An oil production ship capable of carrying up to 2 million barrels of oil has exploded off the coast of Nigeria.

According to local reports, the Trinity Spirit exploded on Thursday morning at the Ukpokiti oil field off Nigeria’s coast near the Escravos terminal close to the River Niger delta.

Dramatic video shows the ship on fire with thick black smoke rising into the sky as it appears to be sinking.

The vessel is an FPSO, a floating production storage and offloading unit, which is reportedly owned by Shebah Exploration & Production Company Ltd (SEPCOL).

These types of ships are used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing and storage of oil and serve a similar function to larger oil rigs.

The ship had ten crew members on board, chief executive Ikemefuna Okafor said on Thursday, according to Reuters.

It is not believed the crew members have yet been accounted for.

Mr Okafor said investigations were underway to establish the cause of the explosion while attempts to contain the situation were being made with help from local communities and Chevron, which has a facility nearby.

“At this time there are no reported fatalities, but we can confirm that there were ten crew men on board the vessel prior to the incident and we are prioritising investigations with respect to their safety and security,” he said.

While it is not yet clear how much oil will be spilled by the Trinity Spirit, commentators have warned Nigeria could be facing its second environmental disaster in three months, after a huge oil spill from a disused, capped well head released 20,000 barrels of oil a day for a month into the waterways of Nembe, in Nigeria’s Bayelsa state.

The impact of that spill was described as being “like Hiroshima”, by the Nigerian government, with the leaking oil causing the death of marine life and damage to mangroves and waterways.

29/1: A Message From Venus and Mark To All Our Site Visitors.

Venus and Mark; the co founders of WAV, would like to thank some of you for the comments you leave in the way of replies on the site.  We read them all and they are all to be viewed under ‘Recent Comments’ on the left hand side on the site.  We are both of the same feeling on most animal issues; we provide input individually but consult when necessary, and the following has been released with approval from us both.

WAV is an information site run by us, animal advocates.

We run this animal rights blog independently, do not act as representatives any organization or political party (from any country) and we finance our work ourselves – independently; free  from outside sources.  Where possible on our posts, we always publish the original source of our data, as well as providing links directly to animal advocate organisations if we feel it will be beneficial for further progress.

Many WAV visitors often make contact, asking how they can support us.  We do not ask for your money or your financial membership; we have no membership – instead we ask that you invest your donations (if you are able) directly to the animal organisations that we give information on; but just as important, if not more important, is something that everyone can do as supporters, and that is:

Sign the petitions,

Share the videos of the atrocities we provide; films in the slaughterhouse, animal farms, labs, bear bile farms, dairy systems, fur farms, trophy hunting to name but a few; in addition to everyone giving up the support of these businesses which are directly associated with meat, dairy and the use of any animal products.  Plant based is the way forward and we promote that.

These are the minimums that we owe the animals, and with your support, can make such a difference, whilst at the same time have a very positive effect by delivering a severe blow to those who exploit and torture animals.

Thank you for your interests in supporting WAV either financially or in other ways; but rest assured, it is not necessary.  If you can do the above, it is more than we ask in the way of full support.

It is the positive changes that drive us, and we are witnessing this each and every day from the feedback we get from all corners of the world.  Visitor Traffic for Worldanimalsvoice.com (clustrmaps.com) – this is the only inspiration we need to be a world animals voice.

Our best regards and thanks to you all for your actions and support;

Venus and Mark.

India: Some Of The Latest Amazing Rescues By The Top Team At ‘Animal Aid Unlimited’ – January 2022.

Dear Mark,

Rajasthani nights are very cold–it doesn’t snow, but with night temperatures down to 5°C(40°F) the slightest breeze bringsa deep chill. We’re so grateful to all of you whose help enables us to bundle the animals up with jackets and blankets, provide hot water bottles and run space heaters throughout the night to all puppies, cats and frail animals.

Your kindness warms their hearts year round.

Bouncy was hit by a car, but she wasn’t about to give in!

Too much playing to do!

This little angel was curled up and trembling when her neighbours called to report the accident.

She’d been hit in the face by a passing vehicle and her mouth was bleeding. We feared the worst–a complicated jaw fracture or a head injury–but our fears were calmed when we examined her. We found no signs of fracture andher bright button eyes and perky ears assured us that she had not suffered an injury to her brain. She needed rest, however she wasn’t much interested in it–she was too busy playing. She bounced back within days, and inspired us to call her Bouncy! What a pleasure to see her thriving.

Penny lost half her vision, but kept 100% of her love for life!

As we approached this dog from behind, she looked perfectly fine.

But as we neared we understood why she was keeping completely still. Her eye had ruptured from the blow of a passing vehicleand the pain must have been unbearable. She was traumatized and seemed too scared to move a muscle.

Once back in our hospital our medical team found thather eye was damaged and would need to be surgically removed. When she recovered from surgery and her pain was gone, the light of her love shimmered from her entire face.

Meet Penny, a magnificent and oh so sweet accident survivor. Please donate today!

Welcome to the world, little Peanut!

Peanut is a teenie tiny orphan who, in her 3 weeks of life, has already fought through several bouts of illness–a common problem with orphan babies. In addition to keeping their babies clean, warm, safe and loved, mothers provide them with colostrum, a nutrient rich fluid produced by all mammals immediately after giving birth that helps build the immunity of the newborn.

We’re surrounding Peanut with love and doing all we can to help her grow, one day at a time.

‘World’s First’ Vegan Violin Crafted By Musician Using Wild Berries And Spring Water.

The violin sidesteps traditional materials and contains plant-based products instead. Credit: Vegan Violins / PBN

Traditional violin making can include products derived from the skin and bones of animals

For the first time ever, a violin has received certification from The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark. The creator of the musical instrument – traditionally crafted with animal products – maintains that the item is more ethical and acoustically speaking, an improvement.

Irish musician Padraig O’Dubhlaoidh is behind the creation, which took years of research to complete. The violin maker’s instruments have been played at high-profile venues, including Buckingham Palace, the White House, Carnegie Hall, and the Royal Albert Hall.

Violin makers have historically used non-vegan materials in their designs, such as animal hide glue, derived from the skin, bones, and tendons of animals. It is typically sourced from horses but rabbits, fish, and other species can be used too.

Further, violin strings and bows can contain ivory, horse tail hair, and animal intestines, among other animal-derived products.

But O’Dubhlaoidh is insistent that animal body parts are not needed to create the instrument. The musician stayed true to the traditional tools and methods used in violin production, but with some modern twists of his own.

For instance, to develop the purfling decoration that wraps around the instrument’s edges, he used wild berries and spring water sourced from beneath the granite of the Malvern Hills in the UK, where O’Dubhlaoidh lives.

Although animal-free strings and bows do exist, they are not currently registered with the Vegan Trademark.

For ‘ethical musicians’

O’Dubhlaoidh explained the process in a statement sent to PBN.

“I learned a lot about my craft during years of research and ultimately, it was the science of conservation that brought about a series of breakthroughs leading to success. During my experiments, I also discovered that there are unforeseen advantages to a vegan violin.

“Apart from the benefit to animals, society, and our environment, it has become very clear that animal-based glues have harmful effects on violins, inducing powerful tensions on wooden components. The adhesive used in my vegan violins however, has no such effect. Irrespective of ethics, this is an acoustic improvement.

“With our planet facing crises on almost every front, the collective voice of people wanting a fairer future grows stronger every day. Ethical musicians are part of this movement and have long wished for a violin that is fully vegan yet retains all the qualities of the classic instrument.”

The Vegan Society’s marketing manager, Ericka Durgahee, applauded the launch.

“It’s incredibly exciting to have the world’s first vegan violin registered with the Vegan Trademark. This will be music to the ears of so many violinists who have longed for a high-quality instrument that is free from animal products,” they said in a statement.

“Every violin is also completely bespoke with the sound and feel tailored to the player’s individual style and preference. Padraig has done a fantastic job and we’re extremely proud of what he has produced.”

‘Free Tibet’ (London) – A Time To Consider Human Rights Against Oppression.

We are an animal rights / welfare site.  But sometimes, when it is necessary, we also feel that it is right to give oppressed humans a voice.  I have been a member of ‘Free Tibet’ (London) for many years; and it is time the people of Tibet were given a voice – for you to see their suffering under Chinese rule.

The video and the graphics will explain a lot and hopefully provide answers to your questions.

“Tibet today is one of the most repressed and closed societies in the world.”

– United States Senator Robert Menendez

In 1950, China invaded the independent nation of Tibet and claimed it as its own. Ever since, it has kept Tibet under a brutal military occupation and claimed that Tibet is, and always was, part of China

Inside Tibet and across the world, Tibetans have never stopped believing Tibet is a nation.

SONY DSC

It has now been over 70 years since the occupation began, yet Tibetans still resist China’s rule and defy its oppression. They have never given up hope that one day they will be free.

What is life like in Tibet? Watch this video to learn more… Click ‘Watch om YouTube’

Tibet has been independently rated as the joint-worst place on Earth for political freedom and civil rights (tied with Syria). Despite this, Tibet does not get the international attention it deserves, and many are unaware of the atrocities committed in Tibet every day.

Eurogroup For Animals and the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition call for EU and Canada to Address Horse Welfare Under CETA.

12 January 2022

Press Release

The EU imports horse meat from Canada and this trade is problematic as NGO investigations and EU audits revealed massive problems with animal welfare and food safety. Eurogroup For Animals and the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition recommend using the tools offered by the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) to address and improve horse welfare in Canada.

The EU is the biggest consumer of horse meat, even if consumption – and imports – have decreased over the past decade for various reasons, including the 2014 food scandal, and the subsequent ban on Mexican horse meat. Yet, since 2017, imports have been on the rise, and Canada’s share has remained constant at around 1,350 tonnes yearly.

Even if this volume is relatively low, the horse welfare abuses detected in the production chains are highly problematic. These significant shortcomings in the sector, not only on animal welfare but also on traceability, have been underlined by recent NGO investigations. Furthermore, the EU legislation that imposes a six-month residency period, during which horses are not allowed to receive any medication, has created many additional concerns in terms of horse welfare. During this residency period, the animals are kept in horrifying conditions in open-air feedlots, without any protection from adverse weather or veterinary care for six months until they can be slaughtered.

As animal welfare issues related to farm practices do not fall under the scope of EU animal welfare requirements currently imposed on imports, in a joint letter we call on the European Commission and on the Canadian Minister for International Trade to maximise the opportunities offered by the CETA Regulatory Cooperation Forum (RCF) to improve horse welfare.

The timing has never been better to discuss horse welfare now that it has become a priority of the Canadian government to ban live horse exports, mainly due to poor transport conditions

Sinikka Crosland, President, Canadian Horse Defence Coalition

Moving in this direction would respond to EU citizens’ expectations, as nine out of ten Europeans believe the EU should do more to promote animal welfare awareness worldwide. A petition, which has already gathered nearly 180,000 signatures, calls on the EU to suspend the imports of horse meat from countries where EU requirements on food safety and animal welfare are not respected.

If horse welfare fails to be addressed, the EU should send a clear message to its trading partners stressing that respecting the rules matters, and suspend imports where requirements are not met. In similar conditions, EU imports from Mexican horse meat were suspended in 2015
