Washington state is moving forward with yet another kill order to slaughter more wolves. Now the state wants to kill up to eight members of the Old Profanity Territory pack, including pups born this spring.
All this is happening at the behest of a powerful rancher grazing his cattle on prime wolf habitat — and we need your help to stop it.
It’s likely the state will once again use aerial snipers in helicopters to gun down these wolves — at least one of which is collared — following up with on-the-ground kills of wounded animals. This asymmetrical warfare against wild creatures is sick.
Last fall they killed the pack’s breeding female and a 4-month-old pup, leaving behind only the father wolf and a pup. New wolves have joined this family unit, and more pups were born.
But in early July Washington gunned down the father wolf, and now they aim to kill as many as they can, up to eight more wolves, including the new pups.
Washington state has a long history of gunning down wolves within its borders. Since 2012 Washington has killed 23 state-endangered wolves, 19 of which were killed for the same livestock owner who is trying to eliminate the Old Profanity Territory pack.
The Center’s litigation to shut down Washington’s disgraceful kill protocol is still playing out in court. The state has no business gunning down wolves and destroying packs on public lands.
The Devastating Consequences of Animal Agriculture on Earth
We all need to see this video. We only have one home, let’s protect it!
This video gives a bleak picture of how animal husbandry destroys the environment and negatively affects life on Earth.
Almost a third of the earth is used for animal husbandry.
The Amazon Rainforest is destroyed for meat production.
Wild animals lose their home, many die out.
In animal husbandry 20-30% of the total fresh water is consumed.
Fertile land turns into desert.
Animal waste pollutes the precious water and the environment.
18% of greenhouse gas emissions come from animal husbandry.
Industrial fisheries are overfishing the oceans!
We only have one planet and we all have a responsibility to protect it!
WAV Comment: What an amazing product this could be if adopted by many producers. Just imagine what it could result in – less environmental destruction, and trees being left for the Orangutans to live in !
This could be the start of a massive change for the positive; we hope so and wish C16 Biosciences all the best in their work to develop a lab grown alternative to palm oil. This really could be a world changer !
Palm Oil produced in the lab?
Green startup C16 Biosciences has developed a lab-grown alternative to palm oil. Palm oil—an industry that is estimated to be worth $88 billion—is used in a number of everyday products such as food, clothes, shampoo, cosmetics, and fuel and is associated with deforestation of rainforests in Costa Rica and Indonesia to make way for palm tree plantations, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and destroying habitats for people and endangered wild animals along the way.
Using synthetic biology, C16 was able to create a sustainable, environmentally-friendly alternative to palm oil using yeast, that grows in tap water, and feeding it a feedstock or carbon source to multiply.
Given the wide use of palm oil in products, the company is concentrating its efforts to replace the use of palm oil in a portion of the market, starting with the skincare and cosmetics industries. “Fermentation is a well-proven commercial process that has been used for centuries to convert raw materials into consumable commercial products consumed by billions of people every day,”
C16’s website says. “We believe that brewing palm oil like beer is the best and most likely path to developing a truly sustainable palm oil alternative.”
Palm oil is everywhere: it’s in our food, clothes, shampoo, and even the fuel that powers our cars. But this $61 billion industry has drastic environmental and societal costs: rainforests from Costa Rica to Indonesia are destroyed to make way for oil palm tree plantations, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and destroying habitats for people and endangered wildlife along the way.
But palm oil doesn’t have to be a problem. There remains an urgent need for consumers and companies alike to switch to environmentally conscious, sustainable palm oil products.
Mission
C16 was founded with the objective of creating a sustainable, environmentally friendly alternative to conflict palm oil. By offering producers, refiners, traders and consumers of palm oil an opportunity to invest part of their production into bio-based oils and sustainability efforts, our aim is to reduce the environmental footprint of palm oil production and protect precious natural land, wildlife and resources in the process.
Our Technology
We’ve developed technology to brew a sustainable alternative to palm oil from microbes.
Fermentation is a well-proven commercial process that has been used for centuries to convert raw materials into consumable commercial products consumed by billions of people every day. We believe that brewing palm oil like beer is the best and most likely path to developing a truly sustainable palm oil alternative.
Our palm oil is sustainable — it doesn’t involve deforestation, endangering precious animal species, or forcing inhumane labour practices. The result is a world where consumers can enjoy the products they love without worrying about the dangerous practices involved in making them.
But there is no reason to celebrate: Tigers are hunted mercilessly by poachers, these beautiful big cats are among the endangered species. In addition, the palm oil industry, which is responsible for clearing forests, has catastrophic consequences for the habitat of the tiger and for the worldwide biodiversity.
We have to do something about it before it’s too late!
Do you know these four startling facts about Tiger?
✴️ 4,000 € – 22,000 € – that’s how much a tiger in the EU costs
✴️ 1,412 – so many live captive-bred tigers were exported from the EU between 1999 and 2016
✴️ 8,278 – that’s the number of illegal tiger products (such as tiger soup cubes, teeth and claws) seized during the same period
✴️ 3,900 – so few tigers still live in the wild (the exact number of captive tigers is unknown)
Tigers are threatened with extinction. The world has already lost over 90 percent of its tiger population, because there are only about 3,900 of the animals in the wild.
In 2010, there were still an estimated 3,200 tigers in the wild in 13 states of Asia.
One hundred years ago there were more than 100,000 animals. Currently only five subspecies live, three are already extinct and one has not been spotted for decades.
About 20,000 tigers now live in captivity, most of them in zoos, tiger farms or privately owned.
This dramatic decline is the result of a perpetual demand for tigers. Their body parts are marketed and showcased live animals for commercial purposes. The commercial trade in live tigers and tiger products – whether born of the wild or in captivity – must be stopped! Legal trade fuels illegal trafficking and poses a great threat to the last tigers in the wild.
It is shocking that captive-born tigers in Europe are still being traded for commercial purposes such as circuses or private ownership and “tiger selfies”.In some European countries, tigers can even be hired for private parties!
private tiger farm in Thailand
There are no exact figures on tiger population and tiger trade within Europe; Nobody knows how many animals are currently kept in Europe, how often they change owners and for what purpose they are used. Also their end of life remains uncertain, in the worst case they are killed and processed to “Tiger wine”or other traditional medicines.
The demand for questionable status symbols such as tiger skins and stuffed animals is growing especially in Indonesia. And the demand for pointless medical devices, such as tiger wine, pills or a paste made of soft-boiled tiger bone also. And, of course, the demand for jewelery products made from tiger bones and skin parts.
Our investigators have discovered that tiger dealers operating in Europe are ready and able to sell and transport tigers to Asia. In countries where the demand for body parts of tigers for medicine is still associated with massive suffering for the animals and the decline of the wild population. In addition, China wants to allow the use of tiger bones and rhino horn of captive-bred animals in hospitals (!!)
Almost everything that comes from the tiger is considered a valuable ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. For example, powder from tiger bone should accelerate healing processes, relieve rheumatism and help against malaria (!!!) On the black market alone, the backbone of a tiger costs up to 700 euros.
China’s economic boom has spawned many new rich people who are now promoting the tiger wine boom due to prosperity. The demand for exotic preparations is increasing rapidly.
We must stop tiger trade. We can not allow that anymore! Call on the EU Commission to ban the trade in tigers!
Let us finally stop the #RuthlessTrade and together we call on the European Commission to prohibit the unscrupulous trade in tiger ➡️ https://tigerhandel.vier-pfoten.at/
The European Commission should actually be paying us to do the job of being EU inspectors. But desperation is not in our vocabulary, so we work independently. We have been doing this blog since the first day (15/7) of the shipment from Romania, and only with the modest resources that we have available.
It is illegal and ethically unacceptable for a ship with 70,000 live sheep to be at sea since 15 July.
Primarily the biggest disgrace was that no one was able to forbid the ship to depart in the first place.
Commissioner Andriukaitis (below) has failed.
EU countries, as member states, should be forced (policed) to comply with EU animal transport regulations. EU Regulations (1/20005) stipulate that animals can be transported in heat only as long as the temperature in the vehicles does not exceed 30 ° C (with 5 ° C tolerance upwards).
This is stipulated by the Regulation for animal transports over 8 hours journey time.
The ‘Al Shuwaikh’ is on the sea since July 15 with 70,000 Romanian sheep.
It has previously docked in Jeddah; and today (29/7) in Jebel Ali which is located in United Arab Emirates.
How many animals are still being carried ? – are they all offloaded at previous ports or are some still aboard and alive ?, what has become of the bodies of those who have died painfully in the past?
Should we wait until they are sighted by tourists and share the beach of Tenerife?
Is not it to be feared that half of the sheep are already dead when they drive around the sea for two full weeks at a temperature of over 40 degrees?
And is not it shameful that none of our highly paid EU Commissioners are worried, how are the sheep going to be disposed of?
Disrespect! Not only towards animals, but also towards the environment, against the law, which is designed by the EU itself to keep everything correct and in check !!.
We at WAV / SAV reported about it.
We were among the 70,000 living beings in this way, that was the least we could do for them, we could not do anything else.
Now we are talking with other animal organisations to approach future campaigns against actions such as this.
In the future, we will often take to the streets.
We are fed up with corruption, indifference, the cheating of people and animals by non-compliant governments and EU oligarchs.
We are many who want to abolish mass animal husbandry and torturous animal transports.
And we will fight hard and consistent for our Animal Companions.
With our latest release of four orangutans in the Kehje Sewen Forest, the number of rehabilitated orangutans released since renewed efforts started in 2012 is up to 400 !
In our rehabilitation centres, orangutans learn through the guidance of our surrogate mothers, but they can also learn from each other. Rachel shows how!
PETITION TARGET: Director of NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement Jim Landon
Florida wildlife officials discovered a fatally wounded bottlenose dolphin along the coast of Upper Captiva Island in Lee County, reports the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
“There was a wound penetrating from above and in front of the right eye, extending almost 6 inches toward the top and back of the head. The wound ended inside the head at the top of the skull and had evidence of hemorrhaging, indicating wounds consistent with being impaled prior to death,” the NOAA stated.
The necropsy revealed the dolphin was likely “begging” for food when gruesomely stabbed by a “spear-like object.”
“People can help prevent future harm to wild dolphins by not feeding or attempting to feed them. Not only is it illegal, dolphins fed by people learn to associate people, boats, and fishing gear with food, which puts dolphins and people in harmful situations,” the NOAA informed.
“Harassing, harming and killing wild dolphins is also illegal,” the Miami Herald warned.
Sign this petition to urge NOAA Director Jim Landon to use all available resources to investigate this horrific crime against protected wildlife, so the perpetrator can be identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Anyone with information about this case is urged to call the NOAA Enforcement Hotline as soon as possible at 1-800-853-1964.
There is a $38,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
The company — part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group — plans to initiate the changes as soon as possible, with a deadline of July 31st.
“We have now decided the time is right to discontinue offering attractions featuring close encounters with captive whales and dolphins,” said Joe Thompson, managing director of Virgin Holidays. “We will instead focus our efforts on encouraging customers to see these creatures in the wild. We will also continue our efforts to support the development of sanctuaries for whales and dolphins currently in captivity.”
Virgin Holidays has donated $100,000 to the National Aquarium in Baltimore for their project, which aims to relocate their captive dolphins to a purpose-built sanctuary, set to open in 2021.
“We want to actively support this direction by encouraging more responsible wild watching, which puts animal welfare at the heart of things, meaning our customers get to experience these amazing animals with peace of mind and future generations can enjoy these wonderful experiences too,” said Thompson.
Virgin joins many other travel providers around the world who refuse to support animal-related attractions, such as TripAdvisor and Thomas Cook.
Since 1977, 70 orcas have been born in captivity; 37 of them are now dead, and none have survived for longer than 30 years. The average lifespan of a wild orca is 50-80 years.
According to National Geographic, there are 58 orcas in captivity on the planet; a third of these are held in the United States. These incredible animals live in social groups and are exceptionally intelligent and complex individuals, who cannot thrive when taken from their natural environment.
“It’s basic biology,” says mammal scientist Naomi Rose from the Animal Welfare Institute. “A captive-born orca that has never lived in the ocean still has the same innate drives. If you have evolved to move great distances to look for food and mates then you are adapted to that type of movement, whether you’re a polar bear or an elephant or an orca. Not one marine mammal is adapted to thrive in the world we’ve made for them in a concrete box.”
We applaud Virgin Holidays for taking a stand against animal cruelty and putting their money where their mouth is by supporting humane alternatives to marine animal attractions.
What incredible news that we were proud to be part of. Indigenous rights of tribes upheld; the mighty Amazon saved from destruction – Oxygen wins !! – Mark
This marks a game-changing victory for the Amazon and a historic precedent for indigenous rights.
The impact here is monumental. With last week’s court ruling, the Ecuadorian government’s attempt to sell 500,000 acres of ancestral Waorani forest to oil companies is indefinitely BLOCKED.
But now is not the time to rest on our laurels, we have to keep the momentum going. The verdict is final but now the Waorani need to make sure the judgment is enforced. Ecuador’s Executive Branch has vowed to continue drilling in the Amazon “no matter what” to pay off mounting debts, so it’s up to all of us to keep up the pressure and turn the verdict into action.
Help us grow this movement by sharing this card and inviting your friends to join the fight!
This victory also sets a major legal precedent for the seven other indigenous nations whose 7 million acres of rainforest homelands are STILL ON THE AUCTION BLOCK.
Opportunities to amplify impact at this scale don’t come around all that often. Join us in backing the Amazon’s oldest guardians to protect their way of life, their forest and our shared climate.
For indigenous rights, the Amazon and our planet,
The Waorani and Amazon Frontlines Team
“We called on the world to support us and they did.
We told them the government wasn’t listening to us, and hundreds of thousands of people made our voices heard.
Thank you to all our friends around the world for joining our fight.”
German Development Minister Gerd Müller returns to Germany on Sunday after a week’s state visit to Brazil and complains that the rainforest is being cut down!!
Clearcutting: According to the Brazilian space research institute INPE alone in June 2019, 920 square kilometers of Amazon rainforest were destroyed. This is an increase of 88 percent over June 2018
His mission was to further develop the cooperation projects, in particular for the protection of the rainforest, the indigenous population and the Amazon Fund.
He says in the media: “I expect more engagement in the Amazon (!!!)
Why does he say it in the media and not his colleague, Ministerand lobbyist of Agriculture,Julia Klöckner?
It is well known that Germany not only supplies Brazil with dangerous pesticides, which are banned even in the EU, but is also responsible for cutting down the Amazon in Brazil.
Germany is not only one of the largest milk producers, but also one of the largest meat producers in the world. Subsidized with tax money!
Germany produces 8 million tons of meatevery year! In order to be able to produce that amount of meat at all, it needs food for the animals.
Germany imports most of the soya from Latin America. Incidentally, the most important supplier of beef to the EU is Argentina. To be able to produce this amount of soy, forests are cleared and burned. An extraordinary ecosystem with a high biodiversity disappears.
Few people are aware that an invisible bond of destruction is moving from European mass animal farms to the forests of South America. There huge soy plantations destroy the native fauna and flora. It is an environmental crime that often forests are cut down for cultivation, the soil is leached out and water is polluted.
In 2016, this was about 2.9 million tonnes of soy and soy products.
This soya is used by food and meat processors and is used for the rearing of chickens, pigs and cattle or for the production of eggs and dairy products, which are sold in many German supermarkets and restaurants.
So if the topic of Amazon, climate change or CO2 is discussed, why is the issue of factory farming not mentioned? Animal products are associated with high greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and inefficient land use!
Livestock for meat, eggs and dairy products has high CO2 emissionsand produces 15% of the world’s greenhouse gas. That’s more than all the cars, planes and other means of transport in the world. A person who eats plant-based foods 1 day a week for 1 year can lower their CO2 emissions by 234 kg per year (estimated based on the carbon footprint of various foods).
Please calculate this now, if you consider that Germany produces 8 million tons of meat per year and about 33 million tons of milk!
The agricultural lobby is powerful, that means. And it is subsidized in Germany with tax money, which then for education, care and so on. is not available. From the EU, the German agricultural lobby receives about 6 billion Euros and these are causing severe damage in other countries. On average, every EU citizen pays 32 cents a day for the EU criminal agricultural policy.
It is estimated that over 30 million tonnes of genetically modified feed are imported into Europe each year to feed pigs, poultry, dairy and beef cattle and farmed fish.
Much of the soybean and corn used for this purpose is grown in South America, including Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.
Cheap meat, milk and eggs can only be produced with cheap soybeans, which, however, cost the countries of origin expensive:Deforested rainforests, destroyed environment, poisoning of humans and animals are the result.
This is not agriculture. This is a murder factory in the field.
This documentary explores the effects of soybean cultivation in South America and shows people in South America and Europe alternatives to the devastating vicious circle. The Video is in English and Spanish with German subtitles.
Only incompetent and irresponsible politicians have Germany.
We are dealing with a ruling clique, with corrupt oligarchs who are at least interested in the rights of animals and the rescue of the climate.
Everywhere scandals and manure stands in slaughterhouses we read lately.
And instead of finally abolishing factory farming or at least punishing criminal slaughterhouse operators, the slaughterhouse’s girlfriend, Agriculture Minister Klöckner, wants stricter penalties for activists exposing these crimes.
No more subsidies for the meat.
Meat consumption must be private, as well as smoking.
This state-subsidized factory farming must cost as much as the damage it does.
I consider it a political prostitution to subsidize meat.
