Our drones took to the skies once again, and this time we uncovered massive deforestation in the Amazon. Even more shocking? Meat production is to blame for this devastation.
The Amazon rainforest is one of the world’s treasures and likely the most important natural place on Earth. But it is being destroyed at a rate of four football fields per minute.
Why? According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, cattle ranching accounts for 80 percent of Brazilian Amazon deforestation.
Soy crops are another cause of deforestation in the Amazon and in other extremely important biomes, such as the Brazilian savanna. Few people know that 79 percent of soybeans are used as feed for chickens, pigs, and fish, and not for human consumption.
Destruction of the Amazon rainforest has worldwide consequences. If we don’t protect it now, the future of life on Earth will be at risk.
The good news is that you can help. The best way for everyone to help stop the destruction of the Amazon rainforest is to choose plant-based foods. It’s as easy as swapping animal products for the delicious, satisfying plant-based versions that are growing in popularity.
