It’s time to pick the most outrageous eco-villain of 2019, and we need your help.

See our nominees and click here to cast your vote.

For years we’ve given out our Rubber Dodo Award to spotlight those who are destroying wild places, driving species extinct, and tearing down the planet’s life-support system. Named after the most famous extinct species on Earth, this award does not come with a cash prize.

Last year, of course, the Dodo went to President Donald J. Trump — a no-brainer.

Previous recipients of the faux-accolade include Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke (2017), Utah Congressman Rob Bishop (2016), Monsanto (2015), USDA’s Wildlife Services (2014), the Koch Brothers (2013), Sen. James Inhofe (2012), BP’s Tony Hayward (2010) and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (2008).

Who wins the Rubber Eco Dodo Award ? – Is It :

David Bernhardt: For suppressing data showing pesticides harm at least 1,400 protected species, Trump’s interior secretary was under inspector-general investigation just four days after he got the job. A longtime lobbyist for polluters, he’s worked for decades to weaken the Endangered Species Act. As our interior secretary, he’s the ultimate fox guarding the henhouse. Bernhardt has launched an all-out attack on protections for America’s wildlife.

Donald Trump, Jr.: Donald the Younger’s never met an endangered species he doesn’t love to cuddle — once it’s dead. A trophy hunter of African elephants, leopards and Cape buffalo, he likes to have his picture taken with their bodies (once, holding an elephant’s severed tail). Recently, in Mongolia, he killed a threatened argali sheep — a species whose population had dropped 50% between 1985 and 2009.

trump1.jpg

Andrew Wheeler: Former coal lobbyist, now-Environmental Protection Agency chief, Wheeler apparently likes clean air and water about as much as David Bernhardt likes wildlife. A seasoned Beltway insider, he’s rescinded Obama’s Clean Power Plan, brutally overruled scientists, and gutted auto fuel-efficiency standards. He’s also slashed Clean Water Act protections, freeing up industry to destroy wetlands and dump toxic waste into streams across the United States.

Stephen Miller: This far-right advisor to the president is like the long-lost brain Trump never had. Sadly, that brain is racist. Miller has guided American immigration policy into the realm of outright inhumanity. His whispers in Trump’s ear are likely behind a ban on immigrants from Muslim countries, a shameful practice of removing children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border, and construction of a destructive border wall across precious wilderness.

Australia: upcoming murder of 10,000 camels

australian-flag-

As The Australian reports, 10,000 camels will be shot over five days from Wednesday. This will happen in the local administrative area of Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY), an Aboriginal community in the state of South Australia. The area is two and a half times the size of Switzerland, but only around 2500 people live in the area.

The order to fire was given because the camels are increasingly ruthlessly entering residential areas in search of water during the continuing drought.

“The camels come to our village, tear down fences and look for water in the air conditioning systems in the houses,” Marita Baker, an APY resident, told The Australian.

That’s why the camels have to die now. The Ministry of Environment and Water will go camel hunting by helicopter. The carcasses are burned or buried and left behind in remote areas.

Camels as scapegoats

However, the aggressive behavior of the animals is not the only reason to minimize their number. Another factor is the enormous CO2 emissions of the desert animals. A ton of carbon dioxide is said to produce and emit a single camel in a year.

“One million camels are the equivalent of 400,000 additional cars on the road.”
Is that correct?

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assumes that a camel has about one sixth of a car’s CO2 emissions. The total emissions from these animals would still correspond to around 200,000 vehicles, since an estimated 1.2 million wild camels live in Australia.

kamelen australiaeg

The animals were brought by the English colonist into the country more than 150 years ago imported from India and Afghanistan as a means of transport for the desert. With the invention of the car, they became redundant and left in their fate-  and now have developed into a veritable nuisance (!!!). They would also drink the few waterholes empty.

kamelen australienpg
An additional incentive for the campaign against the camels is, according to the Spiegel report, the fact that Australia urgently needs emission certificates. The country has one of the highest air pollution levels per capita in the world because of its large mining industry.
The country currently ranks third last in the climate protection index of the environmental organization Germanwatch. “Only Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia are doing even less against global warming.”

https://www.watson.ch/international/umwelt/117990463-australien-wegen-duerre-muessen-10-000-kamele-geschossen-werden

Also an interesting article about the Australian fires:https://www.rt.com/op-ed/477667-climate-change-australia-fires/

My comment:  I see that the camels have to be shot down (partly) because of the greenhouse gases they emit (although ruminant emissions are part of the natural carbon cycle).
In contrast, it appears to be environmentally friendly for Australia to burn huge tons of coal in China every year, causing millions of times more climate damage than all the camels on the planet.

That`s another clever Australian move – Sheep, cattle, dogs, coalas, kangaroos, birds, etc – they all need water too. But they murder kangaroos, because they eat the sheep’s grass! Why not shoot all animals ?

Thanks to Indians and Afghans who helped colonize the continent, camels are now an invasive species – what a shitty thought…
Couldn’t Scott Morrison be seen as an invasive species?

Australia is a screwed up country! If Australia’s attitude to climate protection does not change, all of Australia will soon be made up of coal.

Best regards to all, Venus

Australia: what have we learned from this?

australien Mensch mit Hund

Every summer, in the drought and hot season, there are more fires in Australia
But never one like this Dante hell.

An area about the size of Austria has turned into ashes.
The flames continue to swallow animals, nature, houses, people.
The air stinks of burnt meat.
Australia is among the top ten polluters on the planet. The consequences of a policy that has destroyed the country are now getting.
However, the deadly effects of this policy do not hit the main culprits.
As always, they meet the innocent.
The animals.

australien kangourujpg

Sidney University estimates that 480 million mammals, birds, reptiles … are burned alive.
According to the university, many Australian animal species have been eradicated.
But the prognoses are even darker, because the final count can affect up to 1 trillion animal losses due to starvation of the survivors.

The voters, the supporters and the Government followers are complicit.
As Prime Minister, they have chosen a climate denier and a passionate supporter of the coal industry!
There is no such thing as “innocence” in politics; wrong political decisions are paid dearly, at the latest now the Australians should feel it.

The elected conservative government has pursued a miserable policy.
It introduced drastic austerity measures, drastically reduced contributions to social security, which above all meant misery and distress for the fire brigade because the firefighters used beggars and donations to provide their equipment and work clothes themselves.
At the same time, the Morrison government has given free rein to multinationals interested in theft and exploitation of nature.

Australien-minnenpg

While the country was turning to ashes, Morrison was on vacation in Miami, and instead of discussing the situation with fire chief Greg Mullins, he posed with the cricket team in front of the House of Parliament because something like that sells best to voters.

Australia-768x576

The sky in New South Wales has disappeared, say the locals. A dome with sick, yellowish nicotine color hangs over their head, which at dusk takes on the color of the blood.

The worst thing is that we have learned nothing from this biblical catastrophe, and nothing is being done until today about the destruction of the earth. We distribute photos, comments, videos and suffer from collective self-pity. That’s all!

Human being is the only animal on the planet that learns nothing from its mistake.
And the biggest mistake we make is believing that only Australia has to learn from this devastating environmental disaster.

Our “ethics”, which puts ourselves above everything, runs against the wall.

USA: CALIFORNIA BECOMES THE FIRST STATE IN THE US TO BAN ANIMAL COSMETICS TESTING – and England – Dolma Cruelty Free Perfumes.

usa-flagge-im-grunge-stil-auf-einem-weißen-hintergrund

CALIFORNIA BECOMES THE FIRST STATE IN THE US TO BAN ANIMAL COSMETICS TESTING

A new law, designed to end the needless suffering animals endure during cosmetics testing, went into effect on January 1, 2020, helping ensure the importation and sale of California’s cosmetics are cruelty-free.
Former Gov. Jerry Brown enacted the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act back in 2018. It bans California-based manufacturers from importing or selling beauty products that have been tested on, or contain ingredients previously tested on, animals. This is the first such law in the United States.
Companies breaking the new law will be fined $5,000 with an extra $1,000 charge for each subsequent day the violation continues.
“We are proud to have led the effort to pass this monumental law,” said one of the sponsors on the bill, founder and president of Social Compassion in Legislation Judie Mancuso. “Animal testing is not needed to prove the safety of cosmetics and personal hygiene products, and this new law codifies that scientific fact. We must modernize and get rid of these antiquated protocols and stop torturing poor innocent animals. Once again, our great state of California is a leader on such important, smart and compassionate animal rights issues.”
A number of other animal protection measures are also set to come into effect in California this year, including three bills signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newson in 2019, which prohibit the use of wild animals in circus performances, ban fur trapping and the sale of fur products, and reintroduce a ban on importing or selling products crafted from crocodiles and alligators.

The Human Being – Something To Be Proud Of ???

I hate the human race; and sadly having to fit the description.  They claim superiority and a ‘superior being’ type ‘master of all’ status; whilst in my opinion; they are in fact the masters of destruction and the primary cause of abuse of many kinds on this planet; and that is nothing to be ‘superior’ or proud about.

Please watch this video (link below) and then tell me that I am wrong !

Australia: Jumping Into Action – Wildfire News From Animals Australia.

Australian flag painted by brush hand paints. Art Aussie flag. Watercolor flag. Australia art vector flag.

Mark, we’ve greeted the new year with aching hearts as we watch our beautiful country burn.

Like so many, I’m reminded of the continuing crisis by the smell of smoke and the haze that hangs in the air. I know many of you, our closest supporters, live in the areas impacted by these devastating fires. And I know that some of you will have lost all that is dear in recent days and weeks. My thoughts and prayers have constantly been with you, and, of course, with the animals who have suffered and perished on an incomprehensible scale.

I’m writing with a critical update, and to let you know that our action plan has been enacted. Our team has been working to ensure that animals receive the help they need, and that the courageous individuals assisting them on the frontline are also provided with relief.

Getting vets to the firegrounds

Bound for fire devastated Mallacoota and Tallangata, Dr Elaine Ong and Dr Chris Barton, from Vets for Compassion, with medical supplies and drugs to join the local carers.

The most critical need at present is getting qualified disaster-response vets on the ground to assist the animal survivors. The best way we can currently support animals is to help make this happen, as soon as possible.

We have been liaising with key organisations who can deploy teams to firegrounds where animals need them. Access is very difficult in most areas, and some continue to be impacted by fires that aren’t yet under control.

Yesterday, we flew specialist wildlife vets from Vets for Compassion to Mallacoota to assist animals and wildlife carers in the region. We are also providing financial support to two other veterinary emergency response teams. The South Australian Veterinary Emergency Management (SAVEM), who have been deployed to Kangaroo Island, where catastrophic fires have had a devastating impact. And, in NSW, to Vets Beyond Borders, who are mobilising vets to firegrounds throughout the state.

We are hoping, through this appeal, to also provide these organisations with two off-road vehicles that they will need to access firegrounds as part of their search-and-rescue operation, which will be ongoing for weeks, if not months.

We are doing everything possible to ensure all animals receive the help they need as soon as possible — whether they are ‘farmed’, wildlife or domestic pets.

You can support these initiatives by donating here.

Getting help to wildlife carers

wild carer aus.jpg

We want to support the many selfless individuals who have dedicated their lives to caring for our native wildlife. Many of them have either been directly impacted by the fires, or are preparing to be inundated in the coming weeks as survivors are found. There will be a long-term need to support wildlife as their habitat ranges and food sources have been destroyed. Much of this work will be carried out by volunteer carers, and we won’t forget them.

Animals Australia will provide significant funding to the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife, to boost their grant program for wildlife groups across the country. This organisation will provide equitable grants to wildlife carers who are affected by the fires and need assistance.

You can support these initiatives by donating here

Our CEO, Glenys Oogjes, and I will remain in touch with both state and federal government agencies to ensure that emergency plans are enacted, and that animals are made a priority. We will also work closely with, and financially support, the Australian Veterinary Association as needed — to enable vets and supplies to rapidly reach the firegrounds.

Mark, while this is such a distressing time, everywhere we look we are seeing the very best of humanity — communities supporting each other, opening up their homes and properties, offering anything and everything they have to help others.

And, as thousands have been forced to flee for their lives, we see firefighters running toward the danger — literally into deadly fires. Tragically, some will never return. The bravery, compassion and sacrifice of emergency services workers is unmatched, and we stand with the rest of Australia in extending our deepest gratitude to them.

If you are able to assist our efforts to help animals on the firegrounds, and the humans who are helping them, you can donate here. All of the money raised through this appeal will be immediately channelled into bushfire response initiatives.

My team and I have been overwhelmed by your generosity and support — your emails, phone calls and messages — not just within Australia, but from all around the world. Please know that there are so many others like you who care deeply for the beautiful animals we share this planet with, and that united, as a compassionate collective, we are giving them the very best chance.

P.S. Our deepest gratitude to those of you who have already donated to support this bushfire crisis — whether through this appeal, or others. I know there have been many of you who have already shown incredible generosity that will help alleviate suffering. We will continue to keep you up to date as the days progress

New Zealand: civil courage save lives

new-zealand-flag

Overwhelming action: A group of pilot whales stranded in New Zealand. Vacationers and locals followed the call for help from environmentalists – and were able to save the majority of the animals from death.

gestrandeter-wal-in-neuseeland-

Seven stranded whales survived in New Zealand thanks to the spontaneous use of hundreds of helpers. Around a thousand volunteers followed a call and came to Matarangi Beach on the North Island, the environmental group Jonah said on Saturday. The stranded short-finned pilot whales were pulled back into the sea during the next flood. However, four more whales did not survive.

The short-finned pilot whales were stranded off the Coromandel Peninsula. The environmentalists tried to bring the seven surviving whales back into the water and published a call for help on the online service Facebook.

About a thousand locals and holidaymakers then hurried to the beach and looked after the helpless animals for hours. Jonah spoke of an overwhelming response.

According to the New Zealand environmental protection agency, seven whales on the beach were able to survive until they were able to be pulled into deeper waters by several boats during the next flood. Four more whales would be buried by agency officials.

The rescued pilot whales have been “healthy swimming and actively observed,” a spokesman for New Zealand’s DOC told the New Zealand Herald.
“We hope that they stay in the sea.”
Local residents and tourists should check out the port of Matarangi in the coming days to see if some of the whales land on the beach again.

In New Zealand, whales are always stranded. Long-finned pilot whales, which are closely related to short-finned pilot whales, are particularly affected. Two years ago, more than 330 pilot whales died in a similar incident in southern New Zealand.

And I mean…Everyone can imagine the joy and relief of the brave and active rescuers as soon as they could see the animals at the sea happy and free again.

This is another confirmation of the success we can achieve through the collaboration. Together we can achieve a lot for the animals.

Many thanks to all active helpers!

While Australia goes up in flames –Norwegian energy company Equinor given environmental approval to drill for oil on Australia’s coasts!

Australien-1

The Norwegian oil giant Equinor has just received approval from the regulatory agency NOPSEMA to drill in the Great Australian Bight, which directly contradicts strong public opinion. There are many reasons why drilling for oil in the bay should not be done – one reason you can see in the photo:

Australien-21Foto: D. Schreier-Great Australian Bight

The isolation and the different currents created a rich biodiversity in the shelf, which is also protected as national parks in places. Not only whales frolic here, but also the endangered pygmy penguins. After the region was already exploited by the fish industry for tuna, a unique bay ecosystem has emerged in the bay, whether starfish or seahorse or the many different types of seabirds that have settled here.

And now Australia plans to sink one million tons of sewage sludge into the Great Barrier Reef!

Nemo-.Australia jpgFoto: D. Schreier- Nemo

In this bush fire area in Australia, an area of more than 1.1 million hectares has already been destroyed.
The Blue Montain is also affected by the bush fires.
By now, 25% are said to have been destroyed and it was only on December 17, 2019 that the three political representatives of the Blue Mountains asked the government of New South Wales to provide immediate help to the region in the event of forest fires.

Australien-53-768x576Foto: D. Schreier- Blue Montain

Australia burns out of greed!

More and more scientists from Australia have long warned of overexploitation and pollution in Australia.

But as deputy prime minister Michael McCormack claims according to SBSnews from October 29, 2019, mining brings in a lot of money – so protests are not welcome!
The International Mining and Resources Conference is Australia’s largest annual industry event and attracts delegates from the fields of resources, investments and technology.
More than 7,000 delegates from around 100 countries attend the three-day conference – while Australia goes up in flames.

Australien-22

Hundreds of climate protesters have tried to prevent an international mining conference in Melbourne in late October 2019.
50 people were arrested and at least four hospitalized.

Criminal!! – Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack urged the media not to report on these protests!

Despite the many disasters affecting Australia, the corrupt government says stronger environmental action is crippling its economy, and even the Norwegian energy company is now receiving the second and most significant of four regulatory approvals from the federal offshore oil regulator before drilling started can be.

My comment:It is the time of general corruption, the time of universal buyability.
It is the time when even things that until then have been communicated, but never exchanged, given, but never sold, acquired but never bought, when in one word, everything became a matter of trade: virtue, love, conviction, knowledge, Conscience, etc.
The time in which every object, whether physical or moral, is brought onto the market as a commodity to be estimated at its exchange value” (Karl Marx).

Veganuary isn’t a fad or trendy diet – it’s a chance to live a more ethical life.

Veganuary isn’t a fad or trendy diet – it’s a chance to live a more ethical life

https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/vegan-diet-trend-plant-based-eating-ethical-life-veganuary-a9270241.html

It is common knowledge that giving up or cutting down on meat and dairy is the right thing to do for the sake of our planet. Veganism deserves better than eyebrow-raises from the media

Two days into Veganuary and the head-scratching confusion over just exactly what veganism is continues. The perception of veganism as a diet or passing fad has somehow clung on in the health pages of our newspapers, in cookery columns, and in the miniature portions meted out to vegans in pubs across the land.

There is a continual debate in the media about whether ‘the diet’ is healthy. This is beside the point. There is a stream of misinformation designed to trick people into believing that vegetarianism and veganism are simply not possible. This madness must stop, and it’s extraordinary that it has endured this long.

It is, or should be common knowledge by now, that giving up or cutting down on meat and dairy is the right thing to do for the sake of our planet. Bush fires are raging in Australia; the Great Barrier Reef is seriously degraded; Antarctica is melting into the sea. Yes, lacking vitamin B12 is bad for me, but – not to get too Greta Thunberg about it – so is the loss of an area of rainforest the size of Latvia.

Image result for veganuary 2020

UK:

More than 100,000 people have already pledged to stick to a plant-based diet for Veganuary, double the number who took the plunge at the same time last year.

The organisation behind the campaign is expanding into Germany, the US and Chile and is airing its first TV commercial after Christmas. “On Sunday, we finished with about 102,000 sign-ups and that is massively more than at the same point last year, 15 December, when we had 44,000 sign-ups – that’s a 127% increase,” Veganuary’s Toni Vernelli said.

It hopes to reach 350,000 by 1 January, up from 250,000 at the start of this year. The campaign is having an impact on restaurants and supermarkets, she said: “The number of companies getting in touch with us who are launching products is truly mind blowing. It does just seem to be everywhere.”
