5 Deadly Diseases Linked to the Meat and Dairy Industries

Posted by Jason Bales | March 16, 2020

Freshly-slaughtered meat from wildlife and farm animals is preferred over meat that has been slaughtered before being shipped.

The meat and dairy industries, especially those that sell live animals directly to consumers, are breeding grounds for deadly diseases and illnesses. Cows, chickens, pigs, birds, and others are crammed into small buildings and cells, bringing together thousands of animals in very tight spaces. If one animal is sick, the rest of the population is immediately at risk.

Such disregard for these creatures’ health and wellbeing is both abusive to animals and dangerous to humans. From dirty air and water to the overuse of antibiotics, the meat and dairy industries are perpetuating the spread of bacterial infections, especially antibiotic-resistant strains, viruses, and other zoonotic diseases.

With the recent COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, the world is starting to realize the dangers of animal agriculture, and it’s about time. Fortunately, changing the way we treat animals can help avoid these pandemics in the future.

Here are 5 deadly diseases linked to the meat and dairy industries:

1. COVID-19 (2019 Novel Coronavirus)

While the jury is still out on which animal is ultimately responsible for COVID-19’s jump to humans, scientists and other experts are confident the virus originated in bats and spread to humans through a Chinese wet market.

At these wet markets, animals, both alive and dead, and people are put into close proximity, creating an ideal environment for viruses and other diseases to spread from host to host.

“Poorly-regulated, live-animal markets mixed with illegal wildlife trade,” the Wildlife Conservation Society said in a statement, “offer a unique opportunity for viruses to spillover from wildlife hosts into the human population.”

Fortunately, China and other Asian countries are starting to crack down on wildlife trading. Proposals to ban the dog and cat meat trade are being considered, China has outlawed eating wildlife, and Vietnam might permanently ban their wildlife meat trade. Hopefully, this pandemic shows the importance of animal welfare for both animals and humans.

2. H1N1 (Swine Flu)

Image result for swine flu

Before the recent COVID-19 outbreak, the last time the World Health Organization declared a pandemic was for the swine influenza. H1N1, which is the term given to the variant virus that eventually jumped from pigs to humans, was first discovered in April 2009. By April 2010, the CDC estimated that anywhere from 151,000 to 575,000 people died globally as a result of the H1N1 pandemic.

Swine flu likely originated due to frequent contact between farm workers and pigs combined with unsanitary factory-farming conditions and a lack of concern for animal welfare. Unfortunately, once the genie is let out of the bottle, there isn’t much we can do to put it back. To this day, H1N1 circulates as a seasonal flu virus.

3. H5N1 (Bird Flu)

Image result for bird flu

Also called avian influenza, bird flu can jump from chickens and other poultry livestock to humans. Though never as severe as swine flu, avian influenza A viruses H5, H7, and H9 have infected people, with the H5N1 and H7N9 strains being the most common.

Since 2013, at least 1,500 people fell victim to H7N9 and over 600 died as a result of their illnesses. While these statistics pale in comparison to both the COVID-19 and H1N1 pandemics, they do show how increased exposure to sick birds is a dangerous game to play. With over 9 billion chickens slaughtered every year in the United States alone, the opportunity for zoonotic spillover is concerning.

4. Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)

Image result for mrsa

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is not a virus like the novel coronavirus, swine flu, or bird flu. Rather, it’s a bacterial infection – a staph infection to be more specific. Staphylococcus aureus is a dangerous bacteria that can cause pneumonia, heart valve infections, and bone infections, though it is typically treated with methicillin. Unfortunately, likely due to a severe overuse of antibiotics, Staphylococcus aureus became resistant to methicillin, and MRSA was born.

How is all of this related to the meat and dairy industry? The FDA currently allows farmers to administer antibiotics to their livestock as a “disease prevention” tactic, leaving meat- and dairy-consuming humans to massively and unknowingly overuse these important drugs.

“To keep these miracle drugs working when sick people and animals need them,” Interim Director of Food and Agriculture at the Natural Resources Defense Council, Lena Brook, said, “[the] FDA must end the widespread practice of using these drugs for so-called ‘disease prevention’ and set clear targets for antibiotics reduction in [the meat and dairy industries].”

If we don’t drastically change our current food system, a U.N. report estimates that over 10 million people per year will die from drug-resistant infections by 2050. The easiest way to ensure you’re not ingesting unnecessary antibiotics is to adopt a plant-based diet.

5. Salmonella

Image result for salmonella

Salmonella is the most frequently reported foodborne bacterial infection in the United States. It’s typically transmitted from contaminated animal meat, eggs, or dairy and infects the intestinal tract. If it happens to move beyond the intestinal tract, salmonella is deadly, though most typically recover within 48 to 72 hours.

Unfortunately, like MRSA, salmonella is starting to develop immunities to certain antibiotics, which makes treating severe cases much more difficult for health professionals. As more animals are forced to live in closer proximity to others, factory farms ignore animal welfare standards, and environmental protections aren’t awarded to those that live near these facilities, salmonella outbreaks could increase in frequency.

We must start working toward a cruelty-free food system. Our lives, and the lives of billions of animals around the world, depend on it.

Dog Meat Free Indonesia – Celebrities Ricky Gervais and Peter Egan join campaigners in calls for Indonesia to close down its Live Animal Markets.

Celebrities Ricky Gervais and Peter Egan join campaigners in calls for Indonesia to close down its Live Animal Markets

18 March 2020

As the coronavirus COVID-19 continues to cause global chaos, sickness and fatalities, and Indonesia reports its first human infections, international and Indonesian celebrities join forces with campaigners from the Dog Meat Free Indonesia coalition to call on the Indonesian government to take action to close its cruel and filthy live animal markets to safeguard human and animal health and welfare.

18th March, Jakarta: Celebrities Ricky Gervais and Peter Egan have joined the Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI) coalition in their calls on President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to take action to close the country’s macabre live animal markets amidst the growing global health crisis.

Whilst the virus is now known to have originated from the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, China, where a huge variety of wildlife species were being sold alongside dogs and other domesticated animals destined for human consumption, campaigners warn that these types of gruesome markets are still rife in many parts of the region, including Indonesia.

2

The DMFI’s latest campaign supported by international and Indonesian celebrity ambassadors is committed to raising public and political awareness of the unsanitary conditions in these markets, that, together with the contamination risks of having so many animal species caged and killed alongside one another, present the perfect breeding ground for new and deadly diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that 70 per cent of global disease-causing pathogens discovered in the past 50 years came from animals, and COVID-19 is no different.

In the video released by the DMFI coalition today, actor and comedian Ricky Gervais warns, “It’s not the first time a terrible disease has started because of people eating things they shouldn’t. I mean this one comes from eating pangolins. Pangolins! Stop eating everything that moves! It’s going to kill us all!.”

Campaigners warned President Jokowi in an open letter in January of the grave dangers of the country’s live animal markets and unregulated trade in wildlife, and called for “preventative and proactive measures to make sure Indonesia is not the next point of origin of a deadly virus.” The authorities in Indonesia are finally starting to feel the pressure after announcing the country’s first cases of the deadly disease on the 2nd March, with the numbers of infections on the archipelago steadily rising in the world’s fourth most populous country, and with the French Prime Minister calling it the “biggest health crisis in a century”.

30

Other countries affected by the deadly outbreak have already started to adopt landmark measures to tackle the source of the virus. Following a temporary ban in January, on the 24th February, China approved a landmark proposal which prohibits “the illegal wildlife trade, abolishes the bad habit of overconsumption of wildlife, and effectively protects the lives and health of the people”; and on the 26th February, China’s fifth largest city, Shenzhen, proposed legislation with the additional measure of a city-wide ban on the consumption of dogs and cats, to reflect the special relationship between people and domesticated companion animals, which it has called the “consensus of all human civilisation”. On the 9th March, the Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc of Vietnam ordered the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to submit a directive for a ban on wildlife trade and consumption by the 1st of April. The DMFI campaigners hope that Indonesia will follow their example.

“The coronavirus outbreak has not only exposed the huge public health risks associated with live animal markets, it has also shone the global spotlight on the horrors of these animal markets and trades. Finally, governments are realising that they cannot keep these cruel and unregulated trades and practices alive and also keep their citizens safe, and we urge Indonesia to take similar urgent actions. Populations of protected species of wildlife are being decimated, companion animals are being stolen, and every month, tens of thousands of animals are illegally transported into, and slaughtered in, densely populated cities to supply the demand for dog, cat and “exotic” meat,” explains Lola Webber, co-founder of Change For Animals Foundation and co-ordinator for the Dog Meat Free Indonesia coalition.

Russia: a new animal protection law – 5 important facts

On December 27, 2018, the text for a new animal protection law was passed in Russia. In 2010 the lower house of the Russian parliament received the draft law for the first time.

russian-flag-jpg

The Animal Welfare Act has been fully applicable since January 2020. This Animal Welfare Act forms the basis for implementing further improvements in the protection of animals in Russia.
For the welfare of animals, the Animal Welfare Act sets limits and guidelines for the coexistence of humans and animals.

Animals with owners, homeless animals and animals in captivity are affected by the law.
As a result, every individual, animal shelter and facilities such as zoos or circuses are obliged to adhere to certain standards when dealing with animals.

These 5 points from Russia’s Animal Welfare Act should be known:

1. Animals as living beings that experience emotions and suffering
The law names animals as living beings that experience emotions and suffering and turns away from the definition of “animals as possessions”.
Legal recognition is an important success for animals and forms a legal basis to fundamentally question the common way people deal with animals.

kleines Mädchen mit Hund

2. Castration programs and catch-and-release procedures for dealing with homeless animals.
When dealing with homeless animals – for example if they are to be caught – they should always work together with an animal shelter and the animals should be housed there.
If a human companion can be identified for the animal, it is brought back there. Simply abandoning an animal rather than moving it to a new owner or shelter is prohibited.

streune in Frankreich

Once at the shelter, homeless animals are to be vaccinated and sterilized or castrated. The use of pain relievers is also legally required for such interventions.
They also get a brand that cannot be removed. After veterinary care, the animals return to their usual environment, i.e. to the place where they were found.
The capturing and resetting of the animals should be filmed and open to the public.

Homeless animals should remain in the shelter until the previous human companions are found, a new home is found, or the animals succumb to their age.

csm_Streuner_1_6913ce0bb1

Killing homeless animals is prohibited.
If euthanasia is necessary, this may only be carried out by appropriate specialist staff.

3. Cruelty to animals
The law formulates an extensive definition of cruelty to animals, which includes torture through physical violence, hunger or thirst.
To better protect animals, the law also prohibits:

-Abuse animals as bait for another animal
-To promote any form of cruelty to animals
-To let animals fight against each other on purpose

This gives competent authorities an important basis for consistently preventing and punishing cruelty to animals.

elefant auf den Boden in ZirkusMore needs to be done for animals in the entertainment industry, since the license introduced for zoos, circuses, aquariums or similar establishments merely sets guidelines for the exploitation of animals instead of abolishing them.

baer-mensch-zirkusbaer-100~_

Animals continue to be forced to behave unnaturally in these facilities for questionable cultural or entertainment purposes. Animals are not there to entertain people, which is why PETA Germany works every day to ensure that animals are not misused and tortured to entertain people.

4. Wild animals as animal roommates
The Animal Welfare Act prohibits the acquisition and keeping of wild animals as roommates in Russia. Wild animals are no longer allowed to be kept in private apartments, houses, gardens or in bars and restaurants.
Unfortunately, this regulation only applies to the purchase of animals after the Animal Welfare Act comes into force. Wild animals that already live with humans are not affected by the law.
They will probably not be able to live in a species-appropriate way.

Igel-1jpg

5. Dealing with offenders
Cruelty to animals must always be taken seriously and punished. If people torture animals by inflicting them psychological or physical injuries, or even killing them, these actions must have corresponding legal consequences.
The Animal Welfare Act provides for various penalties for these cases. For example, a fine of up to 80,000 rubles (about EUR 1086.00) or up to six months in the amount of the monthly salary of the offender. If minors are present during the crime, a fine of up to 300,000 rubles (around EUR 4072.50) or up to five years in prison can be imposed.

Animal welfare laws have the potential to bring about significant changes in how humans treat animals.
The more specifically the legal texts name criminal behavior, the less excuses there are for criminals.

Although the Russian law now recognizes animals as living beings that experience emotions and suffering, there is no consistent implementation.
Facilities such as aquariums, dolphinariums, circuses and zoos that imprison animals for entertainment purposes may continue to do so.

delphinarium russland pg

The condition is a valid license. It is now up to the responsible authorities and institutions to enforce the guidelines of the new law in an animal-friendly and consistent manner so that the text of the law not only reads well, but also means noticeable changes for the animals.

https://www.peta.de/Tierschutzgesetz-Russland

My comment: If we take into account that Russia is not an EU country, we have to praise the legislator.
But that’s only one dimension of the law.
The other is its practical application.

The German animal protection law is also very good on paper.
For example, the first section says:
§ 1 “Nobody may cause pain, suffering or harm to an animal without a reasonable reason.”
This also means “useful” animals.

But every day we experience conditions in factory farming as if we had no animal protection law.
An animal protection law is as good as its consistent application in practice.

We hope for Russia.
That the police, authorities, veterinarians and, last but not least, the court remain consistent and true to their progressive animal welfare laws.

19/3/20: Now Thailand – ILLEGAL ‘wet animal markets’ where it’s believed the Coronavirus originated are still operating under organised crime gangs.

Thai

60 Minutes exposed the continuing animal trade in Thailand's Chatuchak wildlife market in Bangkok

Wild animals smuggled from across the world sat in cages for their live or slaughtered sale

Thailand – Bangkok – Illegal wet markets are still selling live animals, despite the Coronavirus infections across the world.

ILLEGAL ‘wet animal markets’ where it’s believed the Coronavirus originated are still operating under organised crime gangs.

The shocking discovery was revealed in an undercover investigation by 60 Minutes Australia journalist Liam Bartlett.

‘TIME BOMB’

Coronavirus: Illegal ‘wet markets’ are STILL selling live animals in Bangkok despite ban over fears of new epidemics

Confronting footage shows cage after cage of wild “high risk” animals being stored for their slaughter and sale in wet markets, despite Asian governments claiming they had been shut down following the COVID-19 outbreak.

Travelling to Thailand, Bartlett was joined by leading environmental and human rights investigator Steven Galster, at who warned the wet market has the potential to spark a “second Wuhan.”

A strict ban on the consumption and farming of wild animals was rolled out across China in a desperate effort to contain the coronavirus, which is believed to have started at a wildlife market in Wuhan.

African serval cats, fennec foxes from the Sahara and marmosets from South America were discovered in the market

Although it is unclear which animal transferred the virus to humans, China acknowledged it needed to bring its lucrative wildlife industry under control to prevent another outbreak.

China closed over 20,000 wet markets in February, but markets being run by crime syndicates are still selling off animals across Asia with impunity.

The hotbeds for disease are still operating in Thailand, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia and Burma, where millions of dollars are being made in the shipping and trading of “exotic meat” and wildlife.

At the Chatuchak market in the heart of Bangkok, wild animals smuggled from across the world sat in cages for their live or slaughtered sale.

Covert footage showed African serval cats, fennec foxes from the Sahara, marmosets from South America, blue-tongued lizards, iguanas, monkeys, Australian cockatoos, African meerkats, ferrets, rare tortoises, porcupines, snakes and skunks, among others.

The animals sold in wet markets are highly vulnerable to catching and passing on viruses, due to their diminished immune systems caused by the stress of living in the squalid conditions.

This adds to the risk of viruses such as COVID-19 crossing over to humans during the animals’ handling process and slaughter.

While experts aren’t yet certain, there is suspicion is that coronavirus crossed over to humans late last year from the pangolin, the most trafficked wild animal in the world popular in the unhygienic street sales.

The wet markets are visited by thousands of people each day, making the risk of the virus jumping to humans even higher.

Mr Galster told the Australian media outlet Asia’s wet markets are a “sleeping time bomb” of coronavirus risk.

Alaska: Another blow to the Iditarod Mafia

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — One of the Iditarod’s top sponsors is dropping financial support, the second major sponsor with Alaska ties to sever relationships with the sled dog race this month.

american-flag-120402148

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles confirmed Monday that the Anchorage Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership will no longer sponsor the race. The dealership for 30 years has been one of the race’s principal partners and annually presents the race winner with a new pickup at the finish line in Nome.

_Fiat_Chrysler_Automobiles

A statement from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, or FCA, noted the parent company did not sponsor the Iditarod.

“Anchorage Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Center – an independently owned and operated dealership – had been a sponsor of the race. We understand and can confirm the dealership will no longer continue sponsoring the race. As such, FCA and the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram logos will no longer be associated with the race,” the statement said.

Iditarod+Dogs+Stray+NC+AS

Chuck Talksy, a spokesman for the Anchorage dealership, initially said they planned to sponsor the race again next year, finances permitting.

Later, when informed of Chrysler’s statement, he said, “That’s kind of news to us. As a franchisee, we are subject to various controls.”

An email to Iditarod officials seeking comment was not immediately returned.

The announcement came as mushers are making the final push for Nome in this year’s race. The nearly 1,000-mile (1,609-kilometer) race started March 8 in Willow with 57 mushers. Six have withdrawn.

Thomas Waerner of Norway was leading the race, the first musher to reach the checkpoint in Koyuk, about 150 miles from the finish line.

Alaska Airlines, the Seattle-based airline that got its start decades ago in Alaska, earlier this month announced it was dropping its sponsorship of the race, which has been targeted by an animal rights group.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was first to announce the departure of both Alaska Airlines and Chrysler as race sponsors.

The group says the nearly 1,000-mile race across Alaska is cruel for the dogs.

It also claims more than 150 dogs have died since the race started in 1973. Iditarod officials dispute that number but have not provided their own count of dogs who died on the trail despite numerous requests by The Associated Press.

A team heads out at the ceremonial start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race to begin their near 1,000-mile (1,600-km) journey through Alaska’s frigid wilderness in downtown Anchorage

PETA is the race’s biggest critic and has for years targeted sponsors. In Chrysler’s case, that includes more than a quarter million emails from PETA supporters, television ads in the Detroit area and protesters dragging a sled filled with fake dead dogs around downtown Detroit, the organization said in a statement.

“After feeling some real pressure from PETA, Chrysler put the brakes on its connection with the Iditarod and is sending the message that dogs deserve better than being run to death for mushers’ prize money,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a statement. “Alaska Airlines has also withdrawn its sponsorship of this wretched race in which over 150 dogs have died, and we hope this year is the last year dogs will suffer in this way.”

sled-dogs-iditarod-4

Alaska Airlines denied PETA had anything to do with its decision to drop sponsorship of the race after more than 40 years and instead said it was a change in the company’s corporate giving strategy.

And I mean…THANK YOU! Another step that brings the end of the animal cruelty event closer.

The Iditarod is worse than a nightmare for dogs!

The animals run about 160 kilometers a day and are only allowed to rest for almost 40 hours over a period of two weeks. The race takes place in the deepest winter and brings the dogs to the limit. Many are injured, fall into ice water, break down or get sick. Their paws get sore from the many races and often their muscles give up at some point.

The dogs have no legal protection in Alaska. People can go out into the woods and shoot their dog for whatever reason. Sometimes that might be injury, sometimes it’s because they’re too old to race. The mushers make remarks like, ‘”this guy isn’t running so well, we’re gonna get rid of him”,  as if he’s a piece of furniture or a machine.

And these people are lauded in the public eye.

In the racing industry of animals, killing is common; once they get sick, weak, old, or injured, they are eliminated without crying an eye for them
And when the dogs are not running, they are usually kept in small cages.

We can only hope that this mortal torture will soon come to an end.
The Alaska Neanderthals, the mushers, should do the route themselves, which helps to stay fit and healthy.

My best regards to all, Venus

Officials In China Move to Stop the Cat and Dog Meat Trade. Add Your Name To the Petition to Support This.

China

Officials in Shenzen, China have finally moved to end the deadly cat and dog meat trade amid fears of devastating illnesses like coronavirus.

Add your voice to help save cats and dogs by urging officials to pass the proposed ban immediately.

This bill would protect wild animals, too, by outlawing consumption and sale of turtles, frogs, snakes, pangolins, and more.

These poor creatures await their deaths in small, cramped cages. Dogs and cats may be beaten, sliced and even burned alive.

This must end, and the ban in Shenzen could create a ripple effect throughout China and the rest of the world, and finally stop the cruelty.

Sign the petition to join Lady Freethinker in supporting this ban and calling to protect animals from suffering, and shield humans from future pandemics

PETITION TARGET: Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Cui Tiankai

Officials in Shenzhen, China recently moved to ban the horrifying dog and cat meat trade amid growing concerns that eating infected meat can transmit coronavirus and other diseases. Add your voice to show your support for this proposal, and urge officials to stop all dog and cat slaughter as soon as possible.

If enacted, the law, which coincides with a larger national movement to permanently end China’s wild animal trade, would ban consumption of all animals not on a “white list.” In addition to dogs and cats, the legislation would outlaw eating snakes, turtles and frogs, which are popular in southern China.

Now a global health emergency, coronavirus has killed over 2,700 people. The only way to prevent future outbreaks is to abolish the dangerous and largely unregulated wild animal trade, according to conservationists.

It is imperative for local administrations to step up and implement their own legislation moving to abolish the cruel dog and cat meat trade. Animals’ lives and our health depend on it.

Sign this petition urging Cui Tiankai, the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., to support the proposed dog and cat meat ban in Shenzhen, as well as other city and provincial governments attempting to adopt similar policies.
