350,000 signatures against overfishing!

 

We arrived in 2019 … the year in which the EU promised to end the overfishing of our seas.

We at Our Fish will do our utmost to ensure that the fisheries ministers stop overfishing. Because ending the overfishing will be a legacy for which they will be celebrated for many more years! Thanks to your support, the European Commission and the EU Fisheries Ministers in December received an impression of our resolve when we handed them over 350,000 signatures in Brussels. In addition, they received a total of 20,000 emails from you! The god of the sea Poseidon was on our side, and made sure that your voices and those of the oceans were heard. And the global media have also listened.

Although ministers have not agreed on sufficient measures to put an end to overfishing in the EU, we have put them under enormous pressure. And they are responding to this pressure – at a time when we know that the conservation of our seas is critical in combating climate change. The end of overfishing is the simplest, fastest and most important means.

That’s why this year is so incredibly important. We are ready to call on ministers to take urgent action to put an end to many years of destructive overfishing and wasteful discards. But that will not be easy, and we need your support to set as ambitious goals as possible!

Bec [Our Fish Manager] has ushered in the New Year with an interview (English), which marked the final entry into force of the discard ban (the wasteful practice of throwing dead or dying fish overboard).

This week, some of the world’s leading video surveillance experts will be on board in Brussels to educate decision makers on how cameras work.

And that is just the beginning!!

Last week, the Our Fish team met in Berlin to discuss the way forward for this, hopefully historic, year – and there were some great ideas!

January was already a significant month for ending overfishing. We have many more plans for the next few months, which we would like to share with you!

Sick meat from Poland: EU takes command!

A slaughterhouse in Poland is said to have secretly killed sick animals. Tons of meat came into circulation – even in other EU countries. Warsaw authorities rule out health risks though. Nevertheless, the EU Commission determines.

The EU Commission has opened an investigation into a meat scandal at a slaughterhouse in Poland.

Inspectors are scheduled to travel to Poland on Monday to analyze the situation, a spokeswoman for the Brussels authorities said.

The factory in Masovian Voivodeship, against which Polish authorities are now investigating, (amongst other things) for illegal slaughter, was closed. About 9.5 tonnes of meat were put into circulation, one third of it to other EU countries.

At least 14 countries affected

According to the authorities, a health risk does not exist. The meat is traced back and taken off the market. At least 14 countries are affected, including Germany.

The background is a report by the Polish news channel TVN24 on scandalous practices in a slaughterhouse in Masovian Voivodeship. There, sick animals were secretly slaughtered and the meat was circulated. A reporter had joined the company as a worker.

“That was an illegal procedure”

Pawel Niemczuk, head of the Polish Veterinary Office, confirmed the illegal practices: “This was an illegal procedure at night when there was no veterinary supervision.”

According to the EU Commission, apart from Poland, Germany, France, Spain, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Portugal are affected as well. The extent is not yet completely clear, as it was called.

Polish authorities have removed meat and products from the market for illegal slaughter, but they have put their health and lives at risk.

Criticism from the Czech Republic

My comment: Cheer!! The EU has certainly found something to justify its existence: the protection of consumer health!! Although it is too late, the 9.5 tons of “sick” meat are a long time ago eaten.

The EU Commissioners are not interested in animals that are used illegally in slaughterhouses even though they are ill, and although the law (the EU law !!) requires emergency slaughter.

For sick animals, pregnant cows and newborn calves that are illegally transported in Europe, the EU is not interested.
And all these sacrifices produce more than 9.5 tons of meat per year!

Because they are “only” animals and the EU knows very well that its voters are not the animals but the meat consumers. So it has to pretend to protect them.

Nobody seriously believes that of all the EU countries only Poland in factory farming is the “sinner”. But the EU (more precisely: Germany) has divided its partners into the first and second category, Poland belongs to the second. For political reasons, which are not relevant here to mention.
For example, there are still 800 fur farms in Poland where animals suffer cruelly, but that has never been a problem for the EU. Despite the thousand petition signatures.
No MEP has ever been interested in it.

Actually, the “sick” meat does not interest the EU either.
It is only a welcome tool of manipulation for EU citizens, so we all forget what the real problem with factory farming in the EU is.

Even radical climate change action won’t save glaciers, endangering 2 billion people

At least a third of the huge ice fields in Asia’s towering mountain chain are doomed to melt due to climate change, according to a landmark report, with serious consequences for almost 2 billion people.

Even if carbon emissions are dramatically and rapidly cut and succeed in limiting global warming to 1.5C, 36% of the glaciers along in the Hindu Kush and Himalaya range will have gone by 2100. If emissions are not cut, the loss soars to two-thirds, the report found.

The glaciers are a critical water store for the 250 million people who live in the Hindu Kush-Himalaya (HKH) region, and 1.65 billion people rely on the great rivers that flow from the peaks into India, Pakistan, China and other nations.

Rare snowfall in China sanctuary creates a moon bear wonderland

 

 

As the new year dawns, and snow coats our China sanctuary, hope builds for nearly 800 bears holding on for rescue in Vietnam.

Happy New Year!

Over the New Year period, our sanctuary in Chengdu, China enjoyed a rare dusting of snow which transformed the sanctuary into a glorious winter wonderland.

For the bears it was their first proper snowfall in many years and they absolutely loved it. They rushed out of their dens to explore the snow-dusted enclosures and took great delight in stomping, eating and digging around in the most wonderful natural enrichment mother nature can provide.

While much of the world was enjoying chocolates under the tree and hearty family feasts, sanctuary staff spent the festive season with the bears. They continued to work round the clock throughout the holiday, keeping the bears’ tummies full and their hearts happy.

The China team had a sick bear on their hands, who is slowly improving thanks to their relentless care throughout both the days and nights of his ongoing recovery.

With 366 bears presently in our care, we can’t afford to switch off for a single day, and that is a commitment only possible thanks to our fabulous friends and supporters around the world.

It is you who kept that sick bear safe over the holidays. You kept Kevin smiling and hungry beauty Nicole satiated with all her favourite treats.

Your compassion gives hope too to all the bears holding on for rescue. Together with the Vietnamese government, we will rescue up to 800 bears by 2022. This is far and away the greatest challenge we’ve ever taken on – perhaps the greatest challenge any animal welfare charity has ever faced – but I know we can do it because we have you on our side.

You give me hope, because every year I am amazed at what you can do. The time you devote, the funds you ingeniously raise, and the attention you command when you tell the world what we’re doing.

Work continues on plans for how such an enormous number of rescues can be carried out and the long-term future care of every bear assured, and we hope to have exciting progress to share with you later in 2019.

The meat mafia, the truck driver, the average person sees in these pictures no more animals.
They see that a product has collapsed due to extreme weather conditions. The only question is how cleaners can cleanse the body.
No one cares that sentient beings were killed by negligence and sent to their deaths.

The more consumers become desensitized to this disease, the more normal, natural, and unavoidable the crime appears to be. Therefore, the corrupt media are constantly busy with the consequences of the cold for the people.

In addition to Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein has today released a 20-month-old wolf male, Roddy, for shooting.

In the district Nienburg lives a wolf family consisting of father, mother, 2 children from May 2018, a 2.5 year old fox and a sixth unknown wolf.
Roddy had 8 attacks in 2017 alone. In 2018 it was 32. 22 x of them on sheep. 20 x they were not protected! All not protected and not stalled. The livestock owners there do not want to protect. Over 92% + of the killed animals were NOT protected!

The shooting is unlawful and punishable. The legal requirements are not available. Protect would have had to happen first.

The shooting of Roddy was approved on 31.01.2019.

The initiator of the petition has sent many emails and legislative proposals from friendly judges, etc. to the Minister and his staff.

PS of the petition initiator: I go with my wolfhounds twice a week in Roddy’s area. It is an ideal wolf habitat and large parts are NATURA 2000 area. There is so much game there. If the livestock farmers would protect, the population would not even know that there are 6 wolves living there.

My comment:  Once a wild animal kills another animal to survive, the farmers give the order to shoot!
When they torture and slaughter  animals the farmer call this “agrarian economy”.
They receive subsidies for the construction of fences and protection from “wild” animals, but they do not do it.
The wolves do their work in the forest and take care of their families, as opposed to the farmers who live on subsidies for torture and slaughter of animals. With 1.5 billion euros in subsidies per year, the german farmers are top earners!

“Who protects his animals, is a denouncer!”, because we want a massacre!!

In a truly sickening case of animal abuse, three Chinese workers in a Malaysian steel manufacturing company brutally roped up a black dog and continued to torture the animal as it yelped in terror and struggled desperately to escape.

First, the men poured water over the helpless dog in a seeming attempt at drowning. One of the men then smashed the animal in the head with a hammer, splattering blood over the floor. The men continued the horror by pouring boiling water over the dog’s body to loosen the fur so they could scrape it away.

Finally, the dog was disemboweled where it lay.

The footage of this horrifying incident, captured at Alliance Steel Sdn Bhd in Kuantan Industrial Park, was shared on Facebook by an individual named John Gan, where it went viral as outraged viewers called for justice.

 

WAV Comment – why not go to the company web site and tell them how you feel about their inactions – there are lots of comments.  Demand the workers are taken to the police, prosecuted, and then sacked from their jobs; it does not seem like they are ‘working’ to us.  Demand the management acts.

stating that they are taking the incident seriously and conducting an internal investigation. We must speak out to make sure they keep their word.

The actions of these men were not only inhumane, but they were also illegal and should not be tolerated.

Sign this petition urging Alliance Steel Sdn Bhd to thoroughly investigate this awful event, fire all individuals involved and work to ensure their prosecution.
