EU: A Little EU Experience On A Few Of Our Issues Of Concern.

zerissene EU-Flagge am Stock

The UK voted 2 years ago to get out of the EU and take back control of its own future.

With the possibility of a deal now on the table (13/11/18) I though it may be a good time to look a little more at ‘EU departments’ and to question if the EU citizen is really getting a good deal for what (their) nation contributes to the EU.

Here is a formal list of the biggest to smallest contributors to the EU:

https://www.statista.com/statistics/316691/european-union-eu-budget-share-of-contributions/

UK – 13.5% – compared to Germany 19% and France 16.6%.  The 3 biggest contributors.

Move down to the other end and we see Luxembourg 0.25%, Bulgaria 0.34% and Romania 1.15%.  All percentages can be seen on the above link.

So, what do we get for this ?

We (as an organisation) have over 27 years worth of experience in live animals being transported around the EU and via our sister organisation ‘Serbian Animals Voice’  https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/  around 14 years of experience dealing with stray animal welfare in Serbia – not currently an EU member state, but a ‘Candidate Country’ to join.

With our experience we have written and produced a large amount of letters and questions to the EU over the years; especially (for live transport) the Health and Food Safety Commission (DG SANTE)  and for Serbia animal welfare, the EU Enlargement Commission to express our concerns before the EU door is opened up to Serbia.

DG has bothered to contact us at the odd interval; but the Enlargement Commission has never really bothered despite all our evidence abut non compliance with the EU’s very own ‘Rule of Law’ (Copenhagen agreement).

So, anyway, here is a formal listing of the EU Departments and Executive Agencies which ‘control’ the day to day operations at EU HQ.

Link – https://ec.europa.eu/info/departments_en   – this is from ‘Europa’; the formal site of the EU.

We see they list no less than 53 agencies and departments.  So lets go a little deeper regarding live animal transport and Serbia.  Live animals transport comes under ‘Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) – and here is the link to their site from the above listing:

https://ec.europa.eu/info/departments/health-and-food-safety_en

From the link you can see the leadership and organisation; but then go a little deeper.  Below Martin Seychell you can download the organisation chart of just this Commission  – here is the link:  https://ec.europa.eu/info/sites/info/files/organisation_charts/organisation-chart-dg-sante_en.pdf

7 main departments (A to G); each with a head; and then each department being sub divided into different organisations – approximately 34 at our count; each having ?? number of employees.  On its own site, the FVO  http://ec.europa.eu/food/fvo/how_en.print.htm ; part of the Health and Consumers Directorate-General; says that it has at least 170 employees.  The FVO and the DG SANTE are really responsible for undertaking EU legislation compliance with EU regulations in all member states.  They do not and it does not work.

Moving on to Serbia and its application to join the EU; this is undertaken via the  European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations which are headed by Commissioner Hahn – Link:  https://ec.europa.eu/info/departments/european-neighbourhood-policy-and-enlargement-negotiations_en

Here is a link to all the major persons (but not all staff) associated with this Commission – https://ec.europa.eu/info/departments/european-neighbourhood-policy-and-enlargement-negotiations_en#leadership

And here is an organisational chart of the structure:  https://ec.europa.eu/neighbourhood-enlargement/sites/near/files/near-org-chart.pdf

42 departments or more; each with staff and people working for them.

So by giving a little insight into just 2 of the 53 EU Departments and Executive Agencies that combine to produce the mighty EU machine; one would think that this; which does not even start to include MEP’s  – http://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20130610IPR11414/elections-2014-share-out-of-meps-seats-among-28-eu-countries   – one would think that issues such as live animal transport and stray animal management could be undertaken by such a huge amount of staff.

Experience in both theatres of live transport and Serbian animal welfare show us there is NO REAL CONCERN at EU level.  Surely, paying all this money to the EU as taxpayers (UK – Mark) and (Germany – Venus); are we not right to ask exactly what the 2 sections of 53 are doing for issues that concern us ?

No; the EU does not want to know; instead it works to punish the UK for voting to leave the club and taking back control.  Other member states all seem happy to continue contributing finances as shown above; for getting what exactly in return ?

The EU system does not work.  It employs thousands and has a great website, but the reality is it does very little; if anything; to address the concerns of EU citizens over such important issues as live animal transport enforcement.

Still want to be an EU member state ?  the facts are above – you decide if it is financially worth it for very little return.

Regards Mark.

Portugal: Vet is Turning Broken Washing Machines into Cozy Homes for Stray Cats; and Easier Sterilisation Also !

This Vet is Turning Broken Washing Machines into Cozy Homes for Stray Cats

This Vet is Turning Broken Washing Machines into Cozy Homes for Stray Cats

A compassionate veterinarian from Monchique in Portugal has found a novel way to turn trash into treasure, repurposing old washing machines as shelters for stray cats throughout the town.

Ann Silva came up with the idea when she was caring for two little kittens in her vet practice. The adventurous pair curled up inside a broken washing machine destined for collection in the backyard and made themselves right at home.

“I put in some blankets, and they’ve never left,” said Silva.

Silva regularly sterilizes stray cats and returns them to their colonies, but often worries about them not having shelter to rest and recover. She decided that this was the perfect solution.

After getting permission from the local council, Silva began depositing unwanted, broken washing machines around the town. The machines are decorated with art created by local students and graffiti artists to transform them into funky street art. By involving local children from the local community, Silva hopes to teach them that cats are not harmful and instill the values of compassion and empathy for the future.

There are five of these stylish cat “houses” dotted around town now — spread out through residential areas and one at a local school — but Silva is hoping to grow the initiative further and is accepting donations of old washing machines and dryers.

“The project has only just started so we are welcoming donations and soon hope to place more shelters for our cats.”

The machines make fantastic shelters for the stray cats, keeping them warm in winter and cool in the hot summer months.

The veterinarian also says it’s much easier to keep tabs on and care for the stray cat populations in the area; she was able to sterilize an impressive 50 cats in only one week this month.

Parvo has already taken two of our babies!!!

ROSIE AND FOUR PUPPIES ARE FIGHTING FOR THEIR LIVES!

Please, help them survive!

Today our hearts are breaking as five of our precious tiny little lives are on the line. Our dear Ruma kill shelter rescue, Rosie and puppies found thrown away in a paper bag are infected with parvo. Rosie has developed a new, strong variant form of the virus, despite being vaccinated and revaccinated!

Two of the babies stood no chance against the vicious virus form, but FOUR ARE STILL FIGHTING FOR THEIR LIVES!!!

Four tiny sweet, gentle, loving little souls, perfect little babies, with so much to live for, such a will to fight, to survive despite the loss of their beautiful siblings. And Rosie, a kill shelter survivor!

They are so afraid of what they are going through. Their cries torture our minds every day they  suffer. They need continued hyper immune serums, every single day. Without these, they absolutely will die. It’s the only thing keeping them alive right now. They needs Vit C shots, they need IV fluids into their frail systems, they need diapers for the constant faecal stream out of their twisted, pained, tortured little bodies and also antibiotics. This cocktail of drugs really is the only way to ensure they live.

We are providing them the very best care, but  the truth is we are drowning in debts. We are unable to pay for any of these expensive treatments and the risk we are taking is not having a vet for the rest of 90 dogs we have under our care. But how could we ever not give them this chance?

When animals are treated like garbage …

österreichische Flagge

The association http://www.RespekTiere.at (from Austria) had a mission in Bulgaria.
The goal was the castration of strays that live in Bulgaria, as well as in other Eastern countries, under catastrophic conditions.
Thomas Putzgruber, the club’s chairman, tells us a story.

Tom Wildgruber jpg

“Today we would like to tell you a small but representative story of the normal madness in the Balkan country!
We had found a puppy somewhere in Breznik; the poor one ran alone and apparently disoriented through the streets, unnoticed by the people around.
Too often, such a scene is repeated, the sight is too commonplace, so that no one would only pay attention to such a fate. The puppy could not be caught easily, no, it showed life spirits, and only by a trick finally managed to hold the puppy and bring it into the transport box in the car.

bulgarische welpe

As we started to leave, a man, wrapped in filthy clothes and supported by crutches, came toward us; He indicated that he also had dogs in the garden, which we should also take with him. So we followed him; We saw a house ruin, a concrete concrete building and decaying wood, badly damaged by the elements, and a littered garden strewn with garbage. In one corner of the evil chaos, old bread was laid, infested with mold – apparently the dining place for the dogs. They probably never had anything else.

In the middle of the Inferno – a white puppy in the most terrible condition! His body a skeleton, every single bone was distinguished by the taut, parchmental skin. His steely blue eyes seemed to ask for help, but his gestures did not want to reveal any weakness. What a stubborn courage the little guy possessed! Snarling, gritting his teeth, he scurried away for the moment, pursued by me through a dark corridor covered with broken glass and plastic garbage behind the house;

Attention was required, the sweetness was obviously sick, yet he growled from the bottom of his throat – you should never be bitten in action, in this case, especially not! Rabies is still a topic in Bulgaria, other diseases anyway.
But in the end we were able to hold him by the back of his neck; the puppy now used the last strength, wanted to free himself necessarily; why? we wondered, why did not he just give himself up – it could not be any worse for him anyway, no matter what or where.

Perhaps he just wanted his peace, dying in the hope of letting his soul glide over the bridge somewhere; …

Now the son of the man had come; a boy 10, 12 years old, in the morning away from school, with a cigarette in his hand. He noticed dry, a second puppy would be in the garden, we should also look for that.
But what we found before was a dead pup lying in the grass; disposed of like rubbish, left lying exactly where he had done his last breaths. Ignorance, no one cried for him. A fate among hundreds of thousands …

tote bulgarische welpe

Then we discovered the wanted; he, too, tried to hide in panic-stricken eyes, to dig into the grass, to disappear behind the bushes, to become invisible in the garbage. However, when he found himself discovered, he also showed his bare teeth, brave as a proud warrior, despite the bottomless inferiority no sign of abandonment. Once more the poor man escaped, but now he was stuck in the proverbial clamp – a rusted iron plate restricted his escape route and therefore he had to approach us directly. For this, however, he already lacked the strength. As thin as his sibling, with a severely injured forepaw;

Tierärtzte in Bulgarien

Had we not been there by chance, the three would have died as they had lived; Left completely alone, the mother probably killed, left behind in a world she does not love. Her life would be extinguished like the snow on the southern slopes at the beginning of spring. Nobody would have noticed their fate, too often the same tragedy happens every day.

It is up to us what we learn from such stories; but it is certain that only castration projects prevent such animal suffering. Only castrations can change the course of events, perhaps eventually overcome the misery.

Dealing with stray animals is a shame of humanity, perhaps the greatest of all.

Let us all help to make up for at least a fraction of what we have done to them!
In this sense: please do not buy dogs from the breeder, at least as long as not, as such tragedies almost directly on our doorstep play. Every adopted dog is a rescued life, every one bred takes his place away from one who would need nothing more than a home. Please think about it!

Tiny puppy found taking final breaths saved

This little girl was about to die. She lay unconscious with the labored breathing that usually comes just before death. Our rescue team rushed her to Animal Aid where we discovered she was in shock with severe dehydration, probably caused by untreated diarrhea. We immediately started her on IV fluids but she remained almost comatose and slept through the night. We weren’t sure we could save her, and wondered what the following day might bring. And wow, were we in for a surprise. Meet Lilly after just 24 hours.

Saving a Mama dog who risked her life for her puppies

We’ve all heard stories about mothers risking their lives for their babies–but now we’ve seen it with our own eyes. Angelina is one of the gentlest, sweetest dogs we’ve ever met. But don’t try messin’ with her little pod of baby angels because she’s done everything in her power to protect them. She became dangerously injured in the process-a wound that tore mammary tissue from her belly and a huge laceration on her neck. That’s what it took to make sure each and every one of her babies was safe. Angelina will be spayed when her young’uns are weaned. In the meantime, she’s going to be one busy lady. Meet our beautiful hero today.

Dog saved after eye comes out of socket

Street dog having violent seizure rescued

We got a call that a street dog was flailing in the road having a violent seizure. Luckily our ambulance was only moments away and when we arrived, she was still having the seizure. The seizure was probably caused by a trauma-maybe a car accident. We stabilized her with anti-seizure and other medicines, and so began her six week recovery of her ability to balance and walk. Meet beautiful Stella …

Somewhere, in a dark cell of an animal home in your city, or abandoned on a street and lonely, an animal is waiting for you.
He just needs a little care, food and walking with you, he does not need much, he just needs a home.

World Animal Net (WAN) is a site which we use quite regularly – as it provides links to animal welfare associations based in just about every country of the globe.  We have found it very useful.

Here is the main link –  http://worldanimal.net/directory/search-wan-directory

As you can see; you can do a search in a couple of ways – we suggest that going directly to a country is the best way.  You can literally just select the country you wish to gets results for from the drop down, and then press the ‘search’ box.  You should then be given all the organisations for welfare groups in that country.

Just for example; today we have had several visits from Greece; so what better than to use this as an example.

So we simply go to the main link

http://worldanimal.net/directory/search-wan-directory

Select ‘Greece’ from the drop down list of nations.

Then hit the ‘Search’ button.

Then we are given a full listing of all the Greek organisations which can help with animal welfare.  The link to this is given here:

http://worldanimal.net/directory/search-wan-directory/results?country=84&fanda=0

So a good and very useful tool no matter where you are located in the world; if you need animal help.  You may find you get a lot more results than you expected – Great !

Have a play around with it and make sure you keep WAN as a source in your directory / contacts list.
