In order for all people in the world to be vaccinated against the new coronavirus, half a million sharks might have to die.
Squalene is found in vaccines that manufacturers are experimenting with. The substance that strengthens the body’s immune response and thus the effectiveness of vaccination is obtained from the oil of shark liver.
For billions of corona vaccinations, thousands of sharks would have to die!
Around 3,000 sharks have to be killed to produce around a ton of squalene.
In order to produce enough squalene to provide every person in the world with a vaccine dose, 250,000 sharks would have to die, calculates the animal protection organization “Shark Allies”.
If everyone needed two doses of vaccine to immunize against Covid-19, it would be half a million sharks.
Shark populations would not be able to cope with the mass production of vaccinations
Many shark species are already threatened, declared the animal rights activists in their petition on the Internet portal change.org.
Exploiting them for the mass production of vaccines could have catastrophic consequences for the predatory fish population.
“Harvesting something from a wild animal is never going to be sustainable, especially if it’s a top predator that doesn’t reproduce in huge numbers”, explained Stefanie Brendl, the chairwoman of the animal welfare organization.
“Shark Allies” started a petition calling for the organization to stop the use of animal squalene.
There are more non-animal alternatives: Squalene is not only found in shark livers, but also in certain plants.
Declaration by the organization on this matter: “After yesterday’s post where we announced that shark-derived squalene is a common ingredient in vaccines (including current COVID-19 vaccine development), you are probably wondering why squalene even needs to be in them?
Squalene is used as an ingredient in some adjuvants, which are a common component of vaccines. Adjuvants are intended to increase a human body’s immune response to that vaccine. In other words, it increases the vaccine’s efficacy.
Adjuvants also allow for less of the active vaccine ingredients/antigen to be needed and contained in a single dose.
As a result, more vaccines can be produced.
But at what cost? Why are we choosing to kill more sharks, taking them from their ecosystems? Sourcing squalene for vaccine adjuvants from sharks means taking an ingredient from wild animal species that are limited in numbers. Many shark species are already extremely threatened by overfishing. This is a disturbing fact considering that non-animal derived squalene is readily available and just as effective! Non-animal squalene sources include olive oil, sugarcane, yeast, bacteria, and even algae! The industry must listen.

To be clear, we are in NO way trying to hinder or slow down the development of a COVID-19 vaccine or any other critical treatment that is needed to protect humanity from illness. What we are asking is three-fold:
1. sustainably sourced squalene be used in all non-critical applications,
2. all future testing of adjuvanted vaccines should give non-animal derived sources equal consideration, and
3. that the companies on the forefront of COVID-19 vaccine development start testing non-animal derived squalene to eventually replace it.
At Shark Allies, we believe that it is extremely important to back up all claims by science. To dive deeper into this topic, please visit our “Science and Research” tab under “Resources” on our website.
And I mean… Is it not enough that this pandemic was made by human hands, now the animals should pay the costs?
Who is responsible for this massacre, if it actually happens?
The real plague of this planet: human beings.
It is difficult to find the right words to define this only animal on this planet that lives from the massacre of others.
We don’t need tolerance for such crimes and criminals
My best regards to all, Venus
