Rare snowfall in China sanctuary creates a moon bear wonderland

As the new year dawns, and snow coats our China sanctuary, hope builds for nearly 800 bears holding on for rescue in Vietnam.

Happy New Year!

Over the New Year period, our sanctuary in Chengdu, China enjoyed a rare dusting of snow which transformed the sanctuary into a glorious winter wonderland.

For the bears it was their first proper snowfall in many years and they absolutely loved it. They rushed out of their dens to explore the snow-dusted enclosures and took great delight in stomping, eating and digging around in the most wonderful natural enrichment mother nature can provide.

While much of the world was enjoying chocolates under the tree and hearty family feasts, sanctuary staff spent the festive season with the bears. They continued to work round the clock throughout the holiday, keeping the bears’ tummies full and their hearts happy.

The China team had a sick bear on their hands, who is slowly improving thanks to their relentless care throughout both the days and nights of his ongoing recovery.

With 366 bears presently in our care, we can’t afford to switch off for a single day, and that is a commitment only possible thanks to our fabulous friends and supporters around the world.

It is you who kept that sick bear safe over the holidays. You kept Kevin smiling and hungry beauty Nicole satiated with all her favourite treats.

Your compassion gives hope too to all the bears holding on for rescue. Together with the Vietnamese government, we will rescue up to 800 bears by 2022. This is far and away the greatest challenge we’ve ever taken on – perhaps the greatest challenge any animal welfare charity has ever faced – but I know we can do it because we have you on our side.

You give me hope, because every year I am amazed at what you can do. The time you devote, the funds you ingeniously raise, and the attention you command when you tell the world what we’re doing.

Work continues on plans for how such an enormous number of rescues can be carried out and the long-term future care of every bear assured, and we hope to have exciting progress to share with you later in 2019.

I wish the greatest health and happiness to everyone in our Animals Asia family across the world – staff, volunteers, friends and supporters – because together we have shown how effective we can be for the animals of this vast and magnificent continent, and they need us so very much in 2019.

With endless thanks to you for keeping the magic of the dream we share alive and wishing you the happiest and healthiest 2019, with love and never ending bear hugs from us all, your family, Animals Asia.

PETITION TARGET: Alliance Steel Sdn Bhd

In a truly sickening case of animal abuse, three Chinese workers in a Malaysian steel manufacturing company brutally roped up a black dog and continued to torture the animal as it yelped in terror and struggled desperately to escape.

First, the men poured water over the helpless dog in a seeming attempt at drowning. One of the men then smashed the animal in the head with a hammer, splattering blood over the floor. The men continued the horror by pouring boiling water over the dog’s body to loosen the fur so they could scrape it away.

Finally, the dog was disemboweled where it lay.

The footage of this horrifying incident, captured at Alliance Steel Sdn Bhd in Kuantan Industrial Park, was shared on Facebook by an individual named John Gan, where it went viral as outraged viewers called for justice.

WAV Comment – why not go to the company web site and tell them how you feel about their inactions – there are lots of comments.  Demand the workers are taken to the police, prosecuted, and then sacked from their jobs; it does not seem like they are ‘working’ to us.  Demand the management acts.

The company apologized for the actions of their workers on their

Facebook page,

stating that they are taking the incident seriously and conducting an internal investigation. We must speak out to make sure they keep their word.

The actions of these men were not only inhumane, but they were also illegal and should not be tolerated.

Sign this petition urging Alliance Steel Sdn Bhd to thoroughly investigate this awful event, fire all individuals involved and work to ensure their prosecution.

So the workers are filth from China – that says a lot really. How does a company allow its alleged workers to undertake such cruelty as this – does not seem like ‘work’ to us !! ? – check out petition comments to see what people think.

Devon farmer ‘too upset’ by slaughter gives lambs to Kidderminster sanctuary

  • 28 January 2019

Source – https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-47026123

A farmer who became too upset when taking his lambs to the abattoir gave his flock to an animal sanctuary.

Sivalingam Vasanthakumar

Sivalingam Vasanthakumar, from Totnes, Devon, took the 20 male lambs nearly 200 miles (321km) to Goodheart Animal Sanctuaries, near Kidderminster.

Mr Vasanthakumar, a farmer for 47 years, said: “I just couldn’t cope any more and I had to say no.”

The sanctuary, which looks after 220 animals, said it had never received lambs from a farmer before.

The lambs will live on a 91 acre site at the sanctuary

Mr Vasanthakumar said he had previously worked as a dairy farmer with his parents in Sri Lanka but had also been a farmer in the UK for “many years”.

“It was taking them to the slaughterhouse and that was stressing me out a lot,” he said.

Mr Vasanthakumar said he also hated to see the “animals going through that stress”.

Mr Vasanthakumar decided to change his career several months ago when he would normally take the lambs to market.

“I realised this year, I couldn’t do it. The emotional toll had become too much,” he said.

He said he cooks Indian dishes and planned to sell these and his home-grown vegetables at a Totnes street market instead.

“I will still be in the farming world, but not livestock farming anymore,” he said.

Sanctuary manager Dave Bourne said there were only a “handful” of sanctuaries the UK that rehomed rescued farm animals.

A dog needed to be euthanised in Pirapora, in the north of Minas, on Friday afternoon after being attacked by a street sweeper who serves the town hall.

The 26-year-old man was in the garbage collection truck passing through Barrio Morada del Sol. When he went down to pick up a bag, the animal would have barked in the direction of the official, who kicked him, according to the Military Police. With the impact, the dog was thrown by a few meters and his spine fractured. The garbage dump fled the place. The police themselves directed the dog to a veterinary clinic in the city.

According to the policeman who accompanied the animal, he was very agonized and the professional decided to save him from the pain of the injuries. During the afternoon the dog received medication to be euthanised. The police reported that the neighbours were outraged and said they took turns taking care of the dog, who lived on the street, and gave him food and water.

The police made traces and found the street sweeper in the vicinity of the neighbourhood, still in service. For the military, the man reported that the dog threw a bag against him and that, to deviate from the object, the animal hit a tree. The official denied having touched the animal and could not explain how he would have been seriously injured.

We ask that this person can not work as a sweeper and go to jail for murdering an animal.

Target: Terry Curry, Prosecutor for Marion County, Indiana

Goal: Punish the person who allegedly left their dog outside in the bitter cold to freeze to death.

A dog was reportedly left outside to freeze to death during a dangerous polar vortex. The pup’s body was then thrown in the trash, allegedly by the owner. Demand justice for this poor animal.

Workers with Indianapolis Animal Care Services happened upon a horrific scene while sweeping the area for animals at risk. An empty wooden doghouse, blocked only by a towel, was reportedly the only protection one dog had from the bitter cold. A photo of a frozen water dish illustrated the seemingly horrific conditions the dog endured before eventually freezing to the ground. Rescuers found the animal’s remains in a dumpster, reports stated, and the body appeared incredibly malnourished.

An investigation is underway, and charges are likely to follow.

Sign below to demand that the person responsible for this dog’s death is charged with animal cruelty and assigned the maximum penalty possible.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prosecutor Curry,

A frozen dog was reportedly found in a dumpster in a shocking case of animal cruelty. Per investigators, the dog froze to death after being left outside in the bitter cold. I demand justice for this poor pup.

A dog reportedly froze to the ground after the poor animal was allegedly left outside without adaquate shelter. Indianapolis Animal Care Services stated that they found the pup’s remains in a dumpster while searching for animal’s at risk during the polar vortex. The dog’s final days were spent in a cold wooden dog house, investigators stated, with only a towel to block the wind. A photo, taken at the scene, showed a frozen water dish in the small fenced-in area where the dog initially died. Investigators suspect that the dog’s owner allowed the animal to freeze to death and then moved the body into the trash.

Any person who could allow a dog to die in such agony is a danger to animals and must be punished. I demand that you charge this person with animal cruelty and seek the maximum penalty possible.

Sincerely,

Govs. Cuomo and Murphy: Rescind the Port Authority Kill Contract with Wildlife Services

On June 18, 2018, before the horrified eyes of human families, USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services massacred a family of Mute Swans (shown above) swimming peacefully on Oneida Lake (https://www.newyorkupstate.com/outdoors/2018/06/killing_most_fowl_shooting_drowning_of_beloved_oneida_lake_mute_swan_family.html). The agents shot the parent swans to death in front of their babies and then—according to a document obtained under the Freedom of Information Act—removed the cygnets from the public eye and broke their necks (the technical term for which is “cervical dislocation”).   The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was by law forbidden from killing the swans because the Avella/Cymbrowitz moratorium on killing Mute Swans in New York State, which Governor Cuomo signed into law November of 2016, was still in place, so they hired a federal agency to carry out the crime.  There’d been a complaint of aggression by one person.  There was no investigation—even though the agents would have had to know that the only time Mute Swans are aggressive toward humans is when they fear for their babies.

Are federal agencies allowed to ride roughshod over state laws?

Does that not make a mockery of law itself?

What emboldened Wildlife Services?

The same year that Governor Cuomo signed the Mute Swan Bill into law prohibiting the killing of the swans (2016), he and the New Jersey governor of that time, Chris Christie, oversaw the signing of the Port Authority’s kill contract with Wildlife Services (2016-2021) which agrees to the killing of Canada Geese primarily, though also Mute Swans and other wild creatures, within a specified radius of New York and New Jersey airports, on grounds of air safety concerns (https://corpinfo.panynj.gov/documents/18235-C/). At Oneida Lake, Wildlife Services agents, who should have been charged with murder, animal cruelty, psychological torture, and conspiracy, killed with impunity.

Wildlife Services kills millions of animals annually throughout the country, often using sadistic methods.  They use poisoned gas, for example, on the Canada Geese of New Jersey (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8TodTMIW2w), a monstrously cruel practice that only one New Jersey town was able to stop temporarily, though activists in New York stopped it completely in New York State. Animal rights and environmental groups sue Wildlife Services regularly, yet the killing does not cease.  Wildlife Services claims that Mute Swans are a threat to air safety.  Yet according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s data that is patently false (https://wildlife.faa.gov/downloads/wildlife-strike-report-1990-2013-usda-faa.pdf … Table17, pages 39-40).  Within 24 years Mute Swans collided only 8 times with planes and caused zero property damage—as compared with Tundra Swans—mercifully not persecuted—who collided 12 times with planes during that same time period and caused over $470,000 in property damage.  Trumpeter Swans, also mercifully not persecuted, collided twice with planes though caused over $1,000,000 in damage.  (See also https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zPGMdw9b0zOVQ-T8uulLMlk7xFbkQv2K/view.)

Nor do the written justifications of Wildlife Services for killing Canada Geese justify anything (https://drive.google.com/file/d/16mNYepvEFdo8GxHU1e1TziFhURWOQ4Kr/view?usp=sharing). Yet Wildlife Services states in at least one Environmental Impact Statement their intention to expand their annual goose culls to include more and more wild creatures.

We, the undersigned, therefore urge Governors Cuomo and Murphy to rescind the New York/New Jersey Port Authority kill contract with Wildlife Services.

Marine megafauna feed by filtering thousands of cubic metres of seawater a day for plankton, meaning they are also taking in the tiny particles of indigestible plastic.

The microscopic plastic particles are even being consumed by humans, and it is believed that plastic in the gut could suppress the immune system and aid the transmission of toxins and harmful bugs or viruses.

Plastics found in the guts of UK’s seals, dolphins and whales

The vast majority of the particles – 84% – originated from clothes, fishing nets, and toothbrushes, with the rest from packaging.

Scientists have discovered that microplastics are accumulating in the guts of every marine mammal that has washed up on the shores on the UK.

In a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports, the researchers from the University of Exeter and Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) examined 50 carcasses.

The carcasses, which came from 10 species of seals, dolphins and whales, all contained microplastics – plastic particles smaller than 5mm – in their digestive systems.

The vast majority of the particles (84%) which the researchers discovered were synthetic fibres, originating from clothes, fishing nets and toothbrushes – while the rest were fragments from food packaging and plastic bottles.

Microplastics are known to pose a massive threat to the largest marine species.
