ultimately the SINGLE person who has the FINAL SAY regardless of decisions and votes taken in the European Parliament.

So is there any point in ‘EU man and woman’ really having a vote when the EU system works like this ? – we see it simply as a veil for the EU establishment to give the EU citizen he is making a difference, when the reality is the decisions are made by the Commissioners who are un elected and cannot be removed ! – a fair system ? – what do you think ?

So the EU Parliament of hundreds of members can vote for animal transport times to be reduced; but if the Commissioner says NO, then No it is.

Remember this when you are asked to give your vote at the EU elections in May. Does your vote for MEP’s only really mean anything ? – we suggest you ask the sole decision making Commissioners.

—————————————————

Every year millions of animals are transported live from the EU for slaughter in the Middle East and North Africa. The journeys last hundreds of hours and they face brutal treatment on arrival at their final destination.

Every year, over three million animals are exported from the European Union to NON-EU countries. Hundreds of thousands are destined for countries such as Russia, Turkey, The Middle East and North Africa. Investigations have uncovered animals being exported live for brutal slaughter in countries across the Middle East, and even as far away as Singapore.

Despite these countries having no laws that protect animals from brutal treatment, and though the European Commission and livestock exporting Member States have long been made fully aware of the extreme cruelty such animals are being subjected to, both have been actively seeking to increase the export of EU animals.

Image result for live animal transport suffering

In 2015 the European livestock export value increased 25,2% compared to 2014, and increased further in 2016. In the first nine months of 2016 EU export of live animals increased to 17,2 % in comparison to the same period in 2015.

A 5 year study carried out between 2010-2015 by Eyes on Animals and TSB/AWF demonstrated 70% of live export trucks inspected at the (EU) Bulgarian border (a major exit point for EU animals) were breaching the EU Transport Regulation. The team found animals, such as sheep, starving, without water, parked in direct sunlight, and waiting 5 days before continuing their journey. Packed tightly together, young lambs were trampled to death while the elders were left standing on their carcasses.

These horrifically long journeys must be stopped once and for all and replaced by a trade in frozen or refrigerated meat. When European animals are exported outside of the EU, they can suffer squalid housing, brutal handling, torturous restraint systems, and slow, painful slaughter. But we have shown with investigations for many years that animals being transported within the EU also suffer terribly.

Image result for live animal transport suffering

Barbaric slaughtering methods.

Investigations continually provide evidence that the slaughtering of animals being sold from the EU to Third Countries is barbaric. The footage captured on the slaughtering routines these importing countries are using are in full breach of international standards. Such routines include terrifying fully conscious very large bulls by painfully dragging them up off the floor by one of their rear legs, and slashing their throat several times before they die in Turkish slaughterhouses.

Similar footage shows partial hoisting of fully conscious cattle in Lebanese slaughterhouses and their torture with electric prods before their throats are slashed. There is evidence as well of petrified European animals being brutally restrained by ropes before having their throats hacked whilst fully conscious in the Palestinian territories and Egypt. Furthermore, the extended suffering of European animals has been caught on camera showing how full inversion slaughter boxes are used in Turkey, Ramallah and Egypt. In addition, the brutal handling and slaughtering of Portuguese and Romanian sheep was documented in the Palestinian territories and Jordan.

Under EU Regulation 1/2005, animals are being exported by European countries to Non EU nations without any consideration as to whether the importing countries’ infrastructure, handling and slaughter practices comply with basic international standards. Even if the majority of abattoirs in importing countries have no capacity or understanding to handle or slaughter animals humanely, no EU regulation ought to allow the animal cruelty that is occurring. Further still, the fact that so many importing countries lack even the most basic hygiene protocols means the resulting meat is in fact unfit for human consumption in the EU.

Some MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) are in favour of improving conditions for animals in transport and have voted to impose an overall limit on journey times. In its last sitting the European Parliament voted in favour of a limit to journey times, but the European Commission failed to support this change, resulting in no change in the law.

So, we can say with confidence that the European Commission is failing all animals that are transported both within, and to nations outside of the European Union.

The EU Commissioner responsible for failures is one:

Image result for phil hogan eu

Philp Hogan (born 4 July 1960) an Irish Fine Gael politician, and climate change sceptic, who has served as European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development since November 2014. Can a Commissioner be removed by the EU ? – No. The government of each member state (in this case Ireland) nominates a member for the Commission, but cannot later give them any orders or remove them from their post. The members of the Commission are to act in the interest of the European Union as a whole, not their home country. We question this as Ireland has recently been setting up live export deals with non-EU destinations such as: Lebanon; Morocco; Russia; Rwanda and Tunisia.

https://www.agriland.ie/farming-news/analysis-the-irish-live-cattle-export-market-in-2018/

Ireland exported 246,000 live animals in 2018, according to the IFA. The majority were calves and weanlings going to Spain and the Netherlands. The IFA wants to double live export numbers in 2019, and gain more access to markets in Turkey and North Africa.

The question is – has Commissioner Hogan been a voice for the Irish agriculture industry rather than addressing issues within the EU such as live animal transport ?

A Commissioner’s basic monthly salary is fixed at 112.5% of the top civil service grade. This works out at €22,367.04 per month.

In 2015 the Court of Justice judged – Zuchtvieh arrest – that the Transport Regulation 1/2005’s provisions not only apply to the EU but rather to the entire journey of transporting European animals outside the EU until their final destination, still in Third countries there are not facilities to unload, feed, water, rest animals and to provide them with basic care. And yet the trade continues and so does the suffering, in complete disregard of the highest Court’s Jurisprudence.

Image result for live animal transport suffering

Within Europe, animals are SUPPOSED to be protected by EU Regulation 1/2005, – ‘the protection of live animals during transport and related operations’; but live animals in transport are routinely failed by this legislation.

The way in which the trade of live animals is currently carried out in the EU is in clear breach of Article 13 of the Treaty on the Function of the EU (TFEU), which is a requirement to “pay full regard to” animal welfare in formulating and implementing EU agriculture policy. In addition, by facilitating and supplying live EU animals to countries that are consistently failing to meet standards of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) – the EU Commission is undermining the work of the OIE to improve animal welfare standards. Compliance with OIE standards is intended to form the basis of trade agreements between countries.

Yet another ‘animal issue’ that the EU wants to wipe it hands of.

Prior to the EU Elections In Late May 2019; We Will Be Exposing EU Animal ‘Welfare’ Failures By A System Which Does Not Care.

JC Drunker 1

5/5/19 – Today Venus and I have discussed Serbia and the EU Parliamentary elections which will take place between 23-26/5/19. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/unitedkingdom/en/european-elections/european_elections.html

We will be publishing more on the EU and its failures for animal welfare in the coming weeks. We will also link in to Serbia’s wish to become an EU member state; but at the moment I would like you to see and read Venus’s excellent post on Serbia which she published a few days ago – https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2019/05/04/serbia-land-of-collective-animal-torment/

We have experience with Serbia and animal ‘welfare’ going back to 2005 when we formed ‘Serbian Animals Voice’ (SAV. Here is the link to SAV and the specific ‘Serbian’ sector – https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/category/serbia-central-serbia-capital-belgrade-and-serbiavojvodina-capital-novi-sad/

Here is the link to Serbian animals and the failures by the Serbian government to enforce it own legislation – https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-serbian-animals/

Officially, to become an EU member state, any nation wishing to join the EU must show (under the Copenhagen Agreement) that it IS enforcing its own national ‘Rules of Law’. Serbia does not do this with animal welfare; thus we consider that Serbia should NOT be allowed to join the EU, as it is non-compliant. More on this about the law in the link https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-serbian-animals/

But we all know that existing EU member states such as Romania are not enforcing EU legislation anyway. Despite numerous reports and visits by MEP’s to Romania to document their terrible animal welfare status, the EU simply walks away from the data. It is the same with EU wide live animal transport legislation; the EU simply does not accept any of the hard evidence presented to them showing that EU rules on live animal transport are NOT being enforced.

J C Drunker 3

We will go deeper into these issues over the next few weeks, before the EU elections; where ‘EU citizens’ supposedly have their vote on the EU system and the people (MEP’s) that represent them. We know from bee killing pesticides through to animal transport, the voice of the ‘EU man’ is not really listened to; but the voice of lobbyists for the ‘Mafia’s’ which seem to run the EU are always listened to. They have the money to lobby to get what they want; so they always win.

For now, I leave you with a few more links and videos for your review; which shows the ‘EU system’ for animals and their ‘welfare’ does not work:

Mulesing: an animal torture for the wool industry

Australia

What is it about?
It is again about torture, suffering and economic crime in the name of profit.

It’s about surgical intervention on sheeps without the use of painkillers or narcotics in Australia.

We have to stop that.

merino Schafpg

It was documented by a film crew producing 90 percent of the merino wool for our clothing. On several sheep farms, activists have found out that the first weeks of life of a lamb are determined by painful interventions that are usually performed without anesthetic: they cut off the tail, castrate male offspring, and then comes the “Mulesing” to protect the animals of the fly maggots.
The cries of lambs who have to undergo these procedures without painkillers are heartbreaking.

At 88 percent, Australia is the largest producer of fine merino wool worldwide. Around 90 percent of the 74 million merino sheep living there are undergoing “mulesing”.

What is mulesing?

The Merinos were bred to get wrinkled skin, so the wool yield per animal is even greater, which increases the profit per animal. It is clear: on much skin surface grows a lot of fine, soft wool. And that brings money!

Because of the unnatural abundance of wool, many sheep die of heat stroke in the hot months. Humidity and urine accumulate in the skin folds, attracting flies that deposit their eggs in the skin folds. The larvae hatched a little later can eat the sheep from the inside alive. In order to avoid the loss of sheep due to this “fly infestation”, the Australian rancher performs the “mulesing” (named after the inventor of the method, John Mules).

schafe-mulesing3

In this barbaric mulesing, the lambs are thrown on their backs with force and their legs are fixed between metal bars.

Then they cut them – often with a simple pruning shears and without anesthesia – large plates of meat from the area around their tail, around the anus and (in women) around the vulva (no one would come up with the idea of a toddler even just a few square centimeters of skin cut out without anesthetic).

mulesingjpg

The aim of this cruel procedure is to create a smooth, scarred surface that eliminates the need for fly eggs. Often, however, the opposite is achieved because it is these large, bloody wounds that are often attacked by flies, even before they can heal.

Schafe-Wolle-Merino -Australien-PETA-USA

The solution:

We call for an immediate ban on all operations on sheep without the use of painkillers or narcotics.

In addition, the government must oblige the wool industry to set a new date for an end to mulesing.
Because in order to abolish the mulesing, there is only one solution in the long run: Merino sheep must be bred, which are less wrinkled and have weak wool growth in the tail and anal area.

merinoschaft-100~1280x720
That works, but has not been effectively promoted in recent years.

There was even an ultimatum that the Australian wool producers themselves had set: In response to pressure from animal welfare organizations, Australian farmers agreed in 2004 to cease “mulesing” by 2010. However, a few years later, the industry has given up plans to quit mulesing, and animal suffering continues unabatedWe want to change that now!

We need votes for that

In May 2019, a new government will be elected in Australia. If we get thousands of signatures together, we can pass this petition in summer in the presence of national and international press to the key politicians right in Australia and put real pressure on it.

Help us to stop mulesing and other operations on sheep without painkillers or narcotics in Australia!

We do not want sheep to suffer for wool! We need your vote!

Please support us with your signature and follow our initiative # nopain4sheep on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

https://secure.avaaz.org/de/community_petitions/Minister_f_Hilf_den_Laemmchen_kein_Leiden_mehr_fuer_Merinowolle/details

the Petition Letter:

Dear Ministers of Agriculture of the Australian State,

with dismay I had to learn that the Australian wool industry has still failed to enforce pain-free alternatives for the mulesing of Merino sheep, such as breeding less wrinkled sheep, which makes mulesing redundant. In addition, mulesing and other surgical procedures such as clutching and castration are still performed on the majority of farms without pain relief management.
Please take action to change the practice of these painful and cruel operations. We don’t want sheep to suffer for wool.
We urge you, as the Australian State Agriculture Ministers in charge, to set new legislation standards: A new deadline to end mulesing in Australia and an immediate ban of all operations on sheep without the administration of pain relief.
Please don’t disappoint our confidence in Australian government and wool growers: We don´t want to wear the wool from screaming sheep on our skin.
We want wool without suffering and pain!

Yours sincerely,

My comment: “Even if sheep do not show their pain, they suffer,” says a Swiss veterinary physician.
“Sheep as mammals have the same pain sensations as humans, so the two large wounds, which are after cutting away the two large skin flaps on the thigh, are very painful. It hurts very much, both at the moment of cutting, but also in the long term, when the wound Healed and often inflamed and swollen, which is sure to cause long-term pain”, he said

Of course, Australian animal tormentors can understand what it’s like to be operated on without anesthetic.
If they experience such cruelty themselves, they will not set a deadline for the abolition of mulesing, it’s tomorrow over!

My best regards, Venus

Sick and Deformed Baby Birds

New Zealand Chicken Meat Industry Cruelty Exposed

At just five weeks of age, she stands with difficulty. Although still cheeping like a little chick, her adult-sized body is in so much pain, with swollen feet and legs which barely hold her up. Her skin is red-raw from lying in the ammonia-soaked litter. Around her are the bodies of other chicks who have died of heart failure – their bodies unable to cope with the unnatural growth rate. Tomorrow those who can no longer walk will be culled.

She wants to go outside, to breathe the fresh air, feel the sun on her back and the earth under her feet. But the so-called “pop-holes” to the outside are far away, there are thousands of other birds in the way and her legs hurt so terribly under the weight of her overgrown body.

The only time she will get outside is next week when the truck arrives. She and those around her who are still alive will be picked up, shoved into crates and taken for slaughter.

She is a free-range chicken.

Baby birds, bred to suffer

Chicken Meat Industry Cruelty Exposed

Confronting footage of an Auckland chicken farm shows dead and dying chickens. As previous investigations have shown, these scenes are replicated across New Zealand inside the industrial sheds where chickens are bred for meat.

The sick and deformed (SAD) chickens in the footage are just five weeks old, but because of selective breeding, they are already the size of adult chickens. The chicks struggle to stand up because of the size of their abnormal bodies. They are so top-heavy, that they can get stuck on their backs, and are left to struggle desperately trying to get back up.

The chicken industry’s own figures show that thousands of birds die every day of heart failure and other health problems, even before they reach the slaughter age of six weeks. Almost a third suffer from painful lameness. When their legs fail, they may be unable to reach food and water.

Life as a chicken used for meat

Around 120 million chickens were slaughtered for meat in New Zealand in 2017. Four out of every five land animals killed for meat in NZ are chickens.

These birds (often referred to by the poultry industry as ‘broilers’) have been selectively bred for their meat, rather than eggs. They are completely separate breeds from those used for egg laying.

The majority are housed in large, windowless sheds holding around 40,000 birds. The floor covering (litter) is only changed when the birds are removed for slaughter at around six weeks. This causes urine and faeces to build up in the litter, resulting in high ammonia levels in the air and burns to the soles of the chickens’ feet and ankle joints (hocks).

Birds are packed closely together, especially in their last weeks, and have little space to move. The legal maximum stocking density is 38kg per square metre, (which equates to 19 birds per square meter), giving each bird a floor area of less than the size of an A4 sheet of paper.

As the birds grow, conditions deteriorate and the sheds become increasingly overcrowded. They must constantly compete to reach food and water supplies. Antibiotics are routinely fed in an attempt to prevent diseases that can spread in these poor conditions.

Bred to Suffer

In NZ, nearly all farmers breed Cobb and Ross chickens, both of which have been selectively bred over many generations to put on weight very quickly. They double in size every week, reaching the desired slaughter weight of about 2.5kg at only about six weeks of age. Chickens would normally take six months to fully mature.

Horrifyingly, the net effect of this fast growth is that the industry has made a breed of bird that has severe health problems and is a ‘non-survivor’. This means that if any of these birds were fortunate enough to be rescued and allowed to live naturally, they usually would not survive past one-year-old due to their poor genetic disposition.

The abuse of female reproductive systems is the lynchpin of animal use by humans

The institutional abuse of female reproductive systems is critical to sustaining all current human use of animals.  Not only does abusing the reproductive systems of female animals maintain a constant supply of animals for human use, females also often have additional roles relating to their reproductive systems which result in prolonged pain and suffering.
