UK: COP26 – Recycling Plastics Does Not Work, Says Boris Johnson.

COP26 officially takes place between 31 October – 12 November 2021.

Recycling plastics does not work, says Boris Johnson

Recycling plastic materials “doesn’t work” and “is not the answer” to the threat of global climate change, Boris Johnson has said.

Answering children’s questions ahead of the COP26 climate summit, the PM said reusing plastics “doesn’t begin to address the problem”.

Instead, he said, “we’ve all got to cut down our use of plastic”.

The Recycling Association said the PM had “completely lost the plastic plot”.

The association’s Simon Ellin told BBC Radio 4’s World at One programme Mr Johnson’s comments were “very disappointing” and seemed to conflict with government policy.

During the special event organised by Downing Street, Mr Johnson also jokingly suggested feeding human beings to animals to “bring nature back”.

He told an audience of eight to 12-year-olds that rather than relying on recycling, people should reduce their consumption of plastic products.

Tanya Steele, chief executive of the World Wide Fund for Nature, told the event: “We have to reduce, we have to reuse – I do think we need to do a little bit of recycling, PM, and have some system to do so.”

But the PM added: “It doesn’t work.”

Asked later about Mr Johnson’s comments, his official spokesman said the PM continued to encourage recycling – though he said relying on it alone would be a “red herring”.

There are plans to increase recycling in England, which the government has said “typically results in lower carbon emissions in comparison to manufacturing products from virgin materials”.

“Priority goes to preventing the creation of waste in the first place, followed by preparing waste for reuse; to recycling, and then recovery,” the waste management plan for England said.

The most recent figures for England showed a recycling rate of 45.5% for household waste. Waste policy is largely set by the devolved administrations in the UK.

Each UK council collects its plastic recycling differently. A BBC analysis in 2018 showed there were 39 different sets of rules for what can be put in plastic recycling collections.

‘Bring nature back’

Ms Steele said she believed “we need to bring nature back” and added: “97% of the mass of mammals on this planet is humans and our animals, our domestic animals. Just 3% is left for the wild.”

Mr Johnson said it was “so sad”, and quipped: “We could feed some of the human beings to the animals.”

Ms Steele replied: “We could have a vote later and ask if there’s any candidates.”

The prime minister criticised drinks giant Coca-Cola for being among 12 big corporations “that are producing the overwhelming bulk of the world’s plastics”.

The company sells more than 100 billion throwaway plastic bottles each year, causing problems in countries too small to effectively recycle them, BBC Panorama has found.

Mr Johnson also signalled the government does not want to support new coal mines, as ministers face pressure to prevent a site opening in Cumbria.

And with just days to go before COP26 begins in Glasgow next week, the PM said it was “touch and go” whether the summit would deliver progress.

Millions of lives could be affected by any changes agreed at the conference – and we have devised a quiz for you to discover which policies would have the most impact.

UK: COP26 – (British PM) Boris Johnson ‘very worried’ about Cop26 outcome as he names and shames Coca-Cola.

COP26 officially takes place between 31 October – 12 November 2021.

Boris Johnson ‘very worried’ about Cop26 outcome as he names and shames Coca-Cola

‘I’m very worried, because it might go wrong and we might not get the agreements that we need’

Boris Johnson has said he is “very worried” about the outcome of the Cop26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference being held in Glasgow from Sunday.

And he has named and shamed Coca-Cola as one of the ‘big 12’ producers of plastic pollution.

The Prime Minister described it as being “touch and go” whether Cop26 would be a success. Answering questions from schoolchildren in Downing Street, Mr Johnson, said: “We need as many people as possible to go to net zero so that they are not producing too much carbon dioxide by the middle of the century.

“Now, I think it can be done. It’s going to be very, very tough, this summit. And I’m very worried, because it might go wrong and we might not get the agreements that we need.

“It’s touch and go.”

He also said that while meeting the goals of Cop26 would be “very, very difficult” he added “I think it can be done”.

Boris Johnson told schoolchildren in Downing Street: “If you look at what the UK has done, we’ve cut our own C02 emissions massively, we’ve cut coal emissions massively.”

Mr Johnson chose to host a press conference with children ahead of “perhaps the most important summit that this country has had in our lifetimes”.

Boris Johnson named and shamed Coca-Cola as being one of 12 corporations “producing the overwhelming bulk of the world’s plastics”.

He told a children’s press conference on the climate crisis: “There are about 12 companies at the moment, 12 big corporations, that are producing the overwhelming bulk of the world’s plastics.

“Big famous drinks companies that you may know but I won’t name. I don’t know why not, but I won’t name them.

“Coca-Cola, for instance, and others, which are responsible for producing huge quantities of plastic, and we’ve got to move away from that and we’ve got to find other ways of packaging and selling our stuff.”

Mr Johnson also welcomed Australia’s commitment to a 2050 net zero target.

“That was actually very difficult for Australia because Australia’s very heavily dependent on coal, on lots of carbon-producing industries and they’ve done a heroic thing, the Australians, in getting to that commitment,” he told schoolchildren in Downing Street.

“I hope that they will be joined by lots more countries in that region for the Cop summit.”

There was a lot of “peer pressure” at the summit, with countries following the example of friends and neighbours, he said.

But “it’s very, very far from clear that we will get the progress that we need”, he warned.

The Prime Minister said Cop26 in Glasgow would be “one of the defining summits of our time”.

He told the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) business and investment summit: “Cop26 marks our last best chance to begin the global push to net zero.

“And if we can use that opportunity to deliver real, substantive action on coal, cars, cash and trees, then I really do believe that we can not only keep temperature increases below 1.5 degrees, but also usher in a worldwide green industrial revolution – growing economies by cutting emissions.

“There’s no choice to be made between going green and creating jobs – they are two sides of the same coin.

“And there’s no doubt at all that green investment is the future.”

UK; Twas The Night Before COP26 – British Comedian Joe Lycett Holds ‘Shell’ (Oil Giant) To Account For Their Green Sales Techniques. He Literally Talks Shit !

COP26 officially takes place between 31 October – 12 November 2021.

WAV Comment – Joe Lycett is a British comedian.  The 1 hour special, in which he lampooned ‘Shell’ energy giant the night before the start of COP26 in Scotland was shown on British tv last night – 24/10/21.

It was a great programme in which Lycett impersonated the Shell CEO; (see video); literally talking shit about allegedly just how ‘Green’ Shell is.  Evidence provided in the programme showed that Shell may talk the green talk, but the reality is they are doing much less than their adverts present.

Have we not seen and heard things like this from others before ?

Enjoy;

Shell’s climate promises lampooned in Channel 4 ad starring literal shit-talking Joe Lycett

Comedian Joe Lycett has held energy giant Shell to account for its climate promises in a shit-talking parody ad from broadcaster Channel 4.

The imposter ad was created to promote Lycett’s investigation of Shell, Joe Lycett vs the Oil Giant. In the show he will look to see whether the brand’s sustainability claims can be taken seriously, or whether there is greenwashing afoot.

In the spot, Lycett hints that the ”lots of pictures of forests and windmills” in Shell’s marketing materials may not reflect the full truth of the business’s output.

As part of the show, Lycett is seen trying to get the ad aired, likely unaware its inclusion of several fecal ejections renders it unairable. These restrictions won’t stop the ad from running as part of the episode or online, where it will accumulate many curious viewers. The ad was created by Rumpus Media and distributed by Channel 4 ahead of the Joe Lycett vs the Oil Giant’s debut at 9pm on October 24.

On commissioning the 60-minute episode, Alf Lawrie, head of factual entertainment at Channel 4, said: “Few now deny climate change, but there are powerful vested interests still trying to delay tackling it. Who better to shine his torch of truth into the dark caverns of misinformation than Britain’s most fearless – and most fun – campaigner, Joe Lycett?”

…. there is not a lot I can do about that.

Our views differ on many issues and because of that, hopefully we are NOT related.

I can though ask you please give your support to this petition asking for the British government to act more re climate change issues.

India: Some October Rescues From the Amazing Crew at ‘Animal Aid Unlimited’.

Dear Mark,

It feels like forever since the smiling faces of wonderful volunteers could be seen in all corners of our shelter, spreading joy to so many animals. We’re reading in the newspapers that tourist visas and flights to India will soon be opening up again. The Indian Home Ministry has not issued an official statement yet but the murmurings seem hopeful.

What a thrill it gives us to imagine welcoming our friends back (that means you!), and to witness the magical effect you’ll have on the animals, who will wag and wiggle at the sound of your voices even as you enter the gates!

Blessing’s beautiful recovery

Meet beautiful Blessing. He is one of the gentlest angels we’ve ever met. He’s healthy now, after weeks of daily wound cleaning and new bandages, good food and cheerful days. But oh, has he suffered. Bred for and born into labor, this young donkey never had a chance to experience life as a care-free little soul. He would have spent every day under an almost unbearable load, often managed by children too young for such immense responsibility, who are not educated about animal sentience or welfare.

Thanks to your help we continue to rescue and rehabilitate injured donkeys, educate their owners and sensitize the community about animal welfare.

Make a donation today to help donkeys in need.

Meet the most gracious, polite little dear on earth.

Mange Survivor Monty!

Even when this darling old boy was in excruciating pain, he was gentle, kind and considerate. From the first moment he saw our rescue team, he seemed to want to put his life in our hands. Every day of his 6 week treatment for severe mange, his humble nature only gave pleasure to others. Cured of mange, neutered and a little fattened up, meet mighty old Monty now!

On the move with most cheerful orphan Pixie

Pixie is a bounding, beautiful little girl. But she wouldn’t have survived without lots of helping hands. We rescued Pixie’s mother for a wound on her hoof and later she gave birth at Animal Aid. Sadly, Pixie’s mother was too weak and she passed away a few days later, leaving her beautiful newborn baby in our care to raise.

Pixie has flourished with the other orphans who snuggle together day and night. Many of her new friends are baby bulls who were cast out by owners, often just days old, because allowing them to feed from their mother would cost the owner in milk sales. Bull calfs have no value in the dairy business and are usually sold for leather, or cast out onto the street to die.

Pixie will live permanently in our love and care thanks to your kindness, with zero commercial use, and 100 percent love.

Please donate to support Pixie and other animals in sanctuary.

Kindness, patience and a little luck:

Dena’s Recovery

How this beautiful girl managed to drag herself out of the road after being hit by a vehicle, we will never know. She suffered a serious spine injury that left her completely unable to bear weight. Not just for a few days, but for 8 weeks of physiotherapy and bed-rest. We named her Dena, which means “to give” in Hindi. No matter how low she felt, when she couldn’t move her legs or her body, her eyes showered her caregivers with love. Her rehabilitation was so slow that we were losing hope: with full sensation in her toes, we expected her to try to stand long before she did. But one fine day, 2 months after the accident with very little apparent progress, Dena was ready. All by herself, this brave girl stood and took her first trembling steps. And that was just the beginning of what has become a complete, beautiful recovery. Meet strong sweetheart Dena now!

Accidents can take an animal’s joy.

Kindness can give it back. Please donate.

England: Top Animal Welfare Campaigner Member of Parliament (MP) Is Stabbed To Death Today (15/10/21) At Constituency Meeting.

WAV Comment    – 15/10/21 – Today is a very sad day for democracy here in England.

Sir David Amess MP, was stabbed to death whilst holding a normal constituency surgery this morning.  For overseas visitors, a surgery is a meeting between the regional MP and (public) members of the electorate for that area, so they can talk issues, actions with a view to making further progress on any issue covered. Surgeries often take place each week.

All we currently know is that David was stabbed to death by a man aged 25; who is now in police custody.  He leaves a wife and 5 children; and our thoughts go out to them all at this time.

David was a fantastic animal welfare / rights campaigner.  He was one of just a few patrons at the Conservative Animal Welfare Group; and his attributes include introducing the legislation for the Protection Against Cruel Tethering Act in 1988 giving protection to tethered horses and ponies, sponsoring the Horses and Ponies Bill in 1984-5, the Pet Animals Bill in 1990 and also sponsoring the Responsible Pet Ownership Competition for MPs and Peers.

In 2011 he won the Dods Animal Welfare and Environment Award for his leading role in and commitment to animal welfare. The award is given to the Parliamentarian who has done the most to tackle issues concerning the welfare of animals and the natural environment.

In recent years Sir David has successfully campaigned to stop the unethical practice of testing domestic products on animals, tackled the illegal wildlife trade and fought to put an end to puppy farming. He was always a prominent voice on the issue of the culling of badger’s debate, speaking in defence of badgers; and he also consistently voted against any changes to the Hunting Act in order to protect the animals from culling.

David was a great friend and advocate voice for animals and animal welfare; he will be greatly missed in Parliament.

We at WAV thank him for his devotion and commitment to the issue of animal welfare / rights; if there were more like him in the world, then it would be a much better place.

Regards Mark.

EU: 1 million EU citizens ask Commission to ban wild animals in circuses.

1 million EU citizens ask Commission to ban wild animals in circuses

Members of the Stop Circus Suffering campaign gathered outside the European Commission’s Berlaymont building on Wednesday (13 October) to celebrate the collection of 1 million signatures on a petition to ban the use of wild animals in circuses.

The ceremony was led by the animal welfare association Eurogroup for Animals and wildlife protection coalition InfoCircos, who started the petition in 2018. The two groups handed the petition over to MEPs Eleonora Evi (Greens/EFA) and Anja Hazekamp (the Left), who will submit the signatures to the Commission.

“One million citizens have spoken. Now we need to turn this public mobilisation into political engagement. Only an EU-wide ban can guarantee the end of this outdated entertainment and provide a coherent and effective solution to the physical and emotional suffering of wild animals in circuses,” said Reineke Hameleers, CEO of Eurogroup for Animals.

In a February 2021 survey across seven member states, the Eurogroup for Animals found that 68% of respondents felt that using wild animals in circuses is cruel and that wild animals should not be used for public entertainment.

“European citizens have had enough of wild animals being abused in circuses,” said Marta Merchan, coordinator of InfoCircos.

Four Paws, one of the 81 animal advocacy groups within the Eurogroup for Animals, was present at Wednesday’s ceremony.

“It is beyond time to end this cruel practice and adopt a coordinated and full ban on the use of wild animals in circuses EU-wide,” said Pierre Sultana, director of the Four Paws European Policy Office.

Risks and solutions

Nineteen EU member states have adopted national bans on the use of wild animals in circuses, three of which prohibit the use of all species, according to a recent report from the Eurogroup for Animals.

The UK and five EU member states have brought forward general restrictions to protect animals in circuses. Still, the organisation says regulations tend to differ between countries and do not yet exist in several member states.

Many EU countries still allow circus animals to be transported across their borders to get to countries without restrictions where the circuses can perform. This poses a severe public safety risk and health and welfare risks for animals, experts said.

“Wild animals in circuses greatly suffer from physical and social deprivations, and their training is frequently based on punishment. Animals who are forced to live in unnatural conditions can react in ways which pose a risk to their tamers,” Evi said.

Organisation leaders emphasised the importance of an EU-wide ban because national bans do not prevent the cross-border transportation of wildlife.

Eurogroup for Animals recorded 14 EU countries with a total of 254 circuses that house wild animals. Germany topped the list, with 75 circuses and approximately 200 wild animals, excluding camelids (a category of animals that includes camels, alpacas and llamas).

The report also includes information on rescue centres and sanctuaries in Europe and South Africa, all of which have been deemed “particularly appropriate to rescue circus animals.”

“Public support for the use of wild animals for entertainment is long gone,” said Hazekamp. “It’s time to show future generations that animals deserve our respect and protection and should not suffer in circuses.”

2/10/21 Is World Farm Animals Day. Plus More On South Korean Dog Meat Issues.

Today- 2/10/21 is World Farm Animals Day – Links:

More on South Korean Dogs.

Reuters reported on September 27, 2021, “South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in said on Monday there might be a need to prohibit dog meat consumption amid debate over the controversial practice and growing awareness of animal rights.

While no longer as common as before, dog meat is eaten mainly by older people and is served in some restaurants and can be bought at specific markets.

Moon made the remarks after being briefed by Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum on efforts to improve the handling of abandoned animals and a mandatory registration system for dogs.

“After the briefing, he said time has come to carefully consider imposing a dog meat ban,” Moon’s spokeswoman Park Kyung-mee said in a statement.”

Click HERE to read the news.

This is great news and gives us hope that perhaps finally changes will come and we will see the end of the horrific dog meat industry in South Korea. This is a sign that the Korean government is starting to feel the pressure from many decades of campaigns and hard work by animal advocates both in and outside of South Korea to end the shameful and cruel dog and cat meat cruelty.

However, while we celebrate this good news, this is not the time to slow our campaign and lose momentum.

Unfortunately, we have heard similarly encouraging news in the past, with few actual results. For example, while he was campaigning for the Presidential elections, Moon Jae-In made a campaign pledge to strengthen animal welfare.

But as President, he has done nothing to address the dog meat issue. It now seems like he may have suggested reforming the dog meat industry as a way to appeal to a domestic and international population which has become increasingly concerned with the cruelty to dogs and cats in South Korea. Regardless of his actual intentions, considering he will only be in office until May 10, 2022, at this point it is obvious that there is very little time remaining for him to actually bring the end to the dog meat consumption.

Former President Donald Trump apparently thinks a meat-free diet impairs a person’s cognitive function, ex-White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham claims in an excerpt from her new tell-all book published Friday.

He told her that switching to a vegan diet ‘messes with your body chemistry’ and feared it would make him lose ‘brain cells.’

Great American Food

In 2019 he was widely mocked for providing the Clemson University Tigers NCAA team with ‘great American food’ to celebrate their victory – which included McDonalds, Wendy’s and Domino’s served with formal White House silverware.
