Vietnam’s first ethical elephant tours launch

Yok Don national park has stopped offering elephant rides and now encourages travellers to see elephants in their natural habitat.

Amid growing global condemnation of elephant riding as a tourist activity, Yok Don national park in southern Vietnam has ended the practice and replaced it with the first ethical elephant experience of its kind in the country.

The formally captive group of four elephants were released from their chains earlier this month and no longer carry tourists on rides through the park. Visitors can instead observe the animals roaming freely in their natural habitat.

Previously, the Yok Don elephants, like many around the country, were chained up for extended periods of time, often without access to water. They were harnessed with heavy riding baskets, sometimes carrying tourists around the park for nine hours a day.

Canada: Great News – Senate passes bill that would ban whale, dolphin captivity in Canada.

Senate passes bill that would ban whale, dolphin captivity in Canada

After a multi-year legislative battle, a bill to outlaw keeping cetaceans like whales and dolphins in captivity has cleared the Senate — all but ensuring the end of a once-popular theme park attraction in Canada.

S-203 — first introduced by now-retired Liberal senator Wilfred Moore in December 2015, with the backing of Green Party Leader Elizabeth May — would ban keeping and breeding these marine mammals in captivity through amendments to the Criminal Code.

Fines of up to $200,000 could be imposed on parks flouting the law — a sum set deliberately high as a deterrent.

The bill finally cleared the Red Chamber Tuesday night after nearly three years of debate and study. It now will be shuttled through the House of Commons by May.

The bill has the support of MPs from across the political spectrum, including Liberal Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Conservative Michelle Rempel and New Democrat Fin Donnelly.

The bill’s passage in the upper house comes after years of advocacy work by animal welfare advocates, who have long argued that holding these highly intelligent creatures in concrete tanks is a cruel and perverse form of entertainment.

The fight for cetacean rights picked up considerable public support after the release of the 2013 documentary film Blackfish, which documented some of the perils involved in holding whales, dolphins and porpoises in parks like Sea World.

The Senate bill really has two targets in mind: the Vancouver Aquarium and Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ont.

The Vancouver Aquarium once defended holding these mammals in captivity on both scientific and educational grounds, but recently said it would no longer display whales or dolphins at its facility as protests over captivity have become a “distraction” for the business.

Marineland has been a vocal opponent of the Senate bill, saying it would devastate attendance — and threaten conservation efforts — at theme parks where these animals are on display. It has also said the bill threatens the seasonal employment of hundreds of local residents during the summer months.

Marineland’s owner, John Holer, testified at a Senate committee before his death last summer, asking senators to halt the bill. Today, Marineland issued a statement calling S-203 anti-science.

“Bill S-203 was not supported by the relevant ministries or the credible scientific community,” says the statement. “Sadly, it impairs legitimate scientific and research programs and is explicitly targeted to close Marineland.

“The bill and the debate around it (have) been highly emotional, lacking in fact-based or science-based analysis and mired in unnecessary conflict incited by radical animal rights groups from the United States.”

·         Ottawa to ban capture of dolphins, whales

·         All-party group calls for an end to ‘Senate games’ on three animal rights bills

The Senate bill would, through the breeding ban, phase out captivity over time. That means Marineland would still be able to keep its current stock of some 55 cetaceans even if the legislation is passed by the Commons.

The hope of many activists is that some or all of the marine mammals currently in captivity in Canada eventually would be moved to an open water seaside sanctuary in either B.C. or Nova Scotia.

The bill would also prohibit the importing of cetaceans, or their sperm, tissue cultures or embryos.

Holler had an ally in Conservative Manitoba Sen. Don Plett, who has steadfastly opposed the Senate bill. Plett continually sought to put off a vote through the creative use of some parliamentary procedure.

The Senate fisheries committee, of which Plett was a member, studied the bill for some eight months over 17 committee meetings with more than 30 witnesses — considerably more time than a Senate public bill typically spends under scrutiny at committee.

Senate passes shark fin ban

The Senate passed another animal welfare bill Tuesday: S-238, which will ban the import and export of shark fin products.

Conservative Nova Scotia Sen. Michael MacDonald, who tabled the bill, has said the practice has done vast damage to the world’s shark population — which has declined nearly 80 per cent over the last 50 years.

Canada is the world’s third largest importer of shark fins, surpassed only by mainland China and Hong Kong, where shark fin soup is a popular delicacy among the wealthy. In 2015 alone, Canada imported over 144,000 kilograms of shark fins.

“Tens of millions of sharks are left to die every year for nothing but the prestige associated with a bowl of shark fin soup,” MacDonald said.

That bill will now be sent to the Commons for further debate among MPs.

When animals are treated like garbage …

österreichische Flagge

The association http://www.RespekTiere.at (from Austria) had a mission in Bulgaria.
The goal was the castration of strays that live in Bulgaria, as well as in other Eastern countries, under catastrophic conditions.
Thomas Putzgruber, the club’s chairman, tells us a story.

Tom Wildgruber jpg

“Today we would like to tell you a small but representative story of the normal madness in the Balkan country!
We had found a puppy somewhere in Breznik; the poor one ran alone and apparently disoriented through the streets, unnoticed by the people around.
Too often, such a scene is repeated, the sight is too commonplace, so that no one would only pay attention to such a fate. The puppy could not be caught easily, no, it showed life spirits, and only by a trick finally managed to hold the puppy and bring it into the transport box in the car.

bulgarische welpe

As we started to leave, a man, wrapped in filthy clothes and supported by crutches, came toward us; He indicated that he also had dogs in the garden, which we should also take with him. So we followed him; We saw a house ruin, a concrete concrete building and decaying wood, badly damaged by the elements, and a littered garden strewn with garbage. In one corner of the evil chaos, old bread was laid, infested with mold – apparently the dining place for the dogs. They probably never had anything else.

In the middle of the Inferno – a white puppy in the most terrible condition! His body a skeleton, every single bone was distinguished by the taut, parchmental skin. His steely blue eyes seemed to ask for help, but his gestures did not want to reveal any weakness. What a stubborn courage the little guy possessed! Snarling, gritting his teeth, he scurried away for the moment, pursued by me through a dark corridor covered with broken glass and plastic garbage behind the house;

Attention was required, the sweetness was obviously sick, yet he growled from the bottom of his throat – you should never be bitten in action, in this case, especially not! Rabies is still a topic in Bulgaria, other diseases anyway.
But in the end we were able to hold him by the back of his neck; the puppy now used the last strength, wanted to free himself necessarily; why? we wondered, why did not he just give himself up – it could not be any worse for him anyway, no matter what or where.

Perhaps he just wanted his peace, dying in the hope of letting his soul glide over the bridge somewhere; …

Now the son of the man had come; a boy 10, 12 years old, in the morning away from school, with a cigarette in his hand. He noticed dry, a second puppy would be in the garden, we should also look for that.
But what we found before was a dead pup lying in the grass; disposed of like rubbish, left lying exactly where he had done his last breaths. Ignorance, no one cried for him. A fate among hundreds of thousands …

tote bulgarische welpe

Then we discovered the wanted; he, too, tried to hide in panic-stricken eyes, to dig into the grass, to disappear behind the bushes, to become invisible in the garbage. However, when he found himself discovered, he also showed his bare teeth, brave as a proud warrior, despite the bottomless inferiority no sign of abandonment. Once more the poor man escaped, but now he was stuck in the proverbial clamp – a rusted iron plate restricted his escape route and therefore he had to approach us directly. For this, however, he already lacked the strength. As thin as his sibling, with a severely injured forepaw;

Tierärtzte in Bulgarien

Had we not been there by chance, the three would have died as they had lived; Left completely alone, the mother probably killed, left behind in a world she does not love. Her life would be extinguished like the snow on the southern slopes at the beginning of spring. Nobody would have noticed their fate, too often the same tragedy happens every day.

It is up to us what we learn from such stories; but it is certain that only castration projects prevent such animal suffering. Only castrations can change the course of events, perhaps eventually overcome the misery.

Dealing with stray animals is a shame of humanity, perhaps the greatest of all.

Let us all help to make up for at least a fraction of what we have done to them!
In this sense: please do not buy dogs from the breeder, at least as long as not, as such tragedies almost directly on our doorstep play. Every adopted dog is a rescued life, every one bred takes his place away from one who would need nothing more than a home. Please think about it!

Tiny puppy found taking final breaths saved

This little girl was about to die. She lay unconscious with the labored breathing that usually comes just before death. Our rescue team rushed her to Animal Aid where we discovered she was in shock with severe dehydration, probably caused by untreated diarrhea. We immediately started her on IV fluids but she remained almost comatose and slept through the night. We weren’t sure we could save her, and wondered what the following day might bring. And wow, were we in for a surprise. Meet Lilly after just 24 hours.

Saving a Mama dog who risked her life for her puppies

We’ve all heard stories about mothers risking their lives for their babies–but now we’ve seen it with our own eyes. Angelina is one of the gentlest, sweetest dogs we’ve ever met. But don’t try messin’ with her little pod of baby angels because she’s done everything in her power to protect them. She became dangerously injured in the process-a wound that tore mammary tissue from her belly and a huge laceration on her neck. That’s what it took to make sure each and every one of her babies was safe. Angelina will be spayed when her young’uns are weaned. In the meantime, she’s going to be one busy lady. Meet our beautiful hero today.

Street dog having violent seizure rescued

We got a call that a street dog was flailing in the road having a violent seizure. Luckily our ambulance was only moments away and when we arrived, she was still having the seizure. The seizure was probably caused by a trauma-maybe a car accident. We stabilized her with anti-seizure and other medicines, and so began her six week recovery of her ability to balance and walk. Meet beautiful Stella …

EU: Industrial Farming Budget Is Now Being Prepared. Add Your Voice To Make Things Better – Please Sign The Open Letter.

EU- Flagge

Industrial farming kills bees with pesticides, over-fertilises our fields, and tortures animals in factory farms. And yet, it is subsidised with €59 billion every year from our taxes. [1] What more? This is the biggest part of the EU budget! [2]

Right now, politicians are discussing how to redistribute this money. Will future subsidies go to farmers who feed us healthy food and treat animals humanely? Or will it remain as bad as it is now?

Thousands of us, farmers and consumers, from Malta to Aarhus, from Warsaw to Madrid, will come together next weekend in days of action. We’ll protest, we’ll cook sustainable food for the public, we’ll teach about sustainable farming and we’ll demand a U-turn away from harmful farming practices.

Today we’re launching an open letter, which we will publish in a press release on Friday to open the action days. We need a great big boom for the start: 100,000 signatures, in order to show the media and decision-makers that we, Europeans, care about our food and our farming. Please sign now.

farm16

I want to be one of the 100,000 – I’ll sign the open letter

At last, some of the European Ministers of Agriculture are realising the disaster happening before our eyes: insects, pollinators of our plants and nourishment for birds, are vanishing. [3] The German government, for instance, is discussing a program to protect insects. The Ministry for the Environment wants to spend €100 million per year on the program (great!), but the Minister of Agriculture is not in favour of it. [4] €100 million is a lot of money, but it’s a tiny amount compared to €59 billion that industrial farming gets from the EU. Instead of taking decisive action, they are spending their time bickering! This sort of thing is happening all over the EU.

But this arguing also shows we have an opportunity. Some politicians are open to our call for better farming. But others still aren’t listening. That is why we chose a pot and a spoon as symbols for the campaign: We will bang one against another and make enough noise to be heard.

FF14

In another three weeks we will repeat our action, this time in Brussels. We will show up in front of the building where EU Ministers of Agriculture will meet to decide about the future of our food. We’ll bring vegetables, pots, pans and cutlery with us. We’ll cook for the politicians, we’ll make noise, and we’ll deliver the demands of European citizens for a U-turn against harmful industrial agriculture.

Sign the open letter

Agricultural policy is a hotly contested issue because of the massive amounts of money involved. The proposed EU budget for the next seven years provides far too much money for industrial agriculture and far too little money for more sustainable farming and environmental protection. It’s time for governments to put the public interest before the interest of big business.

FF2

The past year has shown us that we can prevail against the lobby of the big agricultural industry. Just last year, our community and our partners managed to cut the length of the license for the toxic pesticide glyphosate down to only five years, when EU politicians wanted 15!

Your signature shows that we care about food and farming: We want our daily bread to be healthy, we want our farmers to prosper and we want animals to be treated humanely.

PS: Whenever we eat something, we depend on the agricultural industry. Our food can only be as good as the agricultural model with which it’s produced. For us and for our environment, let’s grow our food in ways that reduce waste, reduce the amount of toxic chemicals, and promote a resilient and diverse food and farming system.

EU: Live Animal Transport -Reg 1/2005 Has Failed The Animals From The Start.

We have personally been involved with live animal transport issues in Europe for 25+ years.

We know that Reg 1/2005 has failed the animals from the very start – and so you could say that the EU Commission has also been failing animals in transport from the very start.

To see a bit about our own past involvement with the live animal transport business. Please check out our info at  https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-us/  – scroll down quite  a way to see our own battles with a useless EU.

Here is a message from Silvia at Animals Angels.. who are based in Germany.

We want to thank Silvia for her info and the video which we have repeated below.  I am sure you will find it interesting.

It goes without saying that we give our full support to Angels and as individual welfare groups right across the EU, we work hard to expose the failures of the legislation 1/2005.

Please watch the video and see how the mighty EU Commission is failing anima;ls in transport.

Regards Mark.

Silvia says:

Dear Mark,

I hope this email finds you well.

On the 6th of September this year, we presented the premiere of a new film of Animals´ Angels in Brussels, at the EU Parliament. The video summarizes 10 years spent on the roads collecting data about the conditions of transported animals, after having interviewed some experts. The aim was to make the point of 10 years of application of Regulation EC 1/2005, analyzing what has been achieved and what remains to do. The final balance is very bitter. It is crystal clear that the original intention of the Council of EU has been betrayed. As you know, too many animals continue to travel crammed in trucks and ships over longer and longer distances. Animals´ Angels asked the EU Commission to take a stand and be faithful to its duties as “the guardian of EU laws”. A limit must be set to profit.

To know more, please watch our recently published video “10 years of Regulation EC 1/2005 – Animals’ Angels field experience 2007-2017”: www.animals-angels.de/10-jahre

More than a million EU citizens already expressed their opposition to long animal transports already twice. Pressure of public opinion is a powerful means to demand EU institutions and governments a change. Please, help us spreading knowledge about animal transports.

Kindest regards,

Silvia

Need Animal Help But Unsure Where To Go ? -Then Check Out WAN For A Start !

World Animal Net (WAN) is a site which we use quite regularly – as it provides links to animal welfare associations based in just about every country of the globe.  We have found it very useful.

Here is the main link –  http://worldanimal.net/directory/search-wan-directory

As you can see; you can do a search in a couple of ways – we suggest that going directly to a country is the best way.  You can literally just select the country you wish to gets results for from the drop down, and then press the ‘search’ box.  You should then be given all the organisations for welfare groups in that country.

Just for example; today we have had several visits from Greece; so what better than to use this as an example.

So we simply go to the main link

http://worldanimal.net/directory/search-wan-directory

Select ‘Greece’ from the drop down list of nations.

Then hit the ‘Search’ button.

Then we are given a full listing of all the Greek organisations which can help with animal welfare.  The link to this is given here:

http://worldanimal.net/directory/search-wan-directory/results?country=84&fanda=0

So a good and very useful tool no matter where you are located in the world; if you need animal help.  You may find you get a lot more results than you expected – Great !

Have a play around with it and make sure you keep WAN as a source in your directory / contacts list.

Regards Mark
