Jungle School – Helping Baby Orangutans Go Back To The Wild.

Jungle School is currently being shown on UK television.

What a brilliant series – training Orangutan babies who’s mothers have been killed by poachers etc to get ready for a life back in the wild.

But only after they have undertaken all their training at the Jungle School.

Superb !!

Orangutan dies after brutal pellet gun, stabbing attack

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A male orangutan on the Indonesian portion of Borneo died after being shot at least 130 times with an air gun and apparently being stabbed and clubbed, in the second known killing of a critically endangered orangutan this year.

Villagers spotted the wounded orangutan in a lake in the Kutai Timur district of East Kalimantan province on Sunday.

Local police chief Teddy Ristiawan said Wednesday that the great ape was still alive when he was taken Monday to a hospital in the town of Bontang.

·         4 elephants found poisoned to death by poachers

A statement from the Center for Orangutan Protection said the orangutan died early Tuesday.

An X-ray showed at least 130 air gun pellets in its body, including more than 70 in its head, the center said.

It said an autopsy found the animal had been blinded as a result of the shooting and also had 17 open wounds believed to be caused by sharp objects. Its left thigh, right chest and left hand were bruised from blunt object trauma.

Ramadhani, a manager of habitat protection at the center who goes by one name, said the death was a terrible event in the history of conflict between orangutans and humans in Indonesia.

“The 130 pellets within the body of a primate is a new record, the most ever,” he said.

In mid-January, an orangutan was found decapitated and shot more than a dozen times with an air gun in Central Kalimantan, environmental news website Mongabay reported. Police arrested two rubber farmers suspected in the killing, it said.

The number of orangutans in Borneo and on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, recognized as separate species and both classified as critically endangered, has fallen precipitously since the 1970s.

Orangutans are a protected species in Indonesia and Malaysia, but deforestation has dramatically reduced their habitat and brought them into contact with farmers and plantation workers who kill them to protect crops and for meat.

About 40 percent of Borneo’s forests have been lost since the early 1970s and another huge swath of forest is expected to be converted to plantation agriculture in the next decade.

Eating animals: an anachronism!

österreichische Flagge

(From the blog of the famous Austrian philosopher and animal ethicist: Helmut F. Kaplan)

In many areas of life, over time, wide and profound changes have taken place. Let us remember the immense progress in medicine, technology and science. Or the great works in literature and music.

Only in one area has not changed, no improvement since the Stone Age: the food. We still eat like wild animals.

Extreme-Normal Karikatur

Meat eating (and the related consumption of other animal products) is THE anachronism of modern man, an ecological, economic, medical and ethical madness: this gruesome habit destroys the environment, is uneconomic and unhealthy, causes hunger and is a crime against the animals.

China: Under Your Skin – The Chinese Demand for Donkey Skins for Use In Traditional Medicine Make It The New Ivory.

china

The demand for donkey skins in particular, to produce Ejiao – a traditional Chinese medicine made from donkey-derived gelatin, has generated a significant trade across the globe and we believe current practices are unsustainable and causing mass-scale suffering.

It is reported that in China, millions of donkeys are farmed for their skins to produce a medicinal gelatin (ejiao). The global trading of donkey skins is now having an impact on donkey welfare and the livelihood of people around the world.

donk skin 1

Why donkey skins?

The donkey skins are being used to make gelatin for a product called ejiao, a product that has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years.

What is ejiao?

Ejiao (said: eh-gee-yow) is a hard gel that can be dissolved in hot water or alcohol to be used in food or drink, or in beauty products such as face creams. Believed to improve blood circulation, ejiao is used as a blood tonic by people with anaemia, low blood cell counts or reproductive problems.

The stolen donkeys are mostly working animals, which means the owners then have no transport and can’t get to market, fetch water or get children to school. The trade in skins means that the value of donkeys has risen dramatically, which makes theft more likely but also makes it much more difficult for owners to afford to replace a stolen donkey. In Egypt, the cost of buying a donkey has increased from £17 to £170.

What impact is this having on donkeys in countries where SPANA works?

The donkey skins used in the product were previously largely sourced from Chinese farms. But with China’s donkey population dropping from 11 million in 1990 to 5.4 million in 2016, manufacturers are now targeting donkeys from Africa to meet demand. This is having a significant impact in a number of the countries where SPANA works – for instance, Botswana’s donkey population has decreased by 38 per cent in two years.

Donkeys that are sold for their skins are often treated terribly throughout the transport and slaughter process loaded roughly onto cramped, dangerous vehicles, starved, and killed brutally.

DONKEYS are the backbone of many farming villages in developing countries. But if current trends continue, the world’s rural poor may soon need to find a new beast of burden. The animals’ ranks have thinned dramatically in many African countries: Kenya’s donkey population, for example, has fallen by half since 2009, to 900,000. The primary cause is neither disease nor declining demand for live donkeys, but instead a burgeoning market for their pelts.

China is reducing the import tax on donkey skins for use in traditional medicine despite fears over a global reduction in the animal’s population.

From Monday, the tax will fall from 5% to 2%, making imports cheaper.

Gelatine made from donkey skin is highly prized in China and purchases of hides have soared in recent years.

Donkey trade – the facts

§  1.8m skins are traded every year – according to estimates from UK-based charity The Donkey Sanctuary – but the demand is as high as 10m

§  China’s donkey population dropped from 11m in 1990 to 3m in 2017, based on government data

§  Ejiao, the gelatine produced by boiling donkey skins, can sell for up to $388 (£300) per kilo

§  Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal have banned donkey exports to China

England: Abusing Sheep Shearers To Now Face Criminal Charges ?

England

Regarding our recent post on UK sheep shearers abusing sheep:

https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2018/08/25/england-sheep-shearers-shame-the-uk-on-its-good-animal-welfare-standards-watch-the-video-now/

Now, and quite rightly; it seems that these same people could be facing criminal charges; something which we welcome.

The RSPCA is considering whether to prosecute after an undercover investigation revealed horrific cruelty and abuse behind the scenes as sheep were sheared on British farms.

Animals could be seen writhing in agony as they were violently hit, punched and stamped on, and had their limbs twisted.

Rescue of heart-broken dog dying alone in sewage

We got a call on our helpline that a dog was lying in sewage water and that he couldn’t move. Our rescuers found a skeletal dog with flies swarming around his eyes, disoriented and very near dying. We didn’t have any information about what had caused him to be so close to death, so we rushed to stabilize him and hoped that he would recover, believing we were giving comfort and a last chance to a dog who very likely would not survive. But Shyam was determined and showed us that he was not ready to go!

Car accident victim learns to walk again

After being hit by a car, this little sweetheart collapsed in a factory, and might never have walked again but for receiving weeks of hydrotherapy, and massage. The pain caused him to take tender little footsteps with an arched back and stressed brow. Calf slowly choking from embedded rope rescued

We found beautiful little Jimmy with a rope tied around his neck cutting into his flesh and as he grew, he was slowly choking to death. Born in a Dairy, he was abandoned because he was a boy who could not be used for milk.  Neighbors didn’t see that the rope was buried in his skin until the wound became huge. After 6 weeks of daily treatment, Jimmy nestled into the warmth of the other cows and the people who cared for him.

The slaves in modern society!

sklavereischellen

The beginning of the slavery of the human species was in 1444, when the first Africans were deported to Portugal to exploit their labor power.
In the following centuries, until the 19th century, Europeans exploited some twenty million Africans.
They were kidnapped from their villages and their homeland, they were sent to North America or brought to other ports for eight weeks by ship.

Sklaventransport.5jpgSchafen Transporte

They were chained on board, huddled together and dumped overboard when they got sick or had problems. They were sold in markets to white slave traders, they were just considered goods.

In the 1960s, the civil rights movement in the US began to make an important progress for people’s rights and was a decisive blow against apartheid.
Interestingly, when the United States ended slavery in 1865, every freed slave not only got a piece of earth, but also a donkey as a slave!!
Animals are until this day the “legal” slaves of the world.

3_img851hhSklaven_KaribikDer-Tiersklave

Because humans beings have a self-interest (but also an advantage) in taking on the role of the oppressor, the abolition of animal slavery seems to be a task that is not as simple as it was the abolition of human slavery.
Moreover, animals can not express themselves and their desire for freedom, life, joy and hapiness  in our language, wich was possible for the human slaves.
That is why today we often hear the phrase “many peoples have been treated as animals” as if torture, exploitation, sadism, mass murder would be acceptable if the victims were “only” animals.

bild mit Sklaven 1Angeketteter Stier

Animals are therefore today the Lawless, they are the modern slaves.
And to understand this analogy between human slavery and animal slavery seems to be an enormously difficult task, because humans are far from recognizing animals’ full moral status and granting fundamental rights.
Rights that all living beings have.

And above all the right to life, the right to be free from slavery, torture, suffering.

Äffin und Indianerin mit toten Kindern_n

The robbery of the homeland, the chains, the months of ship transport, the brand on their body, the sale to auction markets, the brawl.. all of that belonged to the life and everyday life of the erstwhile human slaves.
People have freed themselves.

Animals remain the victims, the slaves of modern society. All over the world.
The animal liberation is and remains the mission of the animal rights movement.

This is our mission!

My best regards to all, Venus

UK: Severe Questions for Government to Answer Regarding British Lamb Sold to Saudi Arabia. Was It Stunned Prior to Slaughter or Not ?

uk

WAV Comment  – The lambs would be slaughtered in the UK and NOT exported live.  But when they are slaughtered in the UK, are they stunned in accordance with UK and EU law, or non stunned as required by Saudi ? – big issue which will cause many to question the attitude of the government.  Clarity required.

sheep rule

—————————————

The UK government has been accused of watering down animal welfare standards after it emerged that British lambs sold to Saudi Arabia in a major new trade deal may not be stunned before slaughter.

The deal, understood to be worth £25 million over the next five years, has been criticised by MPs and animal welfare groups.

The British Veterinary Association has called on the government to clarify whether the lambs would be killed using a ‘cruel’ non-stun method, which the body condemns as causing ‘unnecessary suffering’.

England: Sheep Shearers Shame the UK On Its Good Animal Welfare Standards. Watch The Video Now.

England

WAV Comment – Sheep suffer abuse the world over.  Australian live export to the middle east; Museling; Shearing; Slaughter; Eid Sacrifice – sadly the UK shearing business is getting as bad as the filth that abuse sheep in Australia.  Shame on them for dragging good UK welfare into the gutter.  But what else should we expect ?

PETA Asia’s latest eyewitness investigation found that workers threw, beat, stamped on, kicked, mutilated, and killed sheep as they sheared them in England.

watch the video

As you can see in the groundbreaking video footage,

shearers violently punched these gentle animals in the face, beat them, jabbed them in the head with sharp metal clippers, and stamped and stood on their heads and necks. They threw scared sheep around and slammed their heads and bodies against hard wooden floors. The eyewitness never saw any veterinary care being given to the animals, including those with mastitis – a painful udder infection – and prolapsed uteruses.

These animals need your help.

Will you pledge to ditch wool and share this footage with your family and friends?

Together, we can make a difference for these suffering animals.

In 2018 we want to see THOUSANDS MORE vegans taking over the streets of London and other cities, demanding an end to all animal oppression.

This will be the first time we arrange this march in Amsterdam and we need your help!

Please invite your friends, tell every vegan you meet, this is the day that we unite, where we stand up, rise up and say no more, not in our name.

The future is vegan, but we must continue to speak out on behalf of the animals until the day that their suffering ends.

All details, including the route will be published closer to the time.

Save the date, spread the word – and let’s make history for the animals.
