Dear Mark,

In the video (below) about rescuing two puppies from a deep well, you might take a look at the little unexpected character innocently minding his own business at 1.05 minutes into the video. It’s a round brown mouse, who doesn’t even look up from her preoccupations when Pushkar pulls in close the first frightened puppy. People write to us regularly about the animals in their lives. Whether they’ve found a stray kitten, or an injured crow, or upset a family of mice in the basement, or a squirrel who’s been hit by a car–we all become more sensitive learning the heroics ordinary people go through to save an animal’s life. Sharing such stories helps us keep our eyes and hearts open generally, to all animals everywhere. If that little creature hadn’t looked so peaceful in that deep well, we might have tried to bring her up too!

Saved from starvation, puppies rescued from well

Two naughty angels must have been so engrossed in playing that they didn’t realize they were heading straight for an open dry well. In they fell, dropping 60 feet, but because their fall was broken by several feet of garbage, they didn’t break even a single bone! Neighbor kids heard them crying and cheered on our rescue team from arrival to the puppies’ dizzying reunion with their Mommy. These darlings would have died of starvation and thirst without rescue.

Please donate for little ones in deep trouble.

Dear old Baloo couldn’t even lift his head, but he wouldn’t give up

Neighbours noticed a dog sleeping in the corner of their small yard, but then realized he hadn’t moved for hours. When they approached, he didn’t even stir, and that’s when they realized he was horrifically injured. His ear was shredded and the tissue all around it was swollen, and then they could see an enormous wound in his stomach. Hundreds of maggots roiled in the wounds. When we bent to pick him up, we found that the precious old sweetheart had no strength even to resist, even to raise his head. We hurried him back to the hospital and began the laborious process of removing the maggots, and his brave effort to get well began. Meet adorable old Baloo now. He’s just irresistible.

Please donate for old friends.

Maude’s eyes sparkle at last

We are currently experiencing problems with this video.

Will add and publish if we resolve.  Mark – WAV.

A deep wound on this old girl’s stomach threatened her life. When neighbors noticed blood on her side as she lay on the ground they called us to rescue her. She seemed to consider slipping away from us, but soon relaxed and allowed us to scoop her up and bring her to the hospital. We could see that the wound flap would heal well with sutures, so we sedated her, thoroughly cleaned the site and stitched her up. Maude’s eyes started sparkling as soon as she felt better, and seemed to say thank you. Your caring donations made her rescue possible. Please donate.

Celebrate the Caregivers: Vinod Meena!

Vinod.jpg

When paravet Vinod Meena started working in Animal Aid two years ago, we didn’t have a Street Treatment program yet. We wouldn’t have dreamed that in such a short time a newer member of staff could master the skills to gently handle animals who are often frightened, right out in the open, where dodging our care is on the mind of many of our outdoor patients. But Vinod has an incredibly soft touch and wins the trust of his patients with grace and speed. He is great in interacting with neighbors, too, teaching and encouraging them to do all they can to help, too. Through this program of prevention and treatment, where the animals are kept in their own environments, Vinod has saved the lives of hundreds of patients and supported their care-takers in helping their neighbourhood animals.

WAV Comment – I think I purchased 25 Christmas Day meals for the shelter dogs last year, so I know it works – and what price for a shelter dog special meal.  People waste so much during the Christmas season; for me it was very rewarding to know that I had helped to fill the hungry bellies of 25 rescue dogs last Christmas day.  Please do your bit if you can – buy a Christmas meal for a stray – Regards Mark.

Dear Mark

Years ago, I had a dream. My dream was to put an end to animal suffering in my hometown, especially to help the homeless, abandoned, and abused dogs find the love, respect and appreciation they deserve, and place them in forever homes. Little by little my dream is becoming a reality. I haven’t saved all the stray dogs in my community, but I’m getting there. I have an amazing staff and supporters who continue to help me along the way.

Last night, I woke up frightened. My heart pumping fast, hands shaking, tears in my eyes. I dreamt about my Printz (my first beautiful rescued dog, saved from death). He was all wet, full of blood, alone, in need of help. I could see him but this time, I couldn’t help him at all. I could read in his expressive eyes his hunger, pain and despair. It was more like a nightmare.

Being on their own, dogs like my Printz have freedom but they are so exposed to risk of injuries, abuses, diseases and starvation. Stray dogs are dependent on us as much as we, humans, are on them…once we get to know and love them! My Printz, alone, in my dream represents all the dogs I couldn’t save, the dogs who died alone in misery and silence. I woke up feeling depressed, but somehow, I knew I had to turn this nightmare into a positive thing…and that’s why I decided to tell you about it.

I was able to wake up from my nightmare, as all of you have. But these dogs can’t. Not unless we help them!

Christmas is the time of year when people celebrate and express the most sincere human emotions: generosity, kindness, compassion, love, appreciation. But we must remember that Christmas is not only for people ...

From time to time, the memory of Printz comes up (this time it came in the shape of a dream) to remind me of my mission and the overwhelming plight of the homeless dogs in Romania. My dream for this Christmas is to end the nightmare these dogs relive each day. Even if it’s just for one day.

Together we can end their nightmare, not only on Christmas Day, but every day!

  • 1 EUR/USD = bowl of warm meal donated on Christmas Day to #roldadogs in our shelters
  • 1 EUR/month = bowl of high nutrient food donated to starving stray dogs in the Galati area
  • 15 EUR = a winter gift for a dog (straws and jacket to keep warm)
  • 50 EUR = a visit to the vet for an injured, rescued dog

Here we are looking a little more into animal welfare in the Ukraine.

We give a very brief summary with associated links for more.

For the past 20 years, Naturewatch Foundation has been actively running projects in Ukraine, working with animal protection NGOs and municipalities to implement humane and sustainable stray dog population management schemes, following the recommendations of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OiE).

India: 4 sweethearts covered in solid tar, only able to move their eyes

INDA0001

4 sweethearts covered in solid tar, only able to move their eyes

Four incredibly dear puppies came close to losing their lives in a horrendous accident when they stumbled into spilled tar in a garbage pile. When the first one wandered in and got stuck, she must have cried with so much emotion that the others came to see what was the matter, and they too got glued down by the awful tar.

We knew they had a mother, but we couldn’t find her until the day following their rescue and the hours-long process of removing the tar with oil and dish soap. The little sweethearts were dazed with confusion, pain, fear and frustration, and two were so completely covered that all they could move was their eyes. But by the time Mommy arrived, they were freed from the poisonous grip of the tar and ready for the comfort of her love.

Help suffering sweethearts when they need us the most. Please donate.

Your Voice Is Being Heard in the Fight Against Dog Meat

nami delivers.jpg

Above – Nami delivering petitions to the governor’s office.

We have an exciting update from South Korea.

A petition from Lady Freethinker and Save Korean Dogs to close more than 250 illegal dog meat farms in Ganghwa Island County (part of Incheon City), S. Korea, has reached Governor Yoo Cheon Ho.

More than 30,000 of you signed the petition to urge the governor to enforce S. Korea’s laws and close all facilities that violate them, sparing animals from being crammed into tiny cages and brutally killed by electrocution, hanging, even being boiled alive.

LFT partner and Save Korean Dogs founder Nami Kim delivered the petition to the governor’s office. She expressed hope after having met with the county’s livestock department, who showed strong interest in “Empty Cages,” which provides former owners of permanently closed dog meat farms pathways to launch alternative careers.
We are encouraged by this news and will continue distributing petitions, running bus ads, and aiding the rescue of dogs from Korea’s meat trade until every dog meat farm is closed.

A poor man from Bhilwara, a town two hours from Udaipur by train, travels the distance every four months to help the animals with a donation of Rs 15,000 ($215) he has collected from friends and family. He doesn’t have a car; he shares his small house with 8 other people. A prosperous Indian who lives in Indonesia sends USD $1000 every month. A young woman from Toronto has sent us a part of her very first paycheck. With all the differences in our circumstances, we are knit together by love of animals none of us have even met before. This is the kindness humanity is capable of. Though we can tremble at the dangerousness of human beings, we can also glow in the light of their goodness, too. Thank you, Mighty Supporters!

Flopsy is disfigured and majestic!

Flopsy is a beautiful donkey who endured pain most of us cannot imagine. A maggot wound which appears to have started in his ear traveled to his jaw. If you’ve ever had an ear ache you can imagine his pain. Although Flopsy is permanently disfigured by the scarring on his ear, he completely recovered from his travels to the very brink of death.

Flopsy snuggles, he promenades, he eats with gusto and, like anyone who has gotten over excruciating pain, the gift of forgetting all about it and returning to a life of casual good health is indescribably sweet.

You can heal someone magnificent. Please donate.

Poor elderly man prays that his wounded dog will be saved. Watch ’til their reunion!

An elderly sadhu (holy man) had been searching for his dog for several days, and when he found him, he was horrified to find the huge maggot wound on his neck. Although we promised the broken-hearted man that we would return his dog when he healed, we weren’t sure we could save him because the wound was so big and deep. Watch the surprise we got when we brought his beloved friend back to him. Please donate, to keep families like this together.

Twilight was dragging himself in a gutter with a brain injury–and we rescued him!

This older dog so confused and hurt that he was pulling himself sideways along a gutter, air bubbles gurgling up in the water where when his nose bobbed into it. His eye was seriously injured and his brain damaged after being hit in the head, probably by a car, and for several days he couldn’t stand and he wouldn’t eat. We treated him for head trauma to control swelling and supported him with IV drips and comforting hands, and slowly what we feared he had lost forever started to come back to him. He’s wise and wonderful: meet Twilight today.

Please donate. Every dog’s Twilight years should be sweet.

We thank you deeply for all you do, are, and inspire for animals.

Dear Mark,

We hear a lot of bad news these days. Climate change frightens us deeply. Understanding more and more about animal suffering, the populations of many wild animals and insects in tragic decline, oceans without fish, and precious forests going up in smoke is hard to cope with.

Getting involved is one of the best ways to turn hopelessness into optimism. Visit Animal Aid if you can, immerse yourself in our rescue videos, and let our news of animals getting better help balance your weary hearts.

Dog’s massive wound shrinks before our very eyes.

Teddy was dying an excruciating death when we got the call. We found him curled up with a massive head wound, hundreds of maggots boring tunnels into his flesh. He hardly had the strength to raise his head. We rushed him back to the hospital, applied the powder that kills maggots, and in the morning began the arduous task of removing them and debriding the wound. What amazed us was not just the size of the wound–but how fast Teddy responded to treatment. His eyes say it all–the vastness of his innocence, his response to tenderness, and his trust. Repeated wound flushings and dressings were rewarded: Big wounds can disappear.

Please donate for the next sweetheart’s amazing recovery.

Lolo was mangled by a speeding rickshaw–but all better now!

Lolo was peacefully resting by the side of the road when a speeding rickshaw tore past, ripping apart a huge piece of flesh on his chest, slicing his forehead, and his delicate mouth. The driver didn’t even slow down, but horrified witnesses immediately called our ambulance to the rescue. Lolo has been such an incredible darling from the very first moments, patiently allowing our medical team to give him daily wound dressings, thoroughly flushing dirt and bacteria from the wound sites, and bandaging him up to hurry his complete healing–which took about 6 weeks. Lolo’s a happy boy now. You too can take away someone’s pain.

Disabled (and darling) dog bounces back after weeks of physio therapy

Hit by a car and found hiding under the street in a sewage ditch, this sweet girl was in terrible pain. Our rescuer had to crouch-walk through stench and filth to rescue her, but she hardly resisted. Back at Animal Aid we were relieved that she had no fractures but it would take weeks of physiotherapy to repair her damaged hips. We named her Koshish (which means effort in Hindi) because she was the best little physio therapy patient ever. Hurt by accident. Helped on purpose.

Please donate for the next angel hit by a car.

Celebrate the Caregivers: Raju Meghwal

raju

We have the fastest rates of recovery and the lowest rate of post-surgery complications in our history, and one reasons is that our anaesthesia protocols and practices are so good. Raju, our anesthetist and surgery assistant, helps assess dogs’ condition pre-surgery and monitors them continuously throughout the surgical process. Each day Raju and Dr Vaibhav perform 7-10 sterilization surgeries and several times a week they also perform surgeries like amputations, tumour removals, eye enucleations, and wound repairs. We deeply appreciate Raju’s meticulous accuracy in administering anaesthesia. Getting it right time after time requires concentration, practice and care, and Raju has all three, in fantastic abundance!

Serbian Investigations – An ‘EU Candidate Country’. Do we Expect This from EU Member States ?

I want to pick up again on some of our (SAV) past work in Serbia; not for any specific reason; just that it fits well into the recent post by Venus which deals with stray animals within the EU -here is the link: https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2019/10/14/stray-animals-abandoned-friends/   – I have also added some links and video footage at the end of this post.

Firstly, welcome to everyone and anyone who visits the site from around the globe – it is good to see you and I hope you and I hope you find our articles of interest.

Secondly, and very importantly; never judge the way of a nation by the actions of just a few folk that live there. Serbia has some brilliant animal campaigners, and it has been my pleasure over the last 15+ years to work with many of them – people who have my full respect and people that I can call friends. There are some great little private, individual shelters where people are doing everything they can for animals – check out this SAV Facebook site of ours to see what I mean: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SerbianAnimalsVoice/

I threw together some information about Serbian animal welfare legislation some years back – visit here for more of the same: https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-serbian-animals/

Today I want to track back to an issue we dealt with many years ago – that of the welfare of animals on some Serbian farms. Please remember, Serbia is currently a nation which is a ‘Candidate Country’ to join the EU. To become a member state, it will supposedly enforce all the legislation required of it under EU rules. But we know these don’t work anyway, and the EU never enforces its own legislation; as we have proven so many times with animal transport breaches over the years regarding Regulation 1/2005.

So, the (EU) rules say that all farm animals must be kept to certain standards – which is a joke really considering how many times we have helped to expose EU wrong doings in the past:

https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2019/08/19/england-breaking-news-viva-win-against-hogwood-after-years-of-showing-pig-animal-abuse-tesco-stores-ban-meat-from-supplier-after-expose-of-conditions-and-animal-abuse/

https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2019/05/10/germany-the-export-champion-of-the-eu/

Going back; we looked into specific farm animal welfare in the past. As part of the CIWF investigation / campaign team in the past; https://www.ciwf.org.uk/ I was able to call on their extensive experience to help me with regard a few things about EU / Serbian farm animal welfare legislation. Phil helped me a lot and contributed to one of the articles I did on SAV.

Have a look at these pictures that we published at the time – taken on a Serbian farm:

If you are / have been a meat eater in the past; would you want to eat meat that has been raised in this way ? – this is footage that was taken undercover on a Serbian farm a few years back. It is totally non compliant with EU standards; as detailed in the following links:

Remember, Serbia is now a Candidate Country to become an official EU member state.

We provided our evidence and photographs to the EU Commissioner for Enlargement – Commissioner Hahn; several years ago; as a result, we were ignored; as many animal welfare groups are when they show up the EU for the non enforcement of its own EU standards. We accept that our evidence will be ignored; whilst we hear great words regarding standards coming from EU ‘mouths’.

We also provided photographic evidence of dead pigs which had literally been dumped on the roadside. See the pictures here. Why had they died ?; of what ?; and why were their bodies not disposed of in accordance with proper legislation requirements ?

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2011/12/11/serbia-dead-farm-animal-bodies-just-dumped-near-the-highway-a-perfect-food-source-for-stray-animals-a-perfect-method-of-spreading-disease-and-a-perfect-way-for-corrupt-politicians-to-keep-catchin/

Stray animals (Dogs) are a big issue in Serbia as we have recently pointed out. Do farm animal carcasses such as these pigs strewn over the roadside not act as a source of attraction for hungry and desolate stray dogs ? – the whole system fails for animals, whilst at the same time the EU opens its arms to new member states; with the ‘EU Utopia’ prophecy in which there is nothing wrong !

Finally, we also took the issue of Serbian live animal transport to the authorities; who were adamant that sheep exported to Israel for slaughter had not been sent live from Serbia. Some Serbian shelters were also targeted with closure if we carried on with our expose.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2015/09/26/further-news-about-exports-to-israel/

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2015/09/18/serbia-breaking-news-serbia-exports-live-sheep-to-israel/

serb sheep 2

serb sheep 3

serb sheep 5

serb sheep 8

Now you know why we hate live animal exports !

In the end, the Serbian authorities had to come clean and confirm that the sheep had been shipped live from Serbia. And just for the record, all the shelters threatened with closure by the authorities as part of this expose were left to carry on with their excellent work.

Remember – Serbia is a EUROPEAN NATION – we expect better animal welfare standards of it.

Still to come – out expose of Serbian Zoos and the terrible conditions which animals have to endure – fighting to survive daily whilst the authorities ignore meeting their legal requirements to undertake inspections.

Best regards to all;

For the animals – Mark.

Stray animals: abandoned friends

Pro-Brexit supporters burn an EU flag during a UKIP demonstration in central London

In many European countries brutal mass murders are used against the high number of abandoned stray dogs. Through state subsidies and the establishment of killing stations, the killing of dogs has become a lucrative business that has to be stopped as soon as possible!

streune katze verletztpg

For each animal caught, the dog catchers commissioned by the towns receive a certain amount – to earn as much as possible, however beastly any means are right: The stray dogs are pursued and hunted, poisoned and abused, tortured and killed in a cruel manner. Just before major international events, such as the Olympic Games or the World Cup, tens of thousands of dogs are killed to clean up the streets of large cities.

Strassenhunde-Rumaenien-

With our petition we demand a ban on legal dog kills in Europe and the financial support of nationwide castrations by the countries.
Killing stations are to be closed and abolished. No stray animals should be killed anymore for an international sports event.
All collected signatures will be submitted to the European Parliament.

Please sign now, because your voice saves the dogs life!

Petition Gegen das Töten von Straßenhunden in Europa

My comment: Stray animals were once family members. They were faithful, happy, thankful for giving them a home.
Brainless people, without moral education, without any responsibility for the fate of the weaker ones, have put them on the street.
In Spain every 6 minutes an animal is abandoned on the street.
Then they starve, they suffer.

The accession of many southern European countries to the EU has brought no benefits for the animals.
On the contrary! The introduction of state animal shelters has become a hell for the strays, and these homes in many EU countries are being commercialized and operators are getting money per day and per dog. The more dogs they catch and the less they spend on care, the more lucrative this business is.

In the streets they are poisoned, shot, burned, beaten to death, almost no one cares about the stray animals. In most southern countries, the strays dare not on the road during the day; they wait for the night, they run through the empty street emaciated, sick, injured, hungry and look for a piece of bread in each garbage container.
Only a consistent castration campaign across Europe could get the problem under control, at least so that it does not get bigger.

Many abandoned friends are waiting in the animal shelters.
And they demand nothing more than a little food, a little caring, and loyalty.
There is certainly enough love in the heart of a feeling person for a new friendship.

My best regards to all, Venus

By Mark:

I want to pick up more about what Venus is saying here. I founded SAV back in 2005 in order to try and help the stray dogs (and cats) of Serbia. As Venus says, For each animal caught, the dog catchers commissioned by the towns receive a certain amount – to earn as much as possible, however beastly any means are right: The stray dogs are pursued and hunted, poisoned and abused, tortured and killed in a cruel manner.

Stray dog abuse in Serbia is rife – and we campaigned about improving the situation for many years. People in government and in the regional municipalities are getting very rich on the back of animal killing – money from central government funds being paid out for every animal killed. We campaigned for the ‘kill’ money to be invested into a campaign of national sterilisation for strays; our efforts were met with ridicule by the (very rich as we are thanks) officials. Killing strays made them money, so killing strays is what they continue to do.

You can check out all the information with regard Serbian strays at https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-serbian-animals/ – the ‘Did you Know’ pyramids show just how many strays can be produced by a pair of dogs or cats over a series of years. It is mind blowing to realise that so called intelligent people who are at the heart of government and local municipalities put their own financial interests ahead of a national plan to reduce the numbers of stray animals roaming the streets.

Its simple; remember; a sterilised animal will never produce any more young; so why not the national sterilisation campaign in Serbia ? – sadly, officials put their own financial status way above the welfare of animals – the killing machine is what they encourage; and sadly; no sterilisation provides them with an endless supply of dogs and cats to round up and slaughter – getting rich as a result thanks very much.

Here are a few more links to our past work in Serbia. Remember, this is just one nation in Europe where this killing frenzy happens. Until the EU does something; the slaughter of innocents will continue. Very sadly; pigs and chickens make money for nations in international EU trade – stray animals do not. Things need to change.

Regards Mark.

In the following video link you can see a (Serbian) stray dog which has been sterilised by animal welfare organisations – checked and given treatment for disease and illness; and fitted with a red ear tag to show that it has been sterilised. This means nothing to the authorities, as you can see in the footage; the poor dog is darted ready for collection (and death) by the shinters who can be seen balaclava clad waiting across the street to move in and take the dog. This dog is innocent and has been sterilised; it will produce no more strays. The red tag means nothing to the authorities; their aim – to just kill, kill and kill.
