Emergency: Stop the Senseless Killing of Washington’s Wolves

As you read this, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) sharpshooters are taking to the sky to find and kill another endangered wolf – a member of the Wedge wolf pack – in response to depredation of cattle on grazing lands in Stevens County.

WDFW currently has an active kill order for the Togo wolf pack as well.

Science shows that killing a wolf can increase the risk that wolves will prey on livestock in the future. It is counterproductive and unsustainable.

Yet WDFW has resorted to killing wolves living in this same spot rugged forest land for years. In fact, they killed the original Wedge pack in 2012 for the very same reason. The original Wedge pack was accused of preying on livestock in the Colville National Forest eight years ago and, under Washington’s wolf management plan, the state opted to issue kill orders in an attempt to protect the livestock. The state killed the entire family of six state endangered wolves.

In the eight years since the original Wedge pack was destroyed, not much has changed. Livestock owners still graze their cows on rugged, forested public lands that are better suited for native ungulates, and WDFW is still killing wolves to benefit the profit margins of private businesses. In fact, 26 of the 31 state-endangered wolves that have been killed since 2012 were shot on behalf of the same livestock operator.

While it’s too late to protect the other 31 endangered wolves WDFW has gunned down since 2012, other Washington wolves still need our help.

Please take action to respectfully call on WDFW Director Kelly Susewind to immediately end the assault on Washington’s wolves.

Cameroon: The Ebo Forest must not be sacrificed

Dear friends of the rainforest,

The primatologist Bethan Morgan made a sensational discovery in 2002: she was the first scientist to spot gorillas in the Ebo forest. More than 200 kilometers away from relatives – pssibly a new subspecies!

The forest literally has it all: According to current research, the approximately 700 Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzees are the only ones worldwide who crack nuts with wooden stones and hammers and catch termites with sticks. In other regions, primates master only one of the two techniques.

For centuries, the population has lived in more than 40 villages in and around the Ebo Forest without endangering it. The locals see him as the land of the ancestors, go hunting there, fish, collect plants in the forest for their nutrition and medicine, and do farming on a small scale.
But nature and people’s livelihood are in danger!

The Cameroon government has converted 150,000 hectares of the Ebo Forest into two logging concessions, an area twice the size of Hamburg. The population was neither consulted nor informed, and their rights to their ancestral land and their say were ignored.

Logging would result in devastating ecological, social and climatological damage, as it is often the first step in the extensive destruction of ecosystems. It is followed by poachers, settlers and land speculators. Villagers lose their livelihood and are more exposed to new diseases.

The population, scientists and environmentalists are alarmed and are fighting for the protection of the Ebo forest and the livelihood of the locals. Please support this with your signature.

Two subspecies of gorilla are found in Cameroon, the Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and a small population of Cross River gorillas (Gorilla Gorilla diehli). Between these two populations, there is a third isolated Ebo population, completely cut-off from other sub-species, with no other populations found within a 200 kilometer (125 mile) radius. Background information: More than 160 species of birds live in the Ebo Forest; many of them are endemic and do not occur anywhere else in the world. The same applies to at least twelve plant species known to science.  Despite intensive research work, the full range of species is far from being recorded.

We’ll Go to Court to Save Northwest Grizzlies

Hi Mark,

The administration’s war on grizzly bears just took an ugly turn.

After being denied its wish to make Yellowstone grizzlies the targets of trophy hunts, the administration is abandoning grizzly recovery in Washington’s North Cascades.

We can’t allow it to drop a plan to recover this iconic species, so we let the Interior Department and National Park Service know we intend to sue.

You can help our legal battle for grizzlies with a gift to the Saving Life on Earth Fund.

The North Cascades is one of the largest wild areas in the lower 48. Its mix of glaciers, mountains, forests, lakes and rivers creates one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the country — and is excellent habitat for grizzly bears, which once thrived there.

Scientists believe the North Cascades could support 280 grizzlies. But today there may be as few as two.

For grizzlies to fully recover in the United States, there must be a robust, healthy population in the North Cascades. But the administration is throwing out a recovery plan for bears in this region. So we’re taking legal action to overturn its disastrous move.

Earlier this month we prevailed in our fight for Yellowstone grizzlies after the administration tried to strip away their Endangered Species Act protection so states could hold trophy hunts.

While Yellowstone’s bears are safe for now, the fight for grizzlies is not over.

To trash a plan to help grizzlies survive again in an ecosystem that even the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recognizes as a primary recovery area is a political giveaway to anti-wildlife forces. It’s also illegal.

We can’t fight the extinction crisis if keystone species like grizzly bears aren’t a part of rich, biodiverse ecosystems like the North Cascades.

We’ll see the administration in court if it doesn’t reverse its decision.

Please support our fight for grizzlies with a gift to the Saving Life on Earth Fund.

For the wild,

Kierán Suckling

Climate change: Polar bears could be lost by 2100

By Helen Briggs and Victoria GillScience and environment correspondent, BBC News

Polar bears will be wiped out by the end of the century unless more is done to tackle climate change, a study predicts.

Scientists say some populations have already reached their survival limits as the Arctic sea ice shrinks.

The carnivores rely on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean to hunt for seals.

As the ice breaks up, the animals are forced to roam for long distances or on to shore, where they struggle to find food and feed their cubs.

The bear has become the “poster child of climate change”, said Dr Peter Molnar of the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada.

“Polar bears are already sitting at the top of the world; if the ice goes, they have no place to go,” he said.

Polar bears are listed as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with climate change a key factor in their decline.

polar bear thin

Studies show that declining sea ice is likely to decrease polar bear numbers, perhaps substantially. The new study, published in Nature Climate Change, puts a timeline on when that might happen.

By modelling the energy use of polar bears, the researchers were able to calculate their endurance limits.

Dr Steven Amstrup, chief scientist of Polar Bears International, who was also involved in the study, told BBC News: “What we’ve shown is that, first, we’ll lose the survival of cubs, so cubs will be born but the females won’t have enough body fat to produce milk to bring them along through the ice-free season.

“Any of us know that we can only go without food for so long,” he added, “that’s a biological reality for all species”.

polar bears melting ise

The researchers were also able to predict when these thresholds will be reached in different parts of the Arctic. This may have already happened in some areas where polar bears live, they said.

“Showing how imminent the threat is for different polar bear populations is another reminder that we must act now to head off the worst of future problems faced by us all,” said Dr Amstrup.

“The trajectory we’re on now is not a good one, but if society gets its act together, we have time to save polar bears. And if we do, we will benefit the rest of life on Earth, including ourselves.”

Under a high greenhouse gas emissions scenario, it’s likely that all but a few polar bear populations will collapse by 2100, the study found. And even if moderate emissions reduction targets are achieved, several populations will disappear.

The findings match previous projections that polar bears are likely to persist to 2100 only in a few populations very far north if climate change continues unabated.

Sea ice is frozen seawater that floats on the ocean surface, forming and melting with the polar seasons. Some persists year after year in the Arctic, providing vital habitat for wildlife such as polar bears, seals, and walruses.

Sea ice that stays in the Arctic for longer than a year has been declining at a rate of about 13% per decade since satellite records began in the late 1970s.

England: China risking new pandemic even more deadly than COVID as hotbed for new viruses exposed.

China risking new pandemic even more deadly than COVID as hotbed for new viruses exposed

CHINESE factory farming is creating the perfect environment for “the mutation and amplification of new viruses” and unless conditions improve “this pandemic will not be the last one”, a leading scientist has warned.

Global Head of Research and Animal Welfare for Animals in Farming Kate Blaszak described the growth of intensive farming units not just in China but across the world and pointed to them as having the potential to both increase antibiotic resistance and create a deadlier pathogen than COVID-19. Speaking to Express.co.uk Ms Blaszak said: “China is incubating two new strains of bird flu. It is also dealing with an outbreak of swine flu, which is a mixture of human, pig, and avian influenza viruses.

“These different viruses mixed together to form a very potent pathogen.

“The current swine flu virus that has broken out in China has the potential to bind very successfully in the human throat and respiratory system.”

The veterinary scientist said in the last ten to 15 years China has seen a vast and rapid shift away from traditional farming practices and is now emulating the US model of high-intensity farming were animals are kept in dark, confined environments.

Ms Blaszak described the new factory farming system in China as lacking regulations and operating with very poor animal welfare principles.

A duck farm in China

A duck farm in China (Image: GETTY)

The hundreds of millions of animals contained within the new factory systems are under so much stress that is lowering their immune systems making them need constant feeds of antibiotics to stay healthy and alive.

Ms Blaszak said: “These kinds of low welfare environments lower animals immunities and allows viruses to propagate.

“They create the perfect scenario for the mixing of viruses and the mutation and amplification of viruses.”

She added waste from farms, the movement of large amounts of animals and the processing of animals are also a risk to humans.

The scientist warned of the high risk of animal to human infections from having live animals at wet markets.

A chicken farm in China

A chicken farm in China (Image: GETTY)

The cause for concern in China is the fact that it is moving towards a US model of intensified meat production, where the majority of animals are factory farmed.

China is the biggest pig producer in the world and the second-biggest chicken producer in the world.

Ms Blaszak describes how the high numbers of high density, genetically uniform animals are the perfect conditions for another virus to propagate that could potentially jump to humans.

The animals that are genetically uniform and crammed side by side need yearly inoculations to protect them against the ravages of quickly mutating viruses.

It takes a long time and considerable expense to develop vaccines for the new viruses being formed, and when a vaccine comes out it is not long before it must be changed because of the rapid mutation of these influenza viruses.

Furthermore, because 75 percent of antibiotics are used in the rearing of farm animals there is the added risk of creating extremely resistant bacteria.

Much of these antibiotics are used to promote growth rather than cure illness.

Ms Blaszak said: “Without huge amounts of anti-biotics a lot of animals would be unwell and die and these intensified farming systems would not work.

A pig factory in China

A pig ‘factory’ in China

“So, antibiotics just prop up the system for the next pandemic.”

However, Ms Blaszak said: “To be fair China is banning the use of antibiotics in animal food and water at the end of 2020.”

Since 2018 African swine flu, which originated in factory farms in Mexico, has wiped out the vast majority of smallholder pig farmers in China.

This then accelerated the intensity of farming practices in china.

Ms Blaszak stated the need to improve the welfare standard of animals and move away from a factory farming system, “so we can take the pressure off meat production by reducing the consumption of meat”.

She added: “We need to do this otherwise this pandemic will not be the last one.”

Since 2016 China has made some significant polices in moving away from overt meat consumption and improving food sustainability in the country.

Ms Blaszak added that the whole world should rethink their consumption of meat.

She said: “The world should move away from intensive farming systems and improve the welfare standards of animals.

“There should be a reduction in the consumption of meat.”

Kate Blaszak works for World Animal Protection and is World Animal Protection’s Global Head of Research and Animal Welfare for Farmed Animals.

Turkey: Two videos show brown bears tortured by hunters.

Turkey: Two videos show brown bears tortured by hunters

In recent weeks, two videos showing hunters shooting or torturing bears have caused outrage in Turkey. Animal rights groups denounce laws protecting this species that are not strict enough and a feeling of impunity among hunting enthusiasts, who are relatively few in the country.

Both videos circulated in WhatsApp groups before being reported to the Turkish association Haytap (Federation for Animal Rights – Turkey), which posted them on its Facebook page on 9 and 12 July.

The first video shows a bear visibly injured and covered in blood in the head and upper
body. There are at least two male voices commenting on the scene, one of them commands a dog: “Attack, attack”. A dog then bites the bear, followed by a second. At one point, a hunter armed with a rifle can be seen walking a few metres from the bear, who does not shoot to finish off the injured animal.
According to the Haytap association, the scene took place about two months ago in the village of Arhavi, in the northeastern province of Artvin.

The second video shows two men holding the corpse of a class and having fun hitting his head while uttering insults.

According to Haytap, the video was also filmed about two months ago in the village of Agaçseven, in Trabzon province, also in the north-east of the

country. One of the shoemakers refers to the beginning of the video to the Ramadan period, which took place from April 23 to May 23. Both videos have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on social media and have been the subject of several television topics.

“These hunters take pleasure in torturing animals”

The Haytap association has filed a complaint against these hunters and hopes to obtain firm prison sentences against them, thus creating a legal precedent. Ahmet Kemal Senpolat is President of Haytap and lawyer:
For each of the videos, we filed a complaint against two individuals, thanks to the report of the inhabitants. Bears are protected by law in Turkey, there are about 3,000 left and are mainly located in the Northern Black Sea region where both videos were filmed.
We hope that this time the law will be enforced and that they will receive firm prison sentences, not simple fines as is the case when there are cases of torture against domestic animals such as cats or
dogs.
The videos are terrible and show, in our opinion, that these hunters take pleasure in torturing
animals. In Turkey, there is a great deal of sensitivity on these issues and it was villagers from these regions who saw the videos circulated on WhatsApp groups who reported them to us. They did not dare to raise the alarm themselves for fear of reprisals from the hunters. Despite the precautions they took, they told us that they still received threats when both cases were published in the open and the videos were broadcast on television.

“These conflicts could be avoided if their natural habitat were preserved”

Yagci is a member of another Turkish animal rights association, Hakim (HAKIM Animal Rights Monitoring Committee), of the Turkish TvD Vegan Association and a documentary filmmaker.
We are fortunate in Turkey to still have several thousand wild bears living in the wild [in 2019, there were 52 bears in France]but unfortunately their habitat is quickly nibbled by human activities such as the construction of infrastructure such as dams or roads.
When I was shooting a documentary in Kars (eastern Turkey), I saw bears regularly crossing a railway track to fetch food from a
landfill. Often these bears were hit by trains and environmental activists told me that they were trying to rescue them, to no avail.
Sometimes hunters say they kill bears because there is a conflict between humans and animals, but we believe that these so-called “conflicts” could be avoided if humans preserved their natural habitat.
We regularly carry out awareness campaigns against hunting and they are successful, the Turks are sensitive to the cause of animals and reject any form of abuse, including
hunting. But unfortunately the laws do not follow this trend and, until recently, a law had to be proposed to vote to expand the number of species hunted and facilitate hunting tourism. The process was eventually postponed.

Dr. Medicine Slavica Mazak Bešlić – A Dear Animal Campaigner Friend Lost Today.

Today, 17/7/20 I have been sent a very sad message from friends and welfare people, Branka and Pavel, who operate ARKA in Serbia.  The message reads:

Dear Mark,

We are so sorry to inform you that Slavica (EPAR) died Yesterday morning at 3h30’.

Recently, apart of her main illness, she fell and broke thigh bone. She had to go to the hospital for the surgery, unfortunately she didn’t recover.

She really loved animals and did so much for them, we’ll miss her very much.

Regards, Branka and Pavel
ARKA

Slavica first made contact with me back in 2004; and after deciding on a campaign route; ‘Serbian Animals Voice’ was formed.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-us/

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-serbian-animals/

Slavica and I were in almost daily contact re the situation for animals in Serbia.  She was in Serbia; and I was in England; so communication (language) to get the correct message out on SAV was not an easy thing in those early days.  It was very much a case of info coming in check – draft and send to Slavica for the ok.  Only once that we were both happy with the content did we publish our data.

Two very large campaigns we worked on was to try and prevent the construction of a ski lift facility at Stara Planina – here are some links:

This was not about stray animals, but an environmental issue we fought:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2009/08/15/serbia-campaign-to-save-flora-and-fauna-at-stara-planina/

We battled with the EU about environmental issues at Stara; again, they did not want to take action regarding the endangered species (wildlife) lists we had provided.

In the end it was not good news – corruption won; but we did help with some other victories:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2014/02/15/serbia-150214-update-zvezadra-forest-park-has-now-been-saved-thanks-to-biologist-dr-miroslav-demajo-and-all-his-supporters-great-news/

serb sheep 3

Another issue we very much got involved with was regarding the export of live sheep to Israel.  The Serbian government denied that there was any involvement with Serbia and the exported sheep; so much so that attempted to make threats against all who were involved and exposing the business.  With help and advice and input from Salavica, I chased up the issue at the EU – see more here:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2015/09/21/england-sav-now-write-to-eu-commissioner-hahn-regarding-serbia-israeli-live-animal-transport/

You have to remember that the Serbian government made many threats to animal activists; and that included closing down Slavica’s stray dog shelter.  But all was not lost, in the end the Serbian government were forced (under activists pressure) to come clean and tell the EU that the exported sheep DID originate and get exported from Serbia.  This was confirmed in a letter from the EU to Mark, which you can read below:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2015/10/20/serbia-it-now-appears-the-sheep-exported-live-to-israel-were-from-serbia-despite-the-threats/

So you see, if you know you are right with what you say, you have to take chances and fight the fight; all the way.  This issue of sheep exports was a big win for us; especially Slavica, who was so very involved, despite the government threats to close down her shelter.

We also worked together re the animals at Palic Zoo in Serbia; and especially relating to a brown bear which was kept in a very confined environment.  Here we worked with the Born Free group in London who had set up reports on animal zoos across the EU.  See it here:

Slavica was a fantastic person to know; and an even better campaigner.  I am proud to have been able to call her a good friend and to have been involved with her fighting to improve the welfare of animals in Serbia..  As well as her dedication to animals rights, Slavica was also a medical doctor.  Slavica worked as the senior / manager of the department for tumours at the city hospital in Subotica (Serbia) for over 15 years.

She undertook numerous operations associated with tumours in gynecology, such as the Wertheim – Meigs technique.

She operated her own private gynecology facility known as “Ginekos”, within Subotica city, Serbia.

Slavica has always supported animal welfare / rights and allocated the vast majority of the finances from her gynecology speciality into funding the construction and operations of stray dog and cat shelters, and she often had to endure personal attack, criticism and negative experiences from many of the local authorities around the Subotica area.

Slavica endured personal criticism of her work for the animals by others working within administration departments of Belgrade City authority.

With massive input from Slavica; and using SAV as an information tool; we also managed to get the illegal hell hole (VUK) zoo at Novi Pazar closed down.  You can see the conditions in which the animals were illegally kept in the following:

– Subotica, Serbian Republic

Slavica is the President of the organisation EPAR, which is based in Subotica, Serbia.  In 2010, Slavica stopped running the animal shelter part of EPAR, which was called Friend – EPAR.  The animal shelter section of EPAR has now been taken over by a lady named Adriana.  Friend – EPAR shelter was the biggest No Kill shelter in Serbia; and this policy is now continuing through Adriana.

Adriana has now given a new name to the shelter that she works with; the old Friend – EPAR shelter.  This shelter is now called (shelter) ALEX.

Slavica continues to run EPAR as an organisation, but this is now specifically dedicated to more legal matters such as campaigning for the implementation of existing national legislation; bringing charges against those who are illegally doing cruelty to animals, and charges against hunters, environmental destruction work etc.

Important – the links below show many photographs of the old Friend – EPAR shelter.

Here below are some old photograph links to what was originally Friend – EPAR shelter, and which is now called ALEX:

Slavica is a medical doctor with specialist practice in gynecology and obstetrics, and a superspecialist for untrasound techniques in gynecology.

Slavica worked as the senior / manager of the department for tumors at the city hospital in Subotica (Serbia) for over 15 years.

She has undertaken numerous operations associated with tumors in gynecology, such as the Wertheim – Meigs technique.

She now operates her own private gynecology facility known as “Ginekos”, still within Subotica city.

Slavica has endured personal criticism of her work for the animals by others working within administration departments of Belgrade City authority.

Slavica shares her home with animals that she has rescued from the local streets as strays.

Slavica was a great personal friend and an even better campaigner friend for all the animals.  She lived her life to the full in so many ways and tried to make Serbia a better place for animals.

I close by saying if there were a lot more ‘Slavica’s’ in the world, then it would be a much better place.

Today 15/7/20 – in India alone it is sending 375million people back into lockdown as country suffers record spike of 29,429 NEW coronavirus cases with total infections nearing one million.

Where is this video below from ? – yes, showing Indian wet markets !! – the very first scenes (for a few seconds) say a lot.

Why cant they at least make a link in this case ? – we know 2+2=4;

but governments around the world appear to come up with 37 or something similar – why ?

– don’t they want to really address the root cause of the issue; and better still, do something about it, or not ? – there is not much to show the issues being addressed at present.

I am lost really with the complete government ignorance; what else do you do but try by showing stull like this above; but to no avail.  They are governments; they know better than mere mortals.

The future of our oceans – YOUR DECISION

sea shepeard logojpg

“If something is really important, you do it, even if the odds are not in your favor”.

The question is whether you want to tell your grandchildren that they can only see a certain animal species as an image in a book or on a computer or on TV because you didn’t have the courage to get up and change something.

There are already many animal species in our oceans that are extinct or are on the brink of extinction.

Without organizations like Sea Shepherd, who patrol the waters in collaboration with many governments and at the forefront, illegal fishing could wipe out many more species. It is the short-sightedness and greed of a few who drive this development, but it is the large mass of people who watch and make it happen.

As far as we know, there are now less than 30 bottlenose dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico. Most of their fellows were killed as by-catches in the networks of illegal fishermen.

There are only around 55 Maui dolphins and less than 9000 Hector dolphins left off the coast of New Zealand. This means a decline of 80-90% of the stock in the past 50 years, mainly due to death from fishing nets and lines.

Both species have a very slow reproductive rate, with sexual maturity only being reached at 7 to 9 years. They have a calf only every 2 to 4 years and suffer from a high mortality rate among newborns.

What can you do?

In addition to refraining from eating seafood, you can submit petitions to strengthen marine parks and the legal protection of all marine life. Call for compliance with and enforcement of all existing laws against illegal, unregulated, and undocumented fishing.

Support organizations like Sea Shepherd that are at the forefront of IUU fishing and poaching.

Decide now to make a change because tomorrow it might be too late.

OPERATION MILAGRO to protect bottlenose dolphins is carried out by Sea Shepherd in the USA and OPERATION PAHU to protect the Maui and Hector dolphins by Sea Shepherd in New Zealand.

And I mean…”You are not only responsible for what you do, but also for what you don’t do”.
So I had read it somewhere.

When I made a conscious decision to fight for animal rights and do everything possible to combat injustice against the “other” animals, my mother asked me one day:
“YOU will save the world?”
Today I can answer: “Yes! who else?”
Those who fight can lose, but those who don’t fight have already lost.

My best regards to all, Venus
