Dear Mark,

We’re very pleased to let you know that the Scottish Government has announced a series of animal welfare commitments this week. The Minister for Rural Affairs and the Natural Environment, Mairi Gougen MSP revealed the Scottish Government will be introducing CCTV in abattoirs, strengthening the fox hunting ban, and increasing the maximum sentences for cruelty to animals. Other commitments include legislation to regulate animal sanctuaries and re-homing centres, and licensing dog, cat and rabbit breeding.

In her opening statement, Mairi Gougen MSP commended groups like OneKind for their hard work stating that she was “heartened and impressed by their commitment.” You can watch the full statement here.

CCTV in Slaughterhouses

Following our campaigning, we’re thrilled that the Scottish Government has committed to introducing compulsory video recording in all relevant areas of slaughterhouses in Scotland. We launched our campaign for mandatory CCTV in slaughterhouses in 2016 and worked closely with Animal Aid on it. We presented a 10,000-signature petition to the Scottish Government, held a briefing event for MSPs, and our supporters responded to the government’s consultation on the issue .  This is a fantastic move, and we’d like to thank everyone who supported us on this campaign. We couldn’t have done it without you all!

Fox Hunting

Significantly on the issue of fox hunting, the Scottish Government will reduce the maximum number of dogs that can be used to flush a wild mammal towards a gun for shooting to two, and intends to discourage trail hunting, which is used in England as a pretext for hunting foxes.

The Scottish Government intends to implement the recommendations made by Lord Bonomy in his review of the Protection of Wild Mammals (Scotland) Act 2002. These include improved definitions of hunting, removal of the word “deliberately” from the main offence, tightening up on the drafting of exceptions and reversing the burden of proof so that an individual is required to show that an exception applies.

Speaking on the announcement, OneKind’s Director Bob Elliot said:

“At first sight we welcome the reduction of the number of dogs permitted for flushing to two, but obviously we remain concerned at the proposal to license greater numbers in some cases. There will be no gain for animal welfare if this provides a new loophole for fox hunts to exploit, although we entirely accept the Minister’s intention is to prevent this happening.

“The changes will make the legislation more effective and enforceable, but ultimately we support a full ban on all use of dogs to chase and kill sentient wild mammals. We continue look forward to the proposed Member’s Bill expected from Scottish Green MSP, Alison Johnstone, and very much welcome the Minister’s acknowledgment of those proposals.”

Animal Welfare Commission

We’ve been pressing for the establishment of an Animal Welfare Commission for Scotland to provide expert advice on the welfare of domesticate and wild animals in Scotland, so we’re delighted that it has been announced by the Scottish Government. We expect the commission, which will be the first in the UK, to be founded on the recognition that animals are sentient beings and therefore there is a duty on the government and its agencies to pay full regard to their welfare.

Overall, we’re delighted by the commitments but of course there’s more that we want to call for. We’ll be looking for an outright ban on fox hunting and a full ban on the use of snares. We’ll also be calling for regulating on the use of animals in displays, like reindeer at Christmas, and pushing for a ban on mountain hare culling and continue to fight the welfare issues concerning the intensive farming of salmon .

Yours,

Sarah

Toraja’s bloody death dance!

indonesia

Indonesia Sulawesi:  Part of the sick ritual of the funeral ceremony is the killing of water buffaloes.

indonesien-sulawesi-tana-toraja-bebo-dorf-toraja-beerdigung-tod-kampfe-rituell-geschlachteten-buffel-bj770j

The higher the reputation of the dead, the more water buffalo (the white are considered the most valuable) must be sacrificed at the festival. The water buffalo are a symbol of power and wealth.

Funerals are traditionally held at a special ceremony place the “Rante”.

toraja beerdigung

The stronger the person who died, the more buffaloes are killed on the day of death. Buffalo carcasses, including their heads, are usually strung on a field, waiting for their owner, who is in “sleep phase”.

torajat ceremoniejpg

Torajans believe that the deceased will need the buffalo to make the journey, and that they will arrive faster in the sky / paradise if they have many buffaloes. The murder of dozens of water buffaloes and hundreds of pigs with a machete is the culmination of the elaborate death celebration with dance and music and young people catching spurting blood in long bamboo canes. buffalo sacrifice

Buffalo and pig shit, blood and offal cover the floor.
The smell of burnt hair is in the air.

Some of the slaughtered animals are given by guests as “gifts”, which are carefully recorded as they are considered debts of the family of the deceased.

At the funeral today is often a Christian priest as well as an Aluk priest (To-Minaa) present.

The higher the reputation of the deceased, the more buffalo and pigs must be sacrificed at his funeral ceremony.

And then there are the tourists who film the poor animals in their suffering..

For every religion, the animal is one thing; only exploitation, breeding, hunting and eating object, and man is the mortal enemy of the animal, his devil. For every religion, the beast is created by God to serve man, to be useful to him.
Today, and everywhere in the world, we are murderous and pitiless with the animals; all that remains is to hope for a growing rethinking of rationality and empathy for our fellow creatures, especially because there is no rational reason for such criminal rituals.

My best regards to all, Venus

UK: ‘Natural England’ (?) Issue Licences To Kill Multiple Red-listed Bird Species – Is This ‘Natural’ ??

England

Full article:

Licences granted to kill multiple Red-listed species

Natural England and Natural Resources Wales have given the go-ahead for Red-listed species such as Eurasian Curlew, Eurasian Skylark and House Sparrow to be shot.

The full list of birds for which killing permits have been issued includes several other scarcely believable species, including Blackbird, Eurasian Bullfinch, European Robin, Great Tit, Northern Lapwing and Red Kite.

Officials from both organisations have said the permits were handed out for air safety, public health and safety and to prevent serious damage to livestock, and it’s likely thousands of birds have so far been killed under the licenses.

WAV Comment – So suddenly birds are a public health and livestock concern ! –  The Brits are not going to take this easy and accept it.  We think quite rightly there are going to be serious responses to this action.  Can we suggest that ‘Natural England’ change their name to ‘Farmers Friend Natural Killers’ – going against nature !

England: Chris Packham; Wildlife Campaigner and Broadcaster; Becomes CIWF Patron.

England

From Compassion In World Farming (CIWF), London:

We are delighted to announce that naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham has joined us as a Patron. The popular TV presenter, conservationist and photographer has been a wildlife enthusiast since he was a small boy. Chris has become a well-known champion for wildlife, fronting TV shows including, The Really Wild Show, BBC Springwatch and Autumnwatch.

A compassionate campaigner

Chris is also a very active campaigner spearheading The People’s Manifesto for Wildlife and leading the way with his new London rally #ThePeoplesWalkForWildlife – on which our CEO, Philip Lymbery, attended in September, along with thousands of others.

Passionate about finding a better way for us all to take action to protect our wildlife and the wider environment, Chris is a wonderful advocate to have on board and encourage others to help make a difference.

“There’s an old expression ‘you are what you eat’. I think we need to change it to ‘what you eat says who you are’ because now each and every one of our diets needs a critical rethink,”  said Chris, on becoming our Patron.

“From our health perspective, from the point of animal welfare, to the impact farming has on wildlife and to the way that our food choices shape the environment of the entire planet. Thinking about eating no, less or better quality meat or dairy needs to be on our agenda. As does a better understanding of the way modern farming practices are shaping our world and how we can work together with farmers to improve these for everything and everyone’s benefit. Young people in particular need to re-connect to the nature of food and learn the true cost of its production and food labelling, so we can make informed choices must be significantly improved. All this is why I am pleased to be a Patron for CIWF, a body calling for reforms based on science, best practice and compassion.”

Joining the fight to end factory farming

It is fantastic to have such a respected and dedicated Patron supporting us in the fight to end factory farming.

Chris spoke in depth about his concerns regarding industrial scale farming and its impact on the natural world when interviewed for Philip’s blog and Big Table podcast recently.

Philip said: “Chris is a wonderful advocate to have on board. We look forward to him supporting our fight to end factory farming.”

Sun Bear ‘Aurora’ – Rescued In December 2018 – Update.

AA logo 1

On December 15th 2018 we did a post regarding the rescue of Bile bear named ‘Aurora’.

https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2018/12/15/viet-nam-aurora-has-been-rescued-by-animals-asia-big-changes-a-new-life-with-people-who-love-and-care-for-her/

https://www.animalsasia.org/intl/media/news/news-archive/rescued-sun-bear-aurora-recovers-from-health-check-and-makes-herself-at-home.html

So it is wonderful to see that Aurora is now doing so well; just a few weeks after her rescue.

Now there is an update from Animals Asia.

As you can see in the video below; she is doing really well in conditions so different to those from which she was rescued.

watch the video

Here is what Animals Asia have to say:

Rescued sun bear Aurora recovers from health check and makes herself at home

Just a few weeks on from her rescue, Aurora is in good health and busy exploring the largest space she has ever known.

For sun bear Aurora, the new year has brought with it an entirely new and wonderful life.

Having spent 15 years in a tiny, barren cage as an exotic pet, Aurora was freed by rescuers in December and brought 1,500 kilometres to sanctuary.

In the weeks since, this gentle sun bear has experienced more kindness and enjoyed more natural behaviour than in all the years since she was poached from the wild as a cub.

She has moved to an indoor den to complete her 45-day quarantine period and her new space is packed with enrichment and climbing structures.

Animals Asia Vietnam Bear and Vet Team Director Heidi Quine said:

“For a bear whose every waking moment has been entirely bereft of stimulation for over a decade, Aurora’s new surroundings must feel palatial. Sun bears love to climb and for the first time in her life, this is something Aurora is free to do. She’s experienced huge changes over the last few weeks, but she is a brave soul and is already very trusting of her new carers.”

Aurora has also received a thorough examination by vets who believe she has a small gallstone and suffers from arthritis. Thankfully, neither condition requires surgery or medication currently and will be monitored closely as future treatment will likely be required.

Another area of concern during her rescue was the state of Aurora’s teeth. Having been fed an unsuitable diet for years, there was a large build-up of tartar which unchecked would cause serious disease and pain. Thankfully, the nutritious and crunchy vegetables and fruit Aurora now enjoys as part of her daily diet have already massively improved her condition.

Heidi said:

“When Aurora got back to her den after the health check she used the straw to build herself a huge comfy nest, just as a sun bear would in the wild. These are exactly the kind of natural behaviours Aurora has been denied all her life, and to see her simply begin to be a bear again fills us with the greatest joy.”

During the remainder of her 45-day quarantine period, Aurora will continue to build her strength, while her carers will work to earn her trust. After quarantine is complete, it is hoped Aurora will  be integrated with some of the other eleven sun bears at the sanctuary and will be free to enjoy a large outdoor enclosure.

Not directly associated with AA; but please look at this video relating to Vietnamese bile bears and the daily suffering they endure to milk them for bile:

Italy: Undercover video about the “milk machines”!

italien

Rome: Involuntary activists of the Italian animal welfare organization Essere Animali managed to document the sad life of the Italian dairy cows. The two committed animal rights activists filmed the entire life cycle of the dairy cows, from insemination to the treatment of calves and the milking of cows. What they saw was scary!

When milk and dairy products are advertised on Italian television, happy cows grazing on a green meadow in a beautiful landscape are almost always shown. The reality is a completely different one. Of the more than 2,200,000 dairy cows in Italy, the very few ever see green grass. The vast majority of them must be crammed together in confined spaces in dark stables their miserable existence as a dairy cow, until they – when the milk yield decreases – after a few years “cleared away”.

kuh in italien 3The video starts with insemination. To guarantee a constant milk production and to be able to “produce” a calf annually, the cows are inseminated regularly. As a result, the pregnant cows can be milked twice a day and 300 days a year.

The hidden cameras also show the separation of freshly born calves from their mothers. A cow desperately calls for her calf. The calf is brutally separated from her mother and taken away with an excavator. Then they tie a rope to his leg and put it in a tight box for several weeks. If it is a male calf, it is fed with a low-iron diet to obtain a light meat and brought to the butcher after six months. Overall, male calves are regarded as a by-product of intensive dairy farming and are therefore less valuable than dairy cows. The video shows several painfully dying and dead calves. But if it is a female calf, it becomes a dairy cow.

kuh in italien 4jpg

In order to avoid injuries, the calves are burned the roots of the horns. Although this extremely painful procedure, according to law, may only be performed by a veterinarian and under anesthesia, this practice was used by simple staff and without anesthesia in the stable screened by animal rights activists. In addition, the activists were able to document many cases of violence against the animals. The cows were kicked, pushed and even beaten with iron bars. Breeding of dairy cows designed for maximum milk production – a dairy cow of the Holstein cattle breed today gives up to 28 liters of milk, in 1985 it was only 17 liters – is increasingly affecting the welfare of the animals.

More and more often, the animals suffer injuries to the claws or slip on the wet concrete floor of the stables, breaking their tendons and legs. By law, injured and suffering cows may not be repealed, but would have to be killed immediately, but the employees often let the animals suffer for days before the “mercy shot” for lack of time.

kuh in italien 2jpg

Although the dairy cows could live up to 20 years, they are “exchanged” after four to five years of life as a result of slowly declining milk yield and handed over to butchers and meat processing companies.

Given the sad fate of the dairy cows as well as the brutal and sometimes illegal behavior of the employees, there is not much left of the image of happy cows, who are happy to give milk, and who are carefully cared for by the advertising.

kuh realitätn

Animal welfare organization hopes that consumers will reconsider their consumption of milk and dairy products produced under such dire conditions.

Whether the video can shake up the consumer?

https://www.suedtirolnews.it/italien/milchmaschinen-gequaelt-geschlagen-ausgepumpt-und-umgebracht?

My comment: The meat consumer likes to “stun” himself.

We do not learn to feel anything anymore. Even after such documentation which- fortunately! – has been shown by public service broadcasters in recent years, we develop mechanisms such as rejection, oppression or even apathy.

We can not say more: how do the animals that give us milk live? Where are they?
We read and experience how animals live today: in huge factory farms, under torture, psychic stress, suffering until they are transported to the slaughterhouse. In a way, we know the truth quite well!
But the most effective way to evade this reality is to deny it. That’s why we tell ourselves that such pictures are just the exception, we buy organic milk from happy cows and organic meat from meadows cows.
And so we tell ourselves, there is no problem, so we do not have to make any thoughts and we are not responsible for our consumption, that is, for our actions.

And that’s why, we no longer see the cow, which is transported by crane, on our plate!

My best regards, Venus
