California: bans the murder of fur animals with traps. We say: thank you!

usa-flaggen-bleistift-jpg

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill Wednesday that makes it illegal to trap animals or sell their fur, making California the first state in the U.S. to impose a fur trapping ban.

The Wildlife Protection Act of 2019 puts an end to a longstanding practice that was entwined with California’s frontier roots but that has steadily declined in recent decades with the rise of conservationism.

“Historically, fur trapping played a significant role in the extirpation of wolves and wolverines and the severe declines in sea otters, fishers, marten, beaver, and other fur-bearing species in California,” the bill states. “Because individual trappers concentrate their operations in limited geographical areas, they can locally deplete populations of the species they target, impairing the ecological functioning of the area and diminishing opportunities for wildlife watching in these areas.”

The legislation notes: “Prohibiting fur trapping would eliminate the needless taxpayer subsidized killing of California’s native species for the international fur trade, while better protecting the role these species place in our ecosystems and economy.”

Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez speaks during the Assembly session in Sacramento, Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Gonzalez’ bill, AB273, that now makes it illegal to trap animals in California for recreation or to sell their fur, Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019. (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli): “Fur trapping is a cruel practice that has no place in 21st century California. Thank you @CAgovernor for signing our #AB273 to make our state the first in the nation to ban this necessary (and costly) practice”!

Fox1

Trappers typically strangle, shoot or beat animals to death. The law specifically outlaws the use of the “steel-jawed leghold trap” or any trap that has sawtoothed or spiked jaws for trapping animals. It also prohibits the sale of “raw fur,” defined as any fur, pelt or skin that hasn’t been tanned or cured.

coyote in fallejpg

The number of licenses for recreational and commercial fur trapping have declined in recent years, according to The Associated Press. The state issued 133 licenses last year, resulting in 1,568 animals trapped and 1,241 pelts sold. Animals commonly trapped for their fur in California include coyotes, gray foxes, beavers, badgers and mink.

coyote fallepg

California also averages roughly 500 annual trapping licenses for pest control. Under the new law, it will still be legal to trap rats, mice, voles, moles and gophers.

State lawmakers are also considering legislation that would ban the sale of all fur products, along with a bill to prohibit circuses from using most animals in their performances in the state.

“There’s been a real change in attitudes about how we treat animals,” Gonzalez told the “Los Angeles Times”.

Environmental groups, including the Center for Biological Diversity, have opposed fur trapping as contributing to declines animal populations, including sea otters and beavers. But other groups, including the California Farm Bureau Federation, opposed the bill, arguing ranchers and farmers hire commercial trappers to control wildlife and protect their crops. They say banning trapping and the sale of fur would end that practice.

My comment: And again, the farmers complain.
The farmers can protect their animals (which they have for slaughter, anyway) with fences. The peasants can not undestand any other way of living together with animals, except animals to benefit and to slaughter. And if another animal interferes this procedure, they mean it needs to be eliminated.
There is nothing more devious and cruel than traps.
And this devious method of killing is practiced by both: farmer and hunter.

Because I live up in the Black Forest, I have often found some such murderous installations and “edited” them accordingly.

Thanks California! it’s only a matter of time before other cities or countries introduce the same ban.

Sri Lanka: slave runs amok

At least 17 people were injured at a religious procession in Kotte, Sri Lanka when two elephants ran amok, according to local reports.

Footage captured by a local news outlet showed one of the elephants running down a street. More than a dozen festival-goers were injured after an elephant taking part in a Buddhist pageant in Sri Lanka went on a rampage.

elefant mit kostümg

The procession in Kotte, near the country’s capital, began with a government minister placing a sacred relic on a decorated casket atop an elephant adorned with shiny red clothing. But it quickly turned disastrous when the elephant surged forward, sending some of the terrified worshipers straight into another one which then ran amok.

Shocking footage showed a man riding on the elephant’s back narrowly avoid being trampled after he was shaken off as the huge animal heads straight into a crowd.

Officials from two hospitals said 18 injured people were brought in following the stampede, including women and at least two children, and 16 have been discharged.

It remains unknown what actually triggered the elephant (!!!)

It is another elephant-related controversy for Sri Lanka after photos emerged last month showing a starving 70-year-old female forced to don a colourful costume hiding her emaciated body. According to the Save Elephant Foundation, Tikiri was one of 60 elephants forced to work for 10 nights in a row at the Esala Perahera Buddhist festival in Kandy.

abgemagerter elefant jpg

The organisation’s founder, Lek Chailert, said in a heartfelt post on World Elephant Day: ‘No one sees her bony body or her weakened condition, because of her costume. ‘No one sees the tears in her eyes, injured by the bright lights that decorate her mask, no one sees her difficulty to step as her legs are short shackled while she walks.’

And…We are on the side of the weak, the suffering one, the enslaved elephant who has courageously tried to gain his freedom for even a few minutes.

The human “victims” were taken care of immediately, the animal victim is certainly caught again from his slave owners and maybe even punished.

In the daily confrontation with the crimes against animals we need a big portion strong nerves, in order not to run amok too.

Vet says badger culls caused ‘immense pain’

By Pallab Ghosh Science correspondent, BBC News

badgers this is somerset.co.uk

WAV Comment – we have argued for years that a complete lack of decent biosecurity controls are one of the main reasons behind Bovine TB rather than the government / farmer attitude of simply blaming the Badgers..

What is biosecurity?

Biosecurity is the measures taken to protect against or prevent the transmission of infectious disease, defined by Defra as “designed to reduce the risk of transmission of infectious disease” in its Guidance to Natural England4 . Biosecurity can include measures that prevent infected cattle from entering a herd; measures that protect against the risk from neighbouring herds by the use of double-fencing, cleaning and disinfecting shared equipment or vehicles, wearing protective clothing, using disinfectant foot dips and taking precautions when spreading slurry and manure; and measures that minimise the risk of infection between cattle and wildlife (badgers, deer, wild boar, etc), such as preventing badger access to feed stores, fencing off setts and latrines, using mains water for cattle, and raising troughs and regularly cleaning and disinfecting them.

Cattle are bought and sold to new farms all over the country. As a result, they have to be transported to new ‘homes’. If they are carrying BTB, is it then not possible that these cattle can take the disease to their new location; and infect herds which up until this time, may be BTB free ?

We know from all or work with live animals transport over the years, that transporters are not always cleaned out and disinfected to the standards expected of them. If you don’t clean and disinfect trucks fully, is there not a chance that disease which may be in waste from the animals and lying in the transporter; may not remain, and the disease be passed on to new animals carried in the same transporter ?

Up to 9,000 of badgers are likely to have suffered “immense pain” in culls to control cattle TB, according to a former government adviser.

Prof Ranald Munro is the ex-Chair of an independent expert group appointed by the government to assess its trials.

He has written to Natural England to say that the policy is causing “huge suffering”.

He adds that the culls are not reducing TB in cattle and in one area the incidence of the disease has gone up.

The culls began in 2012 following appeals from cattle farmers whose livelihoods are continuing to be damaged by the spread of TB.

Prof Munro’s independent expert group found that up 23% of badgers took more than five minutes to die after they were shot. These figures prompted the group to conclude that the culls were inhumane in its assessment report to government. This document’s publication was delayed but its contents were revealed by BBC News in 2014.

The expert group was disbanded by the Department for Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) ministers, who said that its work had been completed – though this was against the wishes of many of the experts involved, with one claiming that ministers were “wilfully” ignoring scientific advice.

Speaking ahead of the expected announcement of new culling areas for 2019 later this week, Prof Munro estimates that 40,000 badgers have been culled so far which according to the expert group’s figures equates to thousands of them dying slowly.

“The numbers are huge, they really are. If you look at the likelihood of not dying within five minutes of being shot, you are looking at 3,000 badgers having suffered immense pain at a minimum. It could be as high as 9,000. There is a huge issue of suffering in these badgers.”

Related image

Prof Munro’s remarks come as he and 19 other vets, scientists and animal welfare campaigners wrote to Natural England, the body that oversees the culls.

A freedom of information request by the group has shown that as the number of cull areas has increased over the years, the environment watchdog’s monitoring staff have been spread ever thinner.

In 2014, 20% of culls were supervised by Natural England staff. In 2018, it was able to monitor only 0.4%.

“The terms of the roll-out of the culling have not been adhered to,” Prof Munro said.

“They are saying ‘oh yes, we are observing’; but they are observing at a level which is of no value whatsoever in determining the humanness of culling and whether badgers are being injured or how long they are taking to die.”

Weight of science

The FOI request also revealed that in the very first cull area, in Gloucestershire, which could be among the first to see benefits if there are any from the policy, the number of new herds confirmed to have TB increased from 10 in 2017 to 23 in 2018.

This single increase in one year in one area is not sufficient to show that the culls are not working. More data and expert analysis will be needed to determine their effectiveness one way or another.

But the experts and campaigners write in their letter: “We are unconvinced that the culling of large numbers continues to be justified in the view of recent data showing zero disease control benefits after six years of culling of badgers in Gloucestershire.”

A Natural England spokesperson said: “We help to implement the badger culling policy under the direction of Defra and in line with decisions taken by ministers. We are in the process of reviewing the badger cull applications for 2019 made under that policy and will communicate decisions in due course.

“One of our roles is to independently consider licence applications to cull or vaccinate badgers, and we take policy advice from Defra when deciding if the activity will deliver effective disease control. Licensing is not done lightly and those involved in the cull – farmers, contractors and Natural England staff – take the welfare of badgers very seriously.”

EU: environmental crime remains under contract

Pro-Brexit supporters burn an EU flag during a UKIP demonstration in central London

The treaty with Mercosur does not provide for sanctions when a country like Brazil illegally destroys forest. That’s what the European Commission acknowledged.

amazonas.3 png

The EU Free Trade Agreement with Brazil and the other members of the Mercosur Group does not provide for sanctions for breaches of environmental protection obligations.
The dispute settlement mechanism of the treaty “does not ultimately lead to economic sanctions,” said Sabine Weyand, Director – General for Trade Policy of the European Commission, in Berlin on Wednesday. Instead, after unsuccessful consultations, a panel of experts would be set up to investigate the allegations (!!!)

“And the reports from this panel are public,” said Weyand. However, according to the sustainability chapter of the agreement, the recommendations of these experts are non-binding (!!!)

69476632_508922149856447_569268216657502821_n_002Image: osgemeos

The agreement reached at the end of June with the Mercosur Group from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay is intended to give the EU access to a hitherto highly isolated market with 260 million citizens.
Most tariffs on EU imports such as cars should be abolished, which would save the economy € 4 billion a year. In return, the EU wants to lower its import taxes on industrial products from the Mercosur states and further open its market for agricultural products.
In the agreement, both sides also undertake to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, to fight illegal clearing and to protect workers’ rights.

In view of the current illegal forest fires in Brazil, there are increasing calls to ratify the Mercosur Treaty. President Jair Bolsonaro even advocates grubbing up, critics say. Because of the agreement, more meat from Brazil will come to the EU, so that more forests in the South American country would be cleared for agriculture.

mato grosso

However, the German government does not want to stop the treaty because it has “an ambitious sustainability chapter with binding regulations on climate protection” (!!!).
On Wednesday, government spokesman Steffen Seibert formulated that not so clear, but also did not announce that the agreement to burst. Obviously, Germany and the EU now want to use “pinpricks” to get Bolsonaro to tackle the current forest fires more rigorously.

In the text are only nice appeals, the contract has already given the “tropical Trump” Bolsonaro, who designates climate change as an invention, a great reputation gain.

amazonas brenntpng

The free trade agreement is a driver of the fires in the South American country. Brazil creates space for grazing land and soy plantations – because Europe is to be supplied with the meat of 600,000 cattle and countless chickens. In addition, there are 300,000 tonnes of agrofuels, which should flow into the EU and are harmful to the climate. The agreement stipulates that the Mercosur states in the future to pay 99,000 tonnes of beef per year only 7.5 percent duty instead of the previous 40-45 percent. 180,000 tonnes of poultry meat can be imported duty-free.

The EU Commission’s admission that the sustainability chapter does not provide for sanctions will strengthen the opponents of the Mercosur Treaty. In the end, however, the European Parliament as well as the parliaments and governments of the member states will decide.

https://taz.de/Handelsabkommen-mit-Mercosur-Staaten/!5620280/

My comment: Clearing, burning, fattening, growing! this is the business model of the meat mafia.

Usually it runs in the Amazon, but not only there, from time to time following the same pattern: First, valuable tree trunks are taken from the natural forests, then the rest burned down.

This is followed by pastures for the cattle and after a few years the pastures are broken, mostly to grow soybeans. The rainforest ecosystem regenerates itself, but the pastures are no more productive.

After deforestation, a stable balance is destroyed. The soils do not produce more – neither for grasses nor for crops. The proportion of beef imported from Brazil into the EU is growing steadily – by nine percent in last year alone.

In addition, genocide happens simultaneously!
Not “only” animals and plants, but also a whole range of human peoples lose their habitat through the illegal fires in Amazon.

These are mass murderers who commit their crimes to everything that is alive and useful to this planet, and for these criminals, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in the Kostarican San José is responsible.

indios mit hund

So we should ask ourselves: what do we import with our meat consumption? First, this biblical destruction of the rainforest, the destruction of thousand animal species; At the same time, we are importing a gross violation of human rights because the indigenous peoples are brutally expelled, removed from their habitat by force and murder.

We feed the cattle barons of Brazil, and Amazon is also burning because of us.

My best regards to all, Venus

Hunt for woman who stubbed cigarette out in puppy’s eye

This bitch needs to be identified and reported to the authorities.  Can you help ?

Sickening footage shows a woman stubbing out a cigarette in the eye of a defenceless puppy.

NEWS COPY - WITH VIDEO?? Animal rights groups were today (05/08) hunting a cruel woman who was filmed stubbing out a cigarette on a puppy's EYES. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Singapore was alerted to the video showing the dog in pain after it emerged in their country. Footage shows how the woman holds a cigarette in one hand while with the other she grabs a poor black and white puppy by the neck. The cold-blooded torturer begins calmly smoking before repeatedly crushing the burning cigarette on the puppy's eyes and face. The poor puppy can be heard crying out in pain. However, his yelps are stifled as he appears to have his mouth taped shut. Having finished burning the puppy, the woman then snaps its paws. The animal welfare organisation is now appealing for help to identify the woman after initial claims that it was filmed in Singapore or another country in the region.

The dog’s mouth appears to be taped shut, stiffing its yelps as the culprit repeatedly burns the dog’s face. She calmly smokes with one hand while holding the puppy by the neck and snaps its paws after she is finished.

Germany and the hunting terror

deutsche Flagge mit Bananen jpg

Almost 385,000 hunters exist in Germany.
Actually, this is a wretched minority of 0,45% unofficial psychopaths with an official license to murder defenseless animals in the forest. The hunting law in Germany is an empowerment law and dates back to 1933. It authorizes hunters to seize foreign property.

First of all we have to make one thing clear: The aim of the hunt is the execution or the killing, possibly of the most beautiful animals as a personal trophy – and nothing else.

There are several hunting (murder) methods in Germany.
Person hunting, social hunting, pressure hunt, hunt, construction hunt … all equipped with dirty means to lure defenseless animals out of their homes with trained dogs or to make them easier victim for the hunter.
One of the cruelest hunting methods is the “sealing system” (Schliefanlagen).

schliefanlagejpg
What is a sealing system?

The dogs are trained on live foxes, which are caught and caged for this purpose. The hunters thereby violate the Animal Welfare Act § 3 paragraph 7.

Of course, the hunter trains his dogs hidden from the public, with the purpose of finding the foxes in their burrows and more easily driving in front of the hunter or “killing” them directly in their burrows.

The hunter does not care about the fox. The foxes are locked up and get some food thrown into the cage so they do not starve.
Usually locals or strollers are aware of the fact that the foxes are crying out in the cages while attempting to escape. No construction, no hiding place or shelter. Nothing. Only the bare ground and the grid in mind that denies access to visible freedom.

schliefanlage01

The purpose of these facilities is to train the dogs to drive the foxes out of their burrows and so the hunter can shoot them more easily. Or to teach the dogs to choke them in their burrow.

schliefanlage mit hund und fuchs_oHunting dogs are thus “trained”. Ask a hunter, he will claim that the foxes live a wonderful life in the sealing facilities... Such methods are legal in Germany!

Construction and function.

The dogs should learn to be able to hunt through the corridors of the burrow behind the foxes. Young foxes are preferred. They are still relatively inexperienced, relatively easy to catch in life traps and are not such a big threat to the dogs when fighting.
For this purpose is built an artificial structure with several aisles of concrete pipes or plates, which meet again and again in different places and converge.
About slider, lid and grid, the hunter decides how far the fox can escape and whether the dog should reach him or not.

schliefanlage02
A fox is driven into the tube. The dog behind. In contrast to the real, own fox construction, the fox does not know these courses.
Besides, it does not know which courses are blocked and which are not. Hounded by the dog, the fox tries to escape and, logically, escapes in the direction to wich hunter forces him, with shotting off the corridors.

At first, the hunter usually takes care that the dog can not reach the fox. But that does not change the stress the fox is exposed to. In fear of death, he tries to escape. Not infrequently he suffers from a heart attack or shock. But what does that matter? Then he is killed or the dog may kill him for “reward”.
In the further hunting dog training a direct confrontation between dog and fox is wanted, whereby the hunter looks after his dog. If the dog has caught the fox safely, the hunter looks amused to how the fox is massacred by the dog. Should the fox succeed in fending off the dog, or is there even a risk of injury to the dog, the hunter naturally helps his dog to kill the fox.

FuchsAbbalgen

As of fall, sealing facilities are usually taken out of service. In winter, no hunter feels like training dogs. Foxes that are still in the plant are killed by the hunter or have to give their life to the last dog of the season.
No fox leaves such a Guantanamo alive.

The video, although in German, still helps to get a look behind the fences and barracks

Paul Parin is a neurologist psychoanalyst and hunter himself. He wrote the book “The passion of the hunter” (Hamburg, 2003) where he speaks of the passion, the addiction, the hunting fever without shame and with cynicism: “Since my first hunting adventures I know: hunting opens up a space for crime to murder and for sexual desire , no matter when and where is hunted. … The real hunt can not be had without deliberate killing. Passionate hunters want to kill. Hunting without murder is a self-abolishing concept … And because it’s about passion, greed, lust – just a fever – this book is about sex and crime, about lust and crime of all kinds, about murder and sexual murder. “

ALF-HochsitzGermany, Lower Saxony: in 2019 13 such hunting facilities were destroyed (© Presseportal/Polizei)

Ladies and gentlemen, fortunately, we live in a democracy and we have freedom of expression. And my opinion is: hunters are terrorists, murderers and liars!

Best regards to all, Venus

New Zeland: we say “thank you”!

new-zealand-flag

Swimming with dolphins is the wish of many tourists and they are willing to pay a lot of money. Scientists have been criticizing dolphin swimming for a long time. To protect the dolphins, now New Zealand has banned swimming with dolphins. Not the profit may be in the foreground, but the animal welfare, so the government of New Zealand.

In the Bay of Islands on the North Island of New Zealand, people were able to swim with the dolphins. With dire consequences, the number of dolphins visiting the bay has fallen 66% since 1999. Now tourists can only watch the dolphins from a distance. This is a great step on behalf of New Zealand to protect dolphins in the area.

Finalist-Dolphin-Dance-by-Barbara-Louw-768x512

With boats, the tourists go to the dolphins swimming on the water. As soon as the dolphins arrive, the tourists jump into the water and try to stroke the dolphins and take a photo for the social networks. Often it is the nature lovers who visit New Zealand because of the beautiful landscape, but they are unaware that it is their actions that endanger nature. Because people who swim with dolphins disturb the sensitive animals and disturb their natural life.

Neuseeland delphinen und taucher

It was not until May 2019 that the New Zealand government published that the environment in New Zealand was in serious trouble. Every year more than two million tourists come to New Zealand. And in the Bay of Islands, tour operators offer dolphin-watching tours in nature. “Explore the Bay of Islands on a nature exploration cruise on the high-speed catamaran. Experience these intelligent and playful mammals in their natural habitat: “From 74 euros a tourist can book this four-hour tour.

Many people are unaware that swimming with dolphins in the sea disturbs their way of life and leads to behavioral changes. When people actively pursue and encourage dolphins to swim with them and spend time with them, it is called harassment.
Researchers at Newcastle University have already shown in a study that this thesis is well justified. For example, they were able to prove that the animals are tired and dull when people come to their habitats for dolphin swimming.

ADAC Reisemagazin 0163_240_Eliat_Delphine

“Swimming with dolphins may be sold as a life-affirming experience, but research shows it can be traumatic to marine mammals themselves,” the researchers said.

Since 1999, the local population of the Bay of Islands has decreased by 66% to a core group of only 19 dolphins, which are frequently visited by the Bay of Islands. Latest research shows a 75% calf mortality rate – the highest in New Zealand, internationally or in captivity, according to the New Zealand Department of the Environment on August 29, 2019. “The population of dolphins in the Bay of Islands can only be protected if everyone contributes to it contributes. ”

This is a great step for the sea animals in New Zealand. We hope that other parts of the world will take such steps and give the population of wildlife priority over profit.

All over the world, animals are exploited for tourism and this very industry is booming.
But things are going well, as popular protests are on the rise, and in June 2019, the captivity of whales and dolphins was banned in Canada. In Canada, a law has been passed that the dolphins and whales should no longer be captured to be mistreated for the enjoyment of visitors. And in Hawaii too, the government plans to introduce new laws prohibiting swimming with dolphins.

They were born to live freely and not to be mistreated for profit.

Below is a video from 2018 showing the popular activity that was banned now, thanks New Zealand!

My comment: The supply regulates the demand, it is in the entertainment industry.

The tour organizers are not at all interested in the suffering of the animals, even if mass extinction happens, the entertainment mafia does not shy away from it.
The tourists are not informed under what dire circumstances and consequences the dolphins of nature are snatched away.
But there are a large number of them who, despite their information, are even less interested in animal suffering and are doing some kind of colonial tourism in exotic countries in recent years. Their main goal is to bring home selfies and rare docu photos with wild animals. They want more and more action and adventure, which usually happens at the expense of the animals.
We can save the suffering animals in the entertainment industry by sending pictures, videos and documentations to the tour operators and the relevant ministries. Of the mass alone, the change will not come.
In Germany there are only two dolphinariums left, in Nuremberg and in the zoo of Duisburg. However, there have been petitions on the Internet for some time now demanding that they be shut down and the dolphins released. Dolphinariums are also part of the dirty entertainment industry.
Only when the supply disappears, then the demand is gone.

Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival set to take place today

07 September 2019

The “traditional” festival is a horribly violent and cruel spectacle of animal suffering.

The annual Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival will take place today, Sept 7. The event occurs annually in Vietnam’s Hai Phong province.

Prior to the contests, owners do everything possible to agitate their buffalo into an aggressive state, banging gongs close to their heads, causing disorientation and profound stress which they then unleash on their equally distressed opponent.

After the fight, no animals ever survive. The buffaloes are taken out of the area, maimed and bleeding, and are violently killed and butchered so their meat can be sold for exorbitant sums.

Despite Animals Asia’s annual protests of the festival and attempts to have it cancelled, this year the only change will be that organizers have requested the number of buffaloes used in the festival events (the Do Son and Hai Luu) to be reduced by half. While that is an improvement, the suffering of even one buffalo is one too many.

Animals Asia Animal Welfare Officer, Nguyen Tam Thanh said:

“As a spectacle of violence and animal cruelty, the Do Son buffalo fights stand alone in Vietnamese culture. As Vietnam enters a new era of evolution and modernity, we call upon officials to end this cruel event. We should be setting an example for future generations with our benevolence toward animals. We should be teaching the children of Vietnam to respect animals, not abuse them.”

The event was almost shut down in 2017 after a trainer was gored to death by his own buffalo. That tragedy, along with a demand by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism that all “uncivilised” festivals be abolished, should have seen Vietnam move away from this 30-year-old “tradition”. But instead it has been permitted to not only continue, last year the event was allowed to return to national television airwaves in the country. Viewers could see trainers deliberately sharpening the horns of their buffaloes to raise the level of violence further.

Animals Asia Animal Welfare Director Dave Neale said:

“Despite demands by officials, sadly Vietnam still does not have a specific law to stop people from deliberately harming animals for entertainment. As long as these bloody fighting contests featuring animals such as dogs, cocks, goats and buffaloes continue, they will continue to be a stain on Vietnam’s image.

“The government and the vast majority of people want nothing to do with animal cruelty, but nobody has stepped up to stop it.”

Vietnam passed its first animal welfare legislation in 2016 in the form of the Animal Health law, but there is presently no provision to punish those who carry out cruelty to animals.

While amending a law is a long legal process which can take years, Animals Asia is petitioning the government to introduce and implement a Circular that would change the existing Animal Health law – a move which can happen far more quickly to outlaw deliberate cruelty to animals such as the Do Son Buffalo Fighting festival.

This year, Animals Asia has invited representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism to judge and witness the event firsthand in the hope of persuading them to end it once and for all. We have also asked children and young adults to submit drawings of buffalo suffering at the festival along with drawings of buffalo being treated well under the umbrella theme, “Respect the Lives of our Buffalo”. These drawings will be sent to the Ministry after the festival.

It’s time to end the Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival — a cruel spectacle masquerading as entertainment. Please sign our petition calling for the establishment of proper animal welfare laws in Vietnam.
