Why it’s time for a ban on snares

What are snares?

A snare is a thin wire noose set to trap animals which some people view as being a pest or threat, usually foxes and rabbits. They are intended to catch the animals around the neck like a lasso.

Many people are surprised that this archaic form of trapping is still allowed, believing it was outlawed decades ago. But it is still legal to use a certain type of snare in the UK.

Injury and death – why snares are so cruel

The modern legal snare is meant to tighten around an animal and hold it quietly until the gamekeeper comes to kill it. But the reality is shocking. In their desperate struggle to escape, animals may be strangled, or may suffer horrible and sometimes life-threatening injuries, or a lingering death.

Even if the snare doesn’t kill the animal, they may still die at the hands of a predator, dehydration or exposure to the elements. The League Against Cruel Sports is doing everything it can to protect animals from snares, as in the UK they are mainly set up by shooting estates to eliminate animals that predate on ‘game’ birds, and therefore this is a subject linked to cruel sports.

How many animals are caught in snares?

Like landmines, snares are indiscriminate, because these wire traps can’t tell the difference between a fox, your family pet or a protected species.

As a result, the amount and diversity of animals that fall victim to these snare traps is immense. Snares capture any animal that happens to step into them. In 2012 a UK government study found that only around a quarter of the animals trapped in snares were the intended targets (normally foxes). The remaining three quarters of the animals caught, severely injured or killed in these vicious nooses included hares, badgers, family cats and dogs, deer and even otters.

Based on the government’s 2012 research, we estimate that snares may be trapping up to 1,700,000 animals every year.

Who uses snares?

These days, snares are set mainly by gamekeepers on commercial shooting estates to stop foxes from catching the ‘game’ birds, It’s ironic that these snares kill so many different animals, just so that the pheasants, partridges and grouse can be protected till they are shot down later for ‘sport’. Snares are seldom used by people to catch their own food.

So many of the UK’s precious wild animals are being wiped out to protect the profits of private shooting interests. We believe that this is absolutely not a valid justification for causing such cruelty and suffering.

Are snares legal in the UK?

Yes – we’re completely out of step with most European countries.

Britain is one a few European countries where snares are still used. Most countries in this part of the world recognise that these devices have no place in modern society and, if necessary, they use alternatives.

Here in the UK, it is still legal to set ‘free-running’ neck snares to catch foxes and rabbits. These types of snares are supposed to hold the trapped animal alive until the snare operator returns and kills it. But they can become kinked or rusty – and lethal. The animals’ panicked struggles just exacerbate the potential for terrible injuries and death. Legal snares can also be set in the wrong way or the wrong place, increasing their potential to cause more suffering and catch non-targeted animals. And illegal snares are designed to kill all the animals they catch are still in use.

Why a snaring Code of Practice will never work

The Government believes that snare use can be controlled by a Code of Practice by providing guidelines on their use, including how and where to set them and how to avoid injury to the animals.

But its own research shows that no amount of regulation can reduce the suffering snares inflict – or the number or variety of animals caught in these lethal traps.

In the Government’s own 2012 report into snaring, not a single fox snare operator visited was fully compliant with the Code of Practice that was valid at that time, a full seven years after it was introduced. Furthermore, a study by the shooting industry itself revealed that less than half of the gamekeepers involved had even read the Code. Although there are now new codes of best pactice in Scotland, England and Wales, none of them are likely to prevent non-target animals from being caught, or to eliminate suffering to acceptable levels, even if they are fully complied with. It is simply impossible to enforce regulations for a practice that occurs primarily on private land in remote locations. Claiming snaring can be properly regulated to avoid unnecessary suffering and to address the conservation concerns they create, is a cop-out .

How can we change the law on snaring?

The League will continue to campaign for a ban on snares in all the countries of the UK, because, like most of the people in the country, we passionately believe that snares are cruel and cannot be merely regulated. A total ban will make enforcement far easier and should not cause any significant problem as there are many alternatives to snaring.

Most British people want snares banned.

  • 77% of the British public think snares should be illegal (Ipsos MORI, 2014)
  • 68% of MPs also support a ban on snares (Dods poll, 2015)

We believe that as we continue our education programme and more and more people understand what snares really are and the damage they do, these numbers will continue to increase.

In England, MPs debated snaring in the House of Commons in July 2016, and voted for a ban. However, the government ignored the vote and instead have pushed ahead with a new Code of Practice – which was drawn up by the shooting industry, the very people who use snares the most.

We are also working hard to seek bans on snares in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
It is time for a complete ban on the manufacture, importation, sale and use of snares to end the suffering of the huge number of animals caught in them every year.

Fox cubs ‘fed’ to South Herefordshire hunting hounds

A man and a woman have admitted causing unnecessary suffering to fox cubs at a hunting kennels.

Birmingham Magistrates’ Court heard the cubs were “fed” to hounds belonging to the South Herefordshire Hunt.

Julie Elmore and Paul Reece at Birmingham Magistrates' Court in August 2018

Pictured above –  Julie Elmore, 55, of Brynarw estate near Abergavenny, and Paul Reece, 48, from Itton, in south Wales both admitted two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

Three others deny the same charges.

Paul Oliver and Hannah Rose at Birmingham Magistrates' Court in August 2018

Above – Paul Oliver and Hannah Rose

– Opening the case against the hunt’s master of hounds Paul Oliver, kennel maid Hannah Rose and terrierman Nathan Parry, prosecutor Simon Davis said: “The unnecessary suffering involved the killing of fox cubs, effectively feeding the animals… throwing the fox cubs into the kennels of the fox hounds, thereby killing them.”

Nathan Parry at Birmingham Magistrates' Court in August 2018

Terrierman Nathan Perry

The court was told a hidden camera was placed at the kennels by the Hunt Investigation Team after it received information animal welfare legislation had been allegedly breached in May 2016.

Mr Oliver, was caught by the covert camera as he prepared to feed live fox cubs to the dogs, the court heard.

Mr Davis alleged the camera provided “significant” evidence against Mr Oliver, including footage which he claimed showed him lifting fox cubs out of a cage and entering the kennels.

Mr Parry, 40, also of Brynarw estate, denies four charges of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

Mr Oliver, 40, and Ms Rose, 30, both of Sutton Crosses, near Spalding, Lincolnshire, also deny four counts of animal cruelty.

Sara-Lise Howe, acting for Ms Rose, said: “She was not involved and did not cause the death of the foxes.

“She simply didn’t know about it.”

Clive Rees, representing Mr Oliver, submitted there was no evidence whatsoever to show he killed two of the foxes which are the subject of the charges.

Mr Oliver claimed to have used an axe to kill foxes and denied throwing the animals to the hounds.

Elmore and Reece, will be sentenced at a later date.

The trial continues.

Botswana: the elephant murder begins again

Botswana has about 130,000 elephants, the largest population in the world, and   Botswana is described as its last sanctuary in Africa.

botswana flagge

Horrible! Botswana lifts ban on elephant hunting and commissions a Hollywood PR company to fight negative headlines 😡

While in other African countries elephants are almost extinct for their ivory and trophy hunting, Botswana has been called the paradise for elephants.
Botswana banned elephant hunting.
Although the EU and regional neighbors called for the lifting of the hunting ban imposed in 2014, Botswana remained firm.
Botswana is determined to continue fighting against trophy hunting, captive breeding, and ivory trade, according to the answer.
Botswana gained a notorious fame when Juan Carlos, who was WWF Honorary President and King of Spain at the time, broke his hip while hunting elephants.

juancarlos-elefantes

It had long been expected that Botswana would not stand up to pressure, and now the time has come: the government is rescinding the ban.

elefantenjagd-222

The German Hunting Association welcomes the decision and the government of Botswana has even hired a Hollywood public relations firm to stop the negative reaction to its decision to continue trophy hunting.
The company will receive $ 125,000 over the next two months. The company’s clients include actress Meryl Streep, who has decided against selling and importing ivory.

It was not until March 2019 that Zimbabwe made terrible headlines! Again 30 elephant babies were sold to China.
Zimbabwe continues to sell its elephants to China.
They are torturously captured and airlifted to China by plane.

Elefanten Mama mit baby

How can one state as a reason, one would have too many elephants, as now also in the Botswana the case, although the KAZA national park, a world-wide largest zone for nature protection and ecotourism seven years ago with 50 million euro German financing would have to provide sufficient space ?

KAZA, which was founded with German development aid in cooperation with the WWF, was signed by Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. But as it turned out, this park apparently only exists on paper.
What were 50 million euros paid for?
This “paper park” was supposedly built to protect elephants.

Elefanten8As said, the Botswana government has engaged a PR firm with close ties to Hollywood to fight back against the bad publicity triggered by the South African nation’s decision to lift the ban on elephant hunt, according to daytondailynews.com on 24 May 2019.

42 West, a company primarily known for its work with celebrities and the film industry, told the US Department of Justice last week that it will work with the Tourism Ministry of Botswana.
This emerges from a submission under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

This puts 42 West in an uncomfortable situation.
Big game hunting is a highly controversial issue, especially in Hollywood, and numerous prominent activists have opposed killing the world’s largest land mammal for sport, including some calls for a tourism boycott against Botswana.

Botswana’s hunting ban was imposed by a former president, Ian Khama, an outspoken conservationist.
However, current President Mokgweeti Masisi has called for the nation to be reopened for hunting, and the decision to lift the ban is set to face general elections in October 2019.

What did the government say?

Botswana has lifted the prohibition on elephant hunting and explains this with growing conflicts between humans and animals, which sometimes destroy the crop.

President Masisi set up a committee last June to review the ban imposed by his predecessor in 2014. In February, the committee recommended allowing the hunt again.

“The number and levels of conflicts between humans and elephants and the resulting impact on livelihoods increased,” said the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Tourism in a statement.

“Predators have increased and cause much damage by killing large numbers of livestock,” it continues, “and finally,” they would ensure that the “reintroduction of hunting is done in an orderly and ethical manner.” (!!!)

Botswana 23. Mai, The President has spoken: Let’s offer @TheEllenShow and all the other RACISTS who are peddling lies about our country & our #elephants, to send us their delivery address! We are ready to deliver.. #HumanLivesMatterToo #HandsOffBotswana

What is the background?

Most of the country’s elephants live in the country’s northern region, roaming across borders into Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Elefanten Herde

The latest survey of wildlife suggests their numbers are not increasing as many rural people suspect, and conservationists are likely to say the decision aims to boost the president’s popularity among rural voters ahead of elections in October.

There are some 415,000 elephants in Africa, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with the population having been decimated largely due to poaching for ivory.

getöteter elefantpg

International campaigns to ban all ivory sales as a way to prevent illegal poaching have gained huge momentum, but there is disagreement over how to manage large, destructive elephant populations encroaching on human settlements.

https://netzfrauen.org/2019/05/26/botswana-2/#more-64111

My comment: Botswana is known as a destination for luxury safaris. That’s why the German Hunting Association has rubbed its hands, out of sheer joy for the regained freedom to murder elephants in Botswana.

The Botswana Department of the Environment asserted in a statement that the hunt would be in accordance with all wildlife laws and regulations. And I read today that there is already head money for every shot elephant!!

On the other hand, the organization Pro Wildlife suspects political reasons behind the decision. Botswana’s new president wants to win votes in rural areas in the new elections in October.
And so the victims are again the culprits.  For how else can one justify the imminent elephant murder if elephants are not portrayed as perpetrators?

After all, the corrupt government of Botswana has spent a lot of money on the PR company 42 West from Hollywood so that they can properly sell the planned massacre to the public.

But to assert that the hunt for life beings happens in this case because the elephants are overwhelmed, and because murder is the only useful option, I find this an insult to human ingenuity!

My best regards, Venus

Mark sent me this petition a few minutes ago: I did not know that. Please sign and share it.  https://ladyfreethinker.org/sign-reject-plan-to-allow-trophy-hunting-of-botswanas-elephants/?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email

We will not send our “delivery address” to the corrupt President Massisi. But we, the “racists” will raise our voices all over the world, and we all will fight to prevent the new massacre of these sensitive animals. And if he still does not get it, then we will call for a tourism boycott. We don`t need a PR company for that!

Plaintiffs ask Wakayama court to halt permits for Taiji dolphin hunts, citing Japan’s animal cruelty laws.

  • May 17, 2019

taiji 2 15

The Wakayama District Court began hearing arguments Friday over whether dolphin hunting violates animal cruelty laws.

The plaintiffs are asking the court to stop the permits from being issued.

Wakayama Gov. Yoshinobu Nisaka issues the permits for the town of Taiji, where the hunts have drawn protests. Taiji is also known for its centuries-old whaling traditions.

The 2009 Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove” showed the town’s hunts, where dolphins were chased into a cove and bludgeoned to death, turning the waters blood red. In recent years, they changed their hunting method to suffocation.

The plaintiffs, a former Taiji resident and activist Ren Yabuki, and supporters of the case, say the killings remain traumatic and painful, despite the new method.

Taiji 4

Wakayama conservation official Takashi Uede declined comment on the case but stressed that the prefecture believes the hunts follow the law.

The case does not demand monetary damages but could set a precedent in contesting the legality of the killings, according to Takashi Takano, the lawyer for the plaintiffs. “If these people can’t contest the permit, then who can,” he said.

taiji 7

Taiji officials and fishermen have defended the hunt as tradition and say eating dolphin meat is no different from eating beef or chicken. However, the hunts are also lucrative in that some dolphins are sold into captivity at aquariums and marine shows.

The government stands behind commercial whaling and is pulling out of the International Whaling Commission. Whalers are making plans to resume commercial hunting in July, for the first time in three decades.

Taiji is expected to be one of the Pacific coastal towns joining the whaling fleet.

Switzerland: the wild animal killer

A great article by the Swiss community IG Wild beim Wild”, which specializes in the legal aspects of wildlife conservation.

“Virtually everything that is cruel, unnecessary and heartless is sponsored by the Hunting Association Switzerland.

schweiz fahne

The Swiss Hunting Association primarily cultivates irreverence and a culture of violence – exactly the opposite, according to which a cultured person should strive in our society.

Hobby hunters even threaten a civil war, if, for example, the fox hunt should be stopped.

Füchse

The main propagator of the fox tapeworm is not the fox, but it is mainly the mouse. And these spread diligently, also thanks to the fox hunt gorgeous and infected every fox tapeworm-spreading animal – so also dogs and cats, which are not dewormed regularly!
In fox hunting-free areas, as well as in Luxembourg, Canton Geneva, national parks, etc., there was no increase in this disease. Foxes can easily be vaccinated by bait if necessary – is already done in many urban areas long ago. Hobby hunters spread according to studies with their shabby recreational activities even diseases!

Members of the association Hunt Switzerland have relations with representatives of the power in general. Furthermore, they use force or other means of intimidation (fear, lies, propaganda, etc.) to influence politics, the media, public administration, the judiciary or the economy.

jäger-

Again and again, members of the Hunting Club Executive Committee try to sabotage our community “IG Wild beim Wild”  by demanding, under the threat of criminal prosecution, the deletion of entire articles revealing the cruel activities of hobby-hunters.

The state gamekeepers,  as in the Geneva model, do not practice cruel hunting methods such as building, bustle, drifting hunts, etc. because they have no reason for it.

There would be no abused hunting dogs.
No unnecessary hunts on wild animals like the fox.

An alcohol ban in wildlife management would be established, etc.

Sanitary or therapeutic killings practiced by game wardens are not the same as an regulatory hunt based on the hunter lie or misunderstood experience of nature!

These people of Hunt Switzerland hunt, terrorize, injure and kill defenseless animals – often just for fun or boredom. However, hunters can not tolerate hunting criticism.

fuchsjagd (1)

It is the task of the IG Wild beim Wild”, to give the wild animals a voice, because otherwise they can not defend themselves from cowardly snipers.

Jäger mit toten Füchsen

A few weeks ago, the Swiss Hunting Association again filed an arbitrary complaint against IG Wild am Wild” – more on that later in another documentary article.

The undemocratic approach of the Swiss Hunting Association also contradicts the right of press freedom. In Switzerland, this is still governed by the freedom of expression under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This is precisely what is repeatedly disregarded in the lawsuits by Swiss Hunting Association against IG Wild bei Wild”.

The society has a public interest and right to know about these players from the environment of the sector like association Hunting Switzerland.

As a normal citizen you lose the composure when you experience the endless mischief on the part of hobby hunters. And you can not really blame anyone for that.
In addition, you personally do not benefit from it, but we just do animal welfare, and give those a voice that have none and are suffering. Because of these hobby hunters, wild animals in Switzerland suffer.

wildlife-photographer-füchsejpg

Just because the victims of the brutal activities of hobby hunters are not 100% human in nature, “IG Wild beim Wild” does not mean that their deeds are less abhorrent.

Wild animals have no voice and can not join in supposedly democratic decisions.
We, the “IG Wild at the Wild”, as wildlife advocates and game keepers,  give the needy a voice. Consistent with scientific and wild-biological findings.

Wild animals also have feelings and emotions. They can suffer, grieve and feel joy. They live like us humans in family associations and social structures, which destroy the today’s hobby hunters mostly for the fun”.

My comment: In their blog, this great group has posted a flyer, whth the title:

Five cartridges for five truths.

Cartridge 1- Swiss hunting is An association whose members are involved in law violations year after year in the four-digit range.

Cartridge 2- Culture If hunting is culture, cannibalism is gastronomy. The hunt has caused many problems in Switzerland but still no one problem solved sustainably.

Cartridge 3- Wild life The hunt has caused many problems in Switzerland but still no one problem solved sustainably.

Cartridge 4- Ethics What Hunter considers “good” has nothing to do with truth, science, decency, ethics, etc …

Good News! Minnesota Moves to Ban Recreational Wolf Hunting

The Minnesota House of Representatives has voted in support of a bill that would ban the cruel sport of recreational wolf hunting in the state.

Although the bill narrowly pushed through with a 66-65 vote, the victory was unexpected in this largely pro-wolf hunting region.

Representative Peter Fischer introduced the amendment to an environmental bill, stating that wolves are an important species for Native American tribes and should not be hunted for sport.

Since 2014, federal law has banned wolf hunting in Minnesota (and most other states). However, a recent proposal by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to delist gray wolves from the Endangered Species Act could change that. If wolves are delisted, each state would manage their own populations, and hunters could be allowed to needlessly slaughter these graceful animals as early as 2020.

Most areas of the United States classify gray wolves as endangered; however, Minnesota, which has an estimated gray wolf population of 2,650, lists them as threatened.

While gray wolf populations are gradually recovering, they are still only present in about five percent of their historic range, and conservationists say that it’s far too early to consider removing protections.

Although the bill still needs to progress through the Senate, it is a promising first step in ensuring one of the United States’ most iconic species continues to be protected from trophy hunters.

Update – pm 15/5/19  from the NRDC:

https://www.nrdc.org/

Dear Mark,

In most of the range where gray wolves once lived, played, and roamed, no one has heard a wolf howl in decades.

Once driven to the brink of extinction, only about 6,000 remain in the lower-48 states. Yet the Trump administration has proposed to strip wolves of their vital Endangered Species Act protections.

Help NRDC ensure beloved species like the gray wolf receive the full protection they deserve under the law: Become a Monthly Partner by May 17, and your first three gifts will be MATCHED, up to $150,000.

Gray wolves could once be found across the country — until the mid-20th century, when a massive government-sponsored program eradicated almost every gray wolf in the lower-48 states.

When the Endangered Species Act passed in the 1970s, the unmitigated slaughter of gray wolves ended, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was charged with their recovery.

When the Endangered Species Act passed in the 1970s, the unmitigated slaughter of gray wolves ended, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was charged with their recovery.

Although wolves have made progress in some areas, they are still missing from significant parts of their historical range. But instead of helping wolves fully recover, the Fish and Wildlife Service has been trying to cut them loose for the better part of a decade — and now, the Trump administration plans to let that happen.

It’s heartbreaking to think we might have saved the gray wolf from extinction just to wind up here. The Trump administration is doing the bare minimum for gray wolves before yanking away the critical protections they need to fully recover.

NRDC has fought in court to protect gray wolves before — and we’ve won. And we’re prepared to file suit again to give wolves the chance at recovery that they deserve.

But Mark, we’re currently embroiled in dozens of other active cases against the Trump administration, too — and we urgently need your help to ensure we can respond swiftly and forcefully as soon as protections for gray wolves are stripped away.

For only a few more days, you can DOUBLE your impact to protect endangered species from the Trump administration’s cruel, deadly attacks. Please become a Monthly Partner now — this is urgent.

For the last few years, we’ve beat back a record number of threats against endangered species, from rusty patched bumble bees and giraffes to elephants and North Atlantic right whales. Responding to these mounting attacks requires unprecedented resources — but we can’t slow down. Not when so much is at stake.

Today, you can do twice as much to help make sure we stand strong, no matter what. Thank you for helping safeguard the earth — its animals, its plants, and its people.

I want to share with you some photographs I took yesterday evening (12/5/19) of a few visitors who come into the front garden every evening. They are coming round for some food, which I always supply; but just as importantly, and being an ex volunteer fox rescuer for the ‘Fox Project’ which is based here in Kent –

http://foxproject.org.uk/

– please check out their website; I make sure I can do a very regular health check on them to make sure there are no problems; especially Mange.

So here they are; pictures from yesterday, taken from my front door. I never encourage foxes to come too close; as not everyone is like me regarding Vulpines; but if you have some in your area; they have a very sweet tooth; and love jam sandwiches, some cake, bsiscuits, sausage rolls; or any dog or cat food which is left over. I always mix this up with some really broken digestive biscuits to just ‘bulk up’ what they get.

Enjoy

Regards Mark

France: Tell Eurotunnel to stop shipping game birds for shooting.

FRAN0001

lacs eurotunnel

Dear Mark,

Pheasant chicks are being shipped through Eurotunnel, destined to be gunned down for entertainment on British shooting estates. These birds were born on factory farms in France, where their parents remain incarcerated in barren battery cages.

Every year, 35 million birds are released into the countryside for the sole purpose of being shot, of which half are imported from overseas. Many of these day-old birds will suffer and die in transport boxes from exhaustion and stress, only metres away from passengers on Eurotunnel’s trains.

Together, with help from our supporters, the League Against Cruel Sports has already successfully stopped ferry companies P&O, Brittany Ferries and DFDS importing chicks on their ships.

Without Eurotunnel this cruel trade would struggle to continue. We’re urging you to publicly tweet Eurotunnel today to demand the company bans transport of game birds for shooting.
