What sort of madness is this ?

Imagine that you are only a few days old.
You are taken from your mother and thrown into a freezing ice bath, until you pass out.
You wake up on a stainless steel table, with all of your limbs pinned down, as your flesh is sliced open with a scalpel.
When the work is done, you are left to writhe in pain.
If you die, it doesn’t matter.

kanada-
How would you feel if this was your miserable life?
It’s the heartbreaking reality for many of the animals who cross paths with a “scientist” called Tania Roth …

Tania Rothpg

For 18 years, this cruel scientist has subjected animals to torture for the sake of her experiments, and she is funded by the U.S. federal government!
She “has a long and fiendish history of tormenting and killing mice and rats and calling it science, and she has conducted a new round of experiments in which she slashed the spines of day-old baby rats.

Behavioral tests were performed on some of the pups nine days later. Afterward, all the pups were killed and their spines were removed.
Before surgery, the babies were put into a freezing ice bath until they passed out, a painful process called hypothermia that Roth used instead of gas anesthesia. Her publication noted that after surgery, she administered just one dose of pain medication.

roth mit mäuser

There was no indication of any further pain relief.

“The point of Roth’s experiments is supposedly to examine changes in gene expressions in rats after their spinal cords are cut. But much like the full catalog of Roth’s gruesome work, it’s scientifically dubious, at best,” according to PETA.
But that’s just on notch her belt …

“Since 2000, Roth – now at the University of Delaware – has been abusing rats in psychologically distressing and painful experiments.
“Some of her twisted methods include forcing alcohol down the throats of newborns, stuffing pregnant rats into tiny tubes and blasting them with strobe lights, and shocking the feet of rats to terrify them”.

“The tormented rats become fearful, anxious, and depressed – but because of significant biological differences between species, the results of her experiments are irrelevant to human health,” said PETA.

Tania-Roth
They continued on to say that her list of violence against animals “includes injecting them with opioids, tricking baby rats into believing that they’re in danger by smearing their enclosure with fox urine odor, electrocuting them, and taking them away from their mothers and placing them with traumatized adult rats incapable of taking care of them.
“In another bizarre experiment, she put rats inside a small plexiglass enclosure and allowed a cat to lick food off it.”

Mouse-or-Rat-Restraint-Tube

The image above, taken from an article on rodent handling and restraint techniques written by University of Notre Dame staff, depicts a restraint tube similar to the ones used by Roth in her experiment.

When Roth says rats are best suited for her experiments, what she really means is that they are cheap and disposable. She has repeatedly shown a lack of regard for sentient life and no qualms about killing large numbers of rats. When her lab became contaminated with smoke from a fire, she had all 75 rats living in it killed just because she could no longer use them.

What sort of madness is this ?

“More than half of Americans oppose the use of animals in scientific research, according to a 2014 Pew survey,” reported Delaware Online.
And with good reason.
We all value science … but not at the expense of unforgivable acts of cruelty to animals.
The path forward is clear.
It’s time for this wicked “scientist”, Tania Roth, to be fired.
That’s why we’re called on University of Delaware’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee to do the right thing.

According to Delaware Online, they review protocols for animal use and care, and are authorized to suspend or withhold approval to research activities that violate federal standards.

They can also recommend that UD’s administration fire Tania Roth, so that she can never needless harm animals again. We’ll be contacted administration as well, to make sure they get this vital message.
Don’t you want to stop the cruel, heartless practice of cutting the spines out of babies, along with all the other horrific things she has done?
Then add your name to demand that University of Delaware’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, along with university administration, take action to ensure that Tania Roth is terminated in the fastest possible way!

Federally, Canada has the weakest laws in the western world for protecting animals used in research. Unlike in other countries, here are no federal laws, no inspectors, no public inspection reports, and no way for the public to effectively oversee the secretive activities of animal researchers.

Instead, there are only voluntary guidelines created and overseen by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), a non-profit with no legal authority. The CCAC can recommend that the federal granting agencies withdraw research funding from a non-compliant institution.

Add your name if you want to end her career, ASAP!

My comment: Quotation of the psychopath Tanja Roth from the website of university…

“We are interested in understanding how environmental factors, such as parenting behavior and social stress, can influence the development of behavior and psychiatric disorders. Our primary interests are centered on identifying epigenetic changes (i.e. DNA methylation) associated with early-life caregiving experiences, particularly maltreatment, and understanding their causal role in behavioral outcome.

All of these psychopaths are funded by our tax dollars. To live out their perverse tendencies towards animals.
It’s useless, non productive, repetitive torture that gives science a bad name and ads nothing whatever of value to the sum of human knowledge when a psychopath massacred animals to find out wich parental behavior causes mental disorders!!!

“There are no data that show you reach a point where you can’t change anything,” she said.

You are right Tania! so we will soon reach the point that your laboratory will shut down.

My best regards to all, Venus

An experimenter becomes an animal rights activist

american-flag-120402148

Dr. Don Barnes experimented with animals at School for Aerospace Medicine for 13-14 years.
When he was an experimenter, they conditioned him AGAINST applying ethics to animals who weren’t human.
But Dr. Don Barnes knew that using animals as laboratory equipment was wrong.
“We use the wrong models for our experiments,” he says.
He fundamentally changed his life and became an animal rights activist.

Laboratories of the National Institutes of Health: Crime in accord

american-flag-120402148

Mice baked to death after a heating system failure, or left to die from hunger and thirst when researchers forgot to put food or water in their cages for a week — and nobody noticed.

Primates kept in a room where the lights were on 24-hours-a-day for nearly five months because a facility manager was said to be overworked.

A vet who failed to provide any care to a female owl monkey used for breeding after she became seriously ill and lost a fifth of her bodyweight, eventually succumbing to heart failure, fluid in the chest and abdominal hemorrhage.

AFP / RAUL ARBOLEDA Owl monkeys at a zoo in Columbia; documents from a US government lab show a vet failed to provide care to a seriously ill female owl monkey kept for breeding purposes

These are among a litany of animal welfare failures that took place across a 22-month period from January 2018 to October 2019 at the laboratories of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the taxpayer-funded steward of medical and behavioral research of the United States.

A total of 31 internally reported incidents have come to light thanks to a freedom of information request made by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and shared exclusively with AFP Agence France-Presse (France Media Agency).

They took place at a variety of centers performing research in areas including diabetes, child health, mental health and more — mostly out of Bethesda, Maryland but some at a facility in Hamilton, Montana.

In a statement, the NIH said it took all “noncompliance” incidents seriously and all of them had been thoroughly investigated by its Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), while changes to procedures had been made as a result.

But animal rights groups, including those that, unlike PETA, are not ideologically opposed to all animal testing, blasted the violations as egregious.

“The laws and regulations exist to minimize animal suffering, pain, stress, and when even those minimal standards are not being addressed or not being followed, then you have significant suffering,” said Eric Kleiman, a researcher at the Animal Welfare Institute.

“Training, veterinary care, food, water: this is the most basic of basics. If you can’t do this kind of thing right you have no business doing anything with animals, it’s as simple as that,” he added, calling the findings “shocking.”

-Repeated failures –

AFP / Eric BARADAT A total of 31 internally reported incidents have come to light thanks to a freedom of information request made by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and shared exclusively with AFP

From historic breakthroughs like the discovery of insulin through experiments on dogs, to the development last year of an Ebola treatment via work on genetically-modified mice, and cutting-edge cancer therapies, many scientists believe animal research is crucial to medical progress.

But the testing is supposed to take place under strict laws and policies spelling out its conditions, including the size of cages, room temperatures and the animals’ social needs, as well as vet visits and the need for hygienic surgery and post-operative care.

Federal research facilities are subject to the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, which in turns mandates compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, a landmark law signed by former president Lyndon Johnson 1966.

Unlike labs in universities and private facilities, they are not subject to site inspections by the US Department of Agriculture and are meant to regulate themselves.

“Yet the repeated violations of policy show that this system is inherently flawed”, said Alka Chandna, PETA’s vice president of laboratory investigations cases.

On no fewer than five occasions, mice starved or dehydrated to death because employees forgot to give them food or water. “The problem was not noted during the daily health checks,” said one report from June 2018.

– ‘What went right?’ –

AFP/File / Anthony WALLACE An experimenter at a US government laboratory injected 18 zebrafish with a salt solution, even though this procedure had not been approved; 11 died and seven were euthanized

Other examples spoke to serial incompetence, said Chandna, including one where a dog sustained skin burns from an electric blanket used because the procedure room was too cold, but staff failed to monitor its use.On another occasion, 13 mice baked to death after a heating system failure left them in 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) overnight.

In July 2018, an experimenter injected 15 zebrafish with a salt solution, even though this procedure had not been approved. Four of the zebrafish died immediately.

Three weeks later, the procedure was repeated in 18 fish — even though the protocol had still not been approved. Eleven of these fish were euthanized and seven were found dead.

Few incidents led to serious repercussions: A facility manager who allowed primates to remain in a room with the lights on for five months was “counseled” and directed to monitor the lights daily, a report said in March 2018.

The vet who failed to attend to the owl monkey after having been notified by a vet technician that the animal was very sick was replaced, but it was not clear if they were fired or re-assigned.

Commenting on multiple surgeries that took place without regard to aseptic procedure or post-operative care — including on a primate — Kleiman said the question was not so much what had gone wrong as “what went right?”

-Small percentage? –

AFP/File / Saul LOEB Activists with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) demonstrate during a protest against the US military treatment of animals in Washington, DC in 2012

Animal testing has broad backing from the scientific community even as some advocate for a transition to other forms of research, including computer modeling and test tube based studies in line with the so-called three R’s: Replacement, Reduction and Refinement.

Paula Clifford, the executive director of Americans for Medical Progress that campaigns for animal research, said it was critical to place the new revelations in context.

“Given the size of the NIH and the very large number of animals it cares for, these incidents are actually quite rare and involve a very small percentage of the tens of thousands of animals involved in health research,” she said.

In its statement to AFP, the NIH said: “The incidents you have cited were thoroughly investigated by OLAW. The NIH intramural facilities have implemented numerous changes to prevent a recurrence.”

“There are cases where something (!!!) goes wrong (as in any enterprise) but it is identified, corrected, and evaluated by OLAW to ensure that the correction is appropriate for the problem,” it added.

And I mean...It’s always the same: crime and torture take place in laboratories around the world with tolerance from the state and veterinarians. And financed with tax money.

As soon as someone detects it, the explanation comes: “It can happen that “something” goes wrong, it never comes again, we have taken measures”!!
And with “something” the laboratory actors mean living beings who are tortured, massacred, murdered.
If they weren’t exposed, these crimes would still go on with “something” wrong.

PETA and AFP should find the addresses and names of those responsible and post them on Facebook!  that is possible and has even been practiced, namely: by Camille Marino, who published research material from the University of Florida on social media in 2012.

All taxpayers have the right to know who their money is going to.
And then … let’s see if such crimes happen again.

Sabra Hummus parent company ends animal testing

Hummus does not form a separate category in the vegan food pyramid, but it is hard to imagine everyday life for every gourmet. Unfortunately, our beloved dip has had a cruel connection to animal abuse.

The Strauss Group is the second largest food and beverage company in Israel and the parent company of the Sabra Hummus brand, which is also popular in Germany.
After discussions with PETA USA, the Strauss Group has now published a new company policy that experiments on animals are now a thing of the past.

israel-flagge-wjpg

Hummus fans can therefore be happy!!
The purchase of Sabra-Hummus will no longer help to starve, poison and kill animals.

In the past, experimenters funded by the Strauss Group at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem had conducted various animal experiments.
Mice were fed a low-fat, high-fat or ketogenic diet and had to starve for 12 hours at the end of the trial before being killed and dissected.
Some animals starved the experimenters 20 hours a day for eight weeks.

Maus mit verstecktem Kopf_o

Instead of animal experiments, animal-free methods could also have been used for the desired findings, and studies with volunteers also make sense here. The tests were only about common, non-toxic food ingredients – various studies carried out in this way have already been published.

PETA appeals to all food and beverage manufacturers who still rely on cruel, archaic animal experiments to follow the pioneering example of the Strauss Group. There are far better methods out there than these cruel practices.

With the decision against animal testing, the Strauss Group is now part of a growing list of dozens of large food companies that have also ended the horror in the laboratory in cooperation with PETA USA.

PETA USA contacted many of these companies because documents showed that animals were starved, poisoned, mistreated and killed. In such cruel experiments, thousands of animals have suffered and died over the decades. And all that so that companies could advertise with certain marketing terms. The products for which animal experiments were made ranged from pasta and chocolate bars to breakfast cereal or alcohol.

https://www.peta.de/erfolg-sabra-hummus-tierversuche

Maus-Tierversuch-02-c-PETA-USA_680

And I mean … The laboratory industry has not let animal testing out in any field. And in the case of foodstuffs in particular, it should be taken for granted that the results are not transferable.

Aspirin was developed 100 years ago, and if it were tested on animals today, it would fail. Because it causes embryonic damage in dogs, cats, monkeys, mice and rats.
The penicillin that saved humanity would not get approval even after animal experiments today, because it is deadly for guinea pigs and other nail animals.

Animal experiments feign security that does not exist.

Most experimenters still adhere to the stupid teaching of the French philosopher René Descartes (1596-1650), who became known with the motto “cogito ergo sum” = I think therefore I am.
He claimed that animals are senseless and insensitive reflex automatons. He explained cries of pain from animals with mechanical processes like the squeaking of a machine.

Today, we know that there is no direct relationship between animal testing and saving a human being.
Animal experiments are false science and senseless cruelty.

The “skull drill” Logothetis leaves Germany

banane rep deutschlandpg

SOKO animal protection

Animal experimenter Logothetis, Director at the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen for biological cybernetics, flees to a country without press freedom and without animal protection law, to China.

Logothetis

In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, which likes to print propaganda from the animal experiments lobby, a fan complains about the loss of the “skull drill” Logothetis. One would have misrepresented his animal experiments …

MPI Affe 3Image: SOKO Tierschutz

So it continues to tinker with the victim myth. So let’s get to the facts.

1) The experiments were carried out illegally under Logothetis, because the voluntary freedom of the animals according to the application and approval was not given, but the experiments were forced through violence, anesthesia or liquid deprivation.

MPI Affe. gefüttertjpg

2) In the Logothetis laboratory, the monkeys suffered the most severe side effects, such as meningitis, strokes and paralysis, among other things due to sluggish surgical methods and poor hygiene.

foto-affe-labor_1Image: SOKO Tierschutz

3) In the Logothetis laboratory, dying, sick monkey Stella was carried out cruel attempts to the end despite the stroke and hemiplegia, even though the animal should have been euthanized. Stella was not an isolated case.

Stella MPIImage: SOKO Tierschutz

4) In the laboratory, an intern without any knowledge was allowed to carry out serious animal tests on rats which were fatal due to the lack of practice.https: //youtu.be/40j3ULTjOs0 ((unfortunately in German!!)

Affe MPI SOKOpg

We have reported about this several times in the past: 1) https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2019/01/14/the-animal-tormentor-nikos-logothetis-is-allowed-to-test-animals-again/

2) https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2018/12/22/gernany-monkey-process-cancelled-how-works-the-labormafia/

5) There was a severe outbreak of disease (TBC) in the Logothetis laboratory and potentially dangerous diseases for humans, including multi-resistant germs. However, hygiene was poor and was not taken seriously.

6) These bad practices have a long tradition. A notification by an authority was pending against the institute under Logothetis in the period 2010-2012.
This ad was due to poor practice, poor knowledge – for example in surgical sutures that had bad consequences for an animal.

Blutverschmierter Affe MPIjpg

The only answer to these facts came in the form of a dirt campaign by animal experiment fans.
Instead of facts and arguments, there were lies, murder and even a crime. A senior MPI employee was convicted of pretending to be a criminal offense. She had claimed to have been attacked by animal rights activists (!!!)

It is logical that Logothetis, after retiring and after the majority of German researchers rightly refused to support him, seeks refuge in a country without animal welfare law, criticism and free media.
Because there he can drill monkey heads free and continue his bad research without obstacles.
He does it like other industries that go to China to exploit people uninhibitedly or to poison the environment. In this case with animals only.

But he shouldn’t be wrong!
Animal torture cannot hide in China either.
And Logothetis should not be surprised if the determined Chinese want to see success, and will not be fed off with almost nothing for decades, like the Germans with their taxpayer millions.
Some innovative young researchers in China will shake their heads in disbelief at what has been bought from Germany.

My comment: Logothetis:  “My research was destroyed with strong effects on my health. !! I would have liked to have stayed in Germany, but given the circumstances, it is no longer possible for me to continue my work in Tübingen.

We can breathe a sigh of relief and just say: One less asshole in Germany’s laboratory industry!

As far as I know, no more monkey trials will take place at the MPI in Tübingen in the future.

A cruel mouse story – everyday reality

What happened to Martin isn’t just a story — it’s reality. All they wanted was to stay together 💔

Experimenters tortured them and made them watch each other suffer 😔

We have been curing cancer in mice for decades, but it just doesn’t work in humans”.

“The reason I’m against animal testing is that they don’t work, they have no scientific value.
The results of animal research cannot be extrapolated from humans, and every good scientist knows that.
Since animal testing is worthless and leads to quackery in medicine and I have to be against quackery, I am against animal testing, as a scientist”.
Prof. Dr. Robert S. Mendelsohn, Professor of Preventive Medicine in University of Illinois (Chicago)

Affe, angebunden im Labortisch

But we know it: animal experiments and propaganda campaigns for animal experiments are carried out with public funds.
Even we, the opponents of animal experiments, unwittingly finance this crime with our taxes.
State and industrial support provides the animal experimentation lobby with enormous financial, poolitical and media-effective funds.
The population becomes stupid due to the permanent systematic agitation.

The ethical and scientific arguments of the animal experiment opponents have almost no chance against this overpowering lobby. It’s about a lot of money, it’s about billions in the pharmaceutical industry and in university research laboratories, and nobody voluntarily separates from that.
This is also the reason why the majority of the animal test results are not published, but disappear in the duplicate.

No people who still practice these cruel witch trials have the right to call themselves a cultural people.

England: Victory – King’s College London has become the first university to declare an end to the cruel forced swim test.

England

Big result ! – well done people, your voices and protests are being heard – WAV.

We have wonderful news to share with you!

King’s College London has become the first university to declare an end to the cruel forced swim test, in which mice and other small animals are subjected to a terrifying near-drowning experience.

This news comes after PETA provided King’s with evidence that use of the test has repeatedly wasted animals’ lives, public funds, and research hours – all of which screams bad science.

King’s joins Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer, AbbVie, Roche, AstraZeneca, and other top pharmaceutical companies in banning the forced swim test after talks with PETA or our affiliates.

But pharma giant Eli Lilly is refusing to commit to banning these cruel experiments. Please tell the company that nearly drowning small animals has no place in drug development:

Urge Pharmaceutical Giant Eli Lilly to Ban the Near-Drowning of Animals

The “forced swim test” is a widely used experiment that’s as cruel as it is worthless.

Experimenters put mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, or gerbils in inescapable containers filled with water. The panicked animals try to escape by attempting to climb up the sides of the beakers or even by diving underwater in search of an exit. They paddle furiously, desperately trying to keep their heads above water. Eventually, they’ll start to float.

Some pharmaceutical companies have used the test when developing treatments for depression, even though it has been shown that it doesn’t accurately predict whether a drug will work as a human antidepressant.

The forced swim test is bad science. It does nothing more than terrify animals and delay the development of effective new treatments for depression that are so desperately needed. After discussions with PETA US, AstraZeneca, Novo Nordisk, AbbVie and Johnson & Johnson announced that they’ll no longer conduct or fund this cruel test. Roche also stated it has discontinued its use of forced swim tests after hearing from PETA US, PETA Switzerland, and PETA Germany.

Take Action Now!

Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly are refusing to commit to banning it. Tell them what you think about that by taking action below.

USA: CALIFORNIA BECOMES THE FIRST STATE IN THE US TO BAN ANIMAL COSMETICS TESTING – and England – Dolma Cruelty Free Perfumes.

CALIFORNIA BECOMES THE FIRST STATE IN THE US TO BAN ANIMAL COSMETICS TESTING

A new law, designed to end the needless suffering animals endure during cosmetics testing, went into effect on January 1, 2020, helping ensure the importation and sale of California’s cosmetics are cruelty-free.
Former Gov. Jerry Brown enacted the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act back in 2018. It bans California-based manufacturers from importing or selling beauty products that have been tested on, or contain ingredients previously tested on, animals. This is the first such law in the United States.
Companies breaking the new law will be fined $5,000 with an extra $1,000 charge for each subsequent day the violation continues.
“We are proud to have led the effort to pass this monumental law,” said one of the sponsors on the bill, founder and president of Social Compassion in Legislation Judie Mancuso. “Animal testing is not needed to prove the safety of cosmetics and personal hygiene products, and this new law codifies that scientific fact. We must modernize and get rid of these antiquated protocols and stop torturing poor innocent animals. Once again, our great state of California is a leader on such important, smart and compassionate animal rights issues.”
A number of other animal protection measures are also set to come into effect in California this year, including three bills signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newson in 2019, which prohibit the use of wild animals in circus performances, ban fur trapping and the sale of fur products, and reintroduce a ban on importing or selling products crafted from crocodiles and alligators.

“I like to think I made a difference”!

A multi-millionaire in Michigan is offering to donate money to Wayne State University – but the money comes with a big ask. The donor is asking the university to end all testing on animals.

american-flag-120402148

Meanwhile, philanthropist Thomas Mackey has already made a difference in the lives of thousands of animals through his donations to animal shelters across metro Detroit.

Tom made his money over 52 years as an investment banker. He loved his work but animals stole his heart at a young age. He’s already donated many millions to help animals and his latest proposal keeps with the theme.

In a handwritten letter to Wayne State University, Tom is offering to donate $1 million to a scholarship program for Detroit kids. The caveat – in exchange he’s asking Wayne State end its animal testing, including cardiovascular research still being done on dogs.

“If people knew that their tax money that they pay is going to the government and the government, both state and federal, is paying Wayne State to torture dogs there would be a lot more outcry,” he says.

The university tests mostly on mice, but since 1991 they’ve done heart failure research on dogs.

A group that works to end animal research, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, says the dogs undergo multiple surgeries and have as many as nine devices implanted in their bodies with wires coming out of their skin. Then they’re run on treadmills to gauge how their bodies react. The group reports dogs typically die after five months.

michigan universität-campus-121919

Wayne State said in a statement to FOX 2 they use “the highest level of care for animals used in research (!!!)” And animal research plays a vital role in virtually every major medical advancement in the last century.

“Anybody that has seen a dog in pain or in discomfort knows that they’re hurting,” Tom says.

As far as Tom’s offer, the university says “Wayne State does not accept gifts that stipulate changes to or that contradict, institutional policies or its mission.”

Tierversuche Hunden

Tom says he will keep pressing on. But he’s already left a legacy, although he doesn’t like that word.

He’s donated money for a new, upgraded facility at the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society in Harper Woods, aptly named Thomas A. Mackey Animal Adoption Center.

“There are no words to convey what he’s done for us, there’s just no words,” says Corinne Martin, the facility’s executive director.

And, you’ll start to see a trend here – Tom also donated funds to the Michigan Humane Society and has been the backbone behind a new state-of-the-art facility in Detroit, also aptly named the Mackey Center for Animal Care.

“I can probably make a shorter list of what he hasn’t had a hand in, than what he has,” says president and CEO of MHS, Matt Pepper. “We didn’t have to force him but we really had pry to get him to let us put his name on the building. He doesn’t do this for recognition.”

michigan unipgA photo of Michigan Humane Society’s Mackey Center for Animal Care in Detroit, Mich.

“Tom’s philosophy is that he’s going to do everything he wants to while he’s on this earth and not after he’s gone,” Martin says.

“There is no limit to the number of the lives he’s saved; I couldn’t put a number on it. It’s countless,” Pepper says.

Tom knows he’s is in his twilight but while he’s here, it’s all about the animals.

“I like to think I made a difference, a little tiny difference,” he says.

Tom isn’t the only one that wants to end animal testing. There is currently a bill moving through Lansing right now that would stop animal testing at public universities that causes the animal any harm.

https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/philanthropists-1m-scholarship-donation-asks-wayne-state-university-end-animal-testing

My comment: So … Wayne State University sees Thomas Mackey’s offer as an immoral offer!!
“Wayne State does not accept gifts that stipulate changes to or that contradict, institutional policies or its mission.”

What the university calls a “mission” is no different than collecting 204 million dollars a year in grants to secure its own status and to safeguard the careers of its employees through publications on “research” work in renowned journals.

The $ 1 million offer offends the researchers’ “work ethic”, but $ 204 million annual budget to torture animals senselessly is officially approved for “research work”!!

This is the language of professional animal torturers.

We see in the offer from Thomas Mackey an excellent example of how effective money can be for animals if it is invested correctly.

We thank him very much for that.
Not every multi millionaire is a capitalist asshole!

Pig-Monkey Chimeras Have Been Brought to Term For The First Time

MICHELLE STARR

9 DEC 2019

Pigs engineered to have a small amount of monkey cells have been brought to full term and were even born alive, surviving for a few days after birth. Although the piglets died, it is claimed the experiment – performed in China – marks a major milestone for the future of lab-grown organs.

“This is the first report of full-term pig-monkey chimeras,” Tang Hai of the State Key Laboratory of Stem Cell and Reproductive Biology in Beijing told New Scientist.

The research is part of an ongoing effort to develop animals – whether they are sheep or pigs – that can grow human organs we could then harvest for transplants, a process called xenogeneic organogenesis.

Research has been done on both pig and sheep embryos with transplanted human stem cells; in both cases, the embryos continued to develop until the experiment was deliberately terminated.

That’s because, due to ethical concerns, these chimeras – organisms that incorporate the genetic material of another species – cannot be cultivated or studied in the later stages of embryonic development. Some scientists worry that some of the human stem cells could end up in other parts of the animal or even in its brain, with unintended consequences.

For that reason, in this experiment the team used stem cells from crab-eating macaques (Macaca fascicularis). These were imbued with fluorescent proteins so that they would glow under fluorescent light, and derived to produce fluorescing embryonic cells.

These cells were then injected into over 4,000 five-day-old pig embryos fertilised using IVF; the modified pig embryos were subsequently implanted into sows.

This fiddly and painstaking work produced just 10 piglets that made it to full term and were born alive. And only two of these were chimeric, with between one in 1,000 and one in 10,000 functional monkey cells to pig cells.

The monkey cells had migrated to the heart, liver, lungs, spleen and skin of the piglet hosts, but were not found in other organs, such as testes and ovaries, due to the low rate of chimerism, the researchers said.

Sadly, before a week was out, the piglets died – not just the two chimeras, but the other eight normal piglets, too. Because all the pigs died, Hai told New Scientist, the cause of death likely had less to do with chimerism, and more to do with IVF – a procedure that is notoriously tricky in pigs.

The low chimerism rate is also somewhat discouraging. However, the researchers remain optimistic. Although the birth rate was low, and the pigs didn’t survive, the team now has a wealth of data they can apply to future experiments.

The scientists are planning to try again, increasing the chimeric cell ratio. And they believe their data may help other scientists working in the field.

“Here, we have used monkey cells to explore the potential of reconstructing chimeric human organs in a large animal model,” they wrote in their paper.

“We believe this work will facilitate the development of xenogeneic organogenesis by providing a better understanding of the processes of xenogeneic recognition, fate determination, and the proliferation and differentiation of primate stem cells during porcine development.

“The findings could pave the way toward overcoming the obstacles in the re-engineering of heterogeneous organs and achieve the ultimate goal of human organ reconstruction in a large animal.”

The research has been published in Protein & Cell.

Here in the UK, a different approach is being used which eliminates the use of growing organs from one species and then attempting to transplant them into another – which could be high risk.  It is an opt out system that will work on the policy that anyone who dies can have their organs taken for donation unless they decide to go for the ‘opt out’ option which they can take if they do not wish to donate.

A new opt-out system for organ donation will be in place by 2020 in England, if Parliament approves “Max’s Law”.

Under the plans detailed by ministers, adults will be presumed to be organ donors unless they have specifically recorded their decision not to be.

The government said it would save up to 700 lives each year.

In the UK in 2017, 411 people died before the right donor was found, and more than 5,000 people are currently on the waiting list in England.

A similar opt-out system has been in place in Wales since 2015. Scotland plans to introduce a similar scheme and Northern Ireland has also expressed an interest.
