France: the heart of a secretive and cruel ape trade

“One Voice” has seen information according to which more than a thousand long-tailed macaques have been imported year after year and forwarded to our neighbors elsewhere in Europe.

For many years France has been, via the ‘Silabe Platform’ (near Strasbourg), a staging post for – and moreover a place for experiments on – thousands of primates from Mauritius and Vietnam en route to laboratories in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy, such as Accelera, Aptuit, Bayer AG, Covance and Merck, where they spend the rest of their sad lives subjected to experiments.

According to the research of the association“One Voice”, France is the hub for the international monkey trade and the heart of a secretive and cruel trade.

“Silabe” stands for Simian Laboratory Europe and was originally founded as a private company that benefited from government funds.

“Silabe” has already been at the heart of controversies, revelations, demonstrations, and campaigns, in particular by other French associations, which had found themselves up against a brick wall.

It is now part of the University of Strasbourg and takes the form of a national public educational establishment of a scientific, cultural, and professional nature (!!!)

Moreover, Silabe is only one stage in these transfers, among so many others.

Another question that needs to be answered: although the trade-in primates from Vietnam and Mauritius to Europe are allowed, why is France in general and the Silabe platform, in particular, a staging post?

Animal rights activists have been protesting against this laboratory for years.

The primates from Mauritius are often less than a year old.

Small, vulnerable babies weighing just 2 kg are packed in boxes and sent to Europe. The transport conditions are terrible and the journeys are often very long. Torn from the protection of their mothers, the young suffer from fear and stress.

And what can they expect? Life and death as a measuring instrument.

Holes are drilled in their heads, electrodes are inserted into their brains, or they are poisoned with chemicals or drugs.

Surviving monkeys are sometimes resold to other laboratories. In the end, there is always death.

Monkey breeding

From 10 November 2022, according to the EU Animal Experimentation Directive, all monkeys used in animal experiments may only come from self-sustaining or F2 breeding, i.e. the parents of the exported animals must have been born in captivity.

This applies to all the members of the EU, including France. It, therefore, strengthens the rules applying to the trade-in monkeys. But who is going to monitor it, especially in the countries where the animals are captured and bred for export?

The European regulations also stipulate that fewer animal procedures must be carried out in research in general.

But what is likely to happen?

“Silabe ” is only one stage in the global ape trade. For years, the number of animal experiments in France has stagnated at an extremely high level.
There is no transparency because in France not all animal experiment figures are published.

Help

-Please write to the embassy of Mauritius and Vietnam and ask for an end to the trade in monkeys for the laboratory.

Subject: Please stop the monkey trade of Mauritius!

Your Excellency,

as you know, your country is one of the world’s biggest exporters of primates for laboratories. Tens of thousands of macaques are held in captivity on farms throughout the country; their destination France and other countries.

Silabe, a facility that is part of the University of Strasbourg in France, imports macaques from the Republic of Mauritius. Many of these small primates are then sent to Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom for animal experimentation, whilst the rest remain at Silabe for the same reason.

Some brutally taken from the wild, kept in captivity, forced into endless breeding, their offspring subjected to long and risky journeys by road and air, painful tests, poisoning, and finally death. These long-tailed macaques endure terrible suffering, deprived of the rich foliage of the jungle homes and their family and social groups.

Together with One Voice and Action for Primates, I appeal to you to stop exporting monkeys for use in experiments.

Yours sincerely,

And I mean…It is brutal animal cruelty and the squandering of billions of taxpayers’ money.
Every day the conviction grows stronger and stronger we are ruled by unscrupulous criminals-mafia, who conduct their dubious business in a perverse way (also) in these animal experiments.

My best regards to all, Venus
