Nigeria:  Undercover investigation by UK television shows that wet markets operate as normal; and that this is another Covid pandemic waiting to happen. Disturbing footage, as are all wet markets that involve live animals.

ITV News (UK) has secretly filmed in Oluwo Fish Market, a wet market just outside Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city.

‘It’s going to happen again’: Fears wet markets could lead to another deadly disease

  • Video report by ITV News Correspondent Lucy Watson

Inside the market, ITV News

Oluwo Fish Market teems with life. It is a wet market just outside Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city.

ITV News secretly filmed there – a place awash with animals – alive and dead. Scientists believe wet markets are a breeding ground for disease, a high risk environment, from where the next pandemic could emerge.

The very concept of a “wet market” means the presence of blood and bodily fluids.

It is a marketplace selling fresh meat and fish, as opposed to a “dry market” that sells durable products.

Not all wet markets sell live animals. Not all of them trade in wild and exotic animals, but some do, and some of those have been linked to outbreaks of zoonotic diseases, where an infection crosses the species barrier from animal to human. Exhibit A. Covid-19. The pandemic that allegedly originated at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, China.

Video obtained by both ITV News and the charity WildAtLife shows live crocodiles having their scales removed, pangolins being kicked and abused and dogs boiled alive.

Multiple primates were seen imprisoned in cages, the heads of others were for sale. It was difficult to watch when a baby baboon, trapped inside a birdcage, reached out to the camera grasping for freedom, as a decapitated monkey was sold next to him.

One woman reached into a brown sack and pulled out a pangolin. This species is the most trafficked animal in the world. We could buy it there for less than ten pounds.

The pangolin is a species that has been linked to the COVID-19 outbreak in China. Their scales are of high value in Asia for medicines.

The abuse of animals and the health risks for humans at this market were plain to see. It’s what the conservation group WildAtLife want to expose. Chinedu Mogbu works for them, and has rescued umpteen exotic species from there in recent months.

He said: “Nigeria doesn’t have strong laws to protect its wildlife.

“Anyone can go into the forest, take a pangolin and sell it on the street. The law enforcers are not even aware of the importance or the laws that protect these animals.”

We did notice the presence of Asian buyers at this African market.

Any illicit, international trade would undoubtedly increase the risk of spreading disease around the globe, but Nigerian officials say they are doing enough to prevent that.

Joseph Attah from the Customs Service refused to answer more than one question on the matter though.

This was all he would say: “We have been making a lot of seizures about that, we have been seizing them and we will continue to seize them anytime we see them.”

We know, that despite our allegations, the wet market in Epe continues to thrive. Scientists are concerned that such places pose an unnecessary and high risk.

“Every single animal at a wet market is likely to have an infection,” Malcolm Bennett from the University of Nottingham told me. He is Professor of Zoonotic and Emerging Diseases.

“That general concept of bringing lots of animals and people together, and doing lots of things to them in the same place is a high risk thing to do. It’s not just a biodiversity of animals, it’s a biodiversity of disease. Some of which will spread to us.“

He said unflinchingly, “It is going to happen again.”

There is a high security lab at the university where they are analysing the affects of COVID-19 on cells.

Bringing together animals and people that don’t usually mix increases the risk of new infections, so wet markets are ideal places for cross species transmission and disease amplification.

Other viruses we know of that started out as zoonotic diseases are SARS, MERS, Ebola, even HIV.

Stopping the development of such viruses is impossible, instead we need to mitigate the risks.

In many peoples’ eyes what happens at some wet markets is unhygienic, tortuous and brutal, but in African and Asian nations it isn’t simply a case of shutting them down. There are more issues at play. They have a critical role in social interaction and for different cultures. The Deputy Director of the National Zoo, Aminu Muhammad Beli, explained.

“We cannot close the wet markets because there are certain animals that have cultural attributes to certain tribal groups. We have to devise a way of sustaining the industry,” he said.

His words are perhaps difficult to stomach when you see carcasses lying in the hot sun and live animals being butchered. Regulation and surveillance must increase though, else harmful pathogens will breed.

We just can’t predict where or how destructive they will be.

Regards Mark

Comment – I watched the investigation on UK news yesterday (16/3) – and was informed that some of the UK team rescued some of the animals and released them back into the wild where they belong. Well done ITN.

Hellscape dog farms in Gimpo, South Korea

All 60 dogs are rescued!

Please click the video to watch!

But they are in terrible condition and will need extensive medical care.

CARE and You Sachun will care for them until they find forever loving homes.

Please help by donating whatever you can afford.

Thank you!

Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE) is trying to rescue dogs from two illegal dog farms in Gimpo, South Korea.

These dogs were left alone to survive on completely rotten and molded food waste that appears to be at least 10 – 20 days old. Scattered among the living dogs were the bodies of those that had already died. CARE came with another dog rescue group You Sachun but the farm owner is nowhere to be found.

CARE had received an agreement from one of the dog farms that they would relinquish their dogs yesterday, but the second farm is the one with even more dogs trying to survive in even more horrific conditions, and there is no relinquish agreement with that farm owner.

If not rescued soon, it is unknown how long these dogs can survive. This dog farm is no better than a grave for the dogs; these poor animals are so desperate they cried out when they saw the CARE rescuers, begging to be saved. It’s suspected that dogs at some government shelters, instead of being euthanized, were illegally brought here. There are all kinds of dogs here including the dogs who had vocal cord removal surgery.

Despite the request for help, the City of Gimpo and the Gyeonggi-do Special Police never showed up. CARE and You Sachun will use all means possible to save the dogs. They are asking us to file a protest with the city of Gimpo and Gyeonggi-do province to help with the removal of these dogs from this dog farm. There are about 60 dogs to be rescued and CARE and You Sachun will try to rescue all of them, provide medical care, and find homes for them.

The cost to do all of this is going to be enormous. Therefore, they need compassion and generosity from caring people like you. Please help them save these suffering dogs by donating whatever you can afford. Thank you!

South Korea: Largest Known Dog Meat Auction Facility In the Country Is Now Closed for Good – Result !

In a win for dogs suffering in S. Korea’s brutal meat trade, Nakwon Auction House the largest known dog meat auction in the country — is CLOSED FOR GOOD.

The closure follows Lady Freethinker’s undercover investigation and petition — covered by People Magazine — and local campaigning by partners Save Korean Dogs.

This victory is only possible because of YOU. Thank you for speaking out to save these dogs from slaughter, and supporting LFT’s fight against the cruel dog meat trade.

Hundreds of dogs will no longer spend their days in tiny, filthy wire cages in this house of horrors while waiting, terrified, to be sold to dog butchers.

We thank the more than 46,000 supporters who signed LFT’s petition demanding this horrifying, illegal auction be put out of business!

Undercover video released by LFT captured more than 200 terrified dogs in cramped wire cages at the Nakwon Auction House in S. Korea in Oct. 2020.

The footage sparked public outrage, a call to demolish the auction house, and evidence the local government needed to shut down the illegal sales.

The city of Namyangju announced recently that the auction house is closed, the dogs are removed, and the owner was fined heavily and warned by authorities to stop his operations or risk more fines.

This is an important victory, and we couldn’t have done it without your support! But our work is far from over. Dogs continue to die every day for the horrific dog meat trade — and we won’t stop until every dog is safe.

South Korea: Message Back from ‘Korean Dogs’ in California re ‘Bounce Back’ Issues. Try the e People Petitions First – This Will Get To Government. Read On …..

A few days ago in one post re the Korean (Meat) Dogs campaign, I said that we had tried to send e mails as per the website; but many had been returned by the administrator within a few minutes.

South Korea: 12/02/21 – Latest Newsletter; but PLEASE READ ALL the info below. Act as Detailed Please. – World Animals Voice

I said then that I would be contacting Korean Dogs in California to sound them out about this.  So I did.  Within a day I had a very nice message back from our animals friends at Korean Dogs in California.  Giny sent the following info, which I am repeating in full as I hope it will help you with your actions.

As Giny says – The e-People petition is the most effective of all the actions you can take so please try doing that today. This will never bounce back and you will ALWAYS get a response from the Korean government. www.e-People.go.kr

So I suggest that (initially), the E People petition route is probably the best way to start.

Thanks to Giny for her very rapid response to my questions; I informed her that we will continue to support their wrk and campaigning until the Korean meat dog issue is a thing of the past.

Regards Mark

Call for Action! – Stop the Dog and Cat Consumption in S. Korea! (koreandogs.org)

——————————————————————————————————-

Here is the response from Giny:

Dear Mark,

Thank you for caring about the animals in the South Korean dog and cat meat industry and contacting us.

And thank you for taking action!

Please refer to our FAQ regarding this issue: https://koreandogs.org/faq-koreandogs-org/

Q: I have sent emails to addresses given on your web-pages, but many of them ‘bounce’ or have some other message saying they cannot be delivered. Why is this?

A: There could be several reasons why your emails are returned or not delivered. Your returned email will indicate the reason for the returned email such as “Message blocked”, “The receiver denied your mail.” One suggestion that we would like to make is that you separate your personal email with the petition mailing email account. You can also set up multiple email accounts on gmail for petition email sending.

In addition, the sources from where we have collected these email addresses could be out of date, or incorrect; or may have changed since we collected this information and listed it on our website. We do try our best to keep up-to-date information, but, as you can appreciate, it is not always possible to reflect these changes.

The e-People petition is the most effective of all the actions you can take so please try doing that today. This will never bounce back and you will ALWAYS get a response from the Korean government. www.e-People.go.kr

We also urge everyone to pass on your message by sending postal letters, and making telephone calls. Telephoning is particularly effective as the message cannot be so easily ‘ignored’.

Thank you!

Giny

South Korea: 12/02/21 – Latest Newsletter; but PLEASE READ ALL the info below. Act as Detailed Please.

12/02 – Here is the latest newsletter from Korean Dogs.

Important – Re the call for action 1-10 in the text; we have found that in the past messages get returned by the administrator.  We understand now that the e mail lists have been updated, so maybe now they will be ok.  We have sent a set off to check out if anything is returned.

Note that a suggested letter which you can copy and include in your mail s supplied FOR EACH REGION – you cannot send just one for all; they have to be copied from the 1-10 regions given; and then sent to those contacts in that region ONLY.

UPDATE – fairly quickly, within minutes; we have had 6 out of the mails sent returned to us.  We expect more very soon.  We have contacted Korean Dogs in California to tell them of our experiences and we hope maybe they will get back to us.

In the meantime here is a statement they have on their site:

You have so many petitions. Can you automate it so that we can sign them all at once?

We do have a lot of petitions as it is one of the most effective ways to raise awareness, gather support and show the Korean Government just how many people are actively opposed to dog-meat consumption. The online petition platform we have chosen to use is change.org because, not only are they a free resource, but they are one of the largest and most successful. They provide functions that are useful for our campaign, but they do not offer the functionality of allowing you to sign multiple petitions at once. Each petition should be individually read and then signed and although we recognise that, as we have so many petitions, it is very time consuming for our supporters, we are not able to change this. However, your voice is very important because your voice is the only one these animals have.

The last look from the gas chamber

Pets are also gassed or poisoned in European countries.
Why??

Because people prefer to order and buy their pets like goods from the breeder.
Of course with the right of return if the buyer does not like the “goods” or it behaves differently than desired.
And the breeders are happy.

What an inferior creature must one be to buy a friend like a wardrobe …
And how cheap and decadent you have to be to believe you have to pay for the better animal because that’s the only way to get the right design object!

And then someone looks at the Doodles – Poodles – Labbis – Bulldogs and it horrifies him.

Breeders are slave owners and animal abusers, nothing else.
And they have thousands of animals on their conscience that die in gas chambers because people would rather throw their money in the breeder’s throat than save an animal from lethal injection or the gas chamber.

You can’t buy a friend, you have to deserve one.

My best regards to all, Venus
