The long history of murdered animal rights and environmental activists

With the recent passing of Regan Russell who died when run over by a slaughterhouse truck at a vigil in Canada, a long horrible chain of violence has been added to.

Below is a timeline of vegan activists who died speaking out for the animals. When possible I have posted pictures of the slain individuals so they can be more than just words on a page.

1976, January 6th: William Sweet, LACS member Anti-hunting activist, Murdered after an altercation with a man who was shooting birds. His murderer was jailed for life but was later released.

The Photographer Fernando Pereira (right) and Rongelap Islander Bonemej Namwe ride ashore in the ‘bum bum’. Born on Kwajalein, Namwe, 62, has lived most of her life on Rongelap. The Rainbow Warrior is in Rongelap to assist in the evacuation of islanders to Mejato. Rongelap suffered nuclear fallout in 1954, making it a hazardous place for this community to continue living in. Eyes of Fire: p49

1985 October 7th: Fernando Pereira a Greenpeace photographer was murdered by the French Secret Service when the vessel “Rainbow Warrior” was sunk by two explosions in Auckland Harbor, New Zealand.

1988, December 22nd: Chico Mendes an anti-deforestation activist was murdered in his own home after an assassination order by a cattle rancher. He was the 19th Brazilian rainforest activist murdered that year.

1991, February 9th: Mike Hill an 18-year-old hunt saboteur was deliberately run over and killed during a meet of the Cheshire Beagles. Death is deemed “accidental”. No charges are brought against the driver Allan Summersgill.

1993, April 3rd: 15-year-old hunt saboteur, Tom Warby, is deliberately run over and killed by a fox hunter as other huntsmen stand and laugh, proclaiming a “victory”. The driver, Alan Ball, is not prosecuted.

1995, February 1st: Jill Phipps was a 31-year-old British activist and mother, who was crushed to death under the wheels of a veal transporter truck carrying live animals for export at a protest at Coventry airport. The Crown Prosecution Service decided not to bring any charges against the driver.

1995, March: Dr. Karel Van Noppen was a Belgium veterinarian who was assassinated in 1993 by hitmen after exposing mafia connections to the meat industry. Dr. Van Noppen was the victim of a powerful, international mafia who violently imposing its rule on the meat business, ruthlessly bullying anyone daring to stand in its way. In 1995, a few days before his murder, Van Noppen was explicitly threatened by people linked to the “hormone black mafia” underworld.

1998, September 17th: David “Gypsy” Chain was an American eco-activist who was crushed to death after an irate logger fell a tree on him in California’s redwood forest. On September 17, 1998, the 24-year-old environmental activist was crushed to death by a falling tree at the Headwaters Forest in Northern California.

Activists from Earth First! accused loggers of deliberately cutting down trees in their direction, part of escalating violence against activists condoned by the Pacific Lumber Company and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department.

Gypsy was part of an action to stop PL from destroying one of the last ancient redwood forests in the world.

The logging operation was illegal as a survey had yet to be done for the marbled murrelet, an endangered species of bird. PL attempted to portray death as a “freak accident” and even tried to blame the victim as well as Earth First! According to PL spokesperson, Mary Bullwinkle:

“Despite all our precautions, a trespasser was apparently killed by a falling tree at one of our logging sites on our private property.”

On September 18, Earth First! released a videotape revealing that loggers not only knew that demonstrators were in the area, but were angrily threatening them shortly before Gypsy was killed.

A logger shown shouting profanities and threats was, according to Earth First!, the very same logger who felled the tree that struck David. The video also showed activists scrambling up a steep hillside to escape falling trees. According to a witness statement:

“Gypsy’s death is not an isolated incident of violence. In the last several month’s trees have been intentionally felled at nonviolent activists at the Luna tree sit and in the Mattole watershed in Humboldt County. This is part of an escalation of violence against nonviolent forest defenders in the Northwest and all over the world.”

On September 18, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department issued preliminary findings concluding that the death was “accidental”. According to an Earth First! activist speaking at a press conference, “Police have routinely refused to file charges against anybody who assaults a forest activist.” In 1999, Mr. Chain’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against PL. The company settled out of court in October of 2001, just three days before the trial was set to begin.

2003: Animal rights activist Jane Tipson is murdered in an alleged contract killing after protesting against the construction of a dolphin aquarium in St Lucia. To this day, her killers have not been found or prosecuted.

2005: 73-year-old anti-deforestation campaigner, Dorothy Stang, is approached in the Amazon by 2 armed men working on behalf of an animal agriculture organization. Asked if she has any weapons, she produces her Bible and says that’s all she has. She is shot in the stomach, then fatally shot 5 more times as she lays on the ground.

2006: Joan Root, a conservationist, and activist against poaching and illegal fishing are murdered by 4 gunmen in her own home. To this day, her killers have not been found or prosecuted.

2010, May 12th: Elvio Fichera a volunteer for the Association of Abandoned Animals was murdered while trying to serve a warrant with police on Renzo Castagnola for cruelty to animals. Renzo Castagnola shot Elvio dead.

May 12, 2010: Paola Quartini, an animal activist for LIPU (Italian League for Bird Protection – UK) from Genoa, Italy was murdered whilst trying, with police, to serve a warrant on Renzo Castagnola for cruelty to animals. Renzo Castagnola shot him dead.

2011: Two anti-deforestation activists, Jose Claudio Ribeiro da Silva and Maria do Espirito Santo, are shot dead by hired thugs, after years of constant death threats from cattle ranchers. The main suspect is acquitted. No other prosecutions.

2013: Jairo Mora Sandoval, a sea turtle activist, is bound, beaten, then fatally shot in the head by sea turtle poachers, after being kidnapped along with 4 other activists.

2020, June 19th: Regan Russell, an activist with the Animal Save Movement was murdered by a slaughterhouse truck driver that by all accounts did so on purpose.

We remember our fellow fallen friends by continuing on with the activism they died for. Any single one of their deaths could easily have been ours and that’s one reason their deaths hit so hard. Every time we go to a vigil, protest, shutdown, undercover investigation, or any form of protest we place our lives at risk so that we can help change the world.

Never forgetting those who have sacrificed everything for a more just and equal world is the least we can do but it’s even better if we remember on the days we are too tired, or sick to go to an event.

In the end, we are all brothers and sisters in this together fighting for what’s right.

We are all in this together.

We continue to fight.
We owe it to the victims, human and animal victims

My best regards to all, Venus

Making new EU animal welfare law: you can help

10 July 2020

News

Important news!

We are getting new animal welfare laws at EU level for the first time in over a decade.

Through it’s ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy, the European Commission has committed to a revision of the laws on live animal transport (Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005) and slaughter (Council Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009. And, the Commission will review all of the existing law relating to animal welfare at EU level and broaden its scope, so we may see other new legislation too.

Fitness check

Before starting on such new legislation, the Commission evaluates whether current EU laws are delivering on their objectives in the best way possible. This means conducting a ‘fitness check’ on the current law in the area of animal welfare.

This fitness check is taking place now!

Until 31 July 2020, the Commission is asking for the views of organisations and citizens as to the roadmap of the fitness check. This means that they will design what the fitness check looks at in terms of animal welfare law at EU level. It is important to provide evidence on all laws that are not working properly -or the absence thereof-  so as to make sure animals will be better protected in the future.

We need your help!

Please use the brief to enter your input into the consultations. Draw on all of your (organisation’s) experience from real world examples of where EU legislation on animal welfare is simply not up to scratch!

This is the start of a long process, but finally we are getting new law at EU level again, and this will have a massive impact on billions of lives of animals.

Want to help Stop Pandemics and make Europe a safer and better place for animals and humans?

As of 11th June, our 70 Member Organisations in 25 EU Member States will be calling on their MEPs to integrate our recommendations for the EU Green Deal’s Farm-to-Fork and Biodiversity to 2030 strategies. Released on 20th May, both strategies contain positive points that suggest the European Commission is ready to take action for animals – but will they deliver the concrete changes the EU needs to move away from intensive farming and the exploitation of wild animals and their habitats?

During the preparation of the strategies, the COVID-19 pandemic offered a timely reminder that devastating results can come from the way we trade, farm and keep animals.

Wild and domestic animals have carried viruses and bacteria for millennia, but what has changed is the way we humans interact with them. The legal and illegal wildlife trade, urbanisation and the destruction of wildlife’s natural habitats for agricultural purposes, especially for the intensification of animal farming, are combining to push humans, wildlife and other animals closer than ever before – and heightening the risk of pandemics like the one we’re suffering now.

The European Parliament will now respond to the Farm-to-Fork and Biodiversity to 2030 strategies with two Own Initiative Reports – and this is our opportunity to further influence the implementation of the two strategies into concrete actions. With this new phase of our ‘Stop Pandemics – Start here’ campaign, we want to make sure citizens’ voices are heard at this crucial moment for animals.

Hi all;

Both Venus and myself have been having some issues over the last few days, hence the restricted ability at the moment to try and post several posts regarding animal issues each day.

Hopefully later this week we will e better health wise and will be able to get more back to normal.

This morning I have had contact with our friends at Peta in India.  I am copying their words and showing the very disturbing video which goes with it – re the continuing existence of wet markets; this time in India itself.  Personally, I have major concerns that many national governments who are trying to do their best with Covid / Coronavirus, do not have the guts to make contact with overseas nations and governments which still allow wet markets to exists.  Watch the video and what is happening – then tell me that Covid will reduce; I doubt it !

As of today, 13/7/20; India has 879,888 cases of Coronavirus; and currently 23,200 deaths.

https://www.aa.com.tr/en/asia-pacific/over-28-500-coronavirus-cases-in-india-in-last-24-hours/1908303

Look at the article from the BBC (UK) 4 days ago:  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-53284144

And yet still; there seems to be no movement from governments to completely shut down wet markets.  We are constantly informed that the original source of the virus was at a wet market Wuhan in China; see some of our past links:

…  and there are more; but the above provide enough info on the issue.

All we can ask is that people contact their own national governments / representatives; and supply them with the video link issued by Peta India.

Here is the link if you wish to copy and send to your ‘masters’;-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdH-yfZ31rE&feature=youtu.be

– does the very start of this video not make it clear why the world is in crisis ?

Only when governments have the guts to contact others and start asking questions about why wet markets STILL continue, and Coronavirus cases are on the rise in some of these nations; will we really start to address the issue.  I really think that until we witness decisive action from the WHO, and national governments which still allow the existence of these wet markets; we will all globally be confined to a life which is now very different to what we have experienced in the past.  For how long have the animal rights movement been trying to show problems associated with wet markets ?  – they were ignored, abut now the world is suffering big time as a result.

Gold fever, Covid 19 and the genocide of the Yanomami indigenous people of the Amazon.

I found this article on Barbara’s site tragic; and at the same time very informative about what is happening right now; today, in the Amazon; how the ancient peoples of the jungles are being destroyed.  At the end I copy a quote which sadly, is so very true, issues so very ignored by those in power who haver the possibility to change things for the better, but fail to do so.

Please read the full article – link given below; and learn more about the suffering of the indigenous people of the Amazon.  Rage and repent, but above all – read it !

Regards Mark (WAV)

Yanomami leaders say that wildcat gold miners are responsible for bringing coronavirus into their communities. They are very concerned because over 25,000 gold miners are now operating in their preserve, destroying the forest to clear spaces for mining pits, polluting the rivers with mercury and contaminating fish.

Deafening noise from their machines and high powered hoses scare off game animals, leaving nothing for the Yanomami to hunt.

As the virus spreads throughout Brazil, the gold rush in the Amazon continues unabated, accelerating the devastation among the 850,000 indigenous people in the country.

“When you cut down the trees you assault the spirits of our ancestors.

When you dig for minerals you impale the heart of the Earth. And when you pour poisons on the land and into the rivers – chemicals from agriculture and mercury from gold mines – you weaken the spirits, the plants, the animals and the land itself.

When you weaken the land like that, it starts to die. If the land dies, if our Earth dies, then none of us will be able to live, and we too will all die.” – cacique Raoni Metuktire

WAV Comment – the Conservatives who are supposed to be led by Boris Johnson and have a large majority in parliament which can vote through legislation; have routinely failed in their protection of animals.  They have done nothing to stop Badger killings; have done nothing to stop live exports, despite their own CAWG harping on about how terrible it is, but again not doing anything about it;  and they have done nothing to stop trophy hunting and more.  From all this it can be deduced that the Conservatives and Mr Johnson are all talk and in reality; NO action.  People dont forget.

USA: Walter Palmer; the Dentist Who Murdered Cecil the Lion, Now Hunts Endangered Sheep In Mongolia on a £80,000 Murder Spree.

WAV Comment – The ‘Daily Mirror’ is a UK national newspaper; and they have an exclusive here on US dentist, and the killer of Cecil the lion; Walter Palmer; returning this time to Mongolia to kill sheep with a bow and arrow.  The HIS, who we very much respect, have made a statement about this below.  They have to be politically correct because of their position; we don’t; so we call this utter tosser nothing but a soiled asshole; just like his President and the members of his family who do the same ‘he man’ activities !

Dentist who killed Cecil the lion back hunting as new photo shows sick slaughter

EXCLUSIVE: Walter Palmer, 60, sparked global backlash after killing much-loved lion Cecil in Zimbabwe, almost exactly five years ago – now he’s been pictured showing off a slaughtered sheep

The dentist who slayed Cecil the lion five years ago is hunting again.

Walter Palmer, 60, paid up to £80,000 to slaughter a huge ram in Mongolia.

But after the outrage over the death of Cecil, the American “driller killer’s” face is hidden on photos boasting of the hunt.

Humane Society International said: “Clearly the killing for kicks continues”.

In a new photo – with his face hidden from view – the man who killed Cecil the lion shows off a slaughtered wild sheep.

The image was taken on a sickening trip that proves dentist Palmer has returned to trophy hunting.

It comes despite the global backlash the American sparked after slaying much-loved lion Cecil in Zimbabwe, almost exactly five years ago.

Palmer paid up to £80,000 for the trip to hunt Altai argali – the world’s biggest type of sheep – in Mongolia.

Dr Teresa Telecky, wildlife vice-president at Humane Society International, said: “For trophy hunters to travel to Mongolia to kill a beautiful and endangered ram is an absolute outrage.

“The argali ram is a species in danger of extinction, so the idea that these animals can be killed for pleasure is abhorrent.

“The killing of Cecil the lion five years ago caused international shock. But clearly the killing for kicks continues.

“It’s time for the law to stop wildlife killers in their tracks by banning trophy hunting.”

The Mirror is campaigning for an end to trophy hunting and calling on the UK Government to ban the import of animals killed for pleasure.

Palmer’s trip to Mongolia last August is thought to have lasted up to a week, after travelling 5,800 miles from his home state of Minnesota.

Palmer and his friend Brent Sinclair met local guides before heading into the mountains to track their prey.

The two men have travelled the world together to kill animals for fun.

It is understood the ram, said to be a “much older male”, was killed with an arrow from around 30 yards.

A source claims Palmer has several more trips planned.

The insider said: “At the time of Cecil’s death, Walter took a back seat. But he’s been hunting ever since he was a boy. It’s a way of life to him. Walter has undertaken several hunts since Cecil’s death.

“The trip to Mongolia was his idea. The ram was on his list of hunts he wanted to complete.”

The sheep is still in Mongolia for now.

US officials have yet to grant the permit for it to be exported to America.

Of their hunt to kill the Altai argali, Sinclair was careful not to name Palmer on social media posts, instead calling him “amigo”.

Writing on his public Facebook page, Sinclair said of the driller killer: “I have booked more hunting trips with this guy over the past 20 years than I can count.

“Together, we have travelled to many far reaches of the world.”

He talked about them once killing an elephant, but said the trip to slaughter the sheep may be “at the top of the pinnacle and hard to beat”.

He added: “Thanks, Amigo for the adventure… look forward to our next one.”

The Mirror spoke to Palmer as he emerged from a bar in Bloomington, Minnesota, after he had taken an early lunch.

He smiled at first, but his face turned to anger when shown the pictures of his hunt in Mongolia.

He refused to talk, driving off in his £95,000 Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Dad-of-two Palmer refuses to hunt with a gun, using a bow and arrow instead.

He is known to spend hours practising at his million-dollar five-bedroom home in Eden Prairie, near Minneapolis, and his holiday house in Marco Island, Florida.

Palmer was with Sinclair, who arranges hunts for wealthy Americans, when Cecil the lion was killed.

The magnificent creature was a huge attraction in Hwange National Park.

At the time, he was being tracked through a GPS satellite collar by a research team at Oxford University as part of a long-term study.

The 13-year-old black-maned lion was wounded with an arrow, then tracked and killed with a second dart the following morning, around 12 hours later.

Police investigated after a claim that Cecil was slaughtered illegally. There were accusations bait was used to lure him out of his protected habitat.

However, Zimbabwe’s High Court threw out charges against Palmer’s guide Theo Bronkhorst.

The court agreed with the defence that it could not have been a crime because the American had a legal permit to hunt.

It is thought the trip cost Palmer around £40,000. Afterwards, the dentist said: “If I had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study, obviously I wouldn’t have taken it.

“Nobody in our hunting party knew before or after the name of this lion.”

Two weeks after Palmer’s trip to Mongolia last year, the US President’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr also travelled there to hunt the sheep.

It cost American taxpayers £60,000 for the cost of secret service agents.

Critics argue that Trump Jr’s love of killing big game is the reason why his dad has rolled back restrictions on imports of hunting trophies.

Right now, as you read this, billions of frogs across the world are being tortured, maimed, and killed. Stolen from the wild, they die in pain. It is estimated that in Asia alone, between 180 million and a billion frogs are currently stolen each year for use in traditional ‘medicine’.

  • In Laos, tiny rice paddy frogs are dipped into boiling oil and fried alive on sticks. Or they are put into blenders and liquidized before being added to curries and stews, boiled in soups or barbecued on an open flame.

In Vietnam and Japan, live bullfrogs are served to diners, filleted while their hearts are still beating.

  • In China, Asiatic grass frogs – a protected species – are butchered for use in traditional ‘medicine’ (hasma is made with the fallopian tubes of dried-up female frogs and is supposed to help consumers “look younger”).

Video footage from Cambodia shows frogs kicking and squirming in pain as their snouts and rear legs are cut off with scissors. Still alive, they are thrown in a pile of other maimed frogs and left to endure a slow death. These frogs are not only massacred for their legs, they are also turned into trinkets and curios for the tourist industry.

  • In Europe and the United States, an exploding exotic pet trade sees glass frogs plucked from tropical rainforests and stuffed into tiny glass containers, destined for the pet trade. Many frogs die before reaching their destination and those that don’t die later perish from the long-term effects of capture and transport.
  • Across the world, aquatic African clawed frogs, semiterrestrial bullfrogs, and terrestrial toads are still used in classroom dissections and teaching exercises in a harrowing process known as “pithing”. Pithing leaves the frogs defenceless while students cut them open, apply drugs to their beating hearts, and attach electrodes to their exposed leg muscles after peeling off their skin.

The cruelty being inflicted on frogs for cosmetics or when they are barbarically killed for a sick frill for diners is so blatant, so abhorrent and so dangerous that governments must act now.

The havoc with nature caused by this trade has potentially irreversible negative consequences for the entire planet.

Frogs play a vital role in the food chain, as both predators and prey. As tadpoles, frogs eat algae, reducing the chances of algal contamination and they, in turn, are an important source of food for birds, fish, monkeys and snakes.

Their diet includes mosquitoes, lowering the transmission risk of killer diseases including Dengue fever, malaria, West Nile fever and Zika.

Right now, frogs are racing headlong to extinction, but if we act fast to stop the international trade, we will give the frogs a better chance of survival and save billions of creatures from merciless cruelty.

Every single animal life is important. Please support us in our efforts

The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA)

is currently accepting public comments on its proposed new regulation

that would recommend—and allow—that food and beverage companies conduct painful and deadly experiments on animals in a misleading attempt to support dubious health claims for their products and ingredients.

The experiments are undoubtedly cruel—and also scientifically useless because of the significant biological differences between rats and humans. Numerous countries around the world—including the U.S. and Canada and those in the European Union—don’t suggest that animal tests be conducted in order to make health claims for foods.

Taiwan needs to get in sync with the global community and eliminate these experiments, not recommend or allow them. Please ACT NOW to speak up for animals before the July 26 deadline.

WAV Comment – This is disgusting and illegal; yet cretins of the human race pump money into a go fund me site to clear wildlife from their area.  It just shows what some are like – as we say; cretins; probably too good a word for them.  Lets hope that all involved in this terrible crime to wildlife have the full force of the legal system thrown at them.

Also; .lets hope that all the residents who funded this killing spree of an innocent animal NEVER get their donations back – we hope the money will be given to Project Coyote by an act of law  Disgusting humans !

Coyote Pup Illegally Trapped & Fatally Maimed in Cruel Leghold Trap

Incident Under Criminal Investigation ~ Wildlife Protection Organizations Call for Justice

VALLEY VILLAGE, CA—California-based Project Coyote has released a video depicting a coyote pup captured in an illegally set leghold trap in the upscale neighborhood of Valley Village (adjacent to North Hollywood), and law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the incident for possible criminal violations.

The video shows—in graphic detail—the coyote pup struggling in the trap, desperate to free itself, with no cover in the searing summer heat. It is believed that the pup suffered in the trap for days before local residents heard it crying in pain and came to its rescue. The animal’s distress was so great, as is evident in the video, that at one point a caring girl felt compelled to offer water to the pup, but it suffered such severe injuries from the trap that it was later euthanized by Los Angeles Animal Services.

“Ironically this coyote was trapped through a GoFundMe campaign organized by Valley Village resident Lisa Johnson Mandell who solicited money from neighbors for ‘humane wildlife removal,’” said Project Coyote’s Southern California Representative Randi Feilich. “In talking to neighborhood residents, I found they were shocked to learn that donations were used to hire a trapper to set cruel, indiscriminate and illegal leghold traps. According to Feilich, the GoFundMe page has since been deactivated.

The trapper is believed to have violated multiple state laws and is now under investigation by Los Angeles Animal Cruelty Task Force and the California Department of Wildlife. “Leghold traps were banned by California voters in 1998 so this trap set is clearly in violation of that law,” said Camilla Fox, Project Coyote Founder and Executive Director. “Moreover, California law requires that trappers check their traps daily and obtain written permission from property owners when setting traps less than 150 yards from a residence, which this trapper clearly failed to do.”

“We commend the multiple law enforcement agencies involved in this case for their due diligence in investigating this incident, and we hope the trapper and anyone else responsible will receive the stiffest sentence possible under the law,” said Feilich, who spoke to authorities and neighborhood residents in producing the video released on Project Coyote’s YouTube page and on Valley Village’s Nextdoor site. “We also believe many residents who generously donated money to this GoFundMe page were misled by the organizer into thinking they were hiring a humane wildlife control business to remove the coyote, but instead their donations were used to fund the worst type of illegal animal cruelty, resulting in a slow and painful death to a young coyote pup.”

“Despite a state law banning leghold traps, many private trappers and ‘pest’ control businesses continue to use them in clear violation of the law,” said Fox. “Until these trappers receive more than a slap on the wrist, they will continue to flagrantly violate the law. We must crackdown on this unconscionable cruelty so another animal does not suffer such a painful and needless death.”
