The million dollar vegan campaign for Pope Francis !

-popefrancis

Pope Francis has been offered a $1 million donation to a charity of his choice – if he follows a vegan diet during Lent.

The Million Dollar Vegan campaign – which is backed by a host of celebrities, environmentalists and scientists – wants to ‘highlight the devastating impact of animal agriculture’ including deforestation and biodiversity loss as well the suffering it causes to billions of farmed animals.

Campaign supporters include musician Moby, actor Mena Suvari, and scientist Joseph Poore of Oxford University. It has the backing of environmentalists George Monbiot and Chris Packham. Paul McCartney, a long-time vegetarian and co-founder of the Meat Free Monday campaign, also supports Million Dollar Vegan.

Go vegan

A letter written to the pope by 12-year-old animal rights and environmental campaigner Genesis Butler with the help of the Million Dollar Vegan team – will be printed today in national newspapers in 15 countries across five continents.

In the letter, Butler urges Francis to try a vegan diet for Lent, highlighting the connection between climate change and pollution, and the inefficiency of animal farming and how it contributes to world hunger, the extinction of wildlife and the suffering of farmed animals. These are all issues that Pope Francis has spoken out on in his 2015 encyclical letter Laudato Si.’

“Farming and slaughtering animals causes a lot of suffering and is also a leading cause of climate change, deforestation, and species loss,” Butler wrote in the letter.

“When we feed animals crops that humans can eat, it is wasteful. And with a growing world population, we cannot afford to be wasteful.”

As part of the Million Dollar Vegan campaign – which was created by Veganuary Founders Matthew Glover and Jane Land – a petition has also been created to ask the pope to try vegan for Lent. If he agrees, the Blue Horizon International Foundation will donate $1 million to the charity or charities of the pope’s choice.

Bold vegan campaign

“We are launching this deliberately bold, audacious campaign to jolt our world leaders from their complacency,” said Matthew Glover, the CEO of Million Dollar Vegan and Co-founder of Veganuary.

“For too long they have failed to act on evidence of the damage caused to people and the planet by animal agriculture. Worse, many have defended and subsidized that very industry. But the evidence now is stark and compelling, and we cannot afford for them to remain silent any longer.

“We are thankful that Pope Francis has spoken out on these issues and that is why we are humbly asking him to try vegan for Lent and set an example of how each of us can align our principles of caring and compassion with our actions.”

Million Dollar Vegan is encouraging people of all backgrounds to try vegan for Lent and has produced a free Vegan Starter Kit – written in multiple languages and with country-specific content – that is available to download.

India: February 2019 – Just Some of the Latest Rescues From ‘Animal Aid Unlimited’.

india

AA 2019 header

Thank you for helping stretch the beauty and goodness of animal rescue into other parts of India. We’re growing the animal help movement thanks to you through our First Aid Training Program.

We currently have a wonderful group of 8 trainees who have come from all across India. Some were inspired by the Animal Aid rescue videos and have already started helping injured and ill animals in their regions. They’ve come to acquire the training to safely handle, dress wounds, understand infectious diseases, treat mange and to learn how to document cases, share results, recruit volunteers and get the donations they need for medicine.

If you are a resident of India and would like to learn how to help injured animals in your city or region, sign up today!

Puffin’s head was hit by a motorcycle–and he wouldn’t give up

Our hearts were breaking when we saw a small puppy laying unconscious on the road near a pool of blood. A motorcycle had hit him in the head, and he seemed to be taking his final breaths. We didn’t know if we could save him, but we had to try. We rushed him back to Animal Aid’s hospital and began his treatment with medicine to reduce the swelling in his brain, and treat his pain and shock. His brain injury was serious and even after a few days, when he regained consciousness, he wasn’t able to stand or eat without help. We surrounded him with love as he slept for many days, waking up only for syringe feeds. But gradually, his wakeful moments increased, and we watched a flower unfolding in his extraordinarily sweet nature. Because of your help, we saved him. Meet beautiful Puffin today.

When you love someone, you never need to give up hope.

Please donate today for street animal rescue.

Saving Moshe

A dog with a terrible head wound absolutely undulating with maggots staggered on the road when we rescued him. The maggots had consumed much of his forehead and the tissue surrounding his skull. We worried that they had bored through his skull, and rushed to treat his pain and begin the process of removing the worms and necrotic tissue, cleansing and bandaging the enormous wound.

His agony must have prevented him from eating; he was extremely thin and exhausted. But medical treatment, food and love saved his life. Meet magnificent Moshe today.

Please show your love for the most vulnerable, and donate today.

Huge relief for little Iris, rescued with an intestine bursting out of a wound

Hiding and frozen in fear, this darling little girl waited with her insides coming out of an enormously swollen wound site. We rushed her back to Animal Aid for emergency surgery to save her life. We cleaned and surgically repaired her dangling intestinal tissue and extensively damaged muscle. After recovery, it took only a few hours for this whirlwind of a girl to get back into her stride.

You can be the person who saves the next little one.  Please donate

Dog with shredded leg sobs when seeing rescuers

Her bone was shattered and protruding, the leg hanging by just a thread of skin. But still, this incredibly dear girl wagged her tail and cried out for help when she saw her rescuers, almost as if she realized that without them, she couldn’t possibly survive.

Watch this extraordinarily charming, adorable dog face her life’s greatest challenge, and cause everyone to fall in love with her in the process.

Somewhere right now a street animal is desperately hoping to be rescued. Together we can get to her in time.

Please donate today.

Celebrate the Caregivers: Mangi Bai

8 years ago Animal Aid was given one of the greatest

gifts in our history: Mangi Bai Gameti, who from her first moments on the job,

dove in to help every animal she could.

mangi

Watching over the health, safety, treatment and play for about 30 disabled, old but cheerful dogs on two sites, Mangi Bai is one of the precious souls who notices a dog with an itchy ear, nails that need to be cut or a new cough; she’s a whiz at bandaging a dragging foot; she can coax the most reluctant eater into enjoying a meal and she keeps the area of “her” dogs immaculate. She has trained many new staff and serves as an inspiration even to the most senior caregivers and volunteers. Wherever she goes, the animals’ eyes stay fixed on her because they know she is their beloved safety net.

USA: Its The State of the Planet; Not Just The Union !

USA

WAV Comment – we know that this has happened, but some very good issues – and quite rightly; Trumpet did not talk about them !

trump global sea level 1 trump digs coal

Mark,

In tonight’s State of the Union, we can expect President Trump to make a number of false or misleading claims. Unfortunately, we don’t expect President Trump to talk about the crucial issues that reveal the REAL state of our union: rising global warming emissions, weakened public health protections, suppressed scientific studies, undermined fuel economy standards, undue industry influence in the government, and more.

Join us during the State of the Union to set the record straight on important issues President Trump will likely misrepresent or omit during his address. During the president’s speech, we’ll be tweeting using the #RealSOTU hashtag. Join in the conversation using some of our tweets below or with your own thoughts. Help us highlight the growing crisis of climate change and the importance of science-based protections in keeping us safe and healthy.

Considering last year’s speech and other factors, here are things the president will likely refer to…and the reality he’ll likely skip:

The Economy: It’s practically guaranteed that President Trump will talk about the economy, but here’s what you probably won’t hear:

Security: Given the recent shutdown showdown over the border wall, President Trump will likely spend a lot of time focused on the idea of border security, while ignoring some of the real threats to our country:

big power plant

Regulatory Rollback: The president will likely present cuts in regulations as a step forward, but the reality is:

Yours Sincerely,

EU: New Law Passed Blocking Senior Members From Having Secret Meetings With Lobbyists.

EUUN0001

Lobbyist 1

Hi Mark,

Last week the European Parliament PASSED a law blocking senior members from secret meetings from lobbyists – requiring a public record of what meetings happen.

In the last weeks the WeMove community has sent tens of thousands of emails to the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). During just the last two days before the vote 90,000 of us signed a petition urging the MEPs to vote in favour of the rule. And it worked!

Transparency won, even though, due to a request by the European People’s Party, the ballot was secret. And it won by only FOUR VOTES. Just imagine!

This is the difference our community has made in Europe.

Thank you!!!
Mika (Bordeaux), Marta (Warsaw), Andrew (Amsterdam), Giulio (Rome) and the entire WeMove team

USA: Petition – Ban the Brutal Slaughter of America’s Wild Horses.

SIGN: Ban the Brutal Slaughter of America’s Wild Horses

SIGN: Ban the Brutal Slaughter of America’s Wild Horses

Posted by Carly Day

Petition target: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy

A new bill introduced in the US House of Representatives would not only prevent horse slaughterhouses from operating in the United States but also outlaw the sale, transport, import or export of horses or horse parts for human consumption.

Horses sent to slaughter suffer horrendously, packed into crowded trucks and shipped for hours or even days without food and water. The transport alone is so stressful, many horses are injured or killed before they even arrive at their destination.

When the horses finally reach the slaughterhouse, workers attempt to stun them before killing by shooting them with a bolt gun. But the animals may need to be shot multiple times before they’re stunned, and are often still conscious when violently slaughtered.

Horse meat is also unsafe for humans. Because horses in the United States are not bred to be eaten, they are treated with drugs that can be toxic to people, rendering the meat dangerous for human consumption.

The Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) bill, sponsored by Reps. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., aims to amend the existing Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to prevent any and all slaughter of America’s horses.

Sign this petition urging House leaders to strongly support this bill and do everything in their power to see it is passed, protecting America’s precious equines.

The doomsday clock is ticking for African donkeys -China wants them all for ‘traditional’ medicine.

https://networkforanimals.org/newsletter-page/we-are-saving-donkeys-the-chinese-are-trying-to-kill-them-all/

Donkeys are being wiped out in Africa by insatiable demand for their skins. African people use donkeys as transport in tasks such as water carrying. Uneducated rural people are easily persuaded to sell their animals by Chinese buyers who offer hard cash. They don’t realize that in Africa, donkeys are worth more alive than dead because in places of poor roads and poverty, donkeys offer tremendous support to local communities.
If people won’t sell their donkeys, the Chinese arrange for them to be stolen. Then the poor creatures are led into the bush where men, often drunk, wait to slaughter them. First, they are clubbed and when they fall to the ground, they are skinned alive. Yes, that’s the level of barbarism we are dealing with here.
The DOOMSDAY CLOCK is still ticking… …for 22 gentle donkeys who could have ended up skinned alive without our help!

Germany: Veterinary office shows character!

Germany

The veterinary office in Landshut (Bavaria, Germany) does not want to authorize animal transports to far away countries, because the animals are threatened with torment in some regions. A breed society wants to sue against the decision!!!

viehtransport. kuh im Truckjpg

Time and again, animals are transported across Europe in vans over thousands of miles. Often in unworthy conditions. In addition – especially in some Asian countries – brutal battles are waiting for them. The journal “Official Veterinary Service and Food Control” says in one article that “it is very common practices that cause the animals to experience significant and prolonged pain or suffering before they die (bondage, a grip in the eyes, etc.)”.

Kuh mit angebundenen Augen im Blutn

The veterinary office Landshut (Bavaria) does not want to continue that. District Administrator Peter Dreier  wants to put a stop to these livestock transports.

“For me it is animal cruelty, when cattle from our region are transported several thousand kilometers, to be then slaughtered in countries where there is no animal welfare.Peter Dreier, district administrator (Landshut, Bavaria).

The problem is not new: cattle and cows kept in trucks are transported for days, sometimes with stifling heat, without enough water. From Germany, with long-distance destinations Azerbaijan, Kuwait, Egypt, Libya, Turkey and Uzbekistan. “I can no longer personally support this,” says District Administrator Peter Dreier.

tiertransporte-kuh-101

What he specifically addresses is the transport of a pregnant cow about 5,000 kilometers  to Uzbekistan. The veterinary office of Landshut had previously prohibited this export.

kälbchen-ungeboren-schlachthof6

For a pregnant cow to expect the multi-day trip to the Central Asian country, was – so the reason – animal cruelty. The Veterinary Office will not agree to these transports in the future. That means: the vet rejects the “certificate”. This “certificate” is necessary to let animals from the farm ever to the cattle trading center. Only at the direction of the competent ministry are pre-certificates issued in these cases, according to the district office.

56-stunden-tiertransport-titel.Kälberjpg

Thus, Dreier has taken on a responsibility, that actually belongs to the Environment Minister Bayers Thorsten Glauber (FW).

“The approval of animal transports is always an isolated decision of the competent district administrative authority,” writes the ministry on. “Animal welfare is a high good that enjoys constitutional status in Bavaria,” it says in a statement by the ministry.

In the future, the veterinary office on the Landshut district administration wants to deny its consent to such transports in principle, as the media continue to report.

According to it, transports to countries that are thousands of miles away or were known for allegations of animal cruelty, be denied.

tiertransporte-Schiff Transport

This attitude in Landshut could reopen the debate on animal transports from Germany. For so far, such exports are legal with the appropriate permits – but now veterinarians refuse just this.

The breeding association Mühldorf (Bavaria) wants to take legal action against it

Josef Frank from the breeding association Mühldorf, over which the cow should be exported, can not understand this decision.
He threatens with legal action. “If the requirements for export are met, this certificate would have to be issued,” said Frank to Bavarian Broadcasting. In addition, “the animal is a breeding animal and not a slaughter animal” (!!!) , so said Josef Frank.

https://www.br.de/nachrichten/bayern/veterinaeramt-landshut-verweigert-tiertransporte-ferne-laender

My comment: A few years ago there was a similar case: In the district of Oberallgäu (Bavaria), a veterinarian woman had refused a transport to Uzbekistan. The case has been submitted to the European Court of Justice. In 2015, there was a groundbreaking ruling: animal welfare does not end at the external borders of the EU.
For the official veterinarians who authorize a transport of animals to such countries (…), the question arises whether they  must be punished for animal cruelty.

This case is all the more important because it could join other counties Landshut and deny approvals for the transport of cattle and cows in the future, if necessary, as well.

My  best regards, venus

EU: M6NTHS – A short film about the short lives of pigs in the EU.

C pig 9

Dear Mark,

“As we enter the Year of the Pig, could we resolve to get to know this intelligent animal a little better?”Eline Helena Schellekens

Today is Chinese New Year and 2019 is the Year of the Pig – a powerful opportunity for us to give pigs a voice. You can speak up for all pigs suffering in intensive conditions right now: just watch and share this compelling, award-winning short film about the life of a factory-farmed piglet, premiering online today.

Every year, across the UK and EU, around 10 million sows and their piglets are locked up for weeks at a time in farrowing crates. Trapped in these cages, the mothers can barely take care of their young. The cramped conditions prevent them from turning round, restrict their natural behaviours and cause intense suffering.

‘M6NTHS’ is a short film showing life through the eyes of piglets growing up on an industrial farm, having never experienced the joy of being outside. Filmed on farms in the UK, France and Belgium, it gives a unique perspective into how factory farming treats life as a commodity and fails to recognise that animals are smart, sensitive beings.

For two weeks only, Compassion in World Farming is screening ‘M6NTHS’ on our website, in support of the campaign to End the Cage Age. Catch it while you can – it’s available from 5-18 Feb only!

Produced and directed by the award-winning, Bristol-based filmmaker Eline Helena Schellekens, this powerful film has already won the Panda Award for Best Short – the most prestigious wildlife film award.

All over Europe, people are joining together to free more than 300 million farm animals from a life in a cage. You too can take action to support one of the biggest ever animal welfare campaigns. Watch and share ‘M6NTHS’ today!
