USA: Arizona – Ban Wildlife Killing Contests – Take Action Now !

Proj coy action alert

Dear Mark,
If you’ve already submitted comments to the Arizona Game and Fish (AZGF) Commission in support of their proposed rule to ban wildlife killing contests in the state – thank you!

If not, there’s still time to submit your comments. The Commission is accepting public comments on the proposed rule through this Sunday, May 12th.

There is also an opportunity to speak at the Commission’s June 21st meeting in Phoenix. Details below.

Wildlife killing contests are cruel and senseless events where participants compete to kill the greatest number, the largest, the smallest, or even the youngest of the targeted animal for prizes and entertainment. Hundreds of bobcats, coyotes, cougars, foxes, rabbits, badgers and other species are killed in these contests every year in Arizona.
Please write to the Commission TODAY urging them to support the proposed rule to prohibit wildlife killing contests.

Email comments to the Arizona Game and Fish Department:
rulemaking@azgfd.gov

You may also mail written comments to:
Arizona Game and Fish Department
Attn.: Rules Section
5000 W. Carefree Highway
Phoenix, AZ 85086

You can simply say, “Please adopt a rule change to Article 3, R12-4-303 that bans wildlife killing contests in Arizona. As someone who cares deeply about Arizona’s wildlife, people, and pets, I strongly support this proposed rule and changes to it that will remove loopholes, enhance enforcement, and broaden protections to all unprotected animals. Thank you for considering a ban on these barbaric events.”

To be most effective, we strongly encourage you to personalize your message, expressing why abolishing wildlife killing contests is so important to you. When taking into account the public’s opinion, the Commission sorts comments by original letters and form letters – original, personalized letters will have much more impact.

If you live out of state, you may also submit written comments for the official record but it is especially important to personalize your letter. Consider discussing how you do not wish to spend tourism dollars in a state that allows wildlife killing contests.

Additional Talking Points:
● Banning wildlife killing contests will prevent a small minority of the population from recklessly slaughtering our wild animals for private gain.
● Killing contests are ethically and ecologically indefensible.
● Killing contests are a bloodsport like dogfighting and cockfighting. Killing wildlife for thrills and prizes–with no respect for their intrinsic or ecological value–is senseless violence and waste.
● Killing contests damage the reputation of responsible hunters by violating fundamental hunting ethics – threatening the future of hunting. Countless animals are injured or orphaned during killing contests. The events put non-target species (including imperiled wolves) at risk. Participants use electronic calling devices, which mimic the sounds of prey or young in distress, to lure the target animals in for an easy kill.
● The public will no longer tolerate wildlife killing contests. Six city and county governments in Arizona – Tucson, Dewey-Humboldt, Flagstaff, Coconino County, Pima County, and Yavapai County – have passed resolutions condemning wildlife killing contests. New Mexico banned coyote killing contests in April, and California and Vermont have taken similar actions in recent years.
● There is no scientific evidence that indiscriminately killing wild animals reduces their populations, increases populations of game animals like deer, or protects livestock. Randomly killing coyotes, for example, disrupts their pack structure, which can increase their populations and increase conflicts with coyotes. Preventing conflicts with the use of humane, non-lethal methods is more effective.
● Wild animals play an important ecological role in healthy ecosystems. Native carnivores control rabbit and rodent populations, keep environments free of animal carcasses, and increase biodiversity.
● We do not seek a ban on hunting. We simply call for an end to organized events where participants compete to kill animals for “fun” and prizes.

Save the date!
You will have an opportunity to speak in support of the proposed rule in June at the Commission’s telephonic meeting. We encourage you to attend – your voice speaks volumes.
What: Arizona Game and Fish Commission Telephonic Meeting
Date: June 21, 2019

Barcelona and the ZOOXXI initiative

The ZOOXXI Platform warns that the campaign does not end here and encourages all zoos worldwide to “cross the doors to the 21st century”

During today’s plenary session at the Barcelona City Council, the last session of this term, the ZOOXXI Citizens’ Initiative has been passed. The initiative proposes a modification of the Animal Protection, Possession and Sale Ordinance, which affects the Barcelona zoo.

WhatsApp-Image-ZOOIXX Initiative peg

After more than 10 years of investigation, mobilization and socialization for this project, this animal rights platform, now known for launching the first Citizens’ Initiative in Barcelona, has seen the ordinance be finally passed. It will drastically change Barcelona’s current zoo model.

The proposal includes a paradigm shift that can allow the zoo “to open up to nature” and invest most of its efforts on in-situ conservation for the protection of natural habitats.

Bär im Zoo pg

Only animals whose reproduction can contribute to either long or short term conservation of the species, and who are meant to be reintroduced back into nature, will continue to be reproduced at the zoo.

A scientific and ethical committee with experts on each species will be in charge of deciding.

Furthermore, in few words, ZOOXXI also wants to add a technological side to the facility so that visitors can get to know the conservation programs the zoo is carrying out in situ, which they helped finance with their ticket. This will be possible through advanced immersive technologies that will allow visitors to learn about the natural behavior of animals “without causing any suffering”. ZOOXXI will also include the 3Rs center (Rescue, Recovery and Relocation) which will shelter animals that have been hurt, abandoned or seized from illegal trafficking.

Blöde Kinder beobachten Gorilla_n

The Platform also suggests the application of Compassionate Conservation and the creation of the first Scientific Studies Center on Animal Sentience. The new zoo model will encourage an educational model based on empathy towards animals, which according to scientific studies and various pilot studies, contributes to the prevention of bullying and results in better prosocial behavior while creating a “culture of peace”.

ZOOXXI Initiative für Zoos pg

“Today has been a win for the planet and a loss for skepticism. Today people, empathy, ethics and freedom have won over the economic interests of animal captivity and illegal trafficking of species.

Today draws a line between what we were in the past and what we want to be now, while remembering, forgiving and acknowledging colonialist, despoiling and mercantilist thinking from the past.

We now have a planet to save, millions of animals to rescue, thousands of habitats to protect and hundreds of zoos to convince. We have not done all this work to reshape a zoo, we have worked to save habitats, to save the planet and that is why we need all zoos worldwide. From today, all zoos are invited to cross the doors to the 21st century” said Leonardo Anselmi, who coordinated the Citizens’ Initiative.

The goals of the initiative in image presentation

My comment: An interesting initiative and certainly an improvement over most of the current zoos.
However, the prerequisite is that we consider a zoo to be necessary, ethically acceptable and justifiable.

Nowhere we have read about the rights of these individual animals imprisoned for the stupid fun of the masses.
We also have not read about keeping iconic animals because they are a public magnet, like big cats, elephants, giraffes, etc.
Nowhere have we read about the conditions and the reproduction of natural habitats.

Perhaps there is much more information than in this small part, but this report has given the impression that it is more an improvement of slavery than a radical reform.
This is somewhat reminiscent of the debate on the cage size of lab rats instead of banning the systems that capture and use them.

My best regards to all, Venus

USA: Cyanide Bombs Banned In Oregon. Coyotes, Foxes and Other Wildlife Are Safer !

USA-Flagge

Dear Mark,

Great news out of Oregon!

Thanks to your help—as well as that of our colleagues with Predator Defense, Oregon Wild, Audubon Society of Portland, and others—SB 580, a bill to ban cyanide devices (also known as M-44s or cyanide bombs), was signed into law earlier this week by Governor Kate Brown.

The legislation prohibits the use of deadly M-44s to kill coyotes, foxes and other wildlife in Oregon.

This victory in Oregon—following bans in California (1998/ballot measure) and Washington (2000/ballot measure)—sets a standard for the humane treatment of wildlife in the thirteen states that have yet to ban cyanide bombs. These cruel and senseless devices are still used for predator control in Nevada, Utah, Colorado (only on private land), Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Virginia, and West Virginia. (Idaho placed a temporary moratorium on M-44 use in 2017.)

We will continue pressing for a ban of poisons and other indiscriminate wildlife killing methods across the West, and we thank all of our supporters who spoke up for Oregon’s wildlife, people and pets—your voices made a difference!

For coexistence,

Katie Stennes
Project Coyote Programs & Communications Manager

P.S.: More good news! On Monday in Californiathe State Assembly passed AB 1788, which would ban deadly rodenticides, by a vote of 50 to 16—that bill now moves on to the Senate.

China: Yulin Is Coming – Take Action Now.

China

yulin 16 4.png

Act NOW – Yulin is Coming.

Across China, pets are being stolen, roaming dogs—owned and unowned—are violently grabbed from the streets and slaughterhouses are filled with terrified dogs. This cruelty supplies the country’s dog meat markets and the annual dog meat “festival” happening next month in Yulin. But this is only the beginning of their suffering.

The journey to Yulin is a ruthless and appalling one. Crammed on top of each other and transported in trucks for days without food or water, some won’t make it alive. For those who do, they’ll wait, frightened and helpless, until it’s their turn to be pulled by the neck with iron tongs and beaten to death for someone’s meal.

Petition 2

Make your voice heard. Join HSI in urging Prime Minister of China, Li Keqiang, to end Yulin and the dog and cat meat trade once and for all.

yulin 16 1

This is not a lost cause, and you’re the reason why. With your support, we’re closing dog meat farms in South Korea, rescuing animals, helping dog meat farmers transition to humane ways of living and supporting the closure of dog slaughterhouses. And across Asia, we’re promoting an adoption culture in those nations where the dog meat trade flourishes. Our work to end the Yulin dog meat festival forever will greatly strengthen those efforts.

Thanks to public outcry from compassionate animal lovers like you, this event has shrunk in size year by year, with fewer animals suffering and dying for their meat.

yulin eyes never lie

Now more than ever, we must stick together to keep the pressure on.

Please stand with us this year as we work to end this festival for good and put an end to the dog meat industry across Asia.

Thank you for all that you do for animals, and for standing with us. Your support is critical to putting a permanent end to this horror and the many other cruelties we seek to prevent.

Over the last few days we have been working Christa at Animals Angels providing data on a variety of issues. All this work relates to our campaign about how the EU is failing animals in transport, and how EU Regulation 1/2005 on the ‘Protection’ of animals during transport is simply not worth the paper it is written on.

We are providing a series of links and data about Animals Angels and we would encourage you to review some of the reports that we have provided links for.

In addition, here are a few links to some of our recent posts relating to live animal transport within, and from, the EU. We hope that the information provided by both ourselves and Animals Angels will give you ‘conversation room’ should you get anyone at your door asking for political party votes at the European Elections.

All of the following relates to Animals Angels:

Our Organisation

Animals’ Angels is an animal welfare organisation based in Frankfurt, Germany. Our commitment is to the so-called ‘farm’ animals, focusing on the protection of animals during transport. Among other things, we demand the abolition of long-distance animal transports. Until then, we want to achieve that animal transports at least comply with existing legislation.

EU Live Exports: Conference of Agriculture Ministers Yields Frustrating Result: Long Distance Animal Transports Will Continue

15-04-2019 Animal Transports EU Live Exports Created by Animals’ Angels e. V.

The Conference of Agriculture Ministers met in Landau from 10 to 12 April. However, the desired outcome was not achieved: Long distance animal transports from Germany to non-EU countries will be continued. There will not be a nationwide export stop  – despite overwhelming proof that these transports to countries such as Morocco or Uzbekistan are contrary to animal welfare. Sadly, this was not to be expected otherwise. The business with ‘breeding’ animals is simply too big.

Instead of banning the export of live animals, the federal government wants to support the states with a central database and thus improve animal protection. A digital platform will be used in future to check for infringements of animal welfare and the plausibility of journey logs. What this means for the animals remains questionable, however. After all, there is already enough evidence that it is not possible to transport animals to non-EU countries in conformity with the law.

Animals’ Angels continues to put pressure on politicians and authorities to ensure that the current debate will not just fall silent after the conference. And we will continue to be there with the animals and continue to confront those who are responsible with the results of our investigations.

Animal Transports in the EU

In the EU alone, around 3.8 million animals are transported every day.

That is 1.4 billion animals a year. In the transport business, as in all branches of industry, money is at stake. Animals are transported where the highest profits are expected. All too often these transports take place under cruel conditions. The longer the transport lasts, the more the animals suffer.

On land, in the seas, in the sky, the devastating impact of humans on nature is laid bare in a compelling UN report.

One million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction.

Nature everywhere is declining at a speed never previously seen and our need for ever more food and energy are the main drivers.

These trends can be halted, the study says, but it will take “transformative change” in every aspect of how humans interact with nature.

New Petition
Animal rights groups call for ouster of professor for alleged animal abuse

The Korea Times reported on April 24, Animal rights groups have urged Seoul National University (SNU to dismiss a renowned veterinary professor, who is accused of abusing a retired working dog in animal tests.

The Korean Animal Rights Advocates (KARA), the Korean Welfare Animal Association and the Beagle Rescue Network (BRN) co-organized the event on the World Day for Laboratory Animals. “As the Animal Protection Law stipulates that working dogs are banned from being used in animal experimentation, how could Lee conduct experiments on this dog. His animal experiments with a retired working dog, which is unprecedented in the world, have become an object of derision and show the reality of animal rights in Korea,” they added.

Are farmers victims?

“Murderers”, “animal torturers”, “exploiters”, “criminals”, “you should be slaughtered” – farmers who keep livestock are confronted with hate mailings on Facebook. This is shown by a study by the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.

österreichische Flagge

This is problematic because of the growing pressure on farmers to increasingly engage with consumers in direct dialogue, the university said in a release.

According to study author Christian Dürnberger from the Ethics of Human-Animal Relations Department of the Messerli Research Institute of Vetmeduni, farmers who present their work in social networks are accused of “forcing and rape cows”.

künstliche besammungjpg

Again and again there are Holocaust comparisons and personal criticisms, insults or threats, even to their children. Literal citations are, for example, “Your children should also be fried” or “Your children should die of cancer”!

kuh im Stall angekettet

The study, published in the journal “International Journal of Livestock Production”, sees this as problematic because farmers are increasingly being challenged to find new ways of communicating, especially in the sense of a more direct dialogue with consumers and citizens.

He has therefore raised the motives of farmers for their presence on Facebook. Not only economic interests were at the center, but the farmers are also concerned with basic information and dialogue on agriculture and livestock farming in order to increase their knowledge of agricultural practice!!

kuh im Dreck, gestorbenjpg

However, Dürnberger sees the understanding of dialogue that emerges as “not unproblematic”: because this usually means less an exchange at eye level between different actors, but rather an instruction of laymenthe citizensby experts – the farmers. “It is questionable to what extent such an understanding of dialogue is sufficient to deal adequately with critical inquiries in social networks,” says Dürnberger.

https://diepresse.com/home/panorama/oesterreich/5623405/Moerder-Tierquaeler_Bauern-als-Opfer-von-Hasspostings

My comment:  So I propose a rescue operation for the farmers: they take over the role of the animals:

which they rape
which they hold in dark stables for life
which they separate from their children when they are born,
which they do not treat when they get sick and old,
which they send as little babies in the transports ….

On this way, the farmers will not be the victims anymore!

Farmers Liberation!

If farmers feel that the “Shitstorm” is based on false facts, then they would not mind a role reversal.

My best regards to all, Venus

British soldier killed by elephant during anti-poaching operation in Malawi.

flagge-england_jpg

Not something that is widely known, but British forces have been working in Africa for quite a while to help protect endangered wildlife from poachers. It is terrible to hear this news today.

British soldier killed by elephant during anti-poaching operation in Malawi

British soldier has been killed during an anti-poaching operation in Malawi, the MoD has announced.

Guardsman Mathew Talbot of The 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, was killed whilst on counter poaching operations in the African country on May 5, 2019.

The Telegraph understands Gdsm Talbot was killed by an elephant and that there were no other injuries to local nationals or other British soldiers.

Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt said: “I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Guardsman Mathew Talbot, who died while carrying out vital counter-poaching work in Malawi.

British soldiers are deployed across Africa helping in the fight against illegal wildlife poaching. Animals under particular threat include elephants, rhinos and lions.

Malawi’s elephant population is estimated to have halved from 4,000 in the 1980s to 2,000 in 2015.

The deployments to Nkhotakota and Majete Wildlife Reserves in the country started last May, following a successful pilot scheme in Liwonde National Park in 2017.

British troops are training rangers in tracking, general infantry skills and bushcraft, doubling the number of rangers mentored by soldiers in Malawi to 120.

Training has been funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund and was boosted by nearly £1 million of extra funding late last year.

Part of the extra funding went to the Wildlife Crimes Investigations and Intelligence Unit, an initiative that has improved intelligence gathering markedly. Last year 1000 kgs of ivory were seized and 114 arrests made, a ten-fold increase in detentions compared to 2015.

The betrayal of the EU to the animals

Riss durch Europa

The EU has betrayed the “European idea” for democracy, solidarity and peace: the euro and banking crisis, migration crisis, foreign policy, economic policy … all this is in the EU’s account and we could even call it a heresy
But the worst betrayal of the EU is the betrayal of the animals.

On 14.02.2019, the majority of the EU Parliament rejected significant improvements for animal transport within the EU and in third countries.
A black day for the animals.
Also proposed improvements for torture conditions in transports in non-EU countries, such as Egypt or Turkey, were not accepted.

Tiertransporte-Tschecheien nach Irak-offenes-Fahrzeug-BIGA-TTEXAnimal transports from the Czech Republic to Iraq-Photo: Animals Angels

The majority of MEPs, as always, are only concerned with the profits of the “meat mafia.” That is, they are not interested in the immeasurable suffering of animals during transport; and it will continue!

The transport business requires 1.4 billion animals per year, of which 4 million “livestock” are transported from the EU to third countries every year: cattle, pigs, sheep and hens are these “slaughter animals”, who suffer cruelly in the transport – despite legal EU regulations.

Tiertransport-Einstreu-BIGA-TTEXExcrement and ammonia is animal cruelty

The Transport Regulation of the EU in Article 3 says:
-The animals must be transportable.
-The transport should be designed so that no injuries and suffering arise.
-Violence towards animals during transport is prohibited.
-Delays in transportation are also prohibited, unless the animals can be supplied with water and food.

Tiertransporte-Erschoepfung schwangere Kuh-BIGA-TTEXExhausted cow, due to birth of calf in truck-foto: Animals Anngel`s

In practice, however, there is no time limit for animal transport. The animals can in principle be transported endlessly. In addition, the EU regulation contains a large number of inaccurate provisions, which in practice are always interpreted to the detriment of the animals. They are usually transported in excess, the animals can hardly lie down to rest – injuries are predetermined.

Tiertransporte-Rind-Verletzung-BIGA-TTEUCow with broken horn-Foto: Animals Angels

In 2013, Danish MEP Dan Jørgensen launched the 8hours campaign with Animals Angels.
To date, and despite the 1.2 million signatures, the EU rejects this 8hours transport limit.

Tiertransport-Schweine-Hitze-Stress-BIGA-TTEUSign of dehydration-Foto: Animals Angels

Enforcing the law is an illusion as long as there are long-distance transports.
On the other hand, Member States have a duty to ensure efficient enforcement of the legislation in animal transports.
Which is just a farce.

Tiertransporte-Warteschlange-Zoll-BIGA-TTEXDays long waiting in customs-Foto: Animals Angels

Because after joining the EU, many countries took the opportunity to do real business with the animals. Thanks to the EU subsidies.

Many animal rights organizations have documented the manure stalls in animal transports, in the crematoria for strays of various southern and eastern countries.
Unfortunately without results, that is: without sanctions for guilty parties.
They have proven that illegal crime against animals is tolerated, ignored and thus promoted by the EU.

Animal Welfare Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis is an agrarian lobbyist, a fur farmers supporter, a friend and helper to all animal exploiters.

According to Commissioner Andriukaitis, the animal welfare legislation is country thing, in other words: people! we cannot do anything!

Polish non-attached MEP Dobromir Sośnierz (MEP of the reactionary party Wolność / KORWIN) said in his speech to the European Commission, “Animals do not pay taxes and therefore we should not talk about them!”

We want to remind him that animals pay with their lives for people to make money. No EU- law protects them as persons, they apply as raw materials.

We only ask ourselves with horror, why should we pay the salary of such a mindless person.

“The Animal Welfare Policy of the European Commission is a Dirty Animal Welfare Policy,” said MEP Stefan Eck.

Yes! It is fact, the EU has failed.
In that sense, it makes no sense for anyone to be involved in these fiasco elections.

My best regards to all, Venus
