It is common knowledge that giving up or cutting down on meat and dairy is the right thing to do for the sake of our planet. Veganism deserves better than eyebrow-raises from the media

Two days into Veganuary and the head-scratching confusion over just exactly what veganism is continues. The perception of veganism as a diet or passing fad has somehow clung on in the health pages of our newspapers, in cookery columns, and in the miniature portions meted out to vegans in pubs across the land.

There is a continual debate in the media about whether ‘the diet’ is healthy. This is beside the point. There is a stream of misinformation designed to trick people into believing that vegetarianism and veganism are simply not possible. This madness must stop, and it’s extraordinary that it has endured this long.

It is, or should be common knowledge by now, that giving up or cutting down on meat and dairy is the right thing to do for the sake of our planet. Bush fires are raging in Australia; the Great Barrier Reef is seriously degraded; Antarctica is melting into the sea. Yes, lacking vitamin B12 is bad for me, but – not to get too Greta Thunberg about it – so is the loss of an area of rainforest the size of Latvia.

More than 100,000 people have already pledged to stick to a plant-based diet for Veganuary, double the number who took the plunge at the same time last year.

The organisation behind the campaign is expanding into Germany, the US and Chile and is airing its first TV commercial after Christmas. “On Sunday, we finished with about 102,000 sign-ups and that is massively more than at the same point last year, 15 December, when we had 44,000 sign-ups – that’s a 127% increase,” Veganuary’s Toni Vernelli said.

It hopes to reach 350,000 by 1 January, up from 250,000 at the start of this year. The campaign is having an impact on restaurants and supermarkets, she said: “The number of companies getting in touch with us who are launching products is truly mind blowing. It does just seem to be everywhere.”

In an appalling act of cruelty, a shooter gunned down dozens of innocent horses, including newborn foals and pregnant mares, near an abandoned strip mine in Floyd County, Ky.

The shooter mercilessly fired bullets into the animals at their most vulnerable moments, including one horse who was eating and died with grass in his mouth. According to Megan Goble, whose family owns the property the horses were massacred on, two pregnant mares miscarried after they were shot.

“It looked like a battlefield for just horses,” said Floyd County Sherrif John Hunt. “We counted 15 that we found dead. All 15 appeared to us to have been shot.”

Later, 6 more dead horses were discovered, bringing the total to 21 animals slain.

It seems as if the killer deliberately separated and terrified the horses shortly before shooting them.

“I was just sick to my stomach by the thought of what those horses had to go through,” said President and CEO of the Kentucky Humane Society Lori Recmon. “It looks like maybe they had been run and then dispersed and shot. They’re herd animals, so to separate them and then shoot them is probably terrifying for them. Then, after I was sad and sickened, I just got angry.”

Prior to the slaughter, roughly 30 horses routinely wandered the remote Eastern Kentucky area. According to locals, people frequently visited the horses to feed them and watch them frolic in the woods. Through one deplorable act, the shooter decimated that population.

As long as the person responsible for the brutal death these horses walks free, he or she poses a continued threat to horses and all other living beings. Whoever murdered these beautiful creatures must be brought to justice before they hunt and kill anyone else.

Sign this petition encouraging the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office to treat this case with the severity it deserves by using every available resource to identify and arrest the individual(s) behind this gruesome crime.

A Christmas Story – The 3 Coal Men From Afar.

The 3 dim men each had in their hands, lots of gifts for the lobbyists of these distant places, of coal, coal, and yet more coal which had been mined under immense pressure from those same lobbyists, and which went completely against what the very wise men eco environmentalists had been saying – fossil fuels contribute massively to global warming; so why mine coal and also cut down trees to farm animals in Amazonia for meat production ?.
