Silk is not fine, is pain

Silk Cocoons on Leaf

Silk is an animal fiber that consists mainly of proteins. The material is made in small glands in the mouth of the silk spinner. The caterpillar wraps itself in and forms a protective cocoon around her body. Then she pupates and turns into a butterfly.

In 2014, about 178,000 tonnes of silk were produced worldwide – mostly in China, India or Uzbekistan. If you now realize that about 50,000 silkworms are killed for a silk dress, it’s worth taking a closer look.

Kimono-Seide

In order for the silk to be used economically, the silk caterpillar was domesticated in China over 5,000 years ago. The result was the mulberry spinner Bombyx mori. It has been bred for high performance, feeds mainly on mulberry leaves and is not viable in nature as it is extremely sensitive to changes in its environment, such as temperature fluctuations. In order to be able to control the animals better, their flying abilities were also bred away. In addition to the mulberry spinner, other butterfly species such as the Japanese oak silk moth are used, but their cocoons make up only a small part of the world’s traded silk.

-cocon-seide-seidenraupe-maulbaerblaetter-1170x658

How is silk made?

The silk moth is the main producer. More precisely, it is his larva. She is tiny shortly after birth and then eats the leaves of the mulberry tree in only four weeks (and four molts) 14 000 times her hatching weight.

She is fat like a finger before she starts pupating. Instead, it produces a thread in its oral glands, which consists of fibrin, a horn-like protein. She sticks it to sericin, a glue. First, she weaves a net between branches and blades of grass, anchoring her cocoon, which she spins out of a single thread that can be rolled out up to four kilometers long.

-kokon-seide-seidenraupe-1170x878

In this cocoon she rests – and normally after about 18 days a woolly white-haired butterfly would hatch. But this does not happen in the silk breeding, because when hatching, he would bite through the endless silk thread and tand break the thread, which no one silk collector wants. He wants the thread as a whole.

To prevent this, the cocoons, together with the living dolls, are exposed to dry in the sun or thrown into boiling water. You can watch how the animals crawl around in their cocoons and try to escape death.

A few animals may hatch from their cocoons to mate and lay new eggs, which are needed for the offspring. Superfluous eggs are destroyed or frozen. Male animals are often stored in freezers and brought out only for fertilization. When they are no longer efficient, they are disposed of like garbage after mating. The dolls killed in the water bath are also disposed of and eaten in some countries like Korea.

The worldwide silk industry

Most of the animals are bred today in China, India and Uzbekistan. After the silk moths have been killed, the silk threads are rolled up by machine or by hand to a yarn and lavishly cleaned and freed from the natural glue residue of the silk moth. After that, the silk is dyed, processed and sold as clothing, accessories or rugs in stores around the world. Since about 15 animals are killed for one gram of silk, this means the death of more than 2.8 trillion caterpillars annually with a world-wide production of 192,692 tons of silk (as of 2016). Although the production of silk costs so many animals its life, it accounts for only 0.2% of all textile fibers, making it terrifyingly inefficient.

Raupe-Seide-Kokon-jpg

Can silk moths feel pain?

So far, the ability to suffer from invertebrates is poorly understood – the simplified answer is: We still do not know exactly if and how caterpillars and butterflies feel pain. However, it is known that some insects show pain-avoiding behavior and evade negative stimuli. Hummer was also denied pain for a long time. Today we know that lobsters feel very well when they are thrown into boiling water. Due to the increasing knowledge, the pain sensation of invertebrate animals, such as insects, it is our responsibility to protect the silk moth from suffering and pain.

Alternatives to silk

Anyone who opposes the use of silk products does not have to do without the qualities of silk. Almost all textile and fashion manufacturers offer microfibers such as nylon or polyester, which perfectly mimic the sheen of silk. The flora also has a lot to offer.

Anyone who opposes the use of silk products does not have to do without the qualities of silk. Meanwhile, there are a number of fibers that wonderfully mimic silk in softness, smoothness and thermal qualities. Lyocell is one of these, micro modal as well, or rayon, soya silk and agave or bamboo silk.
Pima cotton is particularly fine and convinces with its shimmering surface. Kapok, agave fiber and soy-based can also be processed into delicate fabrics. Eco-friendly Lyocell fibers such as Tencel or Modal, which feel light and soft on the skin, are also trendy.
In contrast to animal fibers, these materials also do not attract clothes moths and carpet beetles, which feed on the protein fibers of the silk and perforate the textiles.

Biotechnological processes even allow the imitation of the silk protein. Companies such as Spiber, Amsilk or BoldThreads make the silk protein of yeast cells or bacteria and thus copy the properties of animal silk. In the end, this creates a silk yarn that can be used not only for clothing, but also for medical purposes and many other areas. The procedures are completely free of animals and could save many billiards of silk spinners in the near future.

https://www.peta.de/seide

My comment: Silk is the only textile fiber for which live creatures must be killed in order to gain them, namely the caterpillars of the silk moth.
And I have no doubt that animals that find death in boiling water feel pain.
Whether they are lobsters, cocoon dolls or pigs.
They are enslaved, exploited, cooked alive because a two-legged animal wants to have his kimono from China silk.
It is high time we, the human animals, finally civilize ourselves.

USA: The California fur ban just barely passed yesterday in its first Senate vote. To win in the next Senate vote (in 2 weeks), we’ll need your help.

The California fur ban just barely passed yesterday in its first Senate vote.

We needed 5 yes votes out of the 9-person committee, and we were stalled at 3 without much time left. A few of us went around the State Capitol lobbying the remaining Senators and even chased the Senate Majority Leader down the hall to speak to him in time.

With just minutes left, we got the last two votes we needed, and the Senate Majority Leader threw up his arms in support when the victory was announced!

When the votes are this close, a single action can tip the scale on either side.

The fur industry has hired a new lobbyist and they’re going to extreme measures to block the bill. We need your help more than we’ve ever needed it before. We’ve uncovered a disturbing new tactic the industry is using — one that almost killed the fur ban yesterday. And to win in the next Senate vote (in 2 weeks), we’ll need your help.

Can you make a post on social media with #MakeFurHistory to show your support for the bill? You can also direct your friends and family to sign up at FurIsHistory.org and they’ll learn more about how they can help, too.

We’ll also be sharing more updates on the fur ban in the July member call. If you want to become a member and join these more in-depth monthly discussions, you can become a member here.

Again good news: hunting tower destroyed (Germany)

Germany

Received anonymously from Underground Badger Syndicate:

Whilst wandering through the Hambach Forest this morning, we noticed a brand new hunting tower had appeared right next to the tragic carcass of one that had previously been rendered unusable. It seems the local hunt scum are a little slow to pick up on the message – we will not allow you to murder the inhabitants of Hambi.

Germany_hunting_turm zestört pg

We removed the salt block used to lure the hunted towards the guns and stashed it far away. The legs of the tower were severed using some fancy new hand saws which made toppling the thing a fucking breeze.

After further dismantling the wreckage, we decided that such valuable building material was too good to be left behind, so carried away plenty of stuff to be re-appropriated in the forest occupation. That roofing material is gonna be fucking sweeet on the treehouse.

Hunt scum, be warned! We know every millimetre of this forest and we will find and destroy all your trash.

Human baby found in the trash container

us-flagge_ml

A man was shocked to discover an abandoned newborn left alone in a plastic bag in a wooded area near his home in Georgia. Police body cameras captured the moment the child was rescued.

The good Samaritan found the child, nicknamed ‘Baby India’, after investigating strange cries coming from a forest in Forsyth County, 40 miles north of Atlanta. The find immediately prompted a call to police.

Video shows astonished sheriff’s deputies apologizing to the “precious” little bundle as they delicately remove her from the plastic bag in which she was abandoned.

It is not clear how long the child was left outside, but she appears to be covered in blood and still has her umbilical cord uncut.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office shared footage of the rescue operation on Tuesday “in hopes to receive credible information on the identity of Baby India” and to “find closure in this case.”

Alan Ragetz, who found the baby, told WSB-TV he was persuaded by his daughters to investigate the crying in the woods.

“We went down, pulled it up, there was a poor little baby wrapped in a plastic bag,” he said. “She was alive, she was crying, so we figured that was a good sign.”

It remains unclear what prompted the mother to abandon her child in such a state, even though Georgia state law allows residents to leave babies up to 30 days old at a medical facility without fear of prosecution. Police say they continue to search for the mother or any of the child’s relatives.

Fortunately, after her ‘second birth’ of sorts, the newborn is now “thriving,” and has been placed in the care of the Georgia Family Department.

https://www.rt.com/usa/462677-newborn-baby-saved-bag/

My comment: And then we ask ourselves how our conspecifics could throw animals into the trash if they do the same with their own children …

Hunde in Müllkontainer_n

I see no difference in the extent of the crime when people dispose of the newborn puppies in the trash, and others do the same with a newborn child.

But our society ignores and lets the first crime go unpunished and condemns and punishes the second by law.

The offender who abandoned his child must expect a heavy sentence.
The perpetrator who abandoned animals can count on a small monetary penalty.

Human animals have rights from birth.
Non-human animals are considered as things, they have no rights, nowhere.

Dear Mark,

Today, my father Dr. Michael W. Fox is traveling to Brainerd, Minnesota, to join hundreds of other wolf advocates to testify on behalf of Project Coyote before the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in opposition to the Trump Administration’s proposal to strip all remaining federal protections for wolves across the lower 48 states (except for Mexican wolves in the Southwest).

As a veterinarian, canid ethologist, bioethicist and author of more than 40 books – including The Soul of the Wolf my father will speak to the many values of wolves. Read his testimony here.

Project Coyote Science Advisory Board Member Dr. Adrian Treves is part of a five-member peer review panel appointed by the USFWS that analyzed the proposal to delist the gray wolf. He and several other peer reviewers found the proposal “chock full of scientific errors,” stating “it looks like they decided to delist and then they compiled all the evidence that they thought supported that decision.” Read more here and here.

Talking Points:

Your comments can simply state: “I am in opposition to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s proposed rule to remove Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in the lower 48 states. I urge you to reconsider this proposed rule and to instead develop a national wolf recovery plan for wolves that reflects their intrinsic value and the myriad ecological, aesthetic, and economic benefits the species provides to our communities and ecosystems.”

For maximum impact, however, we encourage you to personalize your comments. Here are some talking points you may consider incorporating:

  •  Continuing Endangered Species Act protections for wolves is necessary for the species to fully recover. Federal protections saved gray wolves from extinction following decades of persecution – and the species is still recovering, currently occupying only a fraction of their historic range.
  • The proposed rule would transfer authority over wolves to state wildlife management agencies, which historically have shown little interest in preserving wolves. These state agencies have catered to special interest groups who seek to kill wolves for trophies or entertainment, or on the misguided belief that killing wolves protects livestock or increases deer and elk populations.
  •  Wolves are vital to healthy ecosystems. Benefits wolves provide include increasing biodiversity by keeping large herbivores such as deer from overgrazing habitats and maintaining the health of prey animals such as deer by culling the sick members from the heard, including animals suffering from Chronic Wasting Disease.
  •  The best available, peer-reviewed science demonstrates that killing wolves will not protect livestock or increase populations of game species like deer or elk. Wildlife management decisions should be based on ethics and sound science, not fear and misunderstandings.
  •  The vast majority of Americans are wildlife watchers who prefer to view wolves in their natural habitat – preserved and treated with respect. Allowing wolves to return to their historic range and thrive will provide far more benefits to our economy than allowing a tiny minority of the population to extirpate these iconic animals from our landscape.

Do You Remember the Spray Foam, Dumped In Garbage Kitten ? – Good News Update -Forever Home Found.

UPDATE: Kitten Cruelly Encased in Spray Foam Has Found a Forever Home

Update – you may remember that in May we published an article about a little kitten that had been covered in foam and dumped in the trash:

https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2019/05/29/petitions-support-when-you-can-they-do-make-a-difference/

Well we have some good news that needs sharing:

A kitten who nearly died after being encased in spray foam and dumped in the garbage has not only made a full recovery, but also found his forever home.

A garbage collector from Washington County, Oregon, discovered the kitten — now named Lucky McFoamy — in a trash can during his rounds. Lucky could barely move as his little face and body were encased in hardened spray foam, yet he somehow managed to cry out and alert the worker to his presence.

After the Hillsboro Vet Clinic cleaned Lucky up and gave him a clean bill of health, he moved on to the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter, run by Washington County Animal Services.

Now, Lucky is heading to his new home with delighted guardian Denise.

“Denise was one of the first people to see him when he was brought to a local vet clinic for emergency treatment, and she is elated to make him part of her family,” said the shelter in a Facebook update. “Denise tells us that Lucky will be an indoor cat and will have two other cats and a dog as companions.”

A Lady Freethinker petition urging local police to find the person responsible garnered more than 30,000 signatures. But despite efforts — and after determining the kitten was a stray — the culprit has not yet been found.

Thanks to the quick actions of a caring garbage collector, and the great veterinarians and shelter workers who cared for Lucky, this story has a heart-warming ending. We wish Lucky a long, healthy life with his new family, and urge police to keep looking for this innocent kitten’s attacker.

EU: Urgent Petition to Stop Bee Killing Pesticides -URGENT – Please Sign Now.

SPEAK UP FOR THE BEES NOW !

We’re so close to securing a ban on thiacloprid, Bayer’s pesticide that devastates bee populations, poisons birds, and endangers the health of farm workers.

Hundreds of SumOfUs members like you have just chipped in for hard-hitting adverts in Politico, the magazine that’s read and trusted by EU politicians. Before we go to print, please add your name to the petition so readers know exactly how many of us want a Europe free of dangerous, bee-harming chemicals:

Petition Link:

Be1

Petition Wording:

This is unbelievable. The EU is under pressure from Bayer-Monsanto to re-approve the toxic pesticide thiacloprid.

Thiacloprid is a neonicotinoid pesticide — just like the ones that the EU banned from outdoor use last year, after hundreds of thousands of SumOfUs members like you voiced your concern over the dangers those chemicals posed to bees.

But thiacloprid isn’t only bad for bees. It’s harmful to humans too, and puts workers on farms where it’s used in danger of suffering from organ damage and even cancer.

We won’t let Bayer win this one. Thiacloprid’s licence needs to be reapproved this year so there’s still time to keep the EU from making a horrible mistake — but only if we speak up right now.

Tell the EU to ban thiacloprid before it’s too late!

Thiacloprid is already banned in France because of its danger to bees, and it’s also been shown to damage human and mammal reproductive systems.

There’s no conceivable reason why this toxic pesticide should be legal in the EU — but Bayer, with its billion-euro lobbying machine, has managed to convince the European Commission so far.

But there’s one thing Bayer forgot about: Us. You and I have already fought the pesticide giant on the bees’ behalf and won.

It was our pressure that forced last year’s ban on three other bee-killing neonicotinoids. We can make the Commission acknowledge the real threat that thiacloprid poses to both bees and people, but we’ve only got a few short weeks to do it — so we need you on board now.

Tell the EU to get toxic thiacloprid out of our fields and our food!

The terrorist in the hobby hunter

jäger-

Nowhere is so much manipulated with untruths and false news as on the hunt. Violence and lies belong to the same coin.

Murdering in the forest for the joy of killing animals dilettantisch, is not a sustainable settlement, but an incomparable anomaly. Today’s hunt is a massive, destructive and militant invasion of natural rhythms and can only be described as a natural terrorism!

For decades hobby hunting has been nothing but a permanently costly construction site, patchwork and disputes for politics, forestry, agriculture, administration, justice, health insurance, insurance, animal welfare, environmental and nature conservation organizations, police, federal government, media etc.

der-terrorist-im-jäger

“Wild animals are also refugees from terrorism”

The fact that every day wild animals suffer, flee and die under the often meaningless terror of hobby hunters mostly displaces the collective consciousness in a selfish way.

Jäger am Tisch mit Hirschköpfe

After the various attacks of the followers of the Islamic state, especially in German-speaking countries, it was clear from the state of health what terrorism actually is. The feeling of empathy changed abruptly – into subdued fear.

Even politicians clap applause to this form of terrorism and see no need for action. Sure, of course! It’s not about their life. Not only that: Politicians even organize this terror and bigotry. Anyone who courtes hobby hunters seems to have a broken value compass.

Women, children, adolescents and adults are just as radicalized by hobby hunters and included in a network of violence and life-scorn, as the Pied Piper” in Islam do. Some of the victims are gradually formed into members of terror as early as childhood. Based on crippled ideologies of the “hunter Latin”, the people seeking meaning undergo training to carry out violent actions in the animal kingdom. Foxes, martens, marmots, etc. are only part of their terrorist activities. The faces of the chopped off heads of the dead wild animals, hobby hunters proudly publish on the basis of pictures, videos and statistics.

kinder als jägern

Hunting clubs are always a form of terrorist cells. There are even amateur hunters who claim that shooting a known creature is a special pleasure.

When people hunted earlier, it was important to respect life and feed only their own relatives. Foxes, birds and co. Were not killed, out of boredom, to relax or to recover through a misunderstood nature experience.

Prister segnet Jagdmesseo

“Those who enjoy killing and believe they gain prestige through a meat trophy have neither moral nor intellectual maturity to acknowledge the primitiveness of their actions. This society calls itself civilized, but how can it be civilized if even the persecution, the attacking and the killing of animals, cowering in fear, is still referred by this society as a sport? To kill for pleasure or sport, there is no justification and no apology – Hunt again gives a deep subtle psychosexual Insufficiency. “(Psychologist and neurologist Saper)

One only has to watch the wildlife to see which terror and habitat loss they suffer from. They do not have a quiet minute of their lives, they are in constant fear. As they grow, they constantly raise their eyes in a hunting area to find a hobby hunter. Freedom does not really exist when an animal has to be nocturnal, and so on. The fact that wildlife gets sick under such unnatural and stressful conditions is another point that speaks against this hobby terror.

selbstgemachte Jäger fallen

The fear  the wild animals in front of humans was only trained by them through the hunt. Walkers, cyclists and other nature users get used to the animals. This can be seen in protected areas, such as the Swiss National Park. In spite of the immense flow of visitors, red deer there eat undisturbed even in broad daylight on the open alpine meadows and do not harm any crops. Indeed, according to studies, they even promote biodiversity.

deer-pg

In addition, large parts of the hunters have a knowledge of the last century. This is mainly due to the often inadequate training in the hunter examination courses, which are mainly carried out by fanatics with sect-like ideas, which need no regular qualification. After training, the hobby hunter moves only in the echo chamber of the hunting press, which repeats their crooked and false representations steadily.

In the hunting clubs, one then confirms each other in his view of things. In this way, a secluded sect has emerged, which is hardly accessible for new information.
The fatal thing is that local press and politics still believe under the Hunter’s hat expertise available and in all natural issues like to interview the local hobby hunter.
The hobby-hunter sect then also contaminates the public space.

Hase mit Stock gegen Jäger

“IG Wild at Wild” is a nonprofit community of interests, based in Switzerland, specializing in the legal aspects of wildlife conservation. One of our main concerns is to introduce a contemporary and serious wildlife management modeled on the Canton of Geneva in the cultural landscape – without hobby hunters but with honest gamekeepers. The monopoly on violence belongs in the hands of the state and not delegated to hobby-hunter gangs.

My comment: What kind of person can enjoy taking the life of another creature?

How can a person practice the killing of animals as a hobby, justify his deeds and bloody hobby?

Psychopaths and serial killers can do it!! Serial murders and animal hunts are terribly similar.
Just like serial killers, hunters have to prove their status as a person who has power over life and death.
There are studies that show that 90% of violent criminals started as animal torturers or by hunting.

Hunting magazines are full of images that stimulate hunters and provoke fierce fantasies of hunting and prey killing.

They are full of pictures of hunters triumphant over the animals they slaughtered. The message behind it is obvious: ” Kill something – or rather someone – and you too can achieve true greatness”.

“Killing people is so much fun,” the Zodiac killer wrote in one of his letters. “It’s even better than killing wild animals in the forest, because humans are the most dangerous of all animals.”

Hunters: You have long revealed your ugly face of mendacity.
Shoot yourself and your stupid fellow travelers in politics too.

England: Exposed – Canned Lion Hunts and Their Organisers ‘Blackthorn Safaris’ and Owner Alex Goss.

England

This week we (WAV) have attempted to make contact with Blackthorn Safaris to make our disgust at what they are doing audible to them. They cannot be contacted in any way; and all of their sites appear to have been shutdown; hopefully due to the amount of mails and telephone calls that they have been getting from irate animal supporters. Here below is the basic story; but this has appeared in many UK national newspapers in the last week. Maybe it is this also that has caused Goss to close down all the sites.

Just for once he is now experiencing what it is like to be ’hunted’ – I am sure that there are many people in the UK that would wish him harm. – WAV England.

This pile of crap is an insult to the great work which is being done everywhere by UK animal welfare organisations.  He and his organisation are an offence to the good name that these groups and people have worked years to achieve.  The UK disowns shit such as this.  We hope he has a severe accident with his gun in the very near future.

Exposed – This British Firm is Hosting Canned Lion Hunts

https://ladyfreethinker.org/exposed-this-british-firm-is-hosting-canned-lion-hunts/

British company Blackthorn Safaris is charging heartless trophy hunters thousands of pounds to murder captive-bred lions like sitting ducks during “canned hunting” shoots on an estate in Kimberley, South Africa.

Alex Goss, who owns the Shropshire-based firm, posted several sickening photographs on the company’s website, picturing him with the innocent animals he and his guests have cruelly slaughtered. It is believed that the lions in the photographs were specifically bred in captivity to be mercilessly hunted down within fenced estates, leaving them with no chance of escape.

Throughout South Africa there are approximately 10,000 lions in more than 300 breeding and captive hunting centers.

Brit safari boss Alex Goss poses with a dead lion allegedly killed in a so-called 'canned hunt'

Calling canned hunting “cowardly”, Eduardo Goncalves, founder of the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting, which exposed Blackthorn Safaris’s gruesome practices, explained how lion cubs are taken from their moms just hours after birth, then raised in captivity to be killed for “entertainment”.

“In the shocking world of trophy hunting, there is nothing more depraved than captive lion hunting,” he said. “For a British company apparently to be actively organizing captive lion hunts will make people sick to the stomach. The Government should ban the import of hunting trophies, help close the loophole in international law which lets hunters shoot endangered animals for “sport” and support moves to abolish all trophy hunting”.

“Lions are in serious danger of going extinct,” added Goncalves. “In the 1950s, there were up to 450,000 lions in the wild. Today there are just 20,000. Lions have disappeared from 90% of their range and gone extinct in 26 countries.”
