The Amazon rainforest is on fire. Millions of acres of indigenous territory across Brazil are burning, releasing enormous amounts of stored carbon into the atmosphere. This is what the climate crisis looks like: Our planet’s largest and most important rainforest going up in smoke.

Amazon Frontlines has joined forces with our indigenous allies in Brazil and is raising funds for the Indigenous Confederation of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB). All funds raised will support the frontline brigades now fighting these fires, and help them build political and technical capacity to continue protecting the forest in the future.

The fires now raging across the Amazon are not natural. They are part of a political crisis in which the governments of the region, most notably that of Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, has enabled the wanton destruction of formerly protected areas, including hundreds of indigneous lands. For years, indigenous groups in Brazil have been trying to warn the world that they cannot hold off the devastation alone. Too often, their voices have been silenced, just as the Amazon is being silenced now.

Let’s turn this disaster into hope, lets change this into action, and let’s work towards the future together. Let’s pray for the Amazon, but also fight for it.

Amazon fires: ‘Our house is burning’, Macron warns ahead of G7

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-49443389

French President Emmanuel Macron has said the record number of fires in the Amazon rainforest is an “international crisis” that needs to top the agenda at this weekend’s G7 summit.

“Our house is burning,” he tweeted.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro responded by accusing Mr Macron of using the issue for “political gain”.

He said calls to discuss the fires at the G7 summit in Biarritz, which Brazil is not participating in, evoke “a misplaced colonialist mindset”.

The largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is a vital carbon store that slows down the pace of global warming.

Satellite data published by the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) has shown an increase of 85% this year in fires across Brazil, most of them in the Amazon region.

Conservationists have blamed Mr Bolsonaro’s government for the Amazon’s plight, saying that he has encouraged loggers and farmers to clear the land.

Mr Bolsonaro has suggested that non-governmental organisations started the fires, but admitted he had no evidence for this claim. In comments on Thursday, he acknowledged that farmers might be involved in setting fires in the region, according to Reuters news agency.

Environmental groups have called for protests in cities across Brazil on Friday to demand action to combat the fires.

Mr Bolsonaro responded by accusing the French president of using a Brazilian domestic issue for “personal political gain”.

He said he was open to dialogue about the fires if it was “based on objective data and mutual respect”, but hit out at the calls for it to be discussed at the G7 summit.

“The French president’s suggestion that Amazonian issues be discussed at the G7 without the participation of the countries of the region evokes a misplaced colonialist mindset, which does not belong in the 21st century,” he wrote on social media.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also said he is “deeply concerned” about the fires in the Amazon.

“In the midst of the global climate crisis, we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon must be protected,” he tweeted.

A new level of dismissal

Analysis by Daniel Gallas, BBC News, Sao Paulo

Brazilian presidents shrugging off international concern about the Amazon is nothing new.

Others before Mr Bolsonaro have dismissed international NGOs and European leaders as foreign meddlers into national affairs.

But Mr Bolsonaro has taken this to a new level by suggesting NGOs may be responsible for encouraging wildfires to sabotage him.

Image result for amazon on fire

His words may shock some international audiences, but they ring true to his supporters at home, where he remains a popular leader.

Surprisingly the one reproving voice that could influence this debate is that of Brazilian farmers.

One would think that they would support policies to promote more farming in the Amazon. But some agricultural leaders fear Mr Bolsonaro’s poor handling of Brazil’s image abroad could hurt exports of soybeans and beef.

Some farmers have already urged a change of tone from the government. These are voices the president may be open to hearing.

How has Bolsonaro reacted to the fires?

Image result for Mr Bolsonaro

Mr Bolsonaro has said that the country is not equipped to fight the fires. “The Amazon is bigger than Europe, how will you fight criminal fires in such an area?,” he asked reporters as he left the presidential residence on Thursday. “We do not have the resources for that.”

The president has suggested that NGOs may have started fires as revenge for his government slashing their funding.

Asked on Thursday who was responsible, he said: “The Indians, do you want me to blame the Indians? Do you want me to blame the Martians?… Everyone is a suspect, but the biggest suspects are NGOs.”

When asked if there was any proof of this, he replied: “Did I accuse NGOs directly? I just said I suspect them.”

Mr Bolsonaro has further angered those concerned over the spike in fires by brushing off the data.

He argued that it was the season of the “queimada”, when farmers burn land to clear it before planting. However, Inpe has noted that the number of fires is not in line with those normally reported during the dry season.

It is not the first time that Mr Bolsonaro has cast doubt on figures suggesting that the Amazon is deteriorating rapidly.

Last month, he accused Inpe’s director of lying about the scale of deforestation there. It came after Inpe published data showing an 88% increase in deforestation in the Amazon in June compared with the same month a year ago.

The director of the agency later announced that he was being sacked amid the row.

Chart showing the number of fires in Brazil each year

Why is he being criticised?

Climate activists and conservationists have been scathing about the Bolsonaro government and its policies, which favour development over conservation.

They say that since President Bolsonaro took office, the Amazon rainforest has suffered losses at an accelerated rate.

Their anger was further fuelled by satellite data showing a steep rise in fires in the Amazon region this year.

The figures suggest there have been more than 75,000 fires so far this year for the whole of Brazil, compared with just over 40,000 over the same period in 2018.

Image result for amazon on fire

The figures and satellite images showing most of the state of Roraima, in northern Brazil, covered by smoke have shocked many Brazilians and triggered a global Twitter trend under the hashtag #prayforamazonia

As well as a fifth of the world’s oxygen, the region also produces about 20% of the world’s fresh water, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The Amazon is also home to about three million species of plants and animals, and one million indigenous people.

What causes the fires?

Wildfires often occur in the dry season in Brazil but they are also deliberately started in efforts to illegally deforest land for cattle ranching.

“The dry season creates the favourable conditions for the use and spread of fire, but starting a fire is the work of humans, either deliberately or by accident,” Inpe researcher Alberto Setzer told Reuters news agency.

Ricardo Mello, head of the WWF Amazon Programme, said the fires were “a consequence of the increase in deforestation seen in recent figures.

USA: Suit Takes On Trump’s Gutting of the Endangered Species Act.

End earth august

Suit Takes On Trump’s Gutting of the Endangered Species Act

The fight is on.

The Center for Biological Diversity and allies sued the Trump administration Wednesday for its unprecedented attack on the Endangered Species Act.

President Trump’s lethal new rules will have a profound effect on the future of endangered species, making it harder to protect their critical habitat and denying protection to animals and plants newly listed as “threatened.” The rules will increase hunting, trapping and killing. They’ll accelerate logging, drilling and mining of key habitat.

We’ll do everything in our power to overturn these scorched-earth rules. The future of bears, wolves, sea turtles and hundreds of other species depends on it. Read more at USA TODAY and consider donating to our Endangered Species Act Protection Fund.

Are You Ready to Mobilize for the Wild?

If we’re going to defeat President Trump’s attack on the Endangered Species Act, we need to show massive grassroots support for the creatures it saves. That’s where you come in.

Join the Center’s Executive Director Kierán Suckling and our top organizing staff this Tuesday, Aug. 27, on a national call to learn what’s at stake and how we can stop the Trump bulldozer in its tracks. This is a do-or-die moment for the Endangered Species Act. Call in to our “Mobilize for the Wild” meeting, and we’ll plug you into this important campaign.

RSVP for the Aug. 27 call.

Courtroom Roundup: Taking on Trump

In addition to suing Trump over his vicious assault on the Endangered Species Act itself, this week the Center filed several suits against his administration to defend wildlife: orcas, corals and bees.

We sued the National Marine Fisheries Service for ignoring a legal petition to protect critically endangered Southern Resident killer whales from ship traffic that interferes with their feeding in the heart of their Salish Sea foraging habitat. The suit follows news that three more of these starving orcas are presumed dead, leaving their number at 73.

We also sued the Fisheries Service for failing to protect 12 coral species around Florida and islands in the Pacific Ocean. These corals received Endangered Species Act protection in 2014, but not the critical habitat protection they need to recover, which the law requires. About 30 percent of the world’s corals have been lost, and scientists say the rest could be gone by the end of the century. We can’t wait any longer to save them.

Last but not least, we sued Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency over its approval of the bee-killing pesticide sulfoxaflor for use on 200 million acres of crops. The EPA made this approval despite the fact that its own scientists concluded sulfoxaflor is “very highly toxic” to bees.

This brings our Trump lawsuit count to 158

On August 12, the Trump administration announced significant and potentially devastating changes to the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Leading up to the changes, the US Fish and Wildlife Service invited public feedback, but went ahead in spite of receiving more than 800,000 public comments and letters signed by a variety of U.S. representatives and senators. Ten states and more than 30 tribal nations also publicly opposed the changes.

Within hours of the announcement, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra both announced plans to sue.

“By gutting key components of the Endangered Species Act, one of our country’s most successful environmental laws, the Trump Administration is putting our most imperiled species and our vibrant local tourism and recreation industries at risk,” Healey said in a statement. “We will be taking the Administration to court to defend federal law and protect our rare animals, plants, and the environment.”

Many other conservationists, organizations, and political and public figures are expected to join the fight against the changes.

“This decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) eliminates many essential conservation tools that have protected imperiled species and their habitats for decades,” said Cathy Liss, president of the Animal Welfare Institute. “With this drastic revision of core components of the ESA, the current administration is favoring industry at the expense of vulnerable wildlife.”

What are the changes?

  • Historically, threatened species have received the same levels of protection as endangered species. If the changes go ahead next month as expected, these protections will be significantly weakened.
  • Previously, economic factors couldn’t be disclosed or considered as part of the decision to protect a species. With the forthcoming changes, the cost of preserving a species becomes part of the equation.
  • Under the existing ESA, land that vulnerable species historically occupied or might require in the future is protected. Now, these areas may be opened up to development, or industries such as mining.
  • Climate change will become less relevant. Previously, animals such as the polar bear have been protected due to predictions regarding the loss of sea ice thanks to global warming. Now, officials call this kind of scientific modeling “unpredictable.”

“They’re trying to make it difficult, if not impossible, to protect unoccupied habitat,” said Rebecca Riley, legal director for nature programs at the Natural Resources Defense Council. “We know climate change is going to force animals to move to new habitats.”

About the Endangered Species Act

The ESA was instigated in 1973 and is responsible for preventing the extinction of 99 percent of the 1650 species it has protected.

The bald eagle, California condor, humpback whale, grizzly bear, and American alligator are still around today thanks to this act.

In May this year, the United Nations released a report on world biodiversity, stating that one million plant and animal species are on the brink of extinction. Their survival is our survival; the earth is at breaking point, and these changes to the ESA are nothing short of criminal.

We applaud the organizations and individuals who are determined to fight for our environment and we will do everything in our power to support them.

Climate crisis: Stop eating meat

“But humans have eaten animals before,” is a popular argument. True, he has also shitting in the woods and sat naked by the fire. Apparently, change is possible – and there are good arguments for the move to meat-free life.

Fleisch-frisch geschlachtete Kühejpg

Meat is currently on everyone’s lips – not only as food, but also as a topic of controversy. Because already since 2013, when the Bild newspaper (Germany) falsely called an article “The Greens want to ban our meat!” called, the German average citizen is in turmoil!! The propaganda in the sense of meat lobby showed effect.

klimawandel-hängende SchweineThe word “meat production” already shows how alienated man is from his food and the misery associated with it.

The lie made sure that the VeggieDay” – which demanded only a larger selection of vegetarian alternatives in canteens and canteens on Thursday – fell into disrepute at that time and only occasionally prevailed. But since Pope girl Greta made climate change fit for the masses, more and more demands are being made and these are becoming increasingly radical.

Meat renunciation in the fight against climate change

So politicians and animal rights activists want to increase the value added tax on meat from nine to 17 percent in order to invest the profit in better livestock conditions and to reduce meat consumption. The World Climate Council also recently issued a warning to turn around meat consumption in the fight against climate change.

Although the number of vegetarians has increased in recent years to four percent, the per capita consumption of dead animals has hardly fallen. “Obviously, another part of the population has increased meat consumption in parallel,” says the meat atlas of 2018.

Schweine beine verpacktnThe Germans eat over twelve billion animals per year, including numerous pig carcasses.

Despite climate change: so much meat does the German eat

According to calculations by the Vegetarian Federation, every German in his or her life eats an average of around 1094 killed land animals. Fish and marine animals do not even appear in this bill:

four cows or calves
four sheep
twelve geese
37 ducks
46 turkeys
46 pigs
945 chickens

But this eating behavior of the average German contributes actively to climate change. Because one causes with his/her current lifestyle, an output of about 11.6 tonnes of CO2 per year – as the figures of the climate computer from the Federal Environmental Agency. Of these, 1.74 tonnes are for food and 0.45 tonnes (25%) for pure meat consumption. If all Germans were to forego the consumption of meat, we could cut annual output by 37 million tonnes (out of a total of 866 million tonnes, around one percent).

No baby steps in climate change possible

In addition, factory farming occupies an enormous area in Germany, which can also be used, for example, to grow cereals, fruits and vegetables from organic farming. We would win twice and slow down climate change. Because we can only save the world from a climatic catastrophe by making a contribution to everyone – and that is why meat abstinence should be a first step.

Abholzungjpg

The least, however, must be that every person drastically reduces their meat consumption – otherwise he contributes actively to climate change, which we should better call climate crisis.
Because it is not done with baby steps, should be aware of every educated earthlings, meanwhile.

Schweinezucht-Guenthersdorf-Ferkel-Gitter

Not only because of climate change, but also for ethics!

Besides the positive contribution in the fight against climate change, the ethical component of vegetarianism also plays a role: the consumption of meat requires the killing of a sentient being who is suffering panic at slaughter. And why? To have a food on the plate that has little micronutrients and can even make you sick.

For those who are reluctant to eat meat, the next time they visit their favorite restaurant, they can imagine a sick pig squeezed into their little enclosure and rolling in their own stink. Well then, good appetite!

No comment, but… The next time you want to eat meat, think about this picture.

South Africa: Dead Lion Cubs Found in Freezer at Cruel ‘Canned Hunting’ Farm.

Dead Lion Cubs Found in Freezer at Cruel ‘Canned Hunting’ Farm

Dead Lion Cubs Found in Freezer at Cruel ‘Canned Hunting’ Farm

Officials inspecting a lion breeding farm in South Africa discovered a multitude of horrors during a surprise visit in July.

The first heartbreaking case of neglect was captured on video; two lion cubs locked in separate metal crates displayed serious neurological issues as their heads shook uncontrollably. With their front and back legs paralyzed, accompanying other serious injuries, the vet had no choice but to euthanize them at the scene.

Further searching revealed the bodies of around 20 tiger and lion cubs stuffed into a chest freezer.

Dead lion cubs in freezer

Shockingly, this isn’t the first time inspectors have found severe animal welfare issues at Pienika Farm in the North West Province. In April this year, officers from SA’s National Society for the Prevention of Animals (NSPCA) visited the property and found dozens of lions and tigers cramped together in small cages, many with no water or shelter. Twenty-seven animals were nearly bald due to extreme mange. The caracals were so obese they couldn’t even clean themselves.

Lions suffering from mange

During that first visit, more cubs suffering from severe neurological conditions were found.

Animal welfare charges were laid, but no action has been taken since then, as officials are reportedly still gathering evidence. Further charges will be added following the second inspection.

This farm is just one of an estimated 300 lion breeding farms in South Africa, where big cats are bred purely for lives of exploitation. Many end up as fodder for the canned hunting industry — but only after being used and abused throughout every stage of their lives. Ultimately, they are harvested for the lion bone trade.

Advocacy organization the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting alerted The Sun to this tragic case, bringing the issue of lion farming in South Africa into the media spotlight.

“There are around 60 such facilities in South Africa breeding big cats for people to pet, bottle feed, and then shoot for a trophy,” said Eduardo Goncalves, founder of the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting. “The bones are often sold off to dodgy dealers in Asia who make fake medicines out of them. This is the reality of big cat factory farming in South Africa. It’s simply obscene. The animals are kept in appalling conditions, and their owners make a fortune out of their misery.”

What is canned hunting?

Family pose by dead lion

Canned hunting is where people pay a fee to kill exotic animals kept in a confined area. The animals have no escape and are conditioned to humans, so they lack the flight response of wild animals.

Not only is the practice of killing animals bred in captivity legal in South Africa, it is thriving. The Born Free Foundation estimates that more than 8,000 lions and other big cats are held in hundreds of farms in the nation.

“Africa’s lions are facing an unprecedented crisis,” says Dr. Mark Jones, Head of Policy at the Born Free Foundation. “There are now almost three times more in captivity than there are in the wild. These animals have a short and traumatic life in what is an incredibly cruel and cynical industry.”

The big cats are ripped away from their mothers at around two-to-three weeks old. The mother is then immediately forced to breed again in a torturous cycle. Gullible animal lovers pay to volunteer at lion cub “orphanages,” petting and bottle feeding these babies, falsely assuming their efforts are contributing to conservation.

The cubs are then exploited at lion-walking facilities, where tourists spend money to get selfies. Finally, they are sold to the canned hunting sites. After being ruthlessly murdered, their body parts and bones are sold.

An estimated 800 farmed lions are slaughtered by trophy hunters every year in South Africa.

“Here in South Africa, where lions are indigenous and a massive part of our heritage, we are condemning thousands of lions to a life of captivity, where their basic needs are not being catered for, and we are subjecting what is globally known as the king of the animal kingdom to a pathetic life in a cage, waiting for death,” said Senior Inspector Douglas Wolhuter, manager of NSPCA’s Wildlife Protection Unit.

These magnificent animals suffer from birth for a gruesome, unethical industry which is kept afloat by wealthy trophy hunters from around the world.

England: Formal Announcement by Juliet at Viva! – re Hogwood Victory.

England

hogwood 1

I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that, following our third investigation into Hogwood Farm, Tesco and Red Tractor have finally responded to the cruelty we found there.

The hidden camera footage we obtained of workers abusing pigs at Hogwood Farm has led to Tesco dropping Hogwood as a supplier and Red Tractor suspending their certification.

This is a HUGE victory! We can’t express just how much this decision meant to us, all our amazing supporters, and the thousands of pigs trapped inside Hogwood Farm.

Mark – our work is not over. We’re in production for our groundbreaking documentary – Hogwood: a modern horror story – telling the story of Hogwood and UK factory farming in a way it’s never been told before

Image result for viva

Our team installed five hidden cameras across three sheds for a week-long investigation. We released this footage to The Daily Mail and, in response, Tesco and Red Tractor finally withdrew their support from the farm.

The hidden camera footage that we obtained showed horrific abuse by workers at Hogwood – with pigs being routinely beaten and kicked, as well as whacked with doors and cages.

Although we congratulate Tesco and Red Tractor on finally making the right decision, I can’t help but question why it is routinely left to vegan campaigning groups like Viva! to expose the abuse taking place on farms. And why it took three years of investigations for Tesco to act.

Factory farming is an inherently cruel business and we hope that this exposé shows that assurance schemes like Red Tractor cannot be trusted.

We’re not going to stop. Hogwood is huge but it’s just one farm – we’re going to keep campaigning to end this cruelty.

Our investigations were splashed across national newspapers and shared across the world. Yet Tesco, the government, National Pig Association, Trading Standards and Red Tractor repeatedly leaped to Hogwood’s defence.

Since our first investigation, the owners of Hogwood Farm invested thousands of pounds in security – rather than improving conditions for these poor animals. With such priorities, the animals will need us more than ever.

Our undercover investigations shine a light on the inherent cruelty hidden behind these closed doors. Let’s continue the momentum and help others choose compassion over cruelty.

Hogwood Documentary – we’re going to tell their story. Our groundbreaking documentary, Hogwood: a modern horror story, is currently in production and we need your help to fund its production and distribution – so we can get it out to millions of people.

In memory of Tyke…

Circus-Krone--Elefant-Auge-

Tyke was a female Elephant born 1974 and died August 20, 1994 after being shoot by the police 87 times.

It took nearly 2 hours for her to die there on the street in terrible pain, lonely and afraid…

Tyke was trapped and taken away from her family when she was a baby. She was shipped to the circus. There, she was confined to a concrete room and beaten over and over, to break her spirit. Circus trainers hit her repeatedly with a sharp metal “bullhook,” which made her cry out in pain. They struck her in her most sensitive areas: behind her ears, on top of her toes, in back of her knees, and around her anus. They wanted to hurt her and frighten her so she would be obedient.

She spent most of her time in chains, doing nothing. Her bones ached from no exercise. Her diet was monotonous. She stood in filth and excrement. She was deprived of every aspect of normal elephant life.

The day she died she was as usual performing for Hawthorne circus which have a long record of animal cruelty violations. In 1988, according to USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) documents, Tyke was beaten in public to the point where she was “screaming and bending down on three legs to avoid being hit.” The trainer said he was “disciplining” her…

By April of 1993, she had enough. She tried to escape during a circus performance. She didn’t make it. In July she tried to escape again; she was unsuccessful. Hawthorn should have retired her right then and there, as she was an obvious threat to the public. But they didn’t. Only God knows what punishment she received when brought back to the Circus.

For the next year she performed in the circus and lived in a barren concrete barn, chained, between shows. The bullhook beatings continued. She vacillated between terror and boredom.

In August of 1994 Tyke reached a breaking point. She had been in the circus nearly 20 years. She was tired of being beaten, whipped, and kicked. She could no longer take the pain and the confinement. She was angry and wanted to be free. At an afternoon performance at the Neal Blaidsell Center in Honolulu, it all came to a head.

At some point during the show, she veered from the script. Circus staff tried to beat her back, but no bullhook or whip could stop the rage that had been building inside her for two decades. She crushed her trainer, Allen Campbell. She attacked two other people. She panicked the crowd. She ran into the streets. It was rush hour. She was disoriented and no idea where she was. She charged at bystanders and smashed cars as she made her way through several city blocks. Onlookers screamed. The police were called out and started shooting at Tyke with rifles.

She slowly fell over, then awkwardly stood back up. The police kept firing. Her head swayed, and her legs buckled. She got up again. The spray of bullets continued. She rocked her head violently from side to side. Her legs gave way once more. She was on her knees and could not right herself. Her eyes were fully open and confused. The shooting went on for several more seconds. Finally, she fell, very slowly, onto her side.

This was Tyke’s final performance. The price of freedom from the circus was steep. She was shot 87 times!!!

…This is the two-class justice that protects the fascist law of the stronger, the ruler, the offender.
We respect animal rights only if they use our rights, that is, only if we remain the victors in the end.

We will not forget Tyke.
And we will continue to fight so that animals no longer have to serve as slaves the circus business.

Best regards to all, Venus
